The Newsreader Turns Three Years Old! 💖

In the morning, it will have been three years since The Newsreader first aired on the ABC, on the 15th August 2021!

Since that day in 2021, we all found this show at various points along the way, and we have created this beautiful community around it across many platforms. As much as this is a day of celebrating what the cast and crew have put together, it is a day for us too, because we’ve kept The Newsreader’s online conversation going even when the media have stopped covering it. We’ve made it the cult hit it has become.

For me personally, I’ll forever be grateful to this show for coming into my life at the moment it did. From rescuing my sense of boredom during lockdown, to helping me grow into the person I’m meant to become, and for giving me creative opportunities that I could have never dreamed of, the past three years have been an incredible creative ride. The 15th August will always be a special day to me, to celebrate the piece of media that has changed my creative life. I am so grateful for the creative spirits behind it, the people in the fan community surrounding it, for nurturing my brain and helping me find my creative voice. It has meant so much joining the News At Six family.

I thank everyone who has contributed to this digital birthday presentation, for their words which demonstrates how much this show means to its viewers. I was in awe of everyone’s words and thoughts about what makes The Newsreader special to them. I’m proud of us all, and thrilled that we found a show which we feel at home in, especially those of us who feel different. There is a place for us after all, where we can feel loved just the way we are.

Peaky Blinders is really all about the psychology of Tommy Shelby. As such I always felt he should have an original song that sums him up - he’s the ultimate anti-hero - murderous, cold, terrifying, and yet has a deep love for his family and a naive childlike hope that he will one day rise above it all and be happy. I wanted to portray how he believes he is infallible to the point of godliness, and the lyrics “there ain’t no grave, can hold my body down” fit him perfectly. The song is all about destiny - it rolls forward and even Tommy doesn’t have the power to stop it. All the songs on this EP are trying to encapsulate the contradictions of this fascinating and enigmatic character. I’ve been in the mind of Tommy Shelby for years now, and this EP is a love letter to him, and my way to say goodbye to this iconic show.

The Newsreader Season 2

Ok so it took me an actual 3 weeks to get a hold of the season and watch it.

According to what I had seen on Tumblr I was literally expecting more news (as opposed to the amount in season 1) and a lot of Dale going through it

But boy was I wrong... I mean yeah Dale was definitely going through it, but why is it that Tumblr only posts wholesome shit? Like fuck, Dale literally became evil this season and y'all were dropping babygirl posts about him

This man backstabbed one of the few people who supported him, lost his will to live, and sold his soul to the industry all in the span of 3 episodes

I love him but holy fuck this guy needs to go on holiday.

Also, there aren't enough posts about how iconic Helen's walk-off was.

Throughout the entirety of The Newsreader’s S2, I collected the TV Week for each of the six episodes and weeks. There’s something seriously special about collecting physical media for this show, I feel as though it honours the period the show is set in and how things were in that 1980s era. I have been sharing these on my Twitter and in the Discord for the show too, but I thought I’d pop them all on Tumblr too for easy accessibility. These are all scans of my actual magazines which I have taken the time to physically scan, edit and put together.
