CC: I portrayed Sebastian assaulting Clary to show people just how evil he is!
Riiiiight... Because killing children, attacking and destroying cities and attempting a genocide aren't signs of REAL evilness!
Sure Jean.
Gosh I hate when authors do this. Like:
"This character is trying to kill the mcs, won't stop at anything, will kill and sacrifice people for his goals...
and he also kicks puppies!!!"
But CC's case is particularly heinous because she literally used sexual assault as a cheap plot device when IT WAS NOT NEEDED!
We already knew Sebastian was the bad guy. When knew when he killed Max and Hodge in cold blood and tried to kill Isabelle. When knew when Alicante was attacked by demons for the first time in centuries because of him.
She could have elaborated on and given his character some depth. But no, instead she made him a cartoon villain with SA sprinkled on top for that perverse incest fetish of hers.
Sexual violence is something that happens to real people, and the ways it can happen are many. It is the most insensitive and perverse crime, to force yourself on someone, to violate them and their bodily integrity. It leaves the victim alive to deal with that trauma. Sexually assaulting anyone is loathsome, it’s sickening and disgusting. It is by no means a light subject to discuss, to deal with, and definitely to write about, which is why I honestly don’t think it is never needed if the story does not focus on that and handle such a sensitive topic as this appropriately.
Sebastian forcing herself on Clary to showcase how his character is so EeEeViL is not appropriate. It’s not about Clary or how Clary feels about it or how she deals with it: It’s about how evil and bad Sebastian truly can be. It’s just that, a cheap device that simultaneously craps on the issue because it doesn’t take Clary into consideration. Like you said, Sebastian was already evil and vile when he murdered a child. That was the whole purpose of Max’s death.

Something that I noticed a lot in fantasy books is people always trying to excuse or redeem male abusers. Rhysand is clearly an abuser but apparently, it’s okay because he explained why, the darkling did everything wrong to killing entire cities to manipulating and abusing girls but people don’t only say that he should end up with one of the girls he abused but they also say that he is a morally grey character when it’s quite evident that he isn’t. Maven literally craved the letter on Mare and was abusive with her and people still say that he should end up with her and that he didn’t deserve what he got because he has a sad backstory? People say that Sebastian Morgenstern didn’t deserve what we got even when he literally tried to rape his sister. I don’t see anyone trying to redeem Amarantha that is clearly a villain and an abuser so why redeem a man that is an abuser?

Hear me out on this though
Good people in real life are more evil than fictional villains.
No tea. At all.
Just pure and simple facts.

It's wrong to shame someone for what they ship.
Unless they ship Morgencest/Clabastian, then shame their ass all the way to the bloody moon. That shit's nasty.
It being INCEST should be a big enough reason, but I'll go on ahead and throw in that Sebastian once tried to rape her, and he also physically & emotionally abused her. Many times.

I will admit that Sebastian had a lot of good potential to be a compelling villain but Clare didn’t really do anything with his character. I’m pretty sure the only personality traits he had were being attracted to Clary and being evil. I’m fairly sure he was only inserted into the story so Clare could have her incest relationship but for real this time? But the fact that the relationship between Jace and Clary, and Sebastian and Clary are actually the same - incestuous, and Jace and Sebastian are both toxic and abusive - yet they’re presented and framed differently: what Jace and Clary have is beautiful and forbidden love while Sebastian and Clary are very wrong, is kind of manipulative writing on Clare’s part imo? They’re both the same thing, they’re both incest and they’re both wrong. Also held up by the fact that Jace is the good guy and Sebastian is not. Yet fans buy into this and agree with Clare’s writing. Btw if Sebastian lusting after Clary was supposedly wrong then why are there so many scenes of them together. If the author thinks that it’s morally wrong you really have to question the sheer number of scenes in which Sebastian tries to assault Clary and why she even chose to write that in the first place. It’s not sending any kind of message, there’s no point in them. It’s kind of surreal tbh? Why did Clare choose to write her villain like this? Who writes their villain assaulting their sister so many times without any “moral of the story” thing in mind for it? Like there’s no point lol
Thanks for listening to my rant lmao
Rants are always welcome! :)
And YEP. He is pretty much a caricature of a proper villain. Sebastian is EEEVIL. He’s so EEEVIL because he does EEEVIL things. Sebastian is sometimes so over-the-top evil that it’s hard to imagine him imposing threat that is not incredibly convoluted. He just doesn’t feel threatening at all. He sends edgy messages in angel blood, kills little boys, forces sexual acts on his sister, and is totally homophobic. I mean, those are just vile but at the same time, do you villains have to do their absolute worst for them to considered villain?
Oh, and Sebastian speaks to Jace how disgusting Jace’s “incestuous” feelings for Clary were while he tries to act on such things himself. Dude.
And I agree with that incest aspect. It wouldn’t resurface if Clare wasn’t so intent on having it as a theme. There isn’t really scenes, to my memory, where Clary suffers from Sebastian attempting to force himself on her. Makes me wonder whether Clare didn’t think of it as a sexual assault in that sense—as sexual assault for sure, but not as a trauma for Clary—so she didn’t write Clary suffering from it either.
The whole escapade with Sebastian, Clary, and Jace was so weird and I remember weirdly little about it other than it being way too long and way too senseless.
