okay, okay but hear me out!
Hiccanna, Moanida and Jackunzel (and maybe someone else if u want) going on a holiday trip together (it could be sea or lake or just swimming pool).
And that three couples playing "chicken fight game"~ When u have to sit on partner shoulder or ridding piggy-back and knock down or separate the other couple!
sksksks just imagine the fun and the chaos!! hahaha
Okay SO I recently watched Palm Springs so I’m just imagining The Gang going to like…a fancy pool resort in like Arizona??? SURE LET’S GO WITH THAT
I’m imagining the only resort the gang could afford to stay at is someplace out in the middle of Arizona or something
It takes a LOT of persuading to get Jack to go, because he haaaaates deserts. Rapunzel basically has to beg. Moana finally managed to bribe him with really good homemade ice slushies. (She’s used to making smoothies for Merida, so how hard can slushies be??? Just throw in some ice!)
Rapunzel offers to help Moana with the slushies, since she gave Jack SO many puppy dog eyes to get him to come. Since they’ve got two people working on them, they’re REALLY good slushies. Jack approves.
Anna also tries to convince Elsa to go, but the perpetually-single Elsa is just like “Um, deserts? Sunburns? Being indefinitely stuck with gross couples doing gross couple stuff?!? Yeah no thank you”
Hiccup tries to wake everyone up at like 6 am to go hiking because "that's when the desert iguanas are out guys!!! C'mon, we have to go!!!" Anna is only persuaded to go after Hiccup makes her coffee--she really wants to make her bf happy, but also mornings can suck her dick. Rapunzel is more than happy to go, because she loves mornings anyways!!! And oh my god, IGUANAS!!! Jack, Merida, and Moana are like "oh FUCK no" and put the pillow back over their head, shoo Hiccup away, and go back to sleep.
On their hike, Hiccup just goes "!!!!!!!" about every reptile he sees. Snake, lizard, horny toad, literally anything with scales will send the boy into an excited frenzy. Rapunzel has similar reactions. Anna could not love both of them more.
At one point, they stumble across a gila monster sunbathing, and Rapunzel is overtaken with the unwavering desire to adopt him. She gets Hiccup on board, and he tries to lure the lizard over with a dusty piece of a snake carcass he found (Anna tried to tell him he really shouldn't touch that, but he was not to be swayed and Anna ended up figuring he could just wash his hands really well when they got back). Anna finds herself in the unusual position of having to be the Voice of Reason, having to be like “hey uh I think this might be illegal and stuff??? Also aren't they poisonous???”
(I know what you're thinking. Bold of you to assume Anna knows the difference between poisonous and venomous.)
Rapunzel literally CANNOT stop gushing to Jack about all the wildlife she saw when she gets back! Jackrabbits! Kangaroo rats! Roadrunners! Peccaries! Centipedes! Jack has only mild to moderate interest in desert ecology, but loves hearing his gf gush so he listens attentively anyways.
Anna and Rapunzel definitely hit up the gift shops in the resort town at some point, and go ABSOLUTELY BATSHIT HOGWILD buying gifts for everyone. They probably max out their credit cards. It's embarrassing, really. But Anna gets Hiccup an absolute shitton of those little wall lizard things and he nearly cries tears of joy when he sees them, so it's all worth it, really.
Moana will not leave the pool like. The entire time. The girl is just obsessed with being in the water, honestly. She gets restless, though, and can't just stand in the pool and vibe--she needs to constantly be moving and swimming around or she'll explode. Merida is more than happy to indulge her by hanging out in the poor with her, but Merida is also constantly challenging her to swim races--a very dumb idea, considering Moana is on the high school swim team and water polo team. Merida, naturally, is an extremely sore loser and is not above excessive pouting, splashing, yelling in angry Scottish, and dunking her girlfriend in revenge. It's at least entertaining for all of their friends to watch.
Jack keeps fucking taking huge buckets of ice from the ice machine and dumping them in the pool. At first he only does this because he keeps griping about the pool not being cold enough (this boy will accept nothing less than sitting in the goddamn arctic ocean), but after her figures out that it pisses off his friends, he takes to pouring said ice directly over their heads. Merida has threatened to murder him several times for this.
Hiccup and Anna's main pool activity is just lazing around on their pool floaties (Anna has a duck one, Hicccup has a dragon one because obviously), sipping cocktails, and just generally vibing. Through some ungodly mixture of pure charisma and a fake ID that Rapunzel helped photoshop, Jack manages to talk his way into getting the whole group access to alcohol. Hiccup is a sangria or Moscow Mule kinda guy while Anna usually gets a Pina Colada or a Sex on the Beach (she's aspec, so she literally will not stop joking about the irony of this). Merida makes a game out of attempting to tip over their floaties and dunk them. Jack, chaos gremlin that he is, puts aside his usual rivalry with Merida to join in. They have a surprisingly strong dunking alliance.
Hiccup and Anna try to form a syndicate of their own, and try to lounge on the same floatie so that they can protect each other while fighting off Jack and Merida together. Unfortunately neither of their floaties were made to hold 2 peoples' weight, so the one they're on ends up tipping over, spilling their cocktails everywhere and dunking them anyways. Jack and Merida consider this a Win By Default.
Moana of course loops everyone into playing water polo at some point. Unfortunately some idiot decided it would be a good idea to let Merida of all people pick the teams, which means of course that they are incredibly rigged. It's Moana, Merida and Anna vs. Jack, Rapunzel, and Hiccup, so basically The Jocks vs. The Nerds (although admittedly Anna is more of a softcore jock--she's nowhere near on Moana or Merida's level, but she's still more naturally athletic than Hiccup, Rapunzel, or Jack). Naturally, Jock Team absolutely whoops Nerd Team's ass. Jack gets salty and demands a rematch. ...Jock Team kicks Nerd Team's ass again.
Throughout all of this, no one thinks to just...rearrange the teams a little. Merida was counting on this. All according to plan.
In the titular chicken game (yes, I remembered, don't worry!), it's Merida on Moana's shoulders (Moana swims and has a lot of upper body strength, what can I say?), Hiccup on Anna's shoulders (I mean...Hiccup's a twig, and Anna HAS to have a fair amount of upper body strength from throwing busts around and punching men off boats and such), and Punz on Jack's shoulders (Jack's pretty lithe and good at keeping his balance while jumping around, so he's their best candidate for not just falling over).
Jack and Rapunzel actually manage to stay in the game longer than anyone expects--their primary strategy is “be good at dodging and staying out of the way while Merida and Hiccup duke it out.” And it works! As limber as Hiccup is, Anna's not nearly as coordinated as Jack and is no match for Moana's sturdy footing. Also, neither Anna nor Hiccup are prepared for how goddamn ruthless and determined to win Merida is. Even though they really, really should have been. I mean...have you met Merida???
When it comes down to Merida-Moana and Rapunzel-Jack, Mer feels a little bad for having to go up against Pure Sweet Punzie. Unfortunately, Rapunzel turns out to be a very hardcore fighter when she puts her mind to it, and Merida is much more evenly matched than she initially thought and realizes she must use her Full Power. It definitely helps her snap out of Going Soft when Jack starts brutally roasting Merida in particular (as per usual). Merida gets a rage-fueled Second Wave, and finally manages to knock Rapunzel over in one foul swoop. Merida and Moana are victorious!
Moana and Merida basically always shower together after a day at the pool. They claim it's because they both know how to handle curly hair in chlorine, and just like to wash each other's hair, but the rest of the gang is pretty sure that's not all that's going on in there.
One day, Anna hits up the resort town alone to buy some kind of secret gifts for her friends with what little money she has left (this girl seriously has no chill when it comes to buying presents).  She goes past this huge, fancy ice cream shop and she's like “!!!! OMG!!! I'm gonna surprise all my buddies with pints of their faves!!!” She just gets super hyped and buys everyone ice cream, getting so caught up in the thrill of it that she forgets that she'll have to like. Drive all this back all the way back to the resort in the rental car. In like. You know. 110+ degree weather.
By the time she gets back to the resort, the ice cream is, of course, goop. Poor Anna, feeling incredibly dumb and like an utter failure of a friend, just kind of bursts into tears. Like damn. This is too much. She was gonna make all her pals so happy, and all for naught! Jack just kinda shrugs and throws all the melted ice cream cartons in the freezer anyways. Once they're (partially) re-frozen, Rapunzel and Moana make slushies with them. They actually come out pretty decent. Anna is substantially cheered up.
Moana prepares some tropical fruit platters for everyone to snack on. Rapunzel tries to “improve” them by adding chocolate sauce and nutella to half of them. Sometimes it works (I mean...bananas and strawberries with chocolate and/or nutella is pretty solid). Other times it just tastes...very weird. Merida gest frustrated and yells at Rapunzel for “ruining all of her girlfriend's good mangoes.”
Jack just thinks this whole thing is so funny, and decides to swap the chocolate sauce with barbecue sauce to cause further chaos. Absolute mayhem ensures. Everyone has a bad time. Except for Anna, who apparently is just a freak who enjoys eating pineapple slices dipped in barbecue sauce.
At some point, Merida gets really drunk on appletinis or some shit and signs the entire group up for a local archery competition. Much to everyone's chagrin, it's no refunds. Naturally, basically everyone sans Merida does terrible. Rapunzel and Hiccup very nearly shoot themselves, while Jack and Anna come very close to  accidentally shooting a group of referees (although Jack might have done this on purpose). Moana gets the farthest, if only because Merida's taught her how to shoot a bow at some point. Merida actually ends up winning--although unfortunately, the prize is $20 and a very cheap plastic trophy (which Merida STILL manages to find a way to break before the trip is even over).
The rest of the group is much more amicable to the concept of going on hikes when said hikes are in the evening. Hiccup and Rapunzel are still excitedly chattering about the local ecosystems the entire time, and Jack and Anna are just kind of looking at their nerdy SOs like “<3 <3 <3″ Moana and Merida, meanwhile, are just kinda vibing in the back, passively listening in and watching the desert sunset.
Rapunzel manages to capture Mer and Mo's interest and gets them to participate more with geology, of all things. Merida just thinks rocks are cool (especially when they can be thrown at people bothering her!), while Moana likes learning about the physical history of places--how water can carve out landscapes, and all that. Hiccup and Jack just kind of exchange a look like “I had no idea that they were into rocks, but...the more you know, I guess???”
Jack makes fun of every reptile they see, mainly to piss Hiccup off. Unfortunately it has the opposite effect, and Hiccup can't help but be entertained--mainly because Jack's insults are so weirdly specific and over-the-top that they loop around to being hilarious. Seriously, he keeps saying shit like “Those are the lamest scales I've ever seen. Absolutely drab, and not nearly shiny enough to prove that nature is beautiful. 0/10.” and “Ohhhh, this fucking rattlesnake think's he's so scary, with his dumb percussion instrument tail!!! I could be more intimidating with a mean look and a large pair of maracas!”
At some point, a bunch of tourists riding donkeys pass them. Anna, Rapunzel, and Merida just absolutely lose their shit fangirling over how cute the donkeys are, thus exposing all three of them as the unabashed Horse Girls they are. Hiccup, Jack, and Moana find this extremely amusing, and definitely aren't above teasing their girlfriends about it. Hiccup asks if next time they take a couples' vacation, the Horse Gang (as Moana insists on nicknaming them) would like to go to a ranch instead.
Anna gets like. Obsessed with palm trees. Like they're just so pretty and exotic and tropical!!! OMG!!! And they definitely don't have them wherever the gang is from in this AU. (Also if griping about Elsa not having "tropical powers" is anything to go by, she DOES canonically like the tropics!) She has to take a picture of like...every palm tree on her phone. And considering the gang is in Arizona, that means Anna is stopping to take a picture like...every 2 minutes. Rapunzel catches onto the fact that Anna likes them, and paints her a picture with some when Punz has the time. Anna definitely cries when she sees it. Hiccup can't do nearly that good, but he does buy her some little plastic figurine ones in a gift shop that she can put in her room. Anna also cries about this. She just cries whenever any of her friends indulge her random fixation on palm trees. Surely she doesn't deserve such niceties!!!
Rapunzel is just. In love with the desert landscape tbh. Like the huge funky cacti!!! The shrubs!!! The desert wildflowers!!! The mesas!!! All of it!!! So of course she needs to pull out her easel and paint it. Jack walks by one day and sees her working on it and, partly just to troll her, he's like “put some snow in it!” As he walks away, Rapunzel just stops like “wait...that'd actually be such a great idea for a surrealist-type fantasy piece!!!” After she finishes the main landscape, she adds an overcoat of little puffs of snow on top of everything, and has some clumps falling off of the cacti. When she shows Jack, he just about cries tears of joy, but frantically tries to hide it. She gives the painting to him as a present at the end of the trip. He hangs that shit front-in-center in his room and cherishes it forever and ever.
At some point, Jack gets the ingenious idea that he's going to prank Merida by catching a tarantula and leaving it in her room. It's one of the harmless ones--Jack fact-checks this by offhandedly asking Hiccup and framing it as a casual interest in local etymology. Still, Merida screams far louder than is at all dignified, and also probably loud enough to wake a neighboring country. Rapunzel later has to physically hold Merida back to keep her from absolutely beating Jack into a pulp. Rapunzel also manages to get the World's Largest Sheet of Cardboard and the World's Largest Cup and somehow manages to get the damn thing back outside.

Catching the Highlights
Tumblr media
It wasn’t like she was nervous, not really. Or jealous, even. Honestly, the entire story was more than a little hysterical and very nearly distracted Belle from the obviously frustrated way Will kept moving his hands at the end of the second period. Still, there was something about sitting in the stands that felt different and maybe hearing about how her maybe-boyfriend made out with Anna Vankald one time was just the push she needed. To make things a bit more real.
———
Word Count: Nearly 4.5K AN: This is a thing I do now, apparently. Write Blue Line! Will and Belle. And poorly photoshop eights into sixes on jerseys. Although I draw the line at making the girl that same photo wear a skirt. Anyway, this continues to be real fun, I hope the five people enjoying it continue to enjoy it and I think I’ve got at least one more idea for these dweebs. So, that’ll probably happen sooner rather than later. Possibly with more badly executed photoshops.
———
It had something to do with his eyes.
With the way they narrowed ever so slightly, able to thin without causing any sort of furrow between his brow or lines of frustration on his forehead. They’d pinch. His eyes, that was. Make it so it was difficult for Belle to see the brown there or the bits of gold that she was at least ninety-six percent positive she wasn’t imagining and only slightly less confident had something to do with her.
She’d never really been one for details, like that.
Strange as it might have been.
Details were the lifeblood of research. Tiny bits of information that could sway a doctoral defense or prove an argument, but Belle had always been far more interested in the sweeping potential of a very good story, and research had that too, she supposed. To some degree, at least. Although, that was getting existential. Her work was good. She was good. Fine, even. Definitely fine. Nothing to see here. Nothing to worry about. No reason to compare the strange and not entirely unfamiliar sensation of fluttering in the pit of her stomach whenever Will glanced her way to the decidedly still nature of all her internal organs while she spent eight to ten hours uptown five days a week.
Sitting at her desk, she regularly tried to fit into the mold, everything everyone expected her to be with the title she had, and that required her to think less about the bigger picture. That sounded negative. It wasn’t. Probably. Hopefully. Just required further research. More details and specific examples.
All of them regarding the nature of Will’s eyes.
Even so, she—
Part of her missed it. The sweep. The really good stories. Ones that were less clinical and more fantastical. And the deep breath that always came just seconds before being overwhelmed. By the current and the wave and those were rather similar, as far as analogies went, but all the best stories always left her a little overwhelmed, and Belle’s cheeks were starting to ache as something bubbled out of her. Laughter, in its purest form. Bouncing and bounding and echoing off otherwise abandoned walls, the pair of them tucked into a corner of the Garden concourse because they hadn’t actually decided this was a secret, but Anna Vankald was apparently living her life under some sort of blood oath, all sworn secrecy, and poorly executed winks in the second period.
Like this was hidden. A tiny detail tucked away. Never debated. Never highlighted in the opening paragraphs of a twenty-six-page dissertation. With Chicago-style formatting.
No one ever knew how to property do Chicago-style formatting.
Belle might have hated Chicago-style formatting.
She’d never been to Chicago.
Had never been—
Will’s eyes were barely slits on his face.
Twisted lips loomed above her, not quite frustration, but inching closer the longer she kept laughing, and she refused to linger on what that meant. The laughing. The happiness. Joy, maybe. She looked up, instead. Let her head bump the wall her shoulders already had, appreciating the soft scrape of what might have been concrete against her hair, like that would ground her or slow her overactive imagination, and his hair was still wet.
“She wasn’t supposed to tell you that.” Belle bit the side of her tongue. Didn’t help, really. With her laughter problem. “Keeping state secrets?” “It happened once.” “Yes, she mentioned that, too.” He might have growled. Some strange part of her wanted him to, relished whatever the technical term was for the sound that eked out between his bared teeth, rolling his whole head in the process. Their noses nearly collided.
Belle pushed up on her toes.
To kiss the tip of Will’s nose.
“That’s distracting,” he grumbled, but his hand had inched under the hem of her shirt, and that meant he’d managed to get the hem of her shirt out of the skirt she was wearing.
“Should I have worn your jersey or something?”
His eyes snapped. Open. Brown and gold, and that wasn’t a particularly swoon-like combination in any of the stories Belle had memorized while she was growing up. Heroes with royal titles and broadswords quite literally made to challenge dragons and hordes of villains always came with blonde hair and a slight curl, flashing blue eyes that twinkled in sunlight and starlight, and Belle’s hand didn’t shake. When she brushed the few drops of water clinging to Will’s temple away.
Her calves were starting to ache, too. Made sense. She was still pushed up on her toes.
And the Rangers had lost. Not—well, not badly. By two goals, and one of those was an empty-net goal, which was a term Belle figured out all on her own. Well before Anna mumbled explanations under her breath, glaring daggers any time the Islanders fan two rows in front of them dared to open his mouth.
Honestly, that was part of the problem. He kept yelling, and Anna looked dangerously close to staging some sort of public execution in section 204 and Belle had asked. For details. Wanted a good story, or possibly a distraction because she’d noticed the way Will’s hands moved at the end of the second period, staging a rather enthusiastic conversation with a man she’d never met, but his jersey said LOCKSLEY, and she didn’t think the jersey would lie to her.
She was going to blame the Islanders fan.
“If you did that,” Will mumbled, in response to a question she’d legitimately almost forgotten about, “I’m not sure I would have been able to get out on the ice.” “Oh, compliment or—” “Definite compliment. Was that not obvious?” “Well, you’re making out with so many other girls.”
Her laugh clung to the letters, pulling her lips behind her teeth to keep from smiling like a total idiot. Something was happening. With the flutters and the overall ability of her nasal passages to get oxygen back to her lungs, and it must have been a trick of the light. The way Will’s eyes flashed, gaze flicking up beneath eyelashes and just above the half curve of his mouth, and Belle’s knees felt a little unsteady beneath her. Fighting against the force of a wholly imaginary, even more staggering wave.
“One time,” he said, straining on every letter, “it happened one time, and—seriously, why was she talking about this with you?” “Asked for a fun and interesting story about her.” Will’s eyes bugged, another shift in his voice that was much more like a crack as he nearly shouted, “And that’s what she came up with?”
“Said anything she had to tell me about her childhood was boring. Mostly because a lot of it would focus on KJ, because—”
“That’s Cap.” Belle clicked her tongue. “Wow, thank you for that. What would I do without you?” “If you wore my jersey, I think my head would explode.” “Not the compliment you think it is, either. That’d be a lot of blood. Who would even clean that up? Couldn’t make someone here do it; that’d be mean. Cruel and unusual, probably.” “I like your skirt.” “Better,” Belle laughed, in spite of her best efforts. Which were really lackluster, quite frankly. “Anyway, the childhood was apparently super boring, and there were shenanigans of rookie season to discuss.”
“She grew up in a mansion!” “Yeah, we got to that part eventually, although technically, I think it was just a brownstone.” “Rich kid description.” “You can tell her that if you want, I’m sure,” Belle reasoned, but his lips were back to twisted, and she was already on her toes. Made sense to use that to her advantage. Pressing kisses against the edges of his mouth, alternating back and forth until it felt a little like a rhythm she could time the rest of her vaguely unsteady breathing to, and she certainly did try. Didn’t work, but something about effort and attempts and those were—
Details, really.
“I like her,” Belle added lightly, mouth moving across a stubble-covered cheek. Part of her felt ridiculous. Always did with things like this. She wasn’t the story. Will wasn’t the hero. He and his teammate had gotten into a fight at the end of the second period, for God’s sake. And this wasn’t—well, it wasn’t a fairy tale. No matter how much sweeping there might have been. With its butterfly wings and salt-filled waves, all of which existed solely in Belle’s subconscious.
But there was this other part.
Part of her that didn’t always linger behind her desk. Flitted through imaginary scenarios and stories stored in the back corner of her brain, the same one that could still smell salt air with startling clarity, and remembered the precise taste of freshly-made taffy from that one restaurant on the beach. Details. She remembered those details. Held them fast, afraid they’d disappear otherwise, and made sure they played prominent roles in every daydream.
For fear of what would happen if she didn’t.
How they’d fade. Grow grey and thin, and it was a contradiction. Right in the middle of her. And that scared her just a little bit, because whatever was happening now, right at that moment, with a hand flat on the curve of her hip and her heart doing its abject best to beat its way out of her chest, she felt the same exact way. Sweeping and detailed and not the least bit jealous.
There was no need to be, really. Not when she was fairly certain she could drown in the golden flecks of Will’s eyes. Constantly staring at her as they were apt to do.
“Do you want to hear the gist of the story?”
Will’s lips pursed. Stayed that way even as Belle’s lips continued their path across his face, spending at least two seconds at the side of his left eye and the still slightly damp area surrounding his right temple. She started picking up speed. Quick kisses that she could only hope felt as strongly as the prickle of her lips suggested. But then Will’s fingers tightened. Not much. Just enough to be obvious, and Belle grinned against his cheek.
“I lived it,” Will argued, but there wasn’t much fight in it. He’d done that already, anyway. They’d get to that part, eventually.
“As the story goes, though, there was some less than savory libations involved, and—” “I’m still not convinced that vodka was legal in the continental United States.” “Suggests it’d be fair game in Hawaii and Alaska, though. Possibly Puerto Rico. I’m not sure what the rules on that are. Maybe the US Virgin Islands. What about Guam? You think your alcohol would be fair game in Guam?” “I’d have to check the label.” “You still have it?” Belle balked, almost fully and entirely prepared for the flash of amusement and the precise angle of eyebrow jump. Almost being the key word, there. Another burst of laughter tumbled out of her, lips on her cheeks that time, all blazing and prickling, and that one wasn’t inherently positive, but she was slightly worried her hair was going to get caught in the concrete of the wall and she could not possibly be expected to think when Will’s hand kept doing whatever it was it was doing.
“No, no, we did a very good job of drinking that entire thing, but I’d know that bottle anywhere.” “Where were you buying illegal alcohol? Also, how did you not die drinking hundred-proof vodka?” “Pure force of will.”
“And bad hockey games.” “Those too,” Will admitted grudgingly. An edge crept into his voice. Likely born in the second period of this game. She kissed the bridge of his nose. The tip. Between his eyebrows. Waiting for some of the tension to leave his shoulder blades, and that was all she got. Some. It was enough, for now.
“You want to talk about that?” “Losing a playoff game my rookie season? That happened a bunch of times, babe, this was just—” “Don’t be an idiot,” Belle interrupted.
He grinned. Tension kept pulling taut between his shoulders and the slope of his cheekbones, the second of which was really starting to offend Belle on an almost fundamental level, but his smile looked legitimate, and that was enough.
“Should I go defend your honor in the locker room, darling?” The grin widened. “Trying to get a rise out of me, but gender is a social construct, so I don’t think it affects nicknames, and I’m a real big fan of that one, actually.” “No rise,” Belle promised, fingers hovering above his shoulders, and they both flinched when he winced. “Going to be honest, the hitting sort of freaked me out.” “Locksley wasn’t going to hit me.” “Well, yeah, then I’d have to punch him in the locker room.” “Keep your thumb inside your fist,” Will suggested, “that way you won’t break it.” “Right, right, naturally,” Belle mumbled, and she didn’t know how they managed it. Stayed upright while his hand shifted further up the back of her shirt and her teeth grazed the curve of his jaw. She was on something of a mission, now. To cover every inch of his face. With her lips. “Anyway, as Anna told this wholly fascinating story, there was a lot of vodka involved, a very bad loss, some card game—” “—Kings.” “That’s a drinking game.” “Well, now you’re getting into unnecessary specifics.” Her body shook. Against Will’s. Who almost immediately groaned. Presumably at the location and exact angle of her hips. “Ok, so there were cards involved in your drinking game. Pizza was eaten, alcohol was downed in alarmingly large gulps.” “Editorializing a bit, mon bonheur.”
“What’s that one?” “Happiness.” “Oh, that one’s nice.” Will huffed. “They’re all super nice; I have a very large crush on you; I don’t want to talk about making out with Anna Vanklad anymore.”
He said it quickly, rushing over the words. Some might even say sweepingly. Where Belle was the some. In that instance, specifically. Someone, more like. She didn’t care. Was not spending even a second on proper sentence structure or appropriate internal grammar, was far too preoccupied with the circumference of Will’s eyes. And that one muscle in his jaw. Jumping with startling regularity, really. Totally different from her heart and her pulse and it was difficult to catch her breath.
Felt a bit like she’d played a hockey game.
A walking contradiction.
Where she also wasn’t walking anywhere. At all. Had absolutely no intention of walking away. From this.
“Was it not a good make-out?” “I honestly don’t remember a lot of it,” Will sighed, another roll of his neck. Something cracked. “That’s not game-related,” he added, and she could only imagine it had to do with the look on her face, “anyway, it was just...there was that vodka involved, and Vankald spent a ton of time at our apartment. She wasn’t Cap’s sister-in-law yet, but they’d grown up together, was my friend, and he’d fallen asleep, so…” “Figured you just make out?” “Not a lot of thought involved in it. She was a fixture, y’know? Shit, that sounds shitty. Does that sound super shitty?
“Drifting toward shitty, yeah.”
“Anna came to visit a lot because no matter what she may claim, she worries about Cap as much as anyone. Even El and Leader, and that’s—” “Wait, you have an Alien Leader you all report to?” “You’re ruining this story.” Her laugh got caught. Directly between them, all mouths and that goddamn hand, Belle’s neck tilting back on what might have been instinct and need, and she’d gasped more in the last four hours than she had in her entire life. “Tell me more about your Alien Leader, please.” “He only acts like an alien.” “Huh, that cleared up absolutely nothing.” “You should keep kissing me.” “Compare and contrast, huh?” Will groaned. Again. Part two. Let his mouth drag down the side of her throat, and Belle couldn’t stop laughing. Happiness poured out of her, new and a little strange in its quantity. As if she was made of the stuff, even worried as she was through all three periods. She’d kept wringing her fingers together. At one point, Anna had to hold her hand.
“Ruining,” another kiss, “this,” teeth on her collar bone, “baby girl.”
Suggesting that she lit up in a way that reminded her of a Christmas tree was—
Farcical, maybe.
Nothing inhuman happened. There were no bells. No whistles. No flashing neon lights suggesting this was the moment and a conversation regarding the man with his hand currently inching towards her right boob drunkenly making out with someone who wasn’t Belle should not have been so—
Fun.
God, it was fun. She was having fun. With him and because of him. Hockey nonsense aside.
Because, since coming to New York with her invisible tail tucked between her legs and the near-desperate desire to get away from that seaside town with its ghosts and its demands and its plan for a future that simply did not fit her anymore, Belle had tried. Really. To shed that persona. To be someone new. Hard as she tried, though, there were ties. Those lingering memories. Ones that dug in their heels, while she gripped others with both hands. She was, and she wasn’t. Small town and big town, a librarian who couldn’t care less about details while focusing on  specifics with everything in her.
And none of it ever really made much sense.
Hurt her head to think about, everything she tried to contain and the worry that ate away at her sometimes. That she’d messed up, ruined all of it and—
She didn’t kiss Will’s mouth.
Peppered his face, instead. With her lips and the feelings behind them, mapping the space until she was certain she knew it as well as her own, and she wanted to. Wanted to learn everything about this guy who felt as jagged as she did, made up of right and wrong and mistakes and possibility and she knew it was only a matter of time before he got impatient.
She liked that about him.
That he didn’t always wait for her to catch up. Just knew that she would.
Plus, his tongue in her mouth was really something Belle was starting to appreciate. In an obsessive sort of way.
She might have groaned that time.
Fingers scrambled against the front of his shirt — team-branded, again, and that shouldn’t have been charming, but it was and likely would continue to be, and there were goosebumps on her skin. They were really very good at kissing. Each other, specifically.
“I like you, too,” Belle said, and it was a strange thing not to be embarrassed by the breathless nature of her voice.
Will’s chest was practically heaving, though. So that put them on even ground. Common ground, at least.
“You’re not mad?” “Give me some credit, sweetheart.” He chuckled, warm air against the top of her shoulder. “Was a very long time ago, for whatever that might be worth.” “Twelve galleons.” “I don’t know the conversion rate of that.” “No one does, so I think we’re all in the same boat.” “You don’t think Jo knows the conversion rate of her own fictional monetary system?” Belle shook her head. “I absolutely do not, because she was a shit world-builder and also a fairly terrible person now, so—” She shrugged. Will beamed. Some joke about a Christmas tree.
“So,” he echoed, “the thought of making out with Little Vankald has never once again crossed my mind.”
Someone scoffed. With entirely false indignation.
Using Will’s shoulder as leverage — the non-bruised one, naturally — Belle got enough height beneath her toes to see Anna cross her arms. And scowl at the pair of them. Badly. The scowl lasted all of five seconds before it evolved into its own rather uproarious laughter, another echo that filled the empty space of a concourse Belle could not imagine they were supposed to be standing on. Only a matter of time until someone else found them.
She wasn’t sure that was a bad thing, actually.
“That’s super rude, Scarlet,” Anna hissed, muffled footsteps that only lost their volume because of the overall status of Belle’s heart. Still trying to fly out of her. “But I want it noted, for the record and all that, that I don’t want to make out with you ever again, either.”
“Do you remember it being way wetter than it should have been?” “You problem, absolutely.” “I haven’t had that issue,” Belle argued, mostly to guarantee the quirk of Will’s lips. Worked like a charm. Or something less lame sounding. In her head. Most of this commentary was in her head.
“Lucky you,” Anna drawled.
“C’mon,” Will whined, “no one told you to start with this story.” “Start with, huh?” His eyes. Were becoming a serious problem and a growing majority in the basis for most of Belle’s heart-related issues, but she forced herself to meet his gaze and tilt her chin up and she didn’t think she imagined the way his tongue pushed against the inside of his cheek. In an appraising sort of way.
“I really would have told you. Eventually” “I know.” “I’m serious.” “I know,” Belle repeated, “and I’m really not threatened by someone who you still regularly refer to as Little Vankald.” Anna flipped him off. Or them, maybe. As a collective unit. Belle wanted them to be a collective unit. “I could order a jersey online, right?” “Nah, I know people, don’t waste your money.” “Could probably get Kris to help,” Anna added, “as the physical form of my apology.” Belle waved her off. “It was a good story. Highs, lows, drama, does your—do we call him your brother-in-law? He’s not the Alien Leader, right?” “You mean Liam?” Will’s laugh was more like a barely-contained snort of humor and shoulders that were tight for a reason that did not involve pessimistic emotions. Belle’s lips twitched. “Just knew that off the top of your head, did you?” she asked.
“If you knew Liam, you’d understand. Was Scarlet suggesting we’re all aliens?” “Nah, just him.” “I did no such thing,” Will objected, another glance in Anna’s direction, “Cap looking for us?” She nodded. “Locksley too. Should I be worried Mom and Dad are getting a divorce?” “You’re the most dramatic person alive.” “Lots of hand moving between the two of you, your girlfriend was worried.”
It was Belle’s turn to tense. With what, she wasn’t entirely sure. Some sort of emotion, she assumed. Adrenaline, maybe. Hope, possibly. And it wasn’t like she was waiting for labels, but she’d come to pretty good terms with her ability to counter herself in the midst of her own silent monologue, and Will was staring again. Straight through her, it seemed.
Or maybe directly into her.
That was sentimental, though.
“Does Killian know that you two made out once?” Anna hissed. “If you tell KJ about this, I will actually have to strangle you, no matter how much I like you and how much Scarlet wants to date you.” “Aren’t we dating already?” Anna opened her mouth, what Belle knew would be more sarcasm and the teasing nature of her and Will’s relationship, but she had more pressing issues, and he answered, anyway. “Yeah, we totally are, plus I like you way more than I hate Ariel’s inevitable victory lap, so I mean, that’s—” Cutting him off was rude. Not nice. Inevitable.
Based solely on the size of his eyes and their gold-like nature.
“I, uh—” Belle started, “I know we’re not supposed to accept the set-up, and Ariel’s going to be so annoying, but maybe we could…” She shrugged. Tried to stay focused. And upright. Continued standing seemed important in a moment like this. “We’re both kinda messed up, don’t you think?” “Little,” Will murmured.
“Yeah, yeah, I know, and I know that we’re...I mean, this is good, and I’m mostly good with it, but also, I was super nervous during the game, and what were you guys fighting about?” “Fighting is a strong word. More like discussing how Locksley should learn to keep his stick on the ice so he can get that tip from my slap.” “Weird turn of phrase.” “Slap shot.” “No time for full terminology, huh?” “How goes the understanding icing battle?” She was going to sprain her cheeks. Maybe Ariel could help with that. After gloating. Ariel was absolutely going to gloat. “Getting there,” Belle promised, and it was not about hockey, “don’t you think?” “Mmhm.” “So, uh—I don’t know what you do after games, but…” “Little Vankald is totally here to drag us uptown because Cap regularly challenges her in the dramatics, and I bet he’s hungry.” “You eat after games?” “Ariel’s husband owns that restaurant.” “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, that’s how I met her actually. Good onion rings. Weird we didn’t ever see each other there at the same time, though.” Will hummed. Stuck out his lower lip. Challenged her without saying anything, and Anna was still standing there, and security had to be aware of them, but Belle was in the middle of something, and it was good and great and made absolutely no sense because she was not a pro sports girlfriend, but the labels really weren’t important, and it was all—
She gasped. For, like, the four-thousandth time that night.
Saved the best for last, though.
Will’s mouth found hers in a crashing sort of way that altered the cosmos, or at least Belle’s perception of the world around her. Particularly when her hands were suddenly more like barnacles, gripping his shirt as if she was afraid he’d disappear otherwise. Knuckles cracked and breath caught, everything spinning and staying frustratingly still, and one of her heels popped out of her shoe. Pressing back up on her toes didn’t do her calves any favors, but she wasn’t bruised and they were both a disaster, and the tongue thing really was pretty fantastic.
Tracing the inside of her mouth and the seam of her lips, Will’s rumble of pleasure echoed between her ribs, enough to spur Belle’s arm up as she slung it around his neck. Her fingers found skin and short hair, nails scratching so she could hear that sound again.
She closed her eyes.
Let the details seep in, and settle into her soul.
Until Anna coughed, and there was a security guard standing next to her, and Will’s head dropped to Belle’s collar bone again. He kissed there, too. Before spinning on his sandals, all confidence, and bravado, a reasonable excuse that someone, somewhere, would probably believe. Not this security guard, but that probably wasn’t important, and Belle had helped Will make an Instagram account.
So, something about a cat and a bag and—
His fingers laced through hers.
“Wanna challenge Locksley to a fight for my honor?” She scrunched her nose. Pretended to grimace when his lips pressed against her cheek. Anna gagged. “Yeah,” Belle said, “that’s exactly what I want to do.”

“You tag and track us?” Jamie says.
“Nothing so terrible,” Anna says, rolling her eyes. “It’s for your protection as much as ours. If you leave, your tracking implant is replaced with one that’s always on, in a part of your body you aren’t aware of. Just in case.”
Jamie eyes her. “This sounds dark. I don’t know if I want to—” She pauses. “Don’t I already know too much?”
“Eh.” Anna shrugs. “What you know right now can’t hurt us. Despite everyone’s attempts to the contrary.” She eyes Jesse and Alex in disdain. “Nice job keeping our secrets, guys.”
Jesse laughs and Alex throws an onion ring at Anna, grinning. Anna rolls her eyes and it occurs to Jamie for the first time that all of this is fond. They get along. They’re a family like her team used to be.
She wants to be part of that. She misses that comradely. She hadn’t realised how big the gaping void her team had left in her heart was until she was sitting here with them.
She just doesn’t know if she wants the rest of the bullshit that comes with it: the secrecy, the lies, the classified information, possibly the shooting people if the sound of her role is anything to go on, let alone the implants. None of it sounds appealing.
But this does.
She listens as Jesse and Alex chatter, as Anna watches them with a smile as she eats her way through her chicken nuggets.
“How’s Nadia?” Anna asks.
Alex grins. “She’s good. I’m gonna put in for some time off in a few weeks, take her on vacation. I’ve been eyeing up this place in Thailand: Banana Beach. It looks amazing.” He gestures grandly with his hands across the table and now he’s talking to Jamie and Jesse too. “The water is crystal clear and blue as hell—”
“Are you sure it isn’t photoshopped?” Jesse crunches on a piece of cucumber.
“Why would they photoshop it?” Alex says and shakes his head. “No, no, it’s definitely not. Anyway, I’ve been shopping Airbnb’s and there’s no way all of those are going to be photoshopped to make the water look the exact same way, so no. I was thinking we’d get a nice condo all to ourselves, right on the beach. Sparkling waves, only each other’s company, no aliens or demons or tentacle monsters gouging out eyeballs. Just me, her, and the open water.” He’s still gesturing across the table with his hands and Anna’s watching him with affection sparkling in her blue eyes just like Alex describes the water.
“How much do you earn?” is Jamie’s input. She pauses. “Sorry, that was rude. I’m just— that sounds expensive.” She laughs a little.
“I make more than anyone else except Anna,” he says. “But we all make a fair bit.”
“I make about eight hundred a year,” Jesse says with a shrug.
“Dollars?” Jamie says.
“Thousand,” Anna replies.
Jamie snaps her attention onto her. “What? What? How? How do you— What?!” She looks back at Jesse, trying to compute the fact this actual child makes more than she could ever dream of earning in her entire lifetime— unless, of course, she takes the job.
“You’d be making less than that, of course,” Anna says. “Your skillset is different and you haven’t been with us as long as Alex.”
“Wait, he makes more than—” Jamie stares at him. “How much—” He waves her off and grins across the table. She swallows hard.
“Starting salary for you,” Anna says, “would be about two-forty a year.”
Jamie might just die right here and now. “That’s—”
“Four thousand eight hundred a week,” Anna says. “Give or take.”

Online dating – a virtual world of deception.
“On the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog’’ – Peter Steiner (1993).
Tumblr media
Online dating is a growing phenomenon, with 1 in 10 internet users indicating they have visited a website that would allow them to meet somebody online (Bridges, 2012). The reasons for online dating vary, ranging from looking for love, to wanting a one-night stand. However, as Steiner (1993) suggests, the identity of somebody on the internet is not guaranteed. This is supported by many theorist, who believe that some online daters use unrealistic and deceptive means in presenting themselves (Hitsch, Hortacsu & Ariely, 2009). Such deceptions thus allow for individuals of online dating to become victims to catfishing, cyber-bullying, sexual harassment, kidnapping and even rape.
Everybody wants to make themselves look better to everyone else, which is why some people claim that uses of social media may have two identities – an in person identity and a second online identity. The same is also evident in online dating. Users of online dating websites will want to create the best identity of themselves to improve the potential of finding a partner for whatever means. To create such an identity, users will only upload the best photos of themselves and include positive information in their biography. Many of you reading this explanation will believe that this is something that you do and that there is nothing wrong with it. It should be noted that I am not saying this is wrong, but it is indeed a form of deception.
To build on this, a greater form of deception would be catfishing. Catfishing is a term that originates from fisherman, and describes individuals who create fake accounts, to enter fake relationships for personal gains. Somebody who is acting as a catfish will tend to use false images, false information in their biography and will even lie about any personal information in conversations. Unlike the ‘real’ users on online dating who will use minor deception to create the best self-image to increase the likely-hood of finding a partner: a catfish will be entirely deceiving another online dating user for reasons other than finding a partner, reasons such as to gain money.
Since the introduction of online dating, there have been numerous cases of catfishing. In 2017, BBC News published an online article addressing the proposal for catfishing to be made illegal, a movement headed by Anna Rowe, who was a victim to catfishing on the online dating app of Tinder (Wilson, 2017). The Article explains how the number of catfishing cases and fraudulent actions on online dating sites reached a “record high” in 2016, a number which one could imagine has grown significantly since then.
Tumblr media
Further still, catfishing is just the beginning of online dating deception, as it acts as a platform for greater threats. As expressed earlier, catfishing enables individuals to meet up and carry out illegal acts, such as sexual harassment or kidnapping without leaving any trace. Others may spiral into the trap of sending money, or indecent images which may be used as blackmail. Overall, these can have a psychological and physiological effect on these victims that could potentially affect the rest of their lives.
Despite the growing number of cases and the seriousness of a majority of these cases, catfishing and online deception is still a major issue. Whether there have been attempts to tackle this problem or not, users of online dating are continuously having to go about trying to find the right partner in an unsure manner. I agree with Anna Rowe in that catfishing should become an illegal act by law, however, there is a grey area as to what counts as catfishing. Does Kim Kardashian catfish by deceiving her Instagram followers through the use of Photoshop on her posts? Also, how can a catfish be caught if they use false information? This debate is one that is very sensitive and one that will be ongoing into the foreseeable future. Until an efficient solution is found, I would recommend following the top tips given by the dating site, eHarmony in the link below.

https://bestladyhacks.com/1-how-women-dress-for-other-women/
“If you can’t be higher than your opposition,” Vogue editor Anna Wintour as soon as said, “simply get dressed higher.”
Indeed, new studies indicate that girls don’t simply get dressed to be fashionable or to outdo each other in relation to attractive guys. They additionally get dressed for different girls.
But Wintour’s quote misses a number of the nuances that cross into the clothing girls pick out with girlfriends, co-people, and associates in mind. It’s now no longer pretty much dressing higher. In fact, my colleagues and I observed that girls may be influenced via way of means of any other factor: averting the slings and arrows of different girls.
The psychology of girls’ wardrobes
My social psychology lab explores how girls navigate their social relationships with different girls. With my co-authors, Oklahoma State graduate pupil Ashley M. Rankin and Arizona State University graduate pupil Stefanie Northover, I currently studied what is going into girls’ style picks.
Of course, each male and females do not forget numerous worries whilst choosing their clothing: cost, fit, occasion.
Existing mental studies on girls’ apparel picks have a tendency to the middle on how girls get dressed for guys – the makeup, footwear, and colorations they choose to electrify the alternative intercourse.
But we posed an exceptional question: How would possibly girls get dressed for different girls?
For over a century, psychologists had been inquisitive about opposition among guys. Only during the last few years have researchers commenced to noticeably investigate how girls actively compete with each other.
The opposition isn’t always nice. Like guys who compete with each other, girls may be competitive closer to the different girls they’re competing with. But it’s hardly ever the bodily kind. Instead, social scientists like Joyce Benenson, Kaj Bjorkqvist, and Nicole Hess have proven that girls are greater susceptible to relying upon social exclusion and reputation-destructive gossip.
So we wondered: Do girls ever get dressed defensively – to mitigate the hazard that different girls would possibly cross after them?
We realize that girls who’re bodily appealing and put on revealing apparel are much more likely to be objectives of identical-intercourse aggression. For example, psychologists Tracy Vaillancourt and Aanchal Sharma observed that girls behaved greater aggressively closer to an appealing female whilst she became wearing a brief skirt and low-reduce blouse than whilst that precise identical female wore khakis and a crewneck.
We reasoned that girls could be privy to this dynamic – and a few could attempt to keep away from it. So we examined this principle in a sequence of experiments.
Dressing defensively
First, we studied whether or not human beings could anticipate girls to be competitive closer to appealing, scantily clad girls.
We requested 142 human beings to study a situation approximately girls, Carol and Sara, who met for espresso after connecting on a friend-finder app that became like Tinder, however for platonic relationships. We requested the individuals how they concept Carol could deal with Sara for the duration of an in any other case uneventful espresso date. Although the situations had been identical, a few human beings noticed a picture graph of Sara that depicted her as an appealing female sporting khaki and a crewneck; others noticed a picture graph of her sporting a low-reduce blouse and brief-skirt, and a 3rd organization noticed her withinside the greater revealing outfit, however, the picture graph have been photoshopped to make her appearance much less bodily appealing.
We observed that once Sara became appealing and revealingly dressed, human beings anticipated Carol could be meaner to Sara.
We then desired to peer whether or not girls could additionally act on the attention of this dynamic, so we ran a sequence of experiments with college-elderly and grownup girls from the U.S.
For a hard and fast of studies, we advised girl individuals to assume that they had been going to satisfy new human beings in an expert setting, like a networking occasion, or at a social gathering, inclusive of a birthday party. They had been additionally informed to assume the occasion as both single-intercourse or mixed-intercourse.
In the first, we requested girls to attract their perfect clothing for the one’s occasions, and we later had undergraduate studies assistants degree how a lot of pores and skin became revealed. In the second, we requested girls to pick out clothing from a menu of options – comparable to looking for garments online. Each of the viable clothing has been rated for modesty via way of means of a separate set of individuals.
In each study, girls selected greater revealing clothing for social occasions than expert ones. This wasn’t surprising. But interestingly, girls selected much less revealing clothing to satisfy up with an all-girl organization – no matter whether or not it became an expert or social setting.
But wouldn’t the greater revealing apparel in mixed-organization settings sincerely replicate their choice to draw guys?
Not exactly. Not all girls dressed identically to different girls. The girls who rated themselves as greater bodily appealing had been those who selected greater modest clothing whilst assembly up with a set of girls. This helps the concept that they had been dressing defensively – to keep away from bringing interest to themselves and being centered via way of means of the opposite girls.
Because identical-intercourse aggression is much more likely to return back from strangers than friends, in our very last test we requested 293 younger girls, elderly 18 to 40, what they could put on to satisfy up with a potential girlfriend. Again, we observed that greater bodily appealing girls indicated that they could get dressed with greater discretion.
Together, those findings display that girls don’t usually get dressed to electrify. Nor do they get dressed to aggress. Instead, there’s a greater diffused social dance taking place – one which entails humility, hesitance, and heightened awareness.

Whole Project Evaluation
The starting point of this project was to create a brainstorm of all the possible ideas which tie in with the title ‘Flora and Fauna’. The initial brainstorm which I created at the very start of this project in September is shown below.
Tumblr media
The creation of this brainstorm provided me with a variety of starting points which I referred to at the start of the project and multiple times through the experimental stage of this project. Accompanying the brainstorm was the mood board of artist/photographers work which I had collected via Pinterest. Some of the work which was shown in this mood board I used throughout different artist research in addition to my written contextual element. The written contextual element of this project was an extremely important section of this project as it provided me with inspiration and multiple different starting points for my own work. I analysed the work of Anna Atkins, Kenji Shibata, Ellie Roden, Rebeka Campbell and Ben Giles and Angela Chalmers. The influence of Rebekah Campbell and Ben Giles collaboration is present within the early stages of my project as my immediate focus of this project was on paper collage. There is also a clear link to Kenji Shibata’s work within the early stages of this personal investigation. Overall, the written contextual element was very personal to this project as I hand-picked the artists/photographers who I wanted to research which I could build and shape my project around.
Following on from my written contextual element, I wrote my statement of intent. The purpose of the statement of intent was to outline the ideas and thoughts which I had for this project. I also outlined the mediums and processes which I wanted to use and experiment with. Despite the statement of intent being very personal to my thought process and my future plans for this project. From the blog posts which I had published up until this point of the project, the theme of my work was clear and my goal moving forward with this project into the practical processes was to ensure the theme of ‘Flora and Fauna’ was conveyed.
My first steps into the practical elements of this project was to conduct a photoshoot. There was no direct inspiration for this photoshoot from any of the artists which I had researched within my written contextual element. However, the flowers which I chose to focus on consisted of bright and bold colours which were present within Kenji Shibata, Ellie Roden Rebeka Campbell and Ben Giles collaboration. The first photoshoot which I conducted was successful and overall, I was happy with the outcomes but there were some factors which I failed to take into consideration which enabled me to improve my future photoshoots such as the photoshoot which I conducted which directly followed on from the first. Both of these photoshoots had a heavy influence in the early stages of this project however, later on I chose to focus on more landscape shoots. However, I learnt a lot in these two photoshoots about shadows/lighting in addition to how the camera works.
The first artist who I researched aside from my written contextual element was William Arnold. Arnold focussed is influentially visible throughout the work which I produced within the darkroom. Using Arnold’s work to influence my own was important because it enabled me to successfully produce my own work. The process of creating the lumen prints in the dark room was long and not something which I enjoyed and therefore the outcomes were not particularly personal to me. However, I enjoyed experimenting with the lumen prints in Photoshop and NegativeMe. Using Photoshop was an idea which remained throughout this project and become a dominant focus in my final stages.
I continued the process of lumen print experimentation for a long time as there were so many different possibilities and outcomes which I could produce using digital editing techniques. Once I had felt like I had come to an end and exhausted all of the possible outcomes from using Photoshop to experiment with lumen prints I decided to take my project into a different direction and take inspiration from my moodboard at the start of this project which is also shown to the left. I chose to experiment with wax. Throughout this process there were a number of unsuccessful outcomes in addition to the successful ones. This process was hard as I was limited with the inspiration which I had to complete it as I could not find an artist/photographer who worked with wax in the way in which I wanted to. The two most successful outcomes which I produced from this experimentation process was the flowers which I placed in a plastic cup and melted the wax around. These two wax objects are the type of thing which could be displayed on a shelf in a gallery if they were done more professionally and were perhaps on a bigger scale. The possibilities of using wax to experiment with flora was soon exhausted as it was extremely hard and slightly dangerous to do with the use of boiling hot water, this meant that I moved onto researching another artist which I had previously researched within my written contextual element. Ben Giles had significant influence within my work which is both visible and contextual. The collages which I produced with Ben Giles work in mind were successful although they were not significant enough for me to use within this project going forward.
Tumblr media
Alongside researching Ben Giles, I researched Karl Blossfeldt, Daniel Shipp, Sally Mann and Nicola Kloosterman. Blossfeldt, Shipp and Mann did not have much influence in my work at the time and as the project progressed. This was because they did not fit with the intended theme of my project and the outcomes which I wanted to produce moving forward although they provided a grounding for contextual influence and inspiration. Once I had created a second moodboard which helped me to display visually the inspiration which I was looking at which would help me progress this project, I started physically making collages from photographs which I had gathered from the internet in combination with a select few photographs from my first photoshoot. The techniques to create these collages were simple but effective however, by creating hand-made digital collages it meant that I was able to decide that I preferred working with Photoshop in order to create a number of digital collage outcomes. The hand-made collage shown below was the inspiration for the digital collage which is shown to the right of it.
Tumblr media
To create the digital collage, I used the work of Lara Jade who I later went onto research. I managed to produce a variety of outcomes from the experimentation process in which I used Lara Jade’s work, but I was not impressed enough with the outcomes which I was producing in order to bring the process forward with me as this personal investigation developed. An example of another outcome which I produced is shown below. Even though I think that this outcome was a success especially in comparison to the outcome which I produced from my hand-drawn collage, I did not see enough potential to bring it forward with me.
Tumblr media
My third photoshoot which I conducted at the time of my digital collage experimentations using the work of Lara Jade was the start of my experimentation process into digital collage within Photoshop. The outcomes from this photoshoot were incredibly successful and formed the basis of many of my experimentations which I created later in this project.
Tumblr media
Shown below is the first experimentation outcome which I produced using the photographs I had taken during my third photoshoot. For a first attempt at using Photoshop to create a digital collage which was of a different format to the ones which I had previously created, this was extremely successful even if I was not to take this forward with me and only use it as a reference/starting point. At this point in the project, I had moved away from the influence of the artists which I had first researched in both my written contextual element and individual artists/photographers at different points in this project. However, one of the earliest Photoshop experimentation outcomes which I produced with the influence of artists both new and old is shown below. The image to the left was the original artists work which I took influence from which is extremely visible within my own outcome to the right.
Tumblr media
There are many different elements within this piece which make is successful but there are also many elements which make it unsuccessful but most importantly I did not like the combination of the photograph in the background and the flower cut-outs which have been removed from photographs from my first photoshoot.
The next artist who I chose to research had both contextual and visible influence within my personal investigation was Jelle Marten. Marten’s used a variety of geometric patterns which was what I wanted to start experimenting with and using in my own work. Once I had used Marten’s work to influence my own, the outcomes which I was producing improved which was also the result of the practise which I was having with tools in Photoshop. Following on from my research into Marten’s I was also inspired by the work of Abigail Reynolds as it closely tied in with the work which I was producing. However, the purpose of my research into Reynolds was not to directly copy elements of her work into my own. I was inspired by her use of black and white photographs in the background of some of her pieces. I believed that this was something which I could successfully incorporate into my own work. The incorporation of black and white into my work was not challenging as it is something which I had done before with a previous experiment (shown above) although the use of black and white was a lot more successful in the latter experiments in this project. Taking inspiration from small elements of artists work is something which I continued to do throughout the remainder of this project. For example, I researched Shelley Davies work as I was inspired by her use of materials. In order to add more depth into my digital collages I chose to incorporate more physical elements.
My Photoshop experimentation process where I was continuing to take inspiration from Jelle Marten’s as well as develop my own ideas and outcomes started in November of this project and continued until the final stages where I felt I had enough outcomes in order to produce a final piece/collection of work which I felt represented my project as a whole. From November up until March I conducted more photoshoots which were successful as I had a large number of photographs which I was able to use in experiments going forward. As the project developed the quality of the photographs which I was producing improved which meant the number of unsuccessful photographs decreased. Aside from the photoshoots which I had conducted in a landscape setting I also chose to focus on photographing items which tied in with my paper collage element of this project which was inspired by the work of Shelley Davies. This photoshoot had more unsuccessful outcomes as I was conducting a photoshoot indoors which was something that I was not used to although my second photoshoot which also took place in doors as it focussed on similar elements dramatically improved as I was able to learn from the mistakes which I had made in the previous shoot.
The second shoot which I conducted indoors was the result of visual influence which I had gained from Sejben Lajos’ work. Lagos work varied from Shelley Davies as he focussed on the use of fabric within his collages whilst Davies used paper. The influence of Lajos’ work in my own is more contextual as it is hard to visually see the link between his and my own work.
The combination paper/fabric collage with landscape photographs was extremely successful and many of the outcomes were used within my final piece. Below shows an example outcome which includes a selection of elements which were incorporated as a result of the inspiration which I gained for them from artists/photographers who I had researched. As I had mentioned previously, the influence from these artists/photographers is subtle because I had made sure to make the work my own and not directly copy any of their work as I wanted my outcomes to be completely original.
Tumblr media
It has been mentioned before that I had created a number of unsuccessful outcomes, but I felt it was important to talk about these outcomes in my blog. This is because they were a part of my working process but most importantly, I wanted the viewer to understand and see my journey with this project from start to finish. Below shows one of the more unsuccessful outcomes.
Tumblr media
Whilst creating digital collages one of the most important elements was the construction of my hand drawn templates. These templates were used to construct the digital version using PowerPoint. By having the templates already designed, it made the process of selecting photographs to be used a lot simpler and less time consuming. However, it is important to take into consideration that not all of the templates that I had hand drawn were successfully constructed on PowerPoint which is why there are difference between them. This is because hand drawing can be more flexible than using geometric shapes on computer software. Despite this some of the majority of the hand drawn templates which were converted into digital versions were successful and enabled me to develop a wide range of outcomes.
As I my Photoshop experimentation process 46 I felt that I had exhausted the outcomes which I was able to produce with the processes and techniques that I was using. I decided to stop the experimentation process at this point and focus on reaching presentation methods as well as eliminating which outcomes I did and did not want to take forward with me into the final presentation method that I would choose to use. In order to start the elimination process, I created four contact sheets of all of my outcomes to date. I evaluated each of the contact sheets by creating a key and sorting which ones I did and did not like. Shown below is the first contact sheet which I annotated, and it shows the key which I used for all of the analyses.
Tumblr media
The elimination of outcomes took a considerably long time to do and the I ended up with fourteen outcomes which I was going to take forward with me. These outcomes (in my opinion) were the most successful but once I had decided on a final presentation method, I changed the outcomes which I wanted to use. This is because the first final selection that I had chose contained outcomes which were very similar to one another and could potentially look repetitive. Below shows the fourteen outcomes which I was planning on using before my research into presentation methods.
Tumblr media
The first form of presentation method which I researched was an internal exhibition. Internal exhibitions are a popular and effective way of displaying work to an audience however, internal exhibitions have changed as a result the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic meant that internal exhibitions were not allowed to take place, so artists/photographers created virtual exhibitions. I analysed an internal exhibition created by Taylor Wessing. There were no similarities between Wessing’s and my own work but the gallery which she had created online had potential to complement the outcomes which I had produced. To obtain a visual representation of what my work would look like in a virtual gallery I screenshotted some sections of the gallery and used Photoshop to place my outcomes over the top of Wessing’s. Whilst I thought that my work would work successfully in a virtual gallery, I wanted to explore other presentation methods before I committed to this one as I felt it didn’t fully represent/demonstrate the true extent of the detail within my outcomes.
Tumblr media
The coronavirus pandemic meant that outdoor exhibitions were a more popular form of presentation method because they allowed people to see the pieces in real life but in a safe manner. I again analysed an external exhibition in a similar way in which I did with the internal exhibition created by Taylor Wessing. The external exhibition which I researched was La Gacilly which takes place every year in France. The work which is displayed within the La Gacilly exhibition has a prominent environmental theme. This theme is like that which runs through my work. For this reason, I felt that the external exhibition would work effectively with my outcomes although there were so many issues which would need to be resolved for this presentation method to work. Despite my feelings towards the use of an outdoor exhibition space I chose to use Photoshop to layer my outcomes on top of the ones that were already in the exhibition.
Tumblr media
The final presentation method that I chose to research was a photobook. There was a variety of different photobook formats to choose to research so I chose to focus on the photobooks produced by William Henry Fox, William Klein, Edward Ruscha and Rinko Kawauchi. From the research which I did into the work of Fox, Klein, Ruscha and Rinko I decided that a photobook would best suit the outcomes which I had produced. Even though I found researching these artists useful as I gained inspiration to create my own photobook, I felt like it was important to see what a photobook looked like in person. After I had experimented with the arrangement of creating a photobook with my outcomes in ASDAs online software, I looked through a wide range of photobooks in person and took photos to document which elements I found to be most successful and therefore would consider incorporating into my own photobook. Elements such as including the title onto the spine of the book and adding in the link to my blog, I would not have thought of including if it was not for the inspiration which I gained through looking at photobooks in person.
As mentioned previously I decided to create my photobook using ASDAs online software because it was very simple to use and allowed me to save my photobook as a draft. This gave me more time to experiment with the possible layouts. The layouts which I experimented with were the result of influence from both the artists I researched and photobooks I looked at in person. Overall, I created five different experimentations but the most successful was the first experimentation I created which included one outcome per page. The reason I believed that this was the most effective was because it showed the true amount of detail that was in the outcomes in comparison to layouts which included more than one outcome/photograph per page. The selection of the outcomes that I wanted to use in my photobook was extremely hard as I had so many successful outcomes. Although, the outcomes were selected based on how well they worked in combination with one another. For example, I did not want to many outcomes which had similar geometric patterns in a row which is why I chose to add unedited photographs into the mix. This order was important because I wanted to ensure that the viewer was engaged within the book which is why the feedback from peers was extremely important when constructing and experimenting with the photobook.
Following on from the experimentation from the layout, I wanted to experiment with the title of my photobook. The title could be changed even though the overall title of my project was Flora and Fauna. There were several titles which I thought were effective although I thought it would be easier to stay with the title of Flora and Fauna to avoid confusion.
The cover of the photobook was one of the most important elements of the creation of the photobook because it would be the first thing that people saw when they picked up my photobook which is why I felt it was important to create multiple different experiments or possible layouts using Photoshop. The most difficult thing when creating the different front covers was the trying to decide which photographs, I wanted to use because the techniques which I was using in Photoshop were techniques which I had previously developed during my initial experimentation process.
The final stage which I had to go through before I could print and order my final photobook was to create a mini mock-up. This allowed me to see in person what the photobook would look like. However, the process of creating this mini mock-up was not an easy one which meant that I chose to only create the first few pages and organise the rest of the outcomes into the order which they would be presented. To do this I used PowerPoint which was quick and easy to use. Overall, I am glad that I created this mini mock-up because it demonstrated that I was making the right decision and using a final presentation method which best suited the work which I had produced.
The final post on my blog was my analysis of my final photobook. I thought it was important to talk about the dimensions/key aspects of my photobook as it gives the viewer a true representation of what the book looks like if they were not able to see it in real life. The inspiration and influence which I had from the photobooks which had been created by photographers I had researched is not explicit because I made the book my own. The inspiration which I gained from them such as including the address to my blog, I used in a different way to what the original photographer did. Overall, I am extremely happy with the outcome of the photobook and I believe that it successful shows my outcomes with a significant amount of detail which is something that would not have been achieved if I used either the external or internal exhibition.
Throughout this project I have learnt a lot of new skills relating to various aspects of this personal investigation. One of the most important skills which I developed and improved as the project progressed was my photoshoot techniques. The first few photoshoots which I conducted contained a lot of unsuccessful photographs however, as the project developed, I learnt which techniques worked best for the style of photographs which I was aiming to achieve. Aside from the improvement in photoshoot techniques my Photoshop editing skills improved significantly, this is demonstrated with the progression of my outcomes from the start of the project to my photobook.
Overall, I am pleased with the work that I have produced. I think that my work is a true representation of the significant amount of time and effort that I have put into this personal investigation. This is also representative with the quality of the outcomes that I have produced using Photoshop throughout the entire project especially towards the end where my Photoshop techniques had become more precise and elegant digital collages.
I have really enjoyed researching and creating this personal investigation due to the heavy influence on experimentation. The variety of experimentation process that I produced enabled me to learn from the more unsuccessful outcomes and enhance my skills further.
If I were to continue with the project, I would carry on experimenting with different Photoshop techniques and producing a greater variety of digital collages perhaps reintroducing processes I had used at the very start of this project such as lumen printing.
The Coronavirus Pandemic:
The pandemic did not affect my personal investigation in a negative way. As a result of the theme of my project being centred around the environment, I was able to continue with photoshoots on my daily walks. Again, remote learning did not impact my work in a major way as I was lucky enough to have access to the software which I needed to use to continue with my experimentation and creation of different outcomes. Because of the pandemic and the time which we missed in college we were given a six-week extension. This extension allowed me to make extend the time which I was able to spend more time with my Photoshop Experimentation Process in addition to conducting another photoshoot which would turn out to be my last photoshoot.

A Souvenir of Hell
A Souvenir of Hell, this is the first story I read out of the ones we were given, it is also the story I have decided to work with. I really enjoyed this story more than the other stories that I have read. I have a big interest in supernatural stuff, so I was immediately drawn to it from the moment of reading the title. I got a sort of mysterious feel from this story, you are not properly introduced to the mystical beings/characters from hell entering the shop. This makes it harder to understand who these characters are and what their backgrounds were like. This gives me a more open, free mind to think of the possibilities for these unique special characters. The two main characters are Anna and her grandfather, there is also minimal information on her grandfather, which I think will make things challenging for me.
Hole in the Wall
This was another one of the stories I read, this was also very interesting, especially the unexpected sad ending. This story was also mysterious however in the end the angle was a lair and everything became clear, their also seemed to be a lot of information on the angle character, Udi seemed a little harder to come up with his backstory, I also did not feel as connected to this story therefore I did not choose this one.
Baymax Task
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is my Baymax model after following along to Gary’s tutorial. I found the task quite easy to follow along with ran into minor problems was easily able to find a solution.
Head Retopology Task
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I have screen shots from following Gary’s retopology tutorial. I found this task quite easy to follow I ran into no problems, that being said I have tried to do this in the past and found it difficult. The tutorials that were given made this very easy and clear to complete task without an issue. I found this task enjoyable.
Tumblr media
Characters Backgrounds
When being given the task to find cues the author has given for the characters backstories, I found this really difficult after reading the story. There wasn't much information on any of the characters past, it was all mainly focused on the present time. However I was able to pick up some things on the characters, and have some sort of idea of what there background may be.
Anna:
Backstory
Anna is from Uzbekistan and has worked in her grandfather's grocery store for as long as she could remember. She will be very educated in running a shop as she grew up working in one.
She is not close to any of her family except for her grandfather as far as I know, signs she also doesn't like her father who is currently in hell, and is introduced as a nasty piece of work. This could be part of the reason Anna ended up working in her grandfather's shop.
Her grandfather’s store was built on the edge of hell.
The customers that come to the shop don't understand Anna, this is because they are from hell and don't speak Uzbek, Anna would try to make friends with them anyhow. This must make it hard for Anna to meet people or have proper conversation with anyone other than her grandfather. This makes Anna different to a normal person, she will not be afraid of demons or other spirit like entities like a normal person would.
The village she was living in was very boring. This could open the character up to adventure as she might get curious and explore new things. Also the village and shop was so boring Anna and her grandfather talked about unique customers that weren't so unique for days
She was unclear whether she wanted to see her nasty piece of work father.
She loved someone from hell
Anna’s Grandfather:
Backstory
Owns a Grocery shop
Has a granddaughter
Has a condition that only lets him sleep 1 hour a night, he would appear tired all the time.
Special Visitor:
There is not much information on this character but there are few details I can take and understand about the character.
Has spent 100 years in Hell we do not know the reason why
Because the character has been in hell they must of done something bad or feel guilty for something that happened in there life
character is attractive
A Souvenir of Hell Moodboard
Faithfull:
Tumblr media
I have found images relating to the story to keep the story telling as true to the original story as possible. When reading the story I felt that the visitors would feel out of place being back in the world of the living after 100 years. I also thought about whether the beings are alive or dead in the time of being back or are they just spirits this is not stated in the story therefore I can let my imagination run wild with this.
Distorted:
Tumblr media
I found it quite hard to think of an element to slightly change to distort the story a little, but enough to make a difference. I have decided to see what would happen if Anna’s special visitor was able to not leave and stay with her. I believe it would have a huge impacted on the current time which the story is focused on, leaving the ending with many more exciting possibilities, rather then Anna living a boring life. I get the idea that it would be sort of a prison break from hell, devils or angles being the police having to bring back the escaped prisoner.
Radical:
Tumblr media
What if the people who came back from hell weren’t nice like in the original story, what if they acted just as they did back in the past, or what if hell made them even crazier than what they already were. Also I was thinking what if the people in hell weren’t just people, what if they were various different creatures, with terrifying unique shapes. I also thought about what if it became a war hell against earth? Maybe every 100 years there is an outbreak in hell, but not all people or beast from hell are evil, therefore the special visitor and love part of the story could stay true to the original storyline with major differences.
Character Designs
Special Visitor
Tumblr media
This was my first idea for the special visitor character, I went with a more mysterious look as you don't get to know much about him and there is not much visual description said, therefore it is hard to understand how he will look. I decided to change my mind with this character design as I did not gather many images for my moodboard relating to this design.
Tumblr media
Here is my second attempt at this character. This time I focused on taking more from the radical moodboard I created and implementing that into this character design, though finding this challenging I think I did a decent job on designing the aspects of this character from the moodboard. The design could still be better. I am not the best at sketching although I could spend time and sketch out more ideas for a better result, however I am happy with the current one for now.
Tumblr media
This is the final outcome of this design. after putting the drawing into photoshop I traced over it to make it look better, smoother and ready to be model in Maya. I have also decided on the colours and added some minor details.
Anna
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is my sketch for the Anna character, I found some ideas from the story about what Anna’s background could be which helped me with the design a lot, I feel like There wasn't as much on the radical moodboard to go off for this character so I did more research and look at the fashion in Uzbekistan and went off of that. I felt more comfortable with this character as there was more description to go off. I tried to focus on the main point which was, she is a Uzbekistan grocery girl, because of this I found a great images with everything needed for the design of this character.
Tumblr media
Here is the final outcome of this characters design. Overall I think it went pretty well, it is now ready to be put into Maya and 3D modelled. I think there is room for improvement here, finding more moodboard images would be a big help, I did struggled to find images I was looking for this character.
Environment Ideas
Tumblr media
Here I have gathered some images on where the setting for the character could be, images of the mouth of hell and Uzbek villages and grocery store. For the setting I think I like the idea of the character inside of old sandstone built grocery store as this is where most of the story takes place.
Tumblr media
Inside of grocery store
Tumblr media
Sketch idea of inside the grocery store for the environment setting.
Tumblr media
Here I have created a 3d model of the base of the grocery store which I will used for my animation. I have used the sketch I previously drawn as a reference so far I think its a good layout and is going well.
Tumblr media
I have modelled the head of my character and unfolded the UV maps and is ready to be textured.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is my current character progressing I have modelled the hair and textured the head and hair using the UV editor I was able to use tools such as unfold, optimize, utilize and so on. it wasn't so easy getting a UVMap outcome that I was happy with, I had to play around with the the tools and manually use the them to get a reasonable UV guide, after that I took it into Photoshop and painted on my texture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I have modelled the whole character as well as textured everything I am really proud of how my character turned out as the is the first time I have created a full character with textures, I got on well with this part of the project, due to computer issues I have had times when Maya has crashed and even my entire computer during this process besides that, this part of my project was very enjoyable. Next I will rig the character ready for animating.
Tumblr media
I have started to rig my character here i have placed the joints and made sure the orientation of each of them is correct to make animating function correctly and a lot easier.

Fire Emblem Heroes Sprite Assembly Tutorial
Someone requested a Heroes spriting tutorial on Serenes Forest, so this is my attempt at making one. This is just going to be for basic sprite assembly, I might make separate ones later for poses/color/edits because this one's already kinda long and I'm kinda tired
Tumblr media
Keep in mind this tutorial is for Photoshop because that’s what I use so if you don’t use Photoshop hopefully someone else can make a tutorial for your program of choice. I’m also going to assume you have basic Photoshop knowledge, if you don’t and I say something you don’t understand, well… Google is your friend. Sorry to be blunt but if I’m here explaining all the Photoshop tools and what they do we’re gonna be here all day.
A few important things to keep in mind:
-Save often! Crashes happen and they suck.
-Be very careful before merging your layers/saving your work as a PNG file! If you close the document after merging layers, you WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER THEM. I would recommend saving one version as a TIFF or PSD file with layers and another as a PNG file when you’re finished. Otherwise you may want to go back and… say… give Ike an axe instead of a sword only to find out that you’ve merged the files and he now has a sword glued to him. Don’t be like me guys. Keep two separate documents.
First off, you’re going to want to go either here:
https://www.spriters-resource.com/mobile/fireemblemheroes/
Or here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/fireemblem/comments/5rxslp/fire_emblem_heroes_asset_collection_all_art/
To get the character sprite sheets. I mostly use the Reddit link but it’s missing a couple sheets (Alfonse, Anna, Sharena and a couple others) so if you can’t find something you can most likely find it on Spriter’s Resource. The Reddit link also gives you a bunch of .zip files so if you don’t want to deal with that you can go on Spriter’s Resource. SR might be missing a couple of the newer characters though, but if you can’t find someone there just let me know and I’ll add it.
The second thing you might want is a reference picture. This isn’t necessary, but if you’re just starting out or are a perfectionist like me you might want to get one.
If you have Heroes installed on your phone and your phone can take screenshots it’s fairly easy, just find the character you’re looking for in the game, take a screenshot, and upload said screenshot on your computer.
Tumblr media
If you can’t get a reference picture like this, you can try to get lucky Google-ing Fire Emblem Heroes (character name) and try to find a screenshot of them (I don’t think I’ve ever had luck using Google though) or you can search on Tumblr. I’ve had a lot more luck searching Tumblr, but it still doesn’t work all the time. Or you could just message me, I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten references for every character by now.
Once you’ve got your screenshot, open it and the character sprite sheet in Photoshop. I’ll be using FemCorrin as an example.
Tumblr media
The first thing you’re going to want to do is resize the reference pic(using Command T) so it’s roughly the same size as the sprites.
Tumblr media
Then you’re going to want to select one of the parts of the sprite sheet (I usually use the marquee tool) and press Command J to put that part on its own layer. If you did it correctly you should have a new layer with just Corrin’s head (or whatever part you chose) on it. Then use the move tool and drag it over to the reference photo and line it up on top of it. You may have to adjust the size of the reference picture to match the sprite size (You’re probably not going to get them to exactly the same size but try to get it as close as you can). Do NOT resize the sprite part instead of the reference picture. Then you’ll have to resize every other part to match up if you want it to look right, and it’s way more trouble than it’s worth.
Tumblr media
You can turn the layer visibility on or off as needed by clicking on the little eye next to it on the layers panel. This is extremely helpful for making sure it’s lined up on top of the reference picture.
After that just keep doing the same thing with every other part. Like a… Corrin-puzzle or something. Keep every part on it’s own separate layer- this will come in handy if you want to change a pose or something later.
Complications—
-If you end up with, say, Corrin’s cape on top of her, just drag the cape layer beneath whatever layers it’s hiding.
-Sometimes you’ll just end up with this part that you just can’t figure out what to do with. Just leave it to the end. It may be hidden in that particular pose so you may not need it at all or by the end you’ll have a random gap and realize where it goes.
-Keep in mind- sometimes the game bends and stretches some parts, particularly capes and wyvern/pegasus wings. If something’s not lining up no matter what you do, you may have to use Command T and mess with it a bit to get it to fit.
Tumblr media
Once you’ve finished your Corrin-puzzle, you can turn off the reference photo and double check that everything looks right. For example, here I realized I have Corrin’s hair over the cape layer when the cape should be on top.
Then you’ll probably want to give the character a weapon. Weapons can be found using the same websites as the character sprites, but weapons that were added with updates (ex. Spring weapons, Ragnell) aren’t on Spriter’s Resource (at least the last time I checked, they may have added it) so if you want those you’ll have to get them from Reddit. Or just message me and I’ll send you them.
Tumblr media
And there you go! Once you’re happy with it, you can use the crop tool to crop off the edges and save one file as a TIFF or PSD with layers and another as a PNG. PNG makes the background transparent, but it also merges the layers, so I recommend saving it as a TIFF or PSD file as well- even if you’re not planning on changing it later. You may end up realizing you messed something up later- believe me, it happens.
Anyways, I hope I explained this well, let me know if you have any questions or need clarification on anything. Or if you just wanna talk. I’m here for you 👍

15Social Media Lies Everyone Tells on Facebook and Instagram
Tumblr media
These days, most folks are on a minimum of one social media platform. And while Facebook and Instagram could seem like good ways to attach with friends, colleagues, and relations you do not see too often,  tons of its smoke and mirrors. People leave their thanks to present the simplest version of themselves on social media,  albeit that version isn't exactly real. So while your former flame could seem smitten with their new spouse, just know that their lovey-dovey comments on each other's photos don't show the entire story. Plus, with filters and photoshopping,  you cannot compare the way you look a day to someone's carefully crafted Instagram photos.
With numerous opportunities to make  "better" versions of ourselves online, the likelihood is that high even you've told a fib or two on Facebook.  it is time to urge real and mention the social media lies everyone's been guilty of telling at some point. 1 Lying about your accomplishments man seriously  lecture  his boss who appears to be upset iStock
Everyone wants someone to be proud (or envious) of them. But this got to produce other people view your successes and accomplishments as something extraordinary has created a culture of fabricating or exaggerating them, especially on social media.
Mike Bran,  founding father of  Thrill Appeal, says this is often something he sees only too actually because people "want to be acknowledged."  as an example, a lazy coworker who got moved into another position because they weren't performing well in their other role might go browsing and say they "got a promotion," so that people see the switch during a  positive light instead of a negative one. 2 Embellishing your importance at work millennial employees gathered in the boardroom for training, black boss CEO leader leading a corporate team during seminar learning at modern office. Internship and leadership coaching and education concept iStock
We all want to look  like we are the  head at our office—so much so that many of us will embellish the importance of their role in their company on social media. Shaun McDonough explained on Quora that he worked with people that were happier to receive an "inflated" job title over a pay raise since most of the people will know of your title but not your salary. 3 Acting as if your job is more glamorous than it is work  birthday celebration  selfie photo iStock
What you're posting on social media: photo booth shots from your company's holiday party, that just one occasion a star came into your office, or that massive bottle of Veuve Clicquot your boss got as a congratulatory gift when she was promoted. What  you are not  showing: restocking the mini-fridge for clients, that  air con  leak that's leaving a water stain on the carpet,  and therefore the  co-worker who can't  travel by  your desk at  the start  of the week without asking if  you've  "a case of the Mondays." Even the thing people complain about the most—their jobs—is something they can not help but glamorize on social media. 4 Exaggerating the highlights of your travels beautiful female London traveler takes a selfie picture  together with her  phone  ahead  of the Tower Bridge on a sunny day iStock
Of course, that photo ahead of the  Eiffel Tower and a perfectly-timed picture of an ocean wave are beautiful, but they do not show the ins-and-outs of your travels.  they do not show you racing to your gate, almost missing your flight.  they do not show you grumpy and jet-lagged, unable to go away your mediocre bedroom. But when vacationing, people only show the simplest parts of their trip.
A 2019 Jet Cost survey of quite  4,000 Americans showed that two-thirds admitted to "lying about their experiences with the weather, quality of accommodation, and amount of sightseeing done" when traveling, as Travel Pulse reported.  therefore the next time you're unhappy with a vacation, know that the majority of people have experienced an equivalent thing—even if they do not post about it. 5 Or just lying about the places you've visited follow me to the  Taj Mahal, India. Female tourist leading boyfriend to there magnificent famous Mausoleum in Agra. People travel concept iStock
And some people will go thus far on lie around the places they've visited entirely. Whether it's fabricating a vacation or simply lying to people about having gone somewhere within the past,  this is often not an uncommon social media practice. The thought blew up such a lot that there was a viral video trend where YouTubers would "fake"  a visit on their social media profiles, proving how easy it is often done. 6 Pretending to be in better financial standing than  you're man standing with satchel he cannot afford  during a  store iStock
Whether it is the flash of dollar bills on a video screen or showing off things online that you simply can't afford, people are always trying to form themselves seem richer than they're. Having designer items means you've got money, so you post a photograph of a designer bag from the shop rather than purchasing it—but  nobody has got to know that, of course. Even the phenomenon of individuals posing  ahead of luxury cars that are not theirs is an example of this. It's all about seeming such as you have wealth. 7 Feigning a "healthy" lifestyle taking an image of some food with a sensible phone. iStock
We understand. You eat one kale salad, and you would like the planet to understand you're turning over a replacement leaf if you'll. However, more often than not,  that may not the case. Natalie Levy,  founding father of  She's Independent, says this concept of wanting people to look at you as "healthy" coincides with a disorder called orthorexia.  this is often where people are hooked into eating foods that "people deem healthy," whether or not they're consuming it in healthy ways. 8 Lying about your fitness regimen brunette in sportswear taking a selfie while sitting on the gym floor barefoot. Night workout concept. iStock
On that same note, people also will lie around their workouts. As Levy points out, many fitness professionals or junkies  even have  "workout disorders or body disorders." But do they showcase that reality online?  almost. Instead, they "showcase the physical and speak to their success and achievements but don't touch on far more than the physical and makes they co-promote," Levy says. This, in return, causes people to unhealthily compare themselves to fitness goals which will be unrealistic because it's what they see being promoted online. 9 Acting as if  you recognize  about  quite  you do African American  girl  student in eyewear making selfie photo on the front camera of smartphone for sharing in networks sitting with literature book on the floor and preparing for the exam in the library iStock
It's simple to make a facade of data online. Post a photograph of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and other people will think you're an intelligent, well-read human being—even if you never made it past page one. As Karl Taro Greenfield wrote for The  NY  Times, with the emergence of  the web, "it's never been  very easy  to pretend  to understand  such a lot  without actually knowing anything." 10 Misrepresenting the realities of parenthood smartphone selfie family newborn mother concept. photo memory. happy motherhood. iStock
Your followers might imagine your children are "perfect little angels" if that's all you show about them online. But the realities of parenting are much more complicated than that. Sociologist Koyel Bandyopadhyay wrote on Quora that oldsters who are hooked into social media pass unhealthy complexes onto their children. "Parenting becomes a contest,  and youngsters attempt to  continue with their parents' ambitions," she wrote. "These  problems with  affirmation and competition percolate to children, who feel invested in their performative capacities,  meaning to  be 'perfect kids.'" 11 Pretending to always be the happy attractive  girl  standing giggling or laughing at something she finds very funny while leaning against a white exterior wall with copy space iStock
In Donna Freitas' The Happiness Effect,  an awesome  73 percent of scholars she surveyed said they "always attempt to appear positive and proud of anything attached" to their real names. Whether it's posting an old smiling selfie when you're actually in bed crying or tweeting about how #blessed  you're when you're struggling mentally and emotionally, it's clear life isn't what it seems on social media. 12 Or pretending to be  during a  happy, healthy relationship Romantic date. Charming girl and her boyfriend sitting at the table and holding cups of coffee iStock
Based solely on social media, everyone's relationship is essentially a well-directed romantic comedy. But people that address  Facebook or Instagram to boast about their romance more often than not are hiding something. Spoiler alert: Their relationship probably isn't that great.  during a  2018 survey from relationship counseling organization Relate,  quite half millennials (51 percent) admitted to creating their relationship seem happier online than it is, and 42 percent worked to carefully craft a "perfect relationship" online.  though, all of those couples are having disagreements behind the screen. 13 Lying about your single status finger of the woman pushing heart icon on the screen in a mobile smartphone application. Online dating app,  Valentine Day concept. iStock
On the opposite hand, dating expert Laurel House says some partners will go the other route and not post about their spouse in the least on social media.  many of us create a fake persona online as if they're living one life once they even have someone  reception. They keep their relationship hidden so that they can  entertain people or maybe cheat without anyone knowing the truth. 14 Acting as if you're over an ex Man taking selfie on the beach Shutterstock
Who among us hasn't gotten out of a relationship then posted a photograph where we glance happier than ever to point out the world—but mainly our ex—that we're thriving?  there are entire articles online dedicated to coaching people on the way to act on social media after a breakup. But simply because we do not all wear our heartbreak on our social media sleeve,  that does not mean we aren't experiencing it. 15 Faking flawless skin close up of cute Asian girl with glowing skin against the blue background. Beautiful face of the girl with fresh healthy skin. iStock
It's easy to match your raw, acne-scarred, dry skin to someone else's complexion in an Instagram photo, but you're just holding yourself up against a false representation. As Stacy Caprio, creator of the AcneScar blog, reminds us,  the reality  is not anyone has "perfect skin." The photos you're comparing your skin  to possess  filters on them and have possibly been "smoothed" out by tools like Facetune

My finished character design named Florence . This is my third attempt at drawing on the drawing tablet on photoshop and I am much happier with my character now after making a few adjustments . She is from the machine age and is a middle class factory worker . I need a lot more practice with shading and drawing straighter lines but for my third attempt on a tablet I'm happy with the outcome.

Creating the Screenplay for ‘Monsters’
Introduction
The genre for my ‘Moving Image and Fiction’ film is obviously going to be horror. The atmosphere I want to achieve in Monsters is ‘eeriness’- to evoke an unknown and unseen dread in the audience rather than create a horror film centred on explicit gore. I aim for the plot-twist to be revealed subtly at the end. My other key aim is to create a production that was circular in structure - where the end foreshadowed the beginning - a Groundhog Day in miniature.
Synopses of Screenplay/Storyboard
My screenplay centres on Anna Keswick, a fifteen-year-old who wakes up distressed in the night. She tries to get back to sleep so that they won’t hurt her.
She hears noises and, in terror, she goes into the basement to look and sees various distorted creatures rummaging around the place. Instinct tells Anna to get out, but she attracts attention accidently and the monsters proceed to pounce on her and cause her both physical and mental pain. Anna loses consciousness and perhaps ‘dreams’ what happens next.
We hear that the people responsible for the murder are taken into custody, but we do not find out the killers’ identities since the reporter’s voice is drowned out and moments later, Anna wakes up screaming again, and we see where it started. The screenplay ends before the film progresses much further and constitutes a narrative structure loop.
Structure
Within the screenplay, I subtly reveal that Anna was abused by her family as the film’s twist is having the ‘monsters’ in the basement being unidentified and terrifying and having the reporter’s speech be drowned out when about to describe their relation to Anna. I also show that Anna is trapped in a Groundhog Day loop, where she dreams about waking up in terror, her family killing her, the reporter talking about her death and Anna waking up in terror again, because she is in deep denial that her family are hurting her. I do not make clear whether Anna really wakes from a terrifying dream - where her nightmare is about to become reality, or the dream is repeating in a torturous cycle: as shown by the ending of the screenplay having the same monologue as the beginning.
The reason for this is to give spectators a feeling of unease and add horrifying ambiguity. Anna has had the nightmare many times before, as she goes down into the basement and notes that it is ‘always an attic’ in her dreams and when she wakes up from her “nightmares”, she has bruises that she thinks are from ‘kicking the wall too hard’.
The implied never-ending loop aims to unnerve and confuse the audience, especially as they wonder if Anna has really woken up at the end, or she is still involved in a nightmare. It also helps to reveal the true events behind her subjective experience and perspective against the reality of her situation.
Influences from other short films
When writing my screenplay, I had the short film, La Jetée (1962) in mind: a sequence of eerie, still images linked by voice-over, sound effects and music even though there is going to be live-action filming. I enjoyed the minimalism of La Jetée deliberately limited visual information left space for the voice-over to become a focus of the film and the translation of the screenplay was useful for me to develop my own work (The Script of Chris Marker's La Jetée is at: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~felluga/sf/ScriptLaJetee.html).
Another short film the script was influenced by was Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) - for its surreal atmosphere, images and its representation of the emotional state of a young woman and how it relates to events in her life. I loved its black and white imagery and its ambiguous tone – why does the woman feel and act as she does? I also echoed the themes of death, loneliness and mental torment in it.
In a different way, I was influenced by About a Girl for its realistic urban settings, speech from the protagonist being spoken as a monologue and the subject matter of a young person attempting to make sense of their frightening reality. A similarity that the screenplays of Monsters and About a Girl have is the innocence of the young female protagonist set against the hopelessness of their situations which is only steadily revealed as the narratives progress. From La Jetée, About a Girl and Meshes of the Afternoon, I borrow into the transcript the dark and tragic tone and the unhappy endings and the theme of life being hopeless for the protagonists - where their comforts are not enough to distract them. It challenges a common trend of mainstream media - of life being happy and unthreatening.
At the end of the screenplay, the ‘monsters’ that harass and kill Anna in her ‘dreams’ are implied to be her abusive family and Anna is in such denial about this possibility, that she is trapped in a “Groundhog Day” loop where she dreams about being killed, yet each time ‘wakes up’ to repeat the process before being able to fully recognise this truth.
In a first draft of the screenplay, I made the plot-twist explicit instead of subtly revealing it: I feel this subtlety gives the final draft of the screenplay an eeriness and ambiguity that earlier drafts did not have, since I was going with the idea of “less is more” and of leaving the spectator more space to make up their own mind. I particularly liked this aspect of Meshes of the Afternoon.
I initially depicted Anna running away from home, while her family and police pursue, as Anna reminisces about her past life and abuse (who she reveals as her parents). She fails to get away in the end and her parents threaten her out of sight of the camera. I felt that this moved too far from Anna’s subjective view and did not avail itself to the visual representations of her face.
The structure of Monsters works in the following way: as in La Jetée, the narrative explains what is happening at any point of the film, since both films use still images (this is my initial plan for the visuals) . Also, as in La Jetée, the images will aim to be dark and surreal and fit the tense mood - something also shared with Meshes of the Afternoon (with representation of death within).
Another influential film that helped me establish the tense, monochrome imagery of Monsters was the David Lynch film Eraserhead, where the boundaries between Henry’s dreams, fantasies and reality are deliberately blurred. This is what I aim to achieve with regard to Anna’s perceptions in Monsters.
Monsters also shares with About a Girl in that the protagonist is a neglected adolescent girl and the film deals with a mature subject matter, along with a dark plot-twist at the end, and the narrative told as a monologue.
The process of writing the screenplay
The images of the “monsters” are to be manipulated within Photoshop to match the mood of the film and the bleak world in which Anna lives. I also think that I might need to create some different imagery (i.e. not Anna’s face) where appropriate if it might help expand the expression within the film, without undermining its minimalist and unresolved qualities. I am thinking of using transparent film footage to overlay on the still images to imply the memories and feelings within Anna’s head.
The narration, sound effects and music are to be synchronised with the still images and live-action filming. I plan to perform the voice-over myself and employ a creepy, childish pitch-shifted voice, using the sound software, Cubase - where the voiceover, music and sound effects can also be edited and mixed – and so the audio could smoothly transition between different sections in a similar way to the images.
The story focuses on the experience of a young woman whose life is being destroyed by forces around her which are out of her control, told with an original filming style. I feel that the visual focus (mostly) on Anna’s face throughout the film (along with live-action filming with some transparent overlap) will make the subtle plot twist stronger and evokes the ‘nothing is scarier’ approach, where the most terrifying details are not depicted but are left to the imaginations of viewers.
In Monsters, there will be a ticking sound effect to confuse the viewer as to whether it was a dream or not. The theme I am focusing on was that Anna is abused by Monsters. The title has a double meaning - humans committing monstrous actions – as well as the more widespread use of the term to mean horrific non-human creatures. There will be a single, eerie and disturbing music track called Choral Build to make the film’s atmosphere tense and sickening and adding continuity to the sequence of both still images and transparency.
Overall, the current process of planning my film is rewarding, and I am learning how challenging it can be to explain visual and thematic.
