Deus Ex SPOILERS

Some of my thoughts about the Lebedev Airfield mission 'cause this video game is still stuck in my head lately.

So like, I figured doing a non-lethal run means nobody dies and everyone is happy with me (yes technically Gunther prefers if you go in guns blazing or otherwise let him fight people on Liberty Island, but if you KO all the enemies first, he won't have anyone to fight and he's still happy with you as long as you gave him a weapon), but it turns out it's not so simple.

Sure, you don't have to kill Lebedev (he's an unarmed prisoner who peacefully surrendered, after all), but Anna will. I tried so many things to stop her. I locked the door behind me, I blasted her with pepper spray, zapped her with the prod, slapped her in the head with the baton, even tried getting her health down with explosives first to make sure I could finish her off with nonlethal weapons, but as it turns out? She's immune to nonlethal damage.

You can't talk to her, you can't move Lebedev away from her, you can't knock her out, you can't knock Lebedev out (I mean you CAN and the game shows him as unconscious, but everyone's dialogue acts like you killed him and apparently it counts as a lethal takedown despite the description box showing "Unconscious"). The only way to save Lebedev (which is probably the most morally correct move) is to kill Anna first. Which means at that point you're not doing a nonlethal run. You can't play this game in a way that everyone lives and everyone is happy. You CAN be nonlethal, if your conscience can handle letting an innocent man get killed right in front of you. You couldn't stop Walton from killing prisoners earlier, but NOW you have a chance to do something. If you're willing to kill for it.

To JC's credit, he DOES talk back to Manderley about the situation, not that it was especially effective, but this is sort of the first time in the game that JC is really starting to question authority and worry about who he can trust. As a sidenote, Karen Rohan's performance of Lay-D Denton is SO GOOD here. She sounds so tired (sad?) when confiding to Carter, I really loved that. JC taking a tiny moment to speak openly and vulnerably about how things just don't feel right at UNATCO.

I haven't decided if I want to reload my save and kill Anna yet. I ultimately didn't because I knew that would piss off Gunther, and I was holding out hope that he would trust JC enough at some point to defect. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Even if you take down Lebedev yourself (I did this nonlethally, but it still counted as a kill), Gunther doesn't sound impressed when he congratulates JC. It's more of a reluctant "oh, congratulations," because even if he approved of you helping him at Liberty Island, he's (from my interpretation) STILL bitter about these brand new agents with Nanotech taking all the important missions while he, who has had years of experience and tons of expensive/invasive mechanical upgrades, gets put on basic security duties. Yet for some reason I keep trying. As I mentioned in a previous post, he's SO CLOSE to understanding the truth of things. Is this how Paul feels trying desperately to get JC to come to his side?

If you let Anna kill Lebedev, by the way, Gunther is disappointed that he didn't contribute, sure, but he sounds WAY more enthusiastic about congratulating her.

It's a neat thing about this game, the tiny details that change depending on how you play it. It really gets me immersed, and TERRIBLY emotional!

Story of initiation/ Nachleben der Antike

In der englischen und amerikanischen Literatur ist es vielleicht das Genre der Schullektüre schlechthin: Die sogenannte Story of Initiation. Das ist Literatur, die einführt und eingeführt wird. Wer das liest, so erzählt und zitiert Jesper Svenbro in seiner Archäologie des Lesens, die den Namen Ameisenwege trägt, wird in den Arsch gefickt. Das ist eine etwas subtile und ordinäre, durchaus auch pornographische Bescheibung für eindringliche Lektüre.

Die Amerikaner haben ein Talent für dieses Genre. Das muß man ihnen lassen. Sogar das Kino führt das regelmäßig vor, in diesem Jahr zum Beispiel mit The Holdovers, einem kleinen adventlichen Film zum Nachleben der Antike, in der Paul Giamatti eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit mit Aby Warburg hat.

Aby Warburgs Figur taucht natürlich zweimal in dem Film auf, zweimal als Vater derjenigen Figur, die sich allmählich als Protagonist der Geschichte entpuppt, einmal als der geistige Vater, ein Lehrer antiker Geschichte und einmal als schizoider Patient, der der leibliche Vater des Protagonisten ist. Der Titel des Films, The Holdovers meint die Überbleibsel oder Reste - und damit exakt dasjenige, das seit der Antike und von der Antike übrig ist.

Für die Art und Weise, wie im amerikanischen Kino Glätte und Gerissenheit, Oberflächlichkeit und Abgründigkeit zusammengesetzt werden, liebe ich dieses Kino immer wieder, auch wenn es immer wieder scheint, jetzt sei es endgültig vorbei mit allem amerikanischem Glanz. Das republikanische Erbe können sie hochhalten, das muss man ihnen lassen. Das fantastisch geschriebene Drehbuch wird von Alexander Payne hochgelehrt und dezent in bewegte Bilder übersetzt, die Dramaturgie der Herauschälung und Zuspitzung liefert einen kanonisch einsetzbaren Lehrfilm ab. Der Film ist nichts als light and magic, wie es an einer entfernt an Anna Karenina erinnernden Stelle zu den dunklen Kammern antiker Überbleibsel heißt.

Giamatti hat in dem Film nicht nur Ähnlichkeit mit Aby Warburg, sondern auch mit Gunther Teubner, einem derjenigen, die ich gerne als meine Doktorväter verstehe. Das ist die gleiche Augenstellung, ohne die auch das Werk von Gunther Teubner meines Erachtens nicht anmessend begriffen und betrachtet werden kann. Der Blick tritt auseinander und zusammen, laufend verhält er sich wie eine Lunge kontrahierend und distrahierend oder wie ein Ei kullernd. Der Film schliesst für mich ein Jahr am MPI ab, für das ich dankbar bin.

I briefly talked to a bunch of character.ai JCs and there was one in particular that was really interesting (In fact, the others were pretty boring). He:

Thought Paul was a wuss constantly messing missions over morals and ethics. Believed he wasn't cut for UNATCO.

Thought of Anna as a saint.

Related to Gunther.

Believed Walton was crazy but a needed type of crazy to deal with the NSF.

Admired Manderley.

Disliked the GEP Gun and favored the Dragon's Tooth as the ultimate weapon.

Even though I revealed all the crooked stuff UNATCO was up to, he said the organization wasn't perfect and it was the only thing stopping the terrorists.

This was UNATCO-Born JC, right? The one you were supposed to play as if you choose to continue working for them.

Paul and Anna are cuddled up on the couch when Gunther walks in. They're knocked out and snoring, and they've still got blood caked on them, which is disgusting in Gunther's fine opinion, but there's nothing the two of them seem to love more than butting heads and then going way too hard on a mission and then proceeding to drop dead in a pile the moment they get through the door afterwards.

Gunther plops the paper fast food on the safe house dining table, and smiles reflexively. His two idiots.

Paul stirs at the smell, Anna at the sound.

Paul blinks a couple times before yawning quietly and then jerking his head in a vague come 'ere gesture. Wonder of all wonders, Anna too sparks awake and glances over. She even wiggles a little, pressing herself into Paul's side so there is a bit of room for Gunther to squish himself beside them, if he wanted.

They both stare at him as expectantly as one can, when one is more asleep than awake.

His smile softens. Every bit of the mission is forgotten.

"Allow me to eat, first," he tells them. He well knows they'll be back asleep in a few minutes at most.

Sure enough, they're out like a light again in a matter of moments.

He takes an additional moment to sit and simply watch them. Anna is leaned over, drooling on Paul's shoulder. He himself has got his head stuck at an angle that's going to give him horrifying fits in the morning. One of his legs is half slung off the couch, the other has somehow ended up tucked under him. Anna sniffles a little in her sleep - Gunther will have to watch that - shifts and then slips off Paul's shoulder and lands right on top of a particularly icky patch of blood and mud on Paul's thigh.

They're covered in sweat, and street, and exhaustion.

They're the most beautiful people Gunther has ever seen.

And they're both his. They're his.

He's theirs.

It's astonishing.

But their sleepiness is starting to infect him. He feels his own yawns coming on, and that won't do. Someone has got to do the mission report.

He grants himself one last minute just enjoying the sight of them before he burrows his head back into his work.

DXHC // beach_day

I have beach-y headcanons for if they all went to the beach together and I shared them with @kentaurex so now I’ll share them with you guys, too.

Adam Jensen: Spends all day in his hotel room with the curtains wide open, napping in bed. When the sun starts to go down, he hits up the tiki bar. On days where he goes outside, he sits in the pool and has snacks at the edge of it and occasionally has a light beer or fruity drink. He won’t go in water because of #Panchaea but likes the pool because the water is warm from the sun and not cold like the ocean.

David Sarif: Spends all his time gettin’ a nice tan. It’s gotta be even. He uses one of those ridiculous mirror things for tanning along with the little stupid goggle eye-cover things. Absolutely would go to the nude beach and terrify his co-workers. Wants to try ALL THE DRINKS but his tolerence isn’t what it used to be so he starts making dumb jokes and thinks they’re overly funny.

Faridah Malik: Surfs nonstop. She just cant sit still. Runs up and down the beach with either a surf board or a boogie board all day long. The few times she's still she's chowing down on vendor food and insists on trying new things, and has an adventurous diet of "try anything once". Has stopped to splash Frank by the pool and make him lose his mind at least once, and giggled while Adam tries to not laugh at Frank's "OH MY GAWD DO YOU MIND" outburst.

Francis Pritchard: He’s that guy who's trying to do work on his laptop at the beach. He’s always doing it and sometimes won’t go out. Once the sun is down, he goes and swims in the pool and sits half in the ocean waves to enjoy the cooler air and night sky sky over the water. He'll take any chance he gets to photograph the sunset and the sunrise, and is up early to make sure he gets the best recording possible of the waves washing over the sand. He makes it a secret.

Jim Miller

He has a strict "no work while we're here" policy. Surf board main. He won’t stay out of the water. Came back to shore one (1) time and Mac bitched about something and he dove right back in. Absolutely gets sloshed at the bar and sleeps on his beach towel under the umbrella, sunglasses on like he thinks it's fooling anyone.

Duncan MacReady He has insisted on super soaker party, because he wasn’t allowed to bring a real gun. The whole department that came along gets involved, and eventually him and Adam get way too into it and everyone bails when Mac reveals he came prepared with water balloon "grenades" and absolutely wages war on Adam's face with them. A stray one hits Miller and they both drop the guns and book it across the sand in a gleeful manic screaming panic.

Aria Argento She slowly manages to ease Adam into trying out the ocean water. He's hesitant but she never pushes him very far. Lurks with him in his hotel room when he doesn’t want to come out. They watch the programming on the TV and have a laugh. At night she asks if he wants to go out and get dinner and eat it on the beach. Cue romantic cute cuddly shit.

Václav Koller He isn’t used to being outside but now that he's been forced to, he's a maniac, maaaaniac (on the beach)! Absolutely mirror fold to Malik and neither of them would be able to sit the fuck down. It gets to the point they steal Mac's super soakers and go racing down the beach screaming as he fires at her. By the time they’re both actually worn out they're just collapsed in the same room passed the fuck out because apparently I imagine they get along perfectly. Vac is face down on the floor snoring.

Ivan Berk He is nothing if not inovative and decides he can swim too because ISOLAY FOOTS WITH FLIPPERS!! He's very good at swimming but complains when the sand grinds in his augs. He has discovered several people by the pool and decides a cannon ball is in fact the best course of action and absolutely howls when everyone shrieks in fear. They laugh along eventually, except for Frank who is still shrieking. He's forgotten his laptop has a waterproof case. Ivan likes the beach stalls for ice cream and haunts them forever. He's found a penguin on a surf board key chain and attaches it to a spot on his arm. He is very proud of it.

Bob Page He got a really bad sunburn and went home early because fuck the beach who even likes beach fuck the water ugh this is awful.

Bonus DX1 Beach Headcanon

Anna Navarre She’s decided to go snorkeling to try and find a real jellyfish. She finds one and just is like taking a million pictures and later shows EVERY SINGLE ONE to Gunther but most have almost no real difference. She spends a while petting it because her augs let her. She has breathing upgrades and uses them to stay under the water for as long as possible. They see her like once, and it’s when they’re leaving.

"She’s gone. She lives out there now." “Was nice knowing her." “Was it?" “No, she's spooky."

Gunther Hermann He’s discovered no less than a dozen orange-flavored tropical alcohol drinks and orders one of each, all at the same time. He is seen frequently walking away from the bar with them in his arms, and he’s never been happier to finally get to drown himself in his one true love: orange drinks. Anna makes a super soaker modification for him that’s a skulgun. He can live his dream safely now, even if only for a little while.

JC Denton He wears his trench coat and shades to the beach, and everyone tries to get him to take them off. He cannot, for fashion is of the utmost importance. He stands around a lot and eats junk food and absolutely cannot be arsed to partake in fun but makes quips from time to time.

Paul Denton He is never in one place for long and is barely at the beach at all. He comes back to the hotel at the end of the day with a million bracelets and necklaces from the boardwalk shops. He shows up with shutter shades one time and immediately says “hey guys look, I’m JC”. At one point after being unable to convince JC to take his coat off, he makes like he’s walking off, only to run at him full tilt, nab him around the waist and launch them both into the pool amidst JC’s frantic screams of “THIS IS REAL ITALIAN LEATHER!!”

“Let’s start a band,” Paul says suddenly, looking up from a file heavy with mission intel.

She’d prefer not to pay attention, and yet, it’s so bizarre, so out of the blue, she can’t help but to look up and check. Yes. It is Paul sitting there. He’s looking at her expectantly, although it’s clear he’s expecting agreement rather than dismissal.

She glances over at his notes. They should be full not of tactics and inferences and analysis. Instead, he’s written what looks like potential practice schedules.

“Can you play anything?” he asks. She could ignore him, but they’ve been a team for a while now.

“Absolutely not,” she says out loud, nods, and considers the matter over.

Apparently, Paul is not quite finished with the idea.

“What about you?” he asks across the table, shifting in his seat and brushing the folder away.

Anna envies Gunther. He has no qualms about ignoring Paul.

“Come on, guys,” Paul says. “Pretend like it’s a team-building exercise. You can be base, Anna, and, you can do drums.”

Gunther’s eyebrows raise slightly. His writing slows. Paul has many, many flaws, in Anna’s estimation, but a lack of attention to detail isn’t one of them.

He zeroes in on Gunther’s wavering resolve, and Anna sighs inside.

“It’ll be fun,” Paul promises, with misplaced sincerity.

Gunther puts down his pen, says hm like he is actually considering the proposition, and Anna feels deep in the base of her instincts that this is one of those times, the moment before the mission goes wrong, the second before you get ambushed at a drop zone, the footstep before you turn a corner and see a LAM rigged to a wall.

“I-” Gunther starts.

“That,” Anna says, cutting him off and snapping shut her binder, “is a promise you can’t possibly be certain of.”

Whatever contrary energy had built up in the room seems to dissipate. Gunther gives Paul a faint shrug, pen back in hand.

“She is correct,” he says, and leans back over his own papers.

And with that, the matter is closed. Paul goes back to his work without another word, which is all she wanted in the first place.

Despite having been born in Germany, bass-baritone Paul Schöffler became a favorite in Austria, both at the Vienna Staatsoper and at the Salzburg Festival. Aside from Friedrich Schorr, he was undoubtedly the finest, most complex interpreter of Hans Sachs in the recorded era. Although his voice could sound slightly dry and lacked the imperious sound for Wotan (which he did sing on occasion), it served him well through an unusually long career. His Sachs at the Metropolitan Opera in November 1964 was superbly sung, remarkable in its stamina, even though Schöffler was 67 at the time. A live recording of Strauss' Daphne made in Vienna that same year confirms the impression. The work of an aristocratic artist, Schöffler's interpretations of such roles as Scarpia, Don Giovanni, and Iago were always distinguished, even when not stylistically definitive. The years since his retirement from leading roles have not produced a remotely comparable artist.Schöffler studied with Waldemar Stägemann in his native Dresden before traveling to Italy to work with baritone Mario Sammarco. His 1926 stage debut took place in Dresden in the role of the Herald in Lohengrin, beginning an association with that theater that continued until 1939. In 1939, Schöffler was engaged by the Vienna Staatsoper and remained there until 1970 when he was 73 years old. During his long career, he also sang in London, at Bayreuth, at the Salzburg Festival (1938 - 1965), in several Italian theaters and in America at the Metropolitan Opera, in San Francisco, and in Chicago.Schöffler's London debut came as Donner in a 1934 Rheingold, conducted by Beecham. He was well-received by both the public and the critics, later confirming the positive first impression with his "excellent" singing of the title role in Weinberger's Schwanda, the Bagpiper. In 1936, he sang Scarpia and, with the visiting Dresden Opera, Figaro in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro (sung in German as Die Hochzeit) and the title role in one performance of Don Giovanni. In the Mozart operas, he was praised for both fine singing and histrionic aptitude. He undertook such other roles in London as Jochanaan, Kurwenal, the Rheingold Wotan (described as "lightweight"), and, following WWII, Don Giovanni ("Germanic"), Don Alfonso, and Pizarro with the visiting Vienna Staatsoper company. With the Royal Opera House company, he repeated his Kurwenal and Rheingold Wotan and added Gunther and his genial Sachs.At Salzburg, Schöffler created the title role in Gottfried von Einem's Dantons Tod in 1947, and, five years later, he premiered Jupiter in Strauss' Die Liebe der Danae.Schöffler's first American stage appearances came well after WWII, when the singer was already in his early fifties. His Met debut was on January 26, 1950, as Jochanaan, a role he sang to the spectacular Salome of Ljuba Welitsch a few weeks later. Schöffler's performance was praised as that of a superior artist, delineating the character with intelligence and involvement. The bass-baritone faced off against Welitsch in two other productions, setting his Don Giovanni at odds with her Donna Anna and, as a "brutish "Scarpia, menacing her fiery Tosca. Over nine seasons, Schöffler sang a total of 91 performances. His 14 roles included Pizarro, Amfortas, Kurwenal, Oreste, and the Grand Inquisitor. San Francisco heard him, too briefly, in Wagner and Strauss, as did Chicago.Although Schöffler's voice lacked a sensuous timbre, its warmth and firmness left a positive impression, while his musicianship and artistic integrity were unfailingly of the highest order.

I'm now at the part of the game right after reuniting with Paul at the hotel.

Specifically I got as far as Battery Park before surrendering to Gunther (I ran away from Anna in the subway 'cause she started blasting and I got scared lol). So now I'm trying to escape MJ12 facility.

I say this from a place of being a JCxGunther lover, but as intrigued as I am about this "Daedalus" guy (and suspicious), it would have been SO much more poetic if Gunther had been the one to free JC from his cell. You know, just like how JC saved Gunther back on Liberty Island! 🥺💦 After all, he said he'd never forget a favor, right? What a perfect way to have returned the gesture!
