I feel like when I’m reading or watching something, for me to like a hero, they have to

1) have ambition about anything

2) not be annoying

3) not excuse their shitty behaviour with their shitty childhood

4) not be so self-righteous they don’t see their own flaws

For these reasons I hate with a burning passion Jace Herondale, Clary Fairchild, Eli Ever, Tiberius “Cal” Calore VIII, Dean Winchester, and Legend/Dante Santos

Jace is constantly doing something shitty in every book and people don’t care and they just put up with it for some reason. In CoG he belittles Clary because he wants to push her away but keeps coming back to her. He also keeps coming onto Clary when he thought she was his sister and said that cursed sentence in CoG that I need to bleach from my brain. I know if he said that shit to me I would’ve punched him in his stupid face cuz who does he think he is? He mocks the werewolves after they lost a child in their pack, he’s just awful to Alec at times, he doesn’t seem to understand there are consequences to his actions and just does shit because he wants to. He had the emotional maturity of a dried up pinecone.

Clary also does so much shit and people don’t call her out because she’s the protagonist and she just lets Jace do whatever to her because he’s hot. Girl please get a grip. She slut shames Izzy because apparently women aren’t allowed to have a sex life or wear revealing clothing 😒 girl you kissed someone you thought was YOUR BROTHER!! She dated Simon to get over Jace and then kissed Jace in the Seelie Court, and repeatedly thought about Jace in a romantic sense WHILE she thought they were SIBLINGS! I can’t.

Eli is so self-righteous, annoying and hypocritical. He uses God and religion as an excuse to kill innocent people which is just disgusting. Like I get that he thinks being an EO changed a person because Victor became different but he is an EO himself and he just takes it on himself to murder innocent people for simply existing.

Cal has no desire to do anything, at least up to the beginning of King’s Cage he doesn’t (where I currently am). He knows how poorly the Reds are being treated and he doesn’t want to change anything because (and I’m paraphrasing) there would be outrage among the Silvers and a war would break out. Bitch you are already at war! He’s the reason why so many innocent young Reds have lost their lives fighting in a war they have no say in. He sees the Scarlet Guard killing Silvers and he doesn’t try to stop them. He sulks and whines but doesn’t take any real action, which he could if he actually wanted to. He stalks around the camp like Mare’s dog and thinks he’s better than everyone.

Dean Winchester is an abusive asshole. He locked Sam in the cellar when he was addicted to demon blood when he knew the withdrawal could kill him. He shit on Sam for being manipulated. He’s made horrible perverted jokes about women, might I remind y’all of the high school episode (he was at least 26 at the time). He guilted Sam for leaving him in Hell and Purgatory when he did THE EXACT SAME THING when Same went to the cage. He threatened Kaia, a teenager at gun point for his own selfish purposes. He abused Jack til the very end, yelling that he wasn’t family when Jack had sacrificed his soul and life for the Winchesters, and made Jack hate himself for being born. He was shitty to Cas in so many seasons and didn’t care that Cas just went through seeing his son die and wasn’t able to save him. He violated Sam’s body by tricking him into letting Gadreel in which led to the death of Kevin and had the audacity to think he was wronged.

Dante is shit. Julian, his brother, lived with him for centuries, followed him wherever he went and loved him unconditionally. All Julian asked was for Dante to love him back, which he never did. When Julian finally found someone who loved him, Dante made fun of him. And then in the next book he gives up his immortality for Tella, a girl he has known for literal months at most. He didn’t love his brother, who has been with him since the beginning, enough to give up his immortality but he loved this random girl he has known for a couple months at most to give it all up?? Tella should’ve left him in the dust just like she did Jacks and went off on adventures by herself and met someone that wasn’t a twat.

I’m rereading chain of thorns and I’m at that part. y’all know the part. where a certain someone should not have died and how unnecessary it was. I like how grace is all like “you can stop this lucie.” bitchhhhh, couldn’t you have said that- hmmm, I don’t know maybe before Tatiana came out? like it’s so unnecessary and I am not here for CC hating the lightwoods and making sure each one from every generation dies.

Max- like what was he, an eleven year old? GONE. poor little boy 😭😭😭

Benedict- ok dude had it coming but he’s still a Lightwood and he died. plus Will makes a joke about it to Gabriel as if it’s not Gabriel’s trauma? the fuck. gabriel deserves better plus he needed more page time!!!! Gabriel and Gideon lost a father but yes, let’s make jests about it.

Kit- poor, sweet Kit. did not deserve to die like that. but of course, she’s not going to kill off any herondales because my god, we couldn’t survive that. can’t have our golden eyed and insufferable boys die. what vexed me most about this is the way CC went about it. I get they’re in this war but someone who is family and is practically family to y’all just died!!! but ok let’s grieve James and Matthew who are very much alive. wouldn’t be a CC book if we didn’t focus on the herondales.

tatiana- deserved it but I did not like how it was Cordelia. it should not have been her who killed her. Gabriel loses a son because of her, Gideon loses a daughter, Anna, Thomas, little Alexander, and Eugenia lose their brother, sister, cousin. literally Thomas loses his best friend who is basically his parabatai and his sister within the same year ish. I’m not sorry because it should not have been Cordelia to kill this wench.

Barbara- poor Barbara 😭 just wanted to marry Oliver but no, guess she’s got to go too. I would have liked to see more of her.

I swear that I do not want Magnus and Alec go adopt another kid if CC is going to kill them off. I know she holds herondales to this high degree but STOP HURTING THE LIGHTWOODS. yes, they are the best characters. without them, the world would probably be doomed. (looking at you jace lol we know you would’ve died without Alec or Izzy.)

adding Robert. he gone too. she even kills all the lightwoods in Thule like what is her obsession with hating this wonderful family? this is why I would rather she stop with the series. these are some of my fav characters but her carelessness and her desire to put one family above everyone else and simply act like nobody else matters is exhausting. as you know, I adore the lightwoods but it’s so draining to see them being treated like this. the only ones who I was glad to see gone was Tatiana and Benedict. you’ll never see her kill off a herondale. Stephen does not count because he wasn’t really introduced, and the other members were barely in stories, just mentioned.

and it’s fine if she has a preference. I love the lightwoods so much but there’s a different with you killing off multiple members of a family and writing out your fav family as untouchable. ahhhh, poor kit. he died and only Thomas and Anna had emotions through it all. we don’t even get to see Gabriel’s or cecilys reaction. what the fuck. I don’t know what CC was feeling writing this but I would have honestly rather she waited until she felt like writing it. it’s not fair what happened to Kit or the family over and over again. I wish she would do better but that’s too high of a hope for CC.

Another TMI movie rant, WHY ARE JACE, ALEC AND IZZY ALL BRITISH?!?!? Even with the main Shadowhunters base is in Europe, Robert and Maryse were cast out, Alec wasn't even born yet!!! I honestly find it difficult to care about ANY character in shadowhunters except magnus.

• Idr hate clary as much as the fandom does but she IS kind of boring and the typical YA protagonist.

• Jace is just...whipped for clary wfor no no particular reason?? I get that he relates to clarys situation and wants to help but like?? Bro?? You barely know her and she doesn't know shit about the shadow world tf are u doing? 😭

• Alec is fine ig, I relate to him and actually understand him and he's actually pretty ok-ish as a character but I need to see more of him.

• izzy is just...there. she is mediocre as well but she's fine?? Idrk

• Simon was actually the only rational character at the beginning and damn, I feel extremely sorry for him. But he feels really trope-y (mc's male BFF who's in love with her but she chooses the brooding bad boi over him).

• Magnus is just *chefs kiss*. I really like him and his sass, how fabulous he is, his diva complex, it's all just so entertaining to watch. I want to see him more outside being Alecs LI.

i don't know why so i was wondering if someone with a similar mindset could share their experience

I was thinking of characters that i don't like and out of the male ones Jace from TMI has an asured place in the top 5 (not top 1, Paris from the illiad is never moving form there) and is mostly because of how little self awareness he is writen with. But at the same time, i call Celeana from Throne of Glass a disaster masterpiece, she is like reading a book version of the room : she is so badly crafted , makes so little sense , lacks any kind of self awareness; is hilarious, i actually enjoy how bad she is written , is an unique experience.

But with Jace the no self awareness just irritates me. And i can't find myself why i enjoy Celeana (at least at the first half, second half of the book is boring as hell) but can't stand Jace.

Would like to know if it happens to someone else and why this can be, maybe i have a double standard i didn't know about

Omg im rewatching season 2 of sh and oh my god, the scene where Jace asks about Magnus’s intentions pisses me off so much because jace pretends that he has Alec’s best interests at heart when HE’S the one who has almost gotten him killed like 5 times??? So, the other day I had an epiphany about my absolute rage when it comes to maria and since i already live in a saltmine atm i figured, why not put it into words?

Disclaimer: If you like maria and don’t want to see her (or her writing) get criticized this isn’t a post for you, kindly move along

Let me preface this by saying that I’m usually not one to absolutely loath a character the way I loath maria. I dislike characters and what they do, sure, and maria did a lot of shit that one can dislike her for. But that bone deep rage I felt from a certain point on in season two (guess when lol) whenever I saw her on screen? I tried to remember the last time I felt that strongly for a character in a negative way and I came up with two examples: Gwen from Torchwood and Jace from shadowhunters.

Now I wondered, what do these three characters have in common that they let my blood boil like that?

And that’s when it hit me.

Lack of accountability from the writers room.

The writers kept trying to sell these characterd als flawless, like they can’t possibly be critisized by anyone on - or off screen and those who do are either in the wrong, jealous or flat out the bad guys (id critisism would happen at all).

They would walk all over other characters, ignore the laws within their own universe and they simply don’t face consequences for it on screen.

Gwen? Emotionally and physically cheats on her husband multiple times, disobeys direct orders from her superior officer left, right and center while acting like she’s better than everybody else on the team and still gets called “the heart of torchwood” and gets to act as team leader whenever jack is off doing jack-stuff even though she was the last one to join the team and no other character ever comments on any of those things.

Jace? Abandonds his family multiple times for a girl he met a hot second ago, tells his brother/best friend, that his best just isn’t good enough, constantly does whatever the hell he wants and only cares about himself and his girlfriend and yet gets hailed the saviour and nobody loses one (1) bad word about him except for simon at first (but, of course, that’s just because he’s jealous because clary likes jace).

And now Maria. Flushes a decades old friendship down the toilet for a man she knows her best friend has loved for over ten years, does so behind said best friends back after lying to his face by telling him she wouldn’t do that, rubs said “relationship” with the guy (who she never has anything nice to say about and wasn’t interested in until a minute ago btw) into her “best friends” face whenever the opportunity arises and manipulates said very gay “best friend” into a threesome with her and the love of his life while he was injured and traumatized to test her (at that point) part time shag to see if he liked her more than him. And yet no character ever comments on it. Nobody calls her out. Alex doesn’t even get to talk about his feelings, not with her, not with anyone. Or show them. Hell, not even in the privacy of his own home. 

But Julia, I hear you say, that could’ve happened off screen. 

I don’t care. 

Alex isn’t some extra that only appears once every two seasons. His character (and his fans) deserved the dignity of seeing him express his feelings. But oh no, can’t do that, because it would make it too obvious that Maria is a crappy person and a worse friend and we can’t have that now can we? 

There are a lot of reasons to dislike maria because she did so much shady shit, especially in season 2. But not having the writers adress any of it and act like Maria is a fucking saint definitely adds insult to injury and makes it so much worse than it already was.
