Is it just me, or was Hook the writers' favorite and Rumple their least favorite?
Because Rumple's character gets screwed over so many times, and every time it happens, who comes out looking more holy and heroic? If you said Hook, you'd be right.
What makes it even more annoying to me is that the show tries to present Hook and Emma's relationship as the best and healthiest (because it was the writers' favorite). However, instead of showing us reasons why it's healthy, they just make the other couples worse. For example, CaptainSwan got together in season 4 and that same year, Rumbelle was ruined and OutlawQueen was ruined because of Marian!
This isn't to say I hate Hook, because I don't. I wanted Hook and Rumple to be written well together.
(I also still ship CaptainSwan but still, this bugs me)

No one:
Me: You know who would have been better as Belle's infidelity partner than Will Scarlet? Jefferson.
Tumblr media
Before I begin, THIS IS NOT A BELLE HATE POST! Yes, I am going to address IT, but I am not putting her down for this...and I'll tell you why.
So after that god-freaking-awful twist in 4x11 when Belle sends Rumple over the town line, both he and Belle are left shattered at their dubious betrayals, the latter of which so much so she sought additional comfort (again, not hate, just hear me out).
That love interest ... for whatever reason ... was Will Scarlet, a cameo from Once Upon a Time's short-lived spin-off OUAT in Wonderland, which had ended a few months prior.
Tumblr media
I, along with a good chunk of the fanbase, thought it was a unique choice, and most likely a way to acknowledge the spin-off in canon.
Don't get me wrong, I like Will as a character in OUATIW, but he was just off to me in OUAT. Like he was just shoved in there without a real purpose. Even his scenes with Robin Hood felt forced to me.
And honestly, it seemed strange to me that Belle, the logical scholar and fruitful romantic, would break her wedding vows of all things even after what Rumple did.
BUT THEN AGAIN, I also don't think it's established how intensive wedding vows are in this universe. I mean, Snow technically cheated on David with Dr. Whale, and while it's addressed comedically, it's not really addressed as an issue in their marriage but they comfortably move on from none the less.
Of course, it's obviously just the show's weakest attempt at *drama* and a way to baffle the Rumbellers into stunned silence so they can focus on *other things* (I am NOT going THERE today.)
And I think I remember an article or something about Will's actor's Michael Socha, feeling underused and wanting out especially since he had a kid at home. While he has a few zingers between him and other characters like Rumple and Hook, he looks so awkward when he's on-screen with Belle, like even he doesn't know why he's there!
But for the sake of *drama* Belle needs some side yum. Cool. Girl's gotta work out her frustrations some way right? But WILL SCARLET?!
This Will Scarlet?
Tumblr media
"I love you Anastasia Tremaine" Will Scarlet?
Tumblr media
Who ripped his heart out because her betrayal was just too much?
Tumblr media
For freaking sake, they had a TLK!!!
Tumblr media
I will only, and I mean ONLY accept the following two theories as a reason why...this happened...
1. This takes place during Will and Anastasia's break.
It's established in the OUATIW that the events in the spinoff are happening sometime in either late-season 1 or early season 2's canon. I think. But maybe, just maybe, it was actually around season 4's timeline? The timeline is screwed to hell anyway so...
Ana's presence is established in OUAT after Will, who broke into the library and vandalized a copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, is arrested and held indefinitely. And while Will looks distraught at the mention of his former love, but he's not devastated enough
The scene subsequently serves as a pointless but sweet way to introduce Belle and Will. I myself wrote a fic few years back as a way to fill in how that played out afterwards. But the actual writers just kind of tossed it in there.
And dropped it.
Yeah, WIll just kind of disappeared after season 4. Thanks for stopping by, I guess.
And btw, you cannot convince me that a guy who reacts like this after watching the love of his life get killed in front of him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I kid you not, Will's screams and cries were stuck in my head after that episode. I gasped and covered my mouth. I remember feeling the same way when Graham died in OUAT because Emma's grief was just as raw as this. This is not the kind of grief you just up and move on with so casually. This sticks with you.
BACK TO JEFFERSON
Okay, I swear, I have a point.
Again, if Belle just *needed* a love interest during her break from Rumple, fine, but why not use the opportunity to do some freaking fan service after that Frozen mess?
Bring. Back. The. Hatter.
Why Jefferson?
He has an established relationship with Belle.
Tumblr media
Even if the ugly truth is Jefferson had to know Belle was being held captive in the hospital asylum, Belle would still, begrudgingly, be grateful he freed her and reunited her with Rumplestiltskin. Maybe he tried apologizing with coffee, and...things happen.
Plus he has an established relationship with Rumplestiltskin PRIOR to Belle.
No. You cannot tell me these two:
Tumblr media
...were just "business associates". No these two were hitting shroons in Wonderland every Tuesday at happy hour, do I make myself clear? It's obvious they weren't friends but they worked well together.
That scene in the shop would have been BANGER if Jefferson had been in Will's place. I mean the possibilities are endless with their establishment. They could have opened up an opportunity to explore more of Rumple's deals with Jefferson to find a way to the Land Without Magic, or even their shared connection with Regina, established, beloved connections in the series the audience would be comfortable with.
And honestly, I think Belle and Jefferson could have very nice chemistry too.
Their both worldly, and I can see these two sitting at a booth in Granny's forever as Jefferson told her her stories about his travels, maybe even a few tales about his deal and possible friendship with Rumplestiltskin. And maybe he helps her heal a bit.
That scene in 4x12 where Belle and Hook talk about Rumple really rubbed me the wrong way. What Rumple did to Belle and, yes, even Hook, was awful, but Hook never had to answer for his part in Rumple's decline. What did he think would happen if he threatened to blackmail him with Belle of all people?
Not to mention, Belle and Grace would have gotten along so well.
Tumblr media
At this point in the series, Grace is a young teenager, and could possibly use a female presence. She like Henry, would probably understand that her father needs more companionship and would support their relationship. And it would be great foreshadowing to Belle's own relationship with her child later on. And Belle LOVES kids and could have formed a very promising bond with Grace. Regardless on how her relationship with Jefferson could have ended, Belle would have this girl over for sleepovers every week.

Still to this day, I can't understand why the writers of OUAT and some fans believe that Belle got her happy ending. She deserved so much better. Also, continuing to be bitter about the fact that a such a toxic couple like Rumbelle got any kind of Carl and Ellie-parallels.

AND BELLE SENT HIM OVER THE TOWN LINE!
Tumblr media
It's such a well done, beautifully acted scene. It's so satisfying to see Belle finally take a stand and realise that she's worth more than this. Even if it hurts to make that stand

what’s ur opinion on Rumple? cuz imo he’s the worst and didn’t deserve any redemption at all.
Oh God. Rumple just really is a whole can of worms isn’t he? TLDR: No, I don’t believe he deserved redemption.
I think Rumple worked best as a sympathetic villain but one not intended to be redeemed. We could see why he did what he did, many an episode explained his reasonings and it was easy to see how he turned out as the horrible person he was. But it should’ve ended there. He’s out for himself, which made him not really on either side but willing to do anything to get what he wanted.
Rumple works best as a broken man suffering the consequences of his own actions, and thus I think he should’ve never gotten back with Belle, nor should he have been forgiven by Bae. Because how am I supposed to believe someone can change if they’re never taught their actions have permanent consequences?
He carries a sense of entitlement in the show, as a lot of the reformed characters do, that just because he said sorry he deserves to be treated well (like when he grovels at the town line begging for Belle to forgive him. Why should she do that exactly??). This sentiment is harboured by Belle too, who seems to have an almost abuse victim level of forgiveness and excuses for him. It’s slightly disturbing to watch out of an endgame pairing.
I, like many people, think he should’ve stayed dead in s3. The ultimate act showing that, while he may not be a good person, he has grown from his nasty habit of self preservation and learned that saving others at the cost of his life is the final way to show he feels genuine care towards those around him. He grows from his cowardice and fights bravely in the end, without magic, a good conclusion to his arc in my opinion.
When they brought him back, he became an abuser who didn’t care about anyone but himself, and was willing to do anything to keep his claws sunk into Belle - who didn’t even want to be with him.
They dug up his grave at the cost of his writing. Rumple was always a morally ambiguous, selfish person whose redemption arc didn’t seem like it would be like Regina’s. Watching it, I always assumed he’d have an arc like he did in 3a - a last minute remorse sort of thing. But that didn’t happen, what we got was a rehash of other redeemed villains held together with paper mache and a character so easily loathed that his constant flip flopping between redemption and evil became a meme. Utterly awful writing choice.

i've probably ranted about it a hundred times already...
but BUT the way regina stole belle's heart? the scenes don't make sense. the characters don't make sense.
i liked the rumple&will team up to steal belle's heart, but on belle's side, it's not making sense! regina asked belle for her heart, and yet she's clueless when it was returned? regina's not supposed to pull hearts and order people against their wills either! there was no need! she overstepped! and did i mention how it never got brought up again!?
the subplot ends with belle looking at rumple longingly, like she remembered that "oh! i love him." then follows the apparent breakup between belle and will. (oh, and his place in this show also doesn't make sense!)
ergo, this is my most hated plotline. above all the s5-s7 weirdness, this is one where i don't even consider it canon. there's always a better, alternate version of the situation in my head. my headcanon pieces this stupid stupid situation together.

(I am posting a lot today ik, it's mostly because I am bored out of my mind)
Isaac has got to be a self-insert, and I hate it, and everything that comes out of his stupid mouth.
My proof the writers hate Rumple:
“You are quite possibly the biggest pain in the ass I have ever had the displeasure of writing about”–The Author, to Rumple
(for me season 4 is the most unpleasant season to watch, not only are we stuck trailing round a walking commercial in the form of Elsa, but we are also watching a plot that is moving at a snails pace)

On the topic of Gold.
People really don't talk about how bad of a dad, granddad, and husband he was after he became the dark one.
I will not deny he was a good/decent dad to Baelfire before he became the dark one? But after?
The poor kid was terrified and ended up hating magic because of it, even into adulthood.
He traded away their second kid without discussing with Milah OR Belle when the two started dating.
He was all for murdering his grandson knowing the pain it would cause (because he lost a kid. He knew what it felt like and was willing to permanently injury/kill Henry. To permanently take away three people (HIS OWN SON'S) ten year old son and two people's own grandson (not including him in that since he clearly didn't care) before he found out Neal was dead.
He didn't respect Neal's wishes or Belle's.
He stole someone's baby during the hero and villains' thing.
He was gonna take ASHLEY'S baby and has been implied to have taken others, for purposes we do not know.
And he killed Milah TWICE. Like wtf.
And I don't see enough people talk about it?
People will seriously defend him to the grave not acknowledging any of this.
I don't get how. The man was willing to permanently take away multiple people's children (his 'true love's' and his own son's son included) despite knowing damn well how it felt.
And he doesn't show much remorse, does he?
I hate that retcon with the Charmings being baby snatchers but at least they showed remorse!
I don’t think much discussion happens around Gold at all because he was a minor character and not in the way of any major ships. Sad, isn’t it? Because the ship he is involved in was toxic as hell and deserves a lot of discussion!
Yes, I will agree that Rumple was a decent father before becoming the dark one. Rumple, however, was never a descent husband. To be fair, Milah wasn’t a decent wife either. Her anger over her husband being unable to kill someone when she, herself, wasn’t willing to do it, is just … wrong. But Rumple trading his second born without telling Milah (and later not disclosing this to Belle) was an asshole, cowardly, move. Does that make him a rotten father though? He was doing everything he could for his son. I do believe branding himself a coward was selfish and did his family wrong by dishonoring them.
However, blaming Rumple for his actions after being consumed by darkness is a tricky thing. I don’t fully blame Rumple because he was literally just consumed by darkness. He wasn’t even aware at the time what he was doing even though anger, cowardice and indignation led him to this fate… he was still consumed by a literal evil force. I begin to blame Rumple for his actions as the Dark One around the time he let his son fall through a portal. He was struggling there for control and he lost it. It’s like when Killian chose Emma above his power and over his own life. Rumple was just weaker.
The Rumple stans 100% do not acknowledge that Rumple’s love for Henry was very much contingent on his own happy ending. If Neal hadn’t been dead, Henry would be dead. If it had come down between Henry and Belle, he wouldn’t have hesitated to kill Henry. Rumple was very selfish.
And that selfishness showed in how he controlled Belle’s life. He never asked her before he did anything. He put her in a sleeping curse so he could get what he wanted in S4 during the shattered sight curse. He went against her wishes to wake her in S5. And again in S6 he locked her on his ship, tried to force her to give him their child and then didn’t ask her in S6 finale if she wanted to participate in his mother’s curse! Her life was basically a chess piece for him to maneuver around to gain his own happiness.
Rumple also got away with killing Milah twice. And I always forget: HELP ME OUT HERE… does Belle know that Rumple killed Milah or does she still think it’s Killian’s fault? Because that was always a WTF for me. I am pretty sure Rumple lets her think he isn’t a wife killer when he is.
And no, Rumple has zero remorse. After all “it is the man he is.”
I also hate the Charming baby snatching retcon but to be fair they didn’t know it was a human child. So in no way are they even on the same plane of evil as Regina or Rumple. But yes, they are the only ones to show remorse for harming a child. Well, Killian too. He regrets leaving Bae to Pan after being offended by Bae’s rejection.
P.S. The baby he stole during the AU was baby Snowflake aka Snowing’s child.

Things I can’t believe I had to read with my ownest eyes in the BELLE FRENCH TAG in the year of our lord 2023:
“Milah was trapped by Rumple’s manipulations.”
Milah “how lazy that you’re enjoying taking care of our son while I do ALL the work around here (actually does not seem to do any of the work to support the family OR to care for the kid)” was trapped by Rumple’s manipulations.
MILAH “go kill this guy while I get drunk in this tavern because I say it’s the only way to save our son and maybe I’ll give you some sugar for the first time in five years” was trapped by RUMPLE’s manipulations.
MILAH “if you don’t want me getting drunk, gambling away our money, ignoring our recently almost dead kid, and, incidentally, making public fun of you with the guy I’m cuckolding you with, all you have to do is drop any hard-won security in your life and follow me anywhere I like no matter what danger it puts us or the kid in” was TRAPPED by RUMPLE’s manipulations.
MILAH “oopsie, I was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by pirates and it’s all because of you!” WAS TRAPPED BY RUMPLE’s MANIPULATIONS.
