i'm ranting about descendants again and this is a long one

Alright, I talked a little bit about this on twitter literally yesterday (https://x.com/amethxxt/status/1798768561613361458) but I wanted to do it here too, so here we are!!

I think everyone has seen these pictures by now. It's from Descendants new book "The World of Auradon: Royals & Villains".

Now, at first, I got really excited (in a way, I still am) because it'll probably give me more material to use in my fics. Also, Uma looks absolutely stunning, so I immediately began reading her page and... Well, it's not the nicest things, right?

Like I said on twitter, I can't be the only one who sees the majorly different ways they talk about Uma and Mal.

With Mal, they start saying she's a "confident natural leader", and like- no, she's not, far from it.

I think the best version we got from Mal was on D1. She was such a good character and that's when I think the writers succeded the most with her - I believe it was hard to find someone who actively disliked or simply hated her.

When D2 came out, things went slightly downhill. Mal's inner conflict of not being the picture perfect Lady of the Court and feeling that the odd one out because she wasn't doing well in Auradon when compared to her friends is very realistic.

The pressure that she was feeling to be perfect and all the new things that came with being the King's girlfriend makes you understand why she was so anxious and wanted to leave. Now, I think we should all understand that this makes Mal a very insecure person.

She's insecure, she's flawed and runs away the first chance she gets because everything becomes too much. And if they wrote her like that, how is she a confident natural leader?

When the Core Four and Ben go after her, it's when things begin to change. Mal has a few moments in this movie: running away and leaving just a note to her best friend, claiming Dizzy was going to be fine when Evie felt sorry about leaving a child in the abusive place they all grew up in, betraying Uma's trust. Yeah.

I'm gonna make it very clear that I really like Mal as a character. I criticize her a lot because the writers started putting her in a pedestal, overpowering her and trying to erase anything that could be seen as bad.

Why would they have Mal apologize for using a love spell on Ben when they make such a cute couple and would be endgame anyways?

It gets worse in D3. I remember watching them announce that Hades was Mal's father and being like "No fucking way" because you want this girl to be not only half-fairy but a half-god?? Was this the only way to have his ember in the story?

Well, I think we got used to that plot after a while, but then - Oh, Mal's also Lady of the Court, she'll be a part of the decisions that concern the Isle of the Lost and a voice for the other VKs.

Yes, Mal is "a confident natural leader" who turns her back on her people and comes up to the idea of closing the Barrier for good to protect Auradon citizens.

Why do they refuse to bring up the fact that it was her idea?? Nevermind the fact that her and Ben weren't married yet, she was not the Queen and had absolutely no power to make that decision. They make Ben so useless, a King with no voice because he's not the main character, right?

So she makes a decision that's not up to her and proceeds to lie to all of her friends, makes empty promisses to both Celia and Uma, and when shit hits the fan, nothing happens.

Having Evie confront her about it is one of my favorite scenes, but what are the consequences? I understand that it was the final movie, but it's so rushed that makes everyone else feel out of character.

Mal and Evie can be the best of friends, but you can't tell me Mal would be like "I was wrong, I have to be a voice for everyone and I shouldn't have lied" and Evie would be just "Ok, perf".

And what about the opposite? When Mal betrays Uma for probably the third time, Uma has no trouble forgiving her? Of course they don't mention what happens in the books, they don't mention Mal trying to hurt Evie (or even get her killed lol) and they don't mention the "shrimpy" incident with Uma.

They don't talk about Mal's wrong doings the same way they talk about Uma.

Uma, according to the new book, is a "confident and resourceful VK with a major mean streak". Sorry, Uma has a mean streak? I don't think so. What Disney and Descendants keep doing is use the definition of a villain for a character who's an antagonist.

Villains have malicious intentions, they are evil. You're gonna tell me the girl who simply wants for all the children to get off the Isle, a place they were forced to live in along with murderers and other criminals, some of those who happened to be their parents, all while surviving off of the garbage that came from Auradon, is the evil one?

That is not to say Uma doesn't make mistakes or does bad things. Mal and Uma have the common point of using a love spell on Ben, which is awful and should be acknowledged as that, but they only do it in Uma's case.

"When Mal and her friends successfully freed Ben, Uma took it one step further by putting Ben under a magic love spell" x "She [Mal] used spells to mess with other students, to convince Ben that he loved her, and to change herself in order to fit in as Ben's girlfriend. But once she realized she needed to ditch the spell book and learn to survive without magic, she was able to become the queen she was always meant to be"

Those... are not the same to me. They detail every thing Uma does during D2, making it clear that using a love spell was worse than the previous actions of kidnapping him, but with Mal it almost feels like they excuse her actions because, eventually, she learned that magic wasn't the way to become who she was meant to be.

Also, what do you mean Mal felt guilty about the other VKs who were left behind? Mal didn't even look sad when her and Evie were leaving Dizzy behind! Evie was the one to come up with the idea to bring more children to Auradon, and when that magically turned into the VK Day (my arch-nemesis plotline along with Merlin Academy), she didn't look worried at all that it would them so long to free all the kids if they were going to pick 4 each time.

And again, her idea to close the Barrier for good (with no way in or out) would mean that eventually, everyone left in the Isle would die. I know it's Disney, and they would never make that happen, but if you're not going in to even leave your trash there (aka their food source), yeah, they're all dying.

Now, with Uma, they point out how she wanted to escape and get revenge on Mal, but like...... not really? Of course she mentions in D2 how she wants Mal's new turf and tries to make a deal with her to leave with her crew, but when she's actually free and we get into D3, it's been months (I think) and while Auradon's scared she's going to do something, we find out Uma spent all that time looking for a hole in the Barrier to get the kids out.

When she makes another deal to help Mal, all she asks for is the guarantee that every kid who wants to leave the Isle is able to do so. Who breaks that promise? The "villain" with the major mean streak or the confident natural leader?

I'm not saying that Mal is real villain, because she's really not. But she's far from how they describe her and if you're gonna tell me she's a natural leader, I better not see her bringing down the Barrier, letting both the kids and villains out, and acting like it's the right thing to do.

VK Day wasn't the answer to free the innocents, but bringing down the Barrier isn't it either! Mal doesn't "help convice Auradon citizens to accept all VKs into Auradon Prep" she just decides to do that lol

And again, that decision is not up to her, she had no legal right to do it. She was just Lady of the Court and nothing else.

Like I said on twitter, Disney and Descendants like Uma because she's a fan favorite, she was one since they announced her as a character. But they insist on the idea that Auradon changed her for the better, as if she was never someone who fought for what was right. She's not perfect either, but they can't write about her in a way that makes her look better than Mal.

How did Mal stop her at the end of D2? Mal didn't do anything, they were fighting, Ben made a speech, Uma turned around and left. That was it.

How did Auradon transform her? Of course they are implying that because of Rise of Red and her becoming the new principal, and even though this plot still kinda confuses me, it still seems like all the wants is for Auradon to be a fair place that doesn't discriminate against anyone.

I now this is getting too long, but I really like ranting about descendants. It's my comfort franchise but there's so many things wrong with it lol

And I also know I'm probably looking too deep into it, but I don't think I'm the only one who sees the ways Disney has always treated Uma and Mal differently.

I want to get this book and see if there's anything else about them. I really wished Disney and Descendants treated Uma better, though.

Okay fuck it here we go it's been one minute. Pack Leader Rex AU time.

First off, it is not an AU where Rex is evil. It's more of a...I guess placement swap? Between VK and Rex. In this AU, VK was found and captured by Providence a year ago to study his nanite absorbing powers, and Rex started befriending and collecting EVO pals until they eventually formed the Pack, and found Abysus to be a place Providence would not enter.

So in this universe, Rex, Bobo (yes unfortunately he's there but he's MY version bc I refuse to look at him in canon), Biowulf, Breach and Skalamander are the original Pack members, people Rex picked up like he picked up the Hong Kong crew before. The fic idea does also start with them picking up Circe - so she remains as someone new to the Pack, trying to figure out her place. The Abysus castle becomes a safe house for all the EVOs they've picked up over the years - an actual community of incurables, with those that they can cure being returned via Breach portal to their families.

That's the general setup - really just, a swap. What makes the AU so exciting for me though is the character dynamic, I'm a sucker for Found Families with Barriers.

First off, Six and Holiday still work for Providence. They both still believe in a cure, and when Providence discovers this EVO that can cure people and is also seemingly amassing an army, they try to get their mitts on him and stop this threat in its track. Six ends up being the first Providence agent to make contact with Rex - and the first agent to realize this is a child they're dealing with, not a monster. Holiday knew this, already - but they have to work on figuring out ways to help out Rex and look out for this kid without jeapordizing their jobs. Six can't abandon White, and Holiday can't abandon Beverly. They're stuck having to earn Rex's trust (granted, not that difficult compared to earning the trust of other Pack members). White is in charge of Providence still (idk how his ass got bleached yet), and instead of blaming Rex for his divorce and seeing the kid as a threat bc of the giant robot bullshit, he sees him as a threat for the potential army bullshit. Ironically he's the one that treats Rex the most like an adult, because he assumes malice from the kid for a long time.

On the flip side, the Pack is very close. They're actually friends, unlike canon. Breach and Rex and Circe hang out a lot, Circe and Rex don't have the initially antagonistic part of their relationship, but Circe still thinks Rex is stupid for trusting people so easily. Breach and Rex just kind of play Minecraft in her pocket dimension sometimes and have talks, and Skalamander,,,,doesn't have a whole lot of stuff to work with in canon so I'm still figuring him out. But Biowulf is the closest thing to a "parent" of the Pack, and he's bad at it. More of an anxious dog that still refers to Rex as Master (as much as Rex hates it, tries to tell him not to), still worships the kid to a degree while Rex is constantly trying to get Biowulf to just. Chill out. Tell him about his worries and talk things out.

There's definitely also an arc in mind where Providence does capture Rex and Holiday and Six have to struggle to protect him the best they can while White tries to bargain with the kid and the Pack freaks out and tries to figure out how to break him out.

what even is there to say here. tiktok is a bad app. it combines all the worst bits of facebook and twitter. it's intentionally designed to keep you on the app and rot your brain. i don't have a tiktok account for this reason. the chinese government uses its control over it to censor parts of their history they don't like

yet.

i remember reading on here about the so-called "open internet" that was with the analysis that while it was "open" in the abstract this internet was basically just an extension of the american empire. (every social media app is american. this comes with assumptions about what is allowed and what norms are possible there that are obvious if you think about all the policies and how they work in different countries. they have to be american by virtue of needing one global policy for the whole world and the whole team meaningfully being in the united states)

of course, countries wouldn't stand for it! after the tv and radio first being breeding grounds for exporting american culture through the world different states developed different ways of resisting it. some banned american social media completely to allow their own tech industry to flourish. some had a natural language barrier. in either case it's been imperfect: some of them end up on twitter and american social media anyways. europe, of course, lacking any consumer tech industry or desire to ever start one just came with us and conceded all of tech to the us.

we all liked brushing these methods of enacting types of social media that were extensions of your state instead of such silly illiberal ideas, ideas that were used because their states couldn't handle free speech and freedom (with american characteristics). after all, what state would get anxious of their people speaking up (on a platform owned and operated by an american company).

even then, we don't censor their silly censored social media. after all, you can still go on vk and weibo from america. we're different! we're the freest nation in the world. the greatest nation on earth. our social media and internet is truly free and open, they said, with every social media app in actual use owned and operated in the good ol us of a.

and when this actually gets tested? when a company in a country we're not friendly with thinks that they should expand into the us market?

I'm sorry for that, but I've been feeling sad and anxious for a few days now. I am almost physically uncomfortable from this and I am constantly on the verge of not crying. Everything falls out of my hands, I can't concentrate on anything properly.

It all started on Friday evening. I was in a great mood, but I was a little tired after a week of worries about the certification. I returned home and was just flipping through social networks, when I suddenly came across a group in which they post drawings on the games of the World of Darkness. I still dream of coming across my work there, because my friend has already been published there several times. But I realized that my works had never been there and I felt very sad. I've been crying all evening. As soon as I calmed down, everything started all over again. To calm down a little, I wrote a post to my VK group. I quickly realized that I didn't just want to see my work published there (and it's not that important for me to be there), it's important for me that someone noticed my work and offered it to some group. That's what I wrote in the post. However, this did not help, but only made it worse. A friend wrote that his work was found and published there even though she didn't use hashtags. It completely broke me. I hoped that at least in the morning I would feel better, but I walked all day as if in a fog. And I really wanted to cry. I realized that I didn't even want my drawings to be posted somewhere, I wanted a simple recognition of my characters, a simple "You have cool characters, I like them, tell me about them." It's good that there was a painting attestation, and I was surrounded by good people. It got a little better in the evening, especially when I saw my parents.

This morning everything was fine and quite joyful. But then sadness swallowed me up again. I'm afraid to talk about how bad I feel to my family and especially friends, because they are already tired of my tears. It will only be annoying. I can't even tell my parents, because after I tell them, I will definitely feel stupid, and my problems will seem so insignificant (like myself).

I just don't understand why that is. Why, when everything was so good, when I was so productive and joyful, then I fell into this pit. A pit of self-loathing and some kind of childish resentment. I just want to know that I'm interesting, that my characters are interesting, that I'm doing something decent, and not just sitting in a dark empty room playing with my boring toys.

Kaname not being able to overcome the death of hooded woman despite Yuki being with him doesn't it mean that he cared about the hooded woman a lot and also the fact that he wasn't receiving anything in this relationship , even now he questions himself, why did he leave her behind if he loved her as much as everyone else was saying , doesn't it mean he didn't love her as much as he claimed ?

Hmmm, I didn't remember Kaname being unable to overcome the death of the hooded woman? If you're talking about his flashback, rather than his memory about THW herself, I think it was more of a memory of about his own journey to live together with human. THW was just coincidentally a part of that.

If you ask why I have this conclusion: it was because he never included the memory about only about two of them together, but always about the two of them together in his attempt to live harmoniously with human. As in, we didn't see whatever it is they're doing together besides helping human. (Did they laugh together, cook together? Perhaps they did. But, we never see these because he didn't seem to care, unless the activity align with his goal)

But he did care for her though, just not romantically. Also, it's because he told Yuki she's free to change his name if she wished to. He has moved on from that era and took important lesson with him: he didn't want to feel self-reproach anymore and he didn't want to be alone. Which motivated him to sacrifice his heart for Yuki later.

Is this about Yuki or THW?

If this is about THW, again, I didn't recall him saying this. Maybe you could provide me which chapters and page?

If this is about Yuki, he wouldn't understand his own decision until he got his painful memory back. Like it or not, his life with THW has shaped him to become anxious of others' death. Nobody, I repeat, nobody wants to leave their loved one behind and unalive themselves. But traumatic experiences can change people and distort ideals. Sadly, this happens in reality too.

Spelled (Carlos de Vil x Sanderson Daughter) Descendants 2- Ch. 8: On The Wrong Side?

It’s getting dark out, so Mal should be here soon. Good thing too, because I’m starting to get tired of playing go fish with Harry and Gil.

“Got any 7s?”

“Go fish, Harry!”

“That’s a lie, you scallywag!” Hook gets in Gil’s face.

“No it isn’t!”

I groan impatiently. “Guys, please. Harry, play nice. Gil, your poker face is that of a 2-year-old. Ugghhhh… When is Mal gonna get here?!”

Uma ignores my outburst and hastily throws a food tray in front of a customer.

“Hey! I wanted the fried clams!” The sea hag complains.

“And I wanted a sea pony. Life ain’t fair!” Uma barks back.

Just then, my wait is up when the bar doors swing open and Mal waltzes in.

“I’m baack,” Mal drawls.

Uma smirks. “Loser, party of one. Right this way, please. Sparky, you can take a seat in the kitchen.”

“But I-!”

Uma glares daggers. “Do you want me to call mommy?”

My face freezes. “N-no.”

Mal frowns. “Magica, what’s she talking about-?”

“That’s between me, and sparky. Now go!” Uma points to the kitchen door.

My arms slump and I slowly trudge back to the kitchen like a child being scolded. My smug look doesn’t budge when Gil and Harry burst in. 

“Aw don’t look so sour, Magica. Once Uma’s done with Mal you can go, but we’re really gonna miss you. You don’t hate us that much, do you?”

I must admit, his sad innocence is starting to grow on me. “I don’t hate you guys, it’s just I’m not keen on being ordered to just sit back here. I’m not a dumb blonde, why should I be treated like one?”

“Nah it’s not like that, lass. This business Uma’s got with Mal is personal. Just watch the show.”

“Doesn’t she have the perfect little life?” I hear Uma jab at Mal.

I shake my head slowly, staring at the wall. “No, she doesn’t.”

“Excuse me?” Harry asks behind me. “Mal is the perfect, pretty princess that betrayed all the VKs. Don’t tell me her life’s not perfect.”

“Mal’s having just as hard a time coping with the Auradon lifestyle as I am. When people expect too much it eats away any self-control politeness you’ve got left, then you just let go and it all goes down the drain.”

“You guys want anything?” Gil yells from the fridge.

“Shh! I’m trying to watch!” Hook hisses and looks out the kitchen window. I join him and find Uma and Mal caught in an arm wrestling competition. 

“Really? That’s how they fight? Seems a bit less intense than I pictured.”

“Tell me about it,” Harry rolls his eyes. “But she’s the captain, so what she says goes.”

“That whole princess act? Ugh.” Uma rolls her eyes. “Never bought it for a second. You can slap a tiara on a villain, but you’re still a villain.”

Ouch. Uma basically just summed up the battle I’ve been fighting my whole life.

They go back and forth, glaring and snarling as it looks like Mal’s winning with glowing green eyes. Is using magic cheating? But when Uma lets it slip that she wants the wand, Mal blanks out for a split second and allows Uma to pin her arm to the table.

“I win!” Uma does a victory dance. “Now you’ve gotta deliver the wand!”

Mal’s face drops when she realizes her defeat. “And then you’ll let Ben go?”

“Sure will, but you try any double-cross and he’s sharkbait. Got it?”

Mal nods and looks over to where I’m watching. When she sees I’m with Harry and Gil her face shows confusion and subtle anger. She doesn’t even try to talk before storming out the doors. Once she’s gone Uma skips over with a giddy smile.

“That went well,” Hook smirks.

“All too well, maties. Sparky!” Uma jerks her head at the doors. “You’re free to go. But keep in mind: I’ll be watching you. Remember our little pep talk.”

My first reaction is an anxious smile and a start to the exit, but then I remember to look back and give the Sea Three a wave goodbye.

“Bye, Magica! Come visit soon!” Gil calls.

“I shalt never forget thy advice, my new companions. Farewell.”

After pulling my hat over my face I slip out into the dark streets. By now it’s calmed down, providing me with an opportune way back to Mal’s apartment. When I get there, I find Jay and Carlos rushing down the stairs.

“Hey guys, I’m back! What’s the rush-?”

“We’re going back to get the wand!” Jay says in a huff. “Keep up!”

My mind panics as I start to race after them. “Wand? You’re actually gonna give Uma the wand?!”

“Not the real one- a fake one!” We get to the limo and Carlos opens the limo door for me. “We’re gonna use the 3D printer!”

Once Jay rips the tarp off he jumps into the driver’s seat and starts the engine. “Let’s go!”

He takes off just as Carlos hops in, sending us crashing onto the limo floor in a tangled mess.

“Oh! Um- sorry,” Carlos stutters as we try to get up. He grabs my hand to help me up and I feel my pulse quicken. Just then I sense my empathy link spark awake- Carlos is feeling… scared? “Whoa- are you ok? Your eyes are glowing.”

My eyes…? We must be getting closer to the barrier’s edge. Once we cross, I can feel my magic recharging.

“Ah, it’s good to be back!” I celebrate by sending purple sparks dancing around the car. “Sorry for the scare, Freckles.”

“Um, it’s ok. We… Mal told us that she saw you with Uma’s crew. What’s that all about?”

I wave my hand. “Oh, you know. Casual kidnapping, slight threatening, small pep talk, the usual. Why? It’s not like I’m completely helpless.”

Carlos looks over at Jay up front and they both share an uneasy expression.

“Not that, it’s just… You know Uma can’t be trusted at all, right? And she just let you go, no strings attached?”

Oh. Right. They hate each other. Should I tell them about her offer to join her crew? I mean, they haven’t exactly expressed the same amount of forethought as Uma did. Do I still trust them? My heart wants to scream yes, but my brain keeps scolding me to stay cautious.

“She’s… complicated. Yes Uma is on the bad side, but so were you guys at one point. She just feels downplayed because she wasn’t chosen to go to Auradon.”

“She’s a cunning, evil sea witch just like her mom!” Jay argues. “Trust us, trixie. You don’t wanna get tangled up with her.”

Hm. For now it’s best to do as I always do and keep my mouth shut. Agree to disagree. But their biased concern still won’t make up for the Sea Three’s compassion.

Evie agere headcanons

Regresses to around 5-6 years old 

Voluntary regressor. She has a pretty strict regression schedule for herself. Back on the isle Evie figured out the times that her mother was away/completely occupied every week and used that time to regress. Even after coming to Auradon she maintained her schedule 

She spent a lot of time alone and so knows herself pretty well. She has a very good sense of how often she needs to regress and generally knows what tends to put her into/bring her out of her headspace

Back on the Isle she knew her regression was something her mother wouldn’t approve of but there were lots of things like that so it didn’t deter her. She just knew she had to keep it hidden. 

Since she was castle schooled for so long and lived in isolation she didn’t develop the same need to hide her emotions as the others did so she tends to be more expressive 

She likes to make up stories and explain things from her picture books to people 

Evie  is very independent and struggles a bit to let others take care of her. She is very polite and can be a bit anxious. Not in the way carlos is anxious but in a “pleasure to have in clase” kind of way where expends a lot of her energy to make sure she does everything right so no one gets mad at her and she isn’t a bother 

Sleeping makes her a little nervous so she pretty much never naps. Her mom told too many stories of princesses being cursed into a death-like sleep that they never woke up from and they stuck with her 

Evie as a person enjoys being swept off her feet little or not, and Jay and Mal will often scoop her up just to hear her laugh 

She loves to play pretend! Especially tea party games and games where she gets to dress up 

Evie also loves to read or, if the book in question is a little bit too difficult for her while she's little, be read to. 

Evie really loves any food that is prepared to make it look fancy. Tiny sandwiches with the crust cut off and a little toothpick holding it, or fruit that's been cut up nicely, or tiny desserts make her very excited. The other VKs all work very hard to make her food she likes since she tends to have some problems eating while big due to lingering insecurity about her weight. Ben makes it a point to bring her something special from the palace kitchens if he is visiting 

Evie has very good manners that were instilled in her from a young age. She used to get in a lot of trouble for messing them up when she was a kid so now she really sticks to them even though her mother is no longer around 

Evie, as everyone expected, loves dolls and has amassed a big collection. She loves dressing them up and doing their hair and most importantly giving them fulfilling lives where they don’t have to be pretty and are more than just their looks. It’s very therapeutic for her. 

In a somewhat awkward attempt to help take care of Evie and show her love as a friend Mal once brought her a doll she had found while on the isle. It was dirty and the porcelain face had cracked. Some of its hair was missing along with an entire hand. It was old and chipped and looked so far from perfect. Evie fell in love with it. She spent hours tenderly restoring the doll. She cleaned it and made a prosthetic hand out of clay. She designed her pretty clothes and redid some of her paint and styled her hair to cover the bald places. The doll helps remind her that things can and do have value even when they aren’t perfect 

Evie designed herself an entire wardrobe change for when she’s regressed and loves getting dressed in her new outfit choice immediately when she starts to slip. Having clothes that are only for little time helps her regress 

She has some pacifiers that she impulse bought and some she made because they looked pretty but while regressed she never ends up using them 

She came out about her regression in an attempt to make Carlos feel less nervous after he admitted his. Ben is around enough that he has also learned about her regression. A few days after the coronation she also told Doug who was very supportive and respected her wishes for him to not be around while she was regressed. She felt weird about the guy she wanted to date taking care of her while she was little. 

The VK’s do a great job taking care of her. She never had a real desire for a caregiver since she was always able to take care of herself so well but letting other people watch over her has been really nice 

When talking about letting the others take care of her while regressed she requested no nicknames that had to do with her beauty. She wanted to try and avoid feeling like her worth was in her looks while little the way she felt growing up. Because of this her friends usually call her difference talents she has like seamstress, smartiepants, mathwiz, etc

so, i got to thinking about my life + the headcanons i have about the vk family. i have one i'd like to share with you (safe)

let me preface this by saying that i'm not physically disabled, but i have had issues with my legs for as long as i've been able to walk (so basically my entire life) which has led me to limp when i walk. more recently, i've experienced pain in my legs more frequently than i used to, and it got me thinking that i might need some type of mobility aid in the future. of course, i don't necessarily want that to happen, but if it does, i won't cry over it (probably).

anyway, that got me thinking.

a lot of people believe that manfred began to use his cane after some injury, or they believe that he just has it for vanity's sake. i personally don't see either of those making sense (though if you do, that's totally cool! i'm not the authority on any characters, especially not him).

personally, i feel as though if he had the cane as a walking stick purely to show off his wealth, he would've gone for something a bit more... ornate? it's not as though my guy's a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination; if he does something, it's big and dramatic, which is all well and good. cheers.

as for the injury headcanon, i honestly can't say i personally see it. it does make a lot of sense, but i feel like canon somewhat restricts this from being possible? since he never took vacation days besides after dl-6 (and probably rarely took days off for injury or illness. the only times i imagine he took days off were the births of his children, and legally he basically would have had to with leave and all that).

getting injured, especially the most common way i see people hc that he would've gotten injured, from an accident while riding horseback, would definitely be something that doesn't particularly fit with his characterization, imo, considering that he would most likely take as many safety precautions as humanly possible to avoid getting hurt. (in my mind, he's actually quite anxious and just a generally neurotic person and as a result tends to consistently think worst-case scenario, leading to him over-preparing for just about everything.)

so what exactly is my headcanon?

i believe his cane usage was the product of hereditary chronic pain.

in my mind, the vks all kind of have this chronic hip and leg pain that starts manifesting as young as 20 or so and really kicks in around the mid 30s to early 40s. ultimately, this pain requires the use of mobility aids or (worst-case scenario) surgeries that may not actually be effective. of course, i don't actually know much about surgeries, so i am taking a small liberty with this aspect, but nevertheless:

in manfred's case, i think the chronic pain kicks in when he's about 38, and it absolutely wrecks him for the the first six months or so. he rarely goes anywhere other than work (sometimes church, which i also have other hcs about. maybe i'll post about those one day.) and home. he spends a lot of time sitting and debating with himself on whether or not he wants surgery, ultimately to decide that he doesn't because the success rate is too low for his tastes (perfectionism) and recovery time is awful.

because he has to use the cane for the rest of his life, he experiences a lot of internalized ableism. this leads him to do many things that were unsafe for him, and generally caused more angst than anything he might've thought it "solved".

for example (and i'm aware this is a movie specific thing), after being caught for his crimes in dl-6 and after his meltdown, instead of using his cane to walk out of the courtroom, which probably would have been more comfortable and more safe, he walks without it, opting instead to carry it: "maintaining his dignity", so to speak.

of course, with this problem being genetic and passed down from generation, his biological kids (for the most part) are affected by it. since only franziska is named in the series, i'll focus primarily on how this affects her. (i debated making this section a separate post, but honestly, fuck it)

as we know, franziska basically disappears from the aa series after aa3/aai2. (capcom please let her out of the basement... that's my daughter and i miss her) this plays perfectly into my headcanon, actually. since we get no information about her whereabouts beyond a very basic "she works with interpol and stuff", i can't help but feel that explanation is incomplete.

so, that also made me think: what if she was affected a bit earlier than most? earlier in this post i mentioned that the chronic pain can manifest as young as 20 years old... which happens to be around the age she is when she all but vanishes from the narrative. basically, i think that the pain, which she inherited from her father, caught up to her.

now, there are other implications to this. after deliberating with a mutual and friend of mine, @bucket-of-hyperfixations i concluded that she would most likely want/prefer to use traditional crutches. (i did also consider that she might use a wheelchair, but then i thought about how wheelchair users are treated and thought hard about how that'd be a no-go)

this is what i ultimately landed on mostly because considering her character and the distance she wants to create from her father (using a cane would probably remind her as well as other people of him, which was a huge thing that she railed against, especially in the third game), as well as the fact that she would most likely want to maintain the freedom to use her arms so she could use her whip, which forearm crutches, another option i considered for her, wouldn't provide.

of course, there's a lot more i could add to this, but i think that this is enough for now. i personally like talking about the vk family and making up headcanons about them, considering how little information we actually get in canon. that being said, i accept criticisms of my headcanon and don't think that other interpretations of what we are presented with are inherently wrong, even if i sometimes disagree with them.

six finds rex, rex is more or less adopted by holiday and six like in the series. rexs can build stuff out of his hands which baffles everyone, turns out he has active nanites in him and everyone is baffled. usually it turns you into a monster of some sort and shouldnt be used on people.

earth isnt supposed to have slimes but occasionally they show up and noone is sure how. slime farmers swear up and down the yellow slimes arent theirs, the tarr and tarr-like creatures that show up are making people anxious, and the broken telepads that keep showing up are a mystery to Providence, one of the biggest distributors and research facilities related to nanites and nanogoop. theyre also the number one organization people call when tarr and slimes show up and start wrecking stuff, or when evos appear.

the consortium are up to no good and so on. world domination and whatnot.

vk is the leader of a smaller island region called Abysus on a relatively desolate planet named Descolus Isolert in the Isolert system, where he spends a lot of time wrangling and farming mainly tarr and researching how they work and how to put them to good use. yes hes evil >:3c

rex is contacted by a lawyer and takes over the farm as per S3 E15 Hermanos, which is a relief to holiday because then she can move some of their surplus slimes there and providence can take over the farm and theyll have an offworld farm to use for slimes. needless to say, theyre all Mildly Surprised to find some random dude on the farm struggling to wrangle these weird yellow slimes none of them have seen before, and finding that rex has a brother.
