XIII: worst book you’ve read?

oof that's hard because I'm usually quick to drop something if it's bad and then forget about it. Maybe something from the school days? Maybe W pustyni i w puszczy (eng. In desert and wilderness?) by henryk sienkiewicz, I couldn't get past 15 pages lmao but I knew the movie very well so I passed with that and the summary xd Ohh wait there were some danmei series I dropped or barely finished, e.g. counterfeit bride (AWFUL) and nurturing the hero to avoid death (idk maybe it gets better after I dropped it at ch22 but I just couldn't continue)

edit: OH WAIT I REMEMBERED ONE BOOK I LITERALLY THREW AWAY AFTER READING A FEW PAGES. So I like to learn about weird science stuff, there was once a tv show that I loved and it talked about freaky experiments in the past, e.g. how someone tried to weigh a human soul. So I saw a book called something along the lines "the dark side of science", briefly read the back, and thought Oh Nice it's gonna talk about freaky science of the past and debunked beliefs, cool! Then it turned out it was some conspiracy shit like Everyone Is Lying To You! Aliens have been among us since ancient times! Dinosaurs never existed! The earth is flat! I (the author) am the only one who knows the truth while the whole world is being manipulated! Be thankful for my grace of teaching you The Truth!

thanks to @rainsfalling mentioning how there should be a wkx cat story once and @antique-forvalaka introducing me to the name ‘mao wen’ for cat!wkx, i wrote this a while ago and now i’m realizing i don’t actually have anything else in mind for it, so i’m just yeeting this onto tumblr for yall’s enjoyment. (i can’t seem to tag either of you i’m so sorry :(((( )

“Lao Wen?” Zhou Zishu says, blinking. He went to sleep with Wen Kexing curled around him. He has woken up to a much colder bed, because the only other inhabitant is a cat. It feels like the height of foolishness to address the cat like this, but… he recognizes that look.

The cat makes a little noise, sits up taller, and pats his face with its paw. Zhou Zishu winces a little. A paw is not dextrous in the same way as a hand.

“Are you… This is ridiculous.” He’s talking to a cat. What the fuck.

The cat rolls its eyes at him.

Zhou Zishu begins to sit up. Immediately, the cat hisses. “What?” Zhou Zishu hisses back.

With a very clear and deliberate look at the window, dark and cold since it’s still the middle of the night, the cat reaches over and pushes his shoulder back down.

“You want me to go back to sleep?” He can’t help the amusement in his voice.

Once again, the cat makes a noise. This one sounds declarative. This is, unfortunately, going a long way towards convincing him that it actually is Wen Kexing, wild as that seems.

“Alright, well, I’m not complaining,” Zhou Zishu says, lying back down. He’s too tired to roll over, so his face is planted into the pillow.

There’s another sound from the cat. Pleased, maybe? And then—

“Ouch!” Zhou Zishu hisses. 

The cat has walked onto his back. It hisses back at him this time and gives him a soft whack with its paw. Stay down, he interprets.

“I’m staying, you bully.” But his irritation doesn’t last long. The cat gives a satisfied huff and then curls up on his back. No, Zhou Zishu realizes, not just his back. Directly over his shoulderblades. He can’t help but laugh at that.

“Alright, Lao Wen. I’ll see you in the morning.”

okay so like, pretty much all my art is someone else's fault. i stand by this. this is the fault of @antique-forvalaka (henceforth siv). blame or thank her. she just showed up unprovoked and was like, "fem!wkx has a flat ass and fem!zzs is big tiddy tomboy," and i was like, "umm???" what was i meant to do? NOT draw them? it's a modern au because i don't fuck with drawing hanfu.

most of these were drawn when i was too sick to write and lemme tell you i 100% underestimated the effect of a cough on drawing art. the lineart on wkx's piece took me so fucking long. i even had to go back in and redo bits of it. that's why some of it looks wonky but shhhh don't look.

this was the first one i started drawing, and then i nearly gave up because zzh's face is the fucking worst to draw. like, i even tried tracing a still and it still didn't look like him. okay, thots:

f!zzs has long hair that she takes relatively good care of but she pretty much always just ties up and ignores

she keeps it long because she sometimes does infiltration missions and it's helpful to appear super feminine

she knows how to be pretty and well presented but she literally never gives a shit

left alone she will happily sit in a sports bra and panties and eat ramen

oh yeah when she's lying low after leaving tc she disguises herself as a male vagabond. @luckydragon10 is very attached to f!zzs's fake stubble.

the hoodie look is an adaptation of my favourite zzs look from woh which is the meili look. look i am a simple woman, put the characters in a veiled hat and my brain just goes hrrrrnnnnng.

oh hello other actor in this drama who is incredibly fucking hard to draw. luckily i had already drawn modern wkx before so i was a bit more used to his face. okay, some more thots:

the first one i drew was the big profile which is labelled in the csp file as tiddies out wkx

in my head f!wkx has a flat ass and flat chest bc siv said so, but she wishes she were curvy like wkx

she's very much styled after a femme fatale, emphasis on the fatal

she's pretty much always immaculately turned out, perfect make-up, perfect clothes, all very expensive

i had to draw her in stockings and garter belt. i just had to. also that lace texture killed me and took me like half of wanda//vision (which i was watching in the background) to get right

part of the reason i even did modern au was because i wanted to draw wkx with a sniper rifle

on that note the sniper rifle is traced from a photo bc i am lazy and at that point was very ill

"oh? so you have chosen death~♡" -- that's her vibe

fave wkx is angery wkx up in the top right corner. i drew her last.

one big regret that i didn't draw her splattered in blood and smirking like lelouch from code geass. i just think that would be neat.

this was the last set of these that i drew and i had to think long and hard about what to do for her. i knew i wanted her to be shorter than zzs but curvier than wkx but that was literally it

originally when i started drawing f!hy i gave her short curly hair, like close to a pixie cut, but i couldn't make it look right, so i went back to siv and extracted her suggestion of a side cut or undercut

in my head, hy and zzs run two-man missions all the time, with zzs as front woman and hy as tactical support/getaway driver

siv said to me that she sees wkx playing dress-up with hy bc hy is more receptive to it than zzs and i was like oh yes so that's why there's a little classy hy over on the right

also the more i drew f!hy with her little undercut and sweats i realised she looked like a fuckboi and i was here for it

special shout out to my favourite tac gear item: the throat mic. they're just so sexy. don't come at me.

shout out to fancy dress ass-kicking hy. the backstory here is that wkx put her in a pretty dress for a nice evening out only for it to devolve into a battlefield so hy takes off her heels and just starts blasting.

oh yeah special shout out here bc my brain was just like "play with the colours" so i did and now there is no consistent colouring for this set.

anyway i love hy's little button nose. so cute. love drawing it.

leave a light in the window (sw, 32k, padmé-centric gen, may 2021): this was a little ambitious for me at the time, and i went in sooo not knowing what i wanted to do with the premise that i discarded 17k and went a totally different direction. i think there's ways it's clumsy, but i also think i managed a fair amount of what i wanted to do with it, and the fact that i wrote it all before posting meant i got to figure out what structure i wanted (chapter v the storm is my favorite in that respect). my niche gen baby <3

trembling on the branch, unfurl your petals and grow (word of honor, 47k, wenzhou, oct 2021-april 2022): this was my first fic in this fandom and the first long work i finished while posting it as a wip. (i have a horrendous record of starting multi-chapters and not finishing them). i'm also just really fond of it; it was so fun to work in chengling's pov, and get to give some gentle endings, and play with my cast of minor characters and ocs. it's also really mixed in with my experience of/feelings while making friends in this fandom!

calling us home across the open yards (word of honor, 6k, wenzhou (but mostly about zzs & jiuxiao and zzs & chengling, july 2022): did the world need a modern us au of them from me? debatable. but this is here bc this au has become kind of an ongoing story to think about & talk about with @deepestbluesky, thinking about their lives and relationships many years down the line. like i like this fic but also it's the tip of an iceberg.

Millions of Suns Left (word of honor, 14k, wenzhou, oct 2022): tbh i just really think i managed this one. ship fic is still an ongoing struggle but i think i did it well here, and this kind of au is sooooo my happy place but for once i didn't let it carry me away too much to just be satisfied with the one story. (i mean i do have sequels i want, but i think this story stands alone really well). idk it's a good fic.

strange thing found (word of honor, 19k, wenzhou, dec 2022): frankly beyond this being a banger it's here bc writing it was so much FUN. sky is obviously my co-conspirator with a lot shl these days but writing a fic together was great, and i think it's stronger for being both of us together. also, i have lost it about how cute bats are so many times bc of this (ostensibly) monster fic.
