somehow managed to bruise the palm of my right hand, which is annoying, but even more annoying is the fact that I have absolutely no idea how I did it

guys i am screaming and like, i gotta vent about something. so i guess if you’re interested, feel free to read below the cut.

aight so i’m with a student publication on my campus as a videographer, so i edit videos. it’s been a chill gig during the fall semester, but everything subsequently gets worse this winter semester. so we had a meeting in january and one of the things the senior videographer brought up was the agony aunt promo video. the meeting was in mid january and they needed the video before february. i kinda got volun-told to do it since the other two videographers have projects that were assigned to them by the sr. videographer. so im like, aight, chill. i didn’t mind because like.. i had no assignments that was due until mid february and i’ve got the time. so i got the agony aunt promo done pretty quickly. side note though: i ended up buying $50 worth of stock footage for this one video since i didn’t know that there was a thing such as free stock footage until much later. i have now learned my lesson.

anyway, i get the video done before february and the sr. videographer gives her okay on it and says that it would be posted in the next few days.

it wasn’t. 

fast forward to february 20th (and they still haven’t posted the agony aunt promo on the publication’s instagram page). it’s the long weekend and also my mom’s birthday, so we were out of town for the day. on our way back home, i check my messages and see a message from the sr. videographer at 7pm. she’s requesting that i make a promotional video for the upcoming open mic. she tells me that all the information is on the instagram post. not thinking much of it, i go ‘alright’. so i checked the instagram post for details.

tell me. why. the announcement regarding the open mic was posted on february 2nd. and the date of the event (which is to be held over zoom) was february 23. 

i’m given basically less than three days to work on this video. so i’m frustrated and annoyed, but i messaged her and said i could get it done by the 21st. 

this was when i discovered the beauty of pexels and free stock footage which helped me IMMENSELY. i stayed up late, even though i was tired as fuck that night, to finish this video and upload it on the google drive. i message her that it was done but i was still seething. it’s not the best video i’ve done (and lemme tell you; editing a damn video takes time especially if you’re making it from scratch), but it’s good enough. i was like “idgaf if she critiques it. i am drunk rn and i have the confidence of a mediocre white boy and will gladly tell her to eff off and do the video herself”. 

she messages me not on the 21st but the 22nd, a day before the event. guess what she says? 

“hey, so they changed the date of the open mic from the 23rd to march 5th. can you change the date in the video please?”

WHAT THE ACTUAL MOTHERFUCK?!!

you mean to tell me. that you had me working tirelessly over this video to meet such a tight deadline... ONLY FOR YOU TO CHANGE THE DATE?!! i was so mad but ofc when i message her i just go “alright. got it”. i change the date and reuploaded it. this was on the 22nd.

they posted the open mic promo video a couple of days ago (March 1-2), and the agony aunt promo video (finally!) yesterday. 

the story should end there. but nope. there’s more.

 she messages me again today at 11am. “hey, would you be able to attend the open mic event tomorrow at 6pm and emcee with me? we can host a meeting in the morning so there’s no unpredictability and plan everything out.”

again: WHAT THE ACTUAL MOTHERFUCK?!!

i have work tomorrow. and i only get scheduled one day a week at work. technically, my shift is from 11:30am till roughly 5pm (it depends on how busy it is + how long my tables stick around for, but normally i’m done by 5pm). but even then, i’m exhausted as fuck after work since i’m on my feet and running around. 

so i’m like “oh so sorry but i’ve got work till 7pm tomorrow!” she has yet to reply.

but seriously: how inconsiderate are you of other people’s time that you consistently ask them to do things last minute/rush them to do something and not have their work be posted quickly enough? 

i get that this would help me work with tighter deadlines and i have experience, but for a student-run university publication, this shit is ridiculous. the only good thing is that i’m graduating in june and i won’t have to join them again the year after. even if i wasn’t graduating, i wouldn’t join them again because they’re a mess. also the only reason i joined in the first place was so i can say that i joined an extracurricular in university and didn’t just do nothing my four years in undergrad.

interview with me • lee taeyong

Niki: Good morning Mr. Lee and Ms. ______, thank you so much for taking your time off this morning to do this interview. 

Taeyong: No, no, it’s not a problem at all. 

________: This interview was bound to happen anyway, so it’s all okay. 

Taeyong: Yeah… 

Niki: Both of you attended the most prestigious high school in the island of Jeju, known for its socialite students and tremendously high standards. Can you please give us a bit of background from each of you. 

You and Taeyong looked at one another smiling, knowing that the two of you will have to repeat the exact same story again and again. 

________: Uh, well, my mother is the owner of NCT Kitchen, so I guess that it the main reason behind my current social status

Taeyong: We own Lee Industries, known for its, you know, agricultural production. Same reason as ________, probably the reason behind my current social status

________: Except that Taeyong over here is actually taking part in his family business, meanwhile I am working as my mother’s personal assistant. 

Taeyong: Well you’re at least putting effort into working now, very different from the ________ that I dated back in high school. 

________: That is true, I was quite a mess back in high school. Still am now, but less drinking and lashing out against people.

Taeyong: That was indeed one ________ experience. If you did not see ________ plot an evil scheme or sort against anyone, that was not this person sitting beside me. 

You could only nod and smile at Taeyong’s words. There was no possible way that you could deny any of the things that he said since most of the shenanigans that you caused made it to the media. 

Niki: Well from what I remember at least when I was reading the magazines and such during high school, you did come out a lot Ms. ________. Now that we are on the topic of your characters during high school, could you give us a bit more on how you two were during your time at Jeju for our readers here at Seasonies?

________: Well, as you said, I made a lot of appearances in magazines, newspapers, online articles, and so much more— and not all of them, in fact the majority of them, were either me being really drunk, or being pulled out of the car looking like I haven’t slept in decades. I put my mum under a lot of stress, and I do feel really terrible about the amount of money she had to pay to refrain the family business from being at risk, and most importantly, just putting up with me. 

And you were being truthful, for the most part at least. There was no doubt of how much trouble you caused during your high school days. You deliberately sent a picture of your ex’s previous girlfriend sucking the soul out of your Biology teacher in the lab to the so called ‘Gossip Girl’ of your school, creating a huge scandal within the school, risking the school’s reputation. You also hosted a party at your own house, having three of your ‘friends’ calling the entire neighbourhood, only leaving a mess in your house; and not to mention, the smell of alcohol remaining for a good whole week. Your mother was disappointed in you in many things, but this was probably by far one of the worst things that you had done. 

Taeyong: But don’t you think you improved a lot since then?

________: I hope I did, definitely tried to stay out of being the cover page of every magazine to be found in Korea. 

You and Taeyong chuckled, looking back at one another knowing how many times you have been featured in every possible media-- both physical and digital. 

Taeyong: I, on the other hand, was a perfect little boy—

________: That is complete bull, he always skipped lessons. I may have been a perfect epitome of chaos, but I at least got somewhat decent grades and did attend most of my lessons. 

Taeyong: Honestly that’s probably the only reason why you didn’t get expelled.

________: Hey! 

You two laughed again, his sparkly eyes being the same since the last time you saw them. 

Niki: Well, I can assure that you two were the commonly talked about duo in that school, and it’s not only me who says that. But, I’m pretty sure the two of you already know that the point of this interview isn’t really to talk about how you were as individuals, but rather together. 

Both of your laughter slowly died down, knowing to yourself that the interviewer was indeed not really that interested in who you have become. It was more of what happened between you and Taeyong. 

Niki: It’s been 6 years since the two of you went your own ways to different universities. In fact, I believe that one of you went to Yonsei University, and the other went to University of Leeds. Many thought that you two were still together, but it wasn’t until 3 years ago when we saw ________ being with Nakamoto Yuta, a well-known Japanese rock star—

________: Which ended after 5 months of fooling around, thank you

Niki: Yes, sorry about that. So, what happened?

Taeyong noticed your sudden change in posture, the atmosphere of the room gradually darkening; he knew how much of a painful and serious topic this was for the both of you, especially you. It wasn’t that your relationship ended badly, you two decided amongst yourselves hours after the two of you threw your Oxford cap up in the air. 

________: It w-wasn’t that that our relationship ended badly. Nobody cheated on anyone, nor was there hot ‘tea’ behind it. 

Taeyong: It was more on the fact that we couldn’t—

________: Understand each other properly 

Taeyong softly smiled at your words, somewhat proud of you for being brave to talk about this. You two may have decided amongst yourselves and thought it was best for you two part away, even though the two of you did not like it at all. 

________: Yeah… 

Taeyong: I guess you could say that I assume things too easily

________: Whereas I do things without thinking, which only led us to fights and disagreements

Taeyong: And although we were able to solve things and have our couple-y moments together,

________: it did get tiring… 

Taeyong could only nod his head as memories of countless, petty yet intense fights rushed through his mind, clearly hearing the amount of frustration and anger you had in your voice. And it would be a lie to say that you were not thinking of any of your past arguments as well. 

________: So I guess that’s what happened. 

You gave a little laugh, hoping to lighten up the mood. 

Niki: Oh… but I must ask about one thing, and I am really sorry but the company wrote these questions so, how do you still think of each other now? 

Taeyong: ________ has definitely improved, from what I hear and see from media outlets at least. There are more smiles now, and I think that you should continue since you have a really great smile. 

Taeyong wasn’t lying about this. Your smile was everything to him; it made him feel that he made you feel happy and vice versa, regardless of how cheesy that sounds. You immediately crouched your head down from the sudden compliment, only causing the person beside you to laugh. In his eyes, you haven’t changed at all. Maybe a bit more mature, but still the same. 

________: T-thank you? Umm, the first thing I noticed about Lee Taeyong was his eyes. I think everyone can agree that he has one of the most beautiful sets of eyes, and my thoughts haven’t changed about that at all. And still now, despite the 6 years of us being away from each other, I guess you could say that there is still that sense of… umm… 

Taeyong: Comfort?

________: Yeah, comfort… and warmth too… 

Taeyong: Yeah… 

Niki: Well thank you for joining us for Seasonies today, and I am really sorry to bring up such a serious topic. I hope the two of you for the best, and again, thank you so much! 

You and Taeyong got off your the black stools, walking out of the studio set, feeling somewhat exhausted from the pretty short chat. 

‘Even after 6 years, we’re still being contacted, huh?’ Taeyong asks you, cutting the silence in between the two of you. 

‘Yeah I guess so, but I’m not surprised to be honest’ you answered, looking up at the boy, your first love. The silence and awkwardness between the two of you slowly developed back to its place, not a single word exchanged with one another. You said your goodbye to Taeyong the moment you got out of the building, wanting to leave the odd environment you were just in. Or perhaps, you were trying to not fall in love with him all over again. Then again, you would never admit that to yourself. Not now at least.

dreams don’t end at “30″

so i just had a little breakthrough and maybe this wont sound like anything to anyone else but i just have to share it

so i’ve talked about this before. about how my friend and i were both planning these personal development like goals for this year that covid got in the way of. and he said something, about how this is his last year in his 20s and he wanted to get some goals accomplished before 30 

and i thought about that and realized something.

i have been feeling similarly about a few goals that i’ve been hanging onto for years and years. like i’m going to be honest with you, some people might remember this if you’ve been around here for a long time but probably not. anyway when i was in high school i really wanted to make music, sing, learn an instrument. and i did make some covers that i posted on myspace (showing my age here lol) and youtube but then i kind of gave up on it when

 1) became 18 and realized my dream to go to NYC and pursue music when i was 18 wasn’t happening because of a million reasons (it was very much a pipe dream, right? i mean you can’t have that dream and not prepare for it and i didnt. also i was too scared at the time to even move out to my own place if i had the funds to do so because my parents wouldnt have really approved and i was still so under their thumb) 

2) broke up with my musician boyfriend. which needed to happen. but he was the only person super passionate about that kind of goal at the time around me (till he ran lol)  and he actually is still doing music now so good for him but basically 

because of those 2 reasons i just let go of that dream all together as something i thought i wanted to do but was “unrealistic”.

but the thing about turning 30 and feelings like you needed to achieve all these personal/dreamy/goals in your 20s. what is that bullshit? why? 

what changes when you cross over to 30? i’ll tell you one thing. media pushes movies, books, films, everything about people chasing their dreams in their 20s and “settling” down in their 30s. where’s my inspiring movie about the 32 year old mom who finally wrote a song and performed it live after being terrified her whole life of doing so?

 think about it though

in your 30s you. *might* have a better paying job than you did in your 20s. which means, if you can manage to find time or a way for it, you *might* be able to save a little more money or afford to do something like, buy that guitar and guitar lessons in order to learn to play and write a song and live out your dream in some way, even if its just learning to play so you can play at an open mic. and maybe you’ll like that and you’ll somehow connect with likeminded people and form a band. idk. your dreams dont have to end in your 20s. 

you dont have to fall into the trap of your 20s are for your dreams that are so big you feel like the chance of achieving them is getting struck by lightening

and then your 30s are for fancy adult goals like buying a house, and going on a $10k vacation and those things are probably just as hard as the goals you had in your 20s but the world wont make you see it that way. its seen as “selfish” to prioritize and budget for your artistic goals - but not a house. no that’s responsible and what you “should” do. but its ok to prioritize something that’s going to give your soul fulfillment too! we need to believe that! because it’s true. we are not here just to work our jobs and live mundane colorless lives once we aren’t considered “young” anymore (but 30s are still young. not what i’m saying)

 you’re always going to be chasing something big and if you let the world control what that thing is you’re always going to be on some rat race. 

it’s fine if you achieve your goals in a different order than the world says you were supposed to. i got married young and had a child young, that was how my life played out and i’m happy with that because, yes, finding love and becoming a mother very much were goals of mine.

yes i dropped out of college because i couldn’t afford it and i couldnt find a major that felt worth being in debt for. and also, because hey guess what? contrary to what a lot of people will try to lead you to believe, college is not for everyone. and college does not = success. college drop out does not = failure. it’s just an option of something you could do with your life. AND if you didn’t go to your college in your 20s it doesnt mean you can’t in your 30s. or 50s. hell my husband, who did go to college saw elderly (think, 80s!) people going to his college as students! college isn’t just for 18 year olds fresh out of high school. 

My 27th birthday is in 2 weeks and no, i have not yet to worked up the courage to write an original song from words to music, or have the courage to get on a stage and sing anything, or talk to a stranger, or publish any of my writing or art, goals i’ve had whirling around in my brain since I was 18, but, it’s going to happen. maybe this year. maybe when i’m 35, but it’s going to happen. a number is not going to be the thing holding me back.

that whole mentality of “my youth is slipping away i need to achieve all these dreams before midnight the day of my 30th birthday” is so stupid and flawed and we all deserve to see ourselves, and our individual potential as more than that. 

last part of this rant - one of the reason i even became so passionate about reignighting some of my dusty, old goals, that it turned out, i still cared about, is because i had a moment where i was like

ok i am a mom. i am someones mom. how will my daughter see me, as a person, not just her mom? 

kevin and i always talk about how between the two of us we’ve both had a lot of quintessential young adult experiences that we look forward to sharing with her. like, quitting jobs, getting in car accidents, that one time i unknowingly participated in an illegal bonfire and ran from the cops then lied straight to their faces and somehow got away with it (literally my ONE act of teen rebellion), changing college majors like 3 years in (kevin), failed classes, tried cigarettes, etc like i’m ready, and hope that one day she will feel comfortable talking to us about things because we’ve been through things and have a lot of input and two different perspectives to offer

but further than that, i realized that i want her to know that her mom is a person too. i want her to know that mom is also passionate about writing, and music, and somehow tackled some of her goals in regards to that so that SHE can feel that SHE, too can do those things. and i know that, that is in part how it works 

because,

my dad IS an artist. my dad IS a musician. yall. my dad is SO talented.  my dad is brilliant. besides his artistic abilities which include, drawing literal realistic as fuck portraits, sculpting, painting, playing guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, he also knows music composition, etc etc etc beyond all of that, he also taught himself fucking PLUMBING and ELECTRICIAN SHIT to fix things in our house growing up. like he bought a book. and taught himself. my dad. i grew up thinking that was normal but i realized not everyones dad can just tear down the bathroom and rebuild it from scratch down to the plumbing without being a licensed professional.

but anyway the point is - as talented as my dad is, he doesnt really pursue his artistic dreams much. and its sad. i’m glad that i’ve seen some of the work he did when he was younger. i’m glad that if i bring it up, he’ll show me something he can do. but he doesnt pursue it anymore really. my dad works an exhausting physical labor job but even he, as a 50something year old has fallen into that trap of like, i dont have time to draw, but he will scroll his phone and read articles for hours and i’m not shaming him. i’m just saying we all have this problem in the modern era of technology and social media and what not (hell i am writing a post on tumblr instead of my book right now).

but if timing was different and my dad grew up in a different time, where lets say something distracted him from doing the little bit of art and music that he did when i was a kid that i was able to witness, if i hadnt seen that. i wouldnt know that.. in a way.. that’s in me. i mean, he’s my dad. if my dad could pick up a craft and work at it to be good at it, why can’t i? there are so many musicians and (kind unrelated but not rly - i think being “self made” is an art) business owners in my family. there’s either some common thread in our genetics ORRRRRRRRRR just growing up around people working at and succeeding at those kinds of goals shows you that it CAN be done so you’re more likely to believe in your abilities

and i want that for my daughter. because even as an almost 3 year old i can see that she has a gift for music, and reading. and even if i’m wrong about that and she grows up wanting to do some other thing as a job or hobby, i want her to know, by seeing her mom do it, that she can achieve anything she puts her heart to. you don’t have to box yourself in because of your age or your sex or the fact that you’re a parent. 

and your dream doesnt have to become your career. it can be a hobby and still be fulfilling. like yes, 18 year old me dreamed about some life in nyc singing in clubs or bars or whatever and being ~famous (lol) and that did not happen, but i can still get out there and play open mic downtown and get that love of music, and desire to face my fear of performing out of my system. maybe i’ll love it. maybe i’ll hate it. but i’ll have done it. and that’s the ultimate goal. 

sorry i went off but i had to get that out of my system and i’m very passionate about

“Who’s the kid,” says Sorahiko, glowering down at the wild mop of sunflower yellow hair poking out from behind Nana’s back. Kid is clearly hiding behind her, and Nana is clearly shielding him, because her next smile looks a little more toothy than it should be.

“Be nice,” she chides. “This is Yagi-kun! I’ve told you about him before, remember?”

“No.”

She doesn’t even miss a beat. “Well, your memory extends to your work schedule and all the places you can buy cheap taiyaki.” Nana snaps her fingers at Sorahiko. “Anyway, Yagi-kun is planning to apply to U.A., and he wants to join the hero course. I thought it wouldn’t hurt to give him a demonstration of what to expect!”

This explains why they’re meeting in a park in their hero gear. It’s Sunday morning. Sorahiko could still be asleep right now, but he’d gotten a late night text from Nana asking to meet in their hero-gear, and because he’d just come off-shift, his delirious brain had agreed.

“You want to spar? Here?” he demands. The park is the worst environment he can operate in, especially since there aren’t any convenient children’s equipment to climb into and kick off of. Nana’s put him on the spot in flat land. He’s going to yell at her so much later.

“You’ve got your boots, don’t you?” she shoots back. She ushers Yagi out from behind her. He’s a tall weed of a boy, hands and feet still too large for the rest of him, and a face that’s a little too gaunt. Sorahiko presumes Nana will be feeding him until the hollows of his eyes fill back out, so the intense blue of his irises aren’t so… intense. “Yagi-kun, sit on the bench. Time us for three minutes, okay?”

“A-ah, okay, oshishou…”

Oshishou? Sorahiko narrows his eyes at Nana, who startles at the incredibly respectful, incredibly suspicious term. Nana’s not a certified master of any craft, much less a teacher. She laughs after a second.

“Yagi-kun, maybe hold off on that, huh?”

The kid mutters his acquiescence, and Nana is bounding to where Sorahiko is, a good distance opposite of him. She clunks her two fists together like this is a boxing match. It probably is. Sorahiko’s going to have to launch himself at her, and then do some rapid footwork to avoid getting slammed in the stomach or head. And since she expects them to be done by three minutes, she’ll probably break out her Quirk like three times… and use One for All to finish.

He says goodbye to a painless Sunday.

“I would’ve liked the warning,” he tells her. He raises his fists, loosely curled, and tenses.

“What villain warns of an attack?”

Nana shifts her weight. Instinctively, Sorahiko mirrors her, and the familiar adrenaline rush surges through him and his ears, but he hears her shout “Let’s go!” just fine. Fine enough to immediately jet to the side from Nana’s charge forward, slinging profanity as he dodges her grab.

He takes another breath, gambles the oxygen away in an effort to return and land one kick. His heel smashes down; he’s aiming for her spine and expecting her to twist around it. And of course, now she chooses to tap into One for All, because she lets him hit her, like she’s proving a point. Nana’s point being: she’s completely unharmed.

Oh, she’s crouched in a crater now, but otherwise? Completely unharmed.

“Fuck,” he manages, seeing Nana lift her head and catch him with a gimlet eye. It’s the split second that grounds him—the panic of did she use it, did I just paralyze my best friend—and that’s when Shimura fucking Nana spins in her half-crouch, seizes his boot by the knee, and yanks. “Fuck!”

“Watch your fucking language!” she laughs as Sorahiko is flung over her head.

Just for that, he spitefully aims his next output of pressurized air in her face. Nana splutters.

At the end of three minutes, Sorahiko’s face gets mashed into the dirt, one arm twisted up behind him. At least she’s put him at an angle so he can say, rebelliously, “You suck.” Straddled across his back, her other hand scrunched in his hair, Nana laughs again. He can hear the kid yelling time, and the increasing volume of shoes thudding against the grass.

“Yield?”

“Yeah, I yield.”

She lets go of him and rolls off, eventually sitting up and tucking her legs under her. Too exhausted to follow, or even gripe about the kid anymore, Sorahiko stays face down on the ground. His victory is scuffing her clothes and swiping her hair-tie. She plucks the latter off his wrist and fixes her half-updo.

“Yagi-kun!” she cheers. “Come sit, come sit.” She pats the patch of grass in front of her; the kid awkwardly rearranges himself so he too is cross-legged. “So this is, ah... “

“Gran Torino,” he grunts, reluctantly turning his head to peer warily at the kid. Nana might be fine showing off her face and probably telling her name to some random adolescent, but Sorahiko likes his anonymity.

“Nice to meet you,” Yagi mumbles. He edges a little closer, and then a veritable torrent of words come spilling out of him. “Oshishou, that was amazing, the way you reacted so fast to that last axe-kick! Is it because you’re friends with Gran Torino? Is that how you became familiar to his pattern of movement? Or did you see it too?”

“What pattern,” Sorahiko demands.

Nana knuckles him in the ribs. “We’re good friends,” she says to Yagi. “The downside of me knowing Gran Torino is that he knows me too, so he can adjust on the fly.”

“Ah…” Yagi tents his fingers. “So you did let him hit you that first round?”

“Yep! You’re an astute young man, Yagi-kun.” Nana gently taps her fist against his shoulder. Sorahiko is confused and quite possibly concussed. Maybe that’s why she scheduled the spar; so he wouldn’t be too vocally opposed to this entire meeting. “I was born with the Quirk: Fade Out, but the Quirk that gives me this strength and durability—”

“Hey,” he interrupts, to no avail.

“That Quirk was given to me.”

“Given?” breathes Yagi.

“Flicker Vision,” says Sorahiko, aghast at her lack of subtlety. This is a civilian. This is a civilian brat. Has she lost her mind? How did this kid manage to latch onto Nana and land here, without being politely shaken off?

“Hush, you,” she tells him. She won’t even meet his eyes. “Yagi-kun, Gran Torino’s a great trainer for all his grumpiness. He helped me control this Quirk, One for All, within a week.”

Control. Yeah, that’s a great word for it. Nana has had One for All for two years, and she is still leery of its potency. From what she’s told him, she uses the bare minimum to boost her speed, strength, and durability. She keeps the embers banked, and doesn’t dare to fan them into flames.

“So cool,” the kid marvels.

“He is,” Nana agrees, setting off all kinds of mushy feelings fluttering around Sorahiko’s stomach. Her next words petrify those feelings stone cold. “He’s going to help me train you!”

“I am not.” He shoves himself up, stifling a groan at the familiar aches, and sits next to her. “I’m busy.”

“With what?”

“With… with…” Sorahiko struggles to come up with a decent excuse. It doesn’t help that they have an audience of one, tracking their banter like it’s a tennis match. Lesson one: there is no denying Shimura nee Chiratsuki Nana. There are only attempts at deflecting. “With adult stuff. I have a life outside hero work, you know.”

She frowns. “Since when?”

Just venting about work...

At my job, we are supposed to have an hour break and an hour of prep. An hour break is generous and an hour prep is woefully inadequate, so prep bleeds into break all the time. I’ve never taken an hour break. It’s usually 10 or 15 min, 30 when I can.

However, our schedule changes daily and this break/prep time is NOT consecutive. It’s 15 min off duty here, 30 min off there, etc. Which makes getting anything done during that down time really difficult - as soon as you set up, it’s time to break down. Then you have to do it again later when your next off duty block shows up.

We are also perpetually understaffed. Most schools in our company have at least 2 of my type of class divided by age level, and at least two, but usually three, teachers per class. My school? Has 1 class of combined ages (complicating things immensely!) with three teachers, one of whom works 10-7, one who is part time and works 9:30-3, and then me, who works 9-5. This means that there are times of day when I am the only teacher of my age group around, or my coworker is, so there’s no choice but to put us on the duty schedule during those times. In other words, those are popular break times for other teachers, but we have to be on duty because there’s no one else. (It also means there’s no one to share the load for school event planning so I’m a leader for every, single. event. 1 hour of prep a day during which I have to prep, grading, cleaning, organizing, lesson planning, prop making, and event planning... HOW??)

And on top of that, I have never to my memory actually had a full 2 hours prep/break time on my schedule. Never. The longest is 1 hr 45, which is close - but that’s rare. On a regular day, it’s 1.5 hrs, or 1 hour 15 min. On days when another teacher calls out sick and we can’t get a sub, or on days when we have parent meetings or after school classes, and I have to pick up the slack, I might have 1 hour.

And on top of the top of that - meetings run long, the teacher supposed to take over for your shift before you go on break is late, etc, all these things add up and... for example, yesterday I was off literally 40 min the entire day. 10 min in the morning (was supposed to be 15, meeting ran long), 15 in the afternoon (was supposed to be 30 but the teacher who made the scheduled goofed and no one was available to cover a 30 min block, so me and another teacher split it), and 15 min in the afternoon (again was supposed to be 30 but the teachers supposed to take over my duty showed up 15 min late because her class had run long).

And that’s the end of a week of days just like that - only one day this week did I have a normal off duty schedule, and three times during the week I was on duty for 2 hours non stop in the afternoon (a shift that is not coveted!)

Whether normal or crunch time, I am on my feet all day. My legs ache so much at the end of the day. I look after really young kids who need a lot of supervision, and if I so much as look away to sneeze at the wrong time, it could spell disaster. It’s really hard sometimes. I joke that right now I’m working harder at this job than at any other yet getting paid the least of any job I’ve had - but it’s not really a joke. That is the situation. In spite of that, I like this job soooo much more than my others. I am an involved teacher and have a close daily relationship with all my kids. I love that I’m the one who can calm them down. I love joking and playing with them. I love planning our activities and lessons. If you asked me even a couple years ago whether I’d ever want to teach this age long term, I’d have said no. Now, I’m finding it so fulfilling every day.

As you might imagine, I work overtime a lot. TBH, I should be doing it even more, for better quality. But I also have 1.5 hour commute that is sometimes 2 hours especially in the evening, and I tend to pass out after dinner so. I find it difficult to feel like I’m not already working really hard. But there’s always something left to do. It drives me crazy. I worried that it was just me, but my coworkers as well are feeling this way.

We were told that we were going to get a new teacher to help with the burden. They were supposed to come in September... then October... now it’s mid-Sep and we have heard absolutely nothing. They should be showing up for training if they’re going to start in October. We area all extremely skeptical. My personal take is, the company didn’t budget for hiring new teachers during the year at all... we have another teacher going on maternity leave so she needs a replacement, and our situation might be tight, but it’s not as impossible as not having a teacher at all. So that’s how things stand at the moment.

So that’s all stressful but mostly exhausting. I feel like the stress is a lot less than it was when I started the job (thank goodness) and that gives me confidence. But what I really need is to cut down on the exhaustion. I want to spend more time with my bf on the weekends but I tend to drag myself out to see him because I’m so tired. I want to go on hikes but my feet hurt every day. I’ve always been a homebody and an introvert so it’s not like I was super active before, but I definitely did more on my own volition, and most of all, I wasn’t so damn tired. (I mean, I’m also not 20 anymore x’D gotta factor that in too...)

Anyway, as bad as I feel sometimes... I also feel like I can’t complain. Because my schedule probably isn’t as bad as some others. For example, my Japanese coworkers are required to work an hour longer than me. I believe they also get paid less (paid less for more work - international teachers in Japan, this is very often the case for your Japanese coworkers! It was like that at my previous job as well. I don’t know what the reason is - they work a lot of overtime too that they don’t get paid for - they do sometimes get sizable bonuses that some say make up for the salary difference but... idk, it’s all sketchy and weird). So if I complain about my salary, it feels selfish, even though the salary I’m getting is barely sustainable for me as someone who lives alone with no dependents. And if I complain about the amount of time I work or the amount of responsibilities I have, there are people with more of both. Even if coworkers would agree with me, I feel like it’s only gonna make me look weak if I voice my complaints.

Things I love about my job - all the things I mentioned before about my students, as well as the fact that my coworkers are upbeat and team players and very helpful. We all support each other a lot. There’s no brow-beating if you have to stay home sick. It sucks - it does - because of being understaffed, but no one talks badly about you like in some other jobs I’ve had here in Japan. We don’t get sick leave, but at least people understand that sickness is a thing that happens. Generally I feel respected and like I can respect my coworkers. And I feel like everyone really cares about the kids and wants to give them a great school experience. We’re not just coasting by. It’s helped me to think a lot about the importance of work culture. I feel encouraged and inspired to do more for my students because others around me are doing the same with theirs. It’s so different from the eikaiwa where no one really gave a damn about anything. (Except the managers, about money.)

That’s why I don’t want to leave. I wish I could go into every detail because there are sooo many other things driving me up the wall every day that seem like they should never have happened or should be high on the to-fix list... but the to-fix list is extremely long. And it means something to me that, in spite of all that, I still like it here and want to stay. Like, that means something’s going very right, in spite of all the wrong.

And adulthood really is just being tired all the time, I think that’s true for all adults unless you’re just really blessed with an abundance of energy. Caffeine is popular for a reason. It is the hardest pill for me to swallow because everyone seems to expect me to have all these interesting things to say and I’m like, “I just work, eat, and sleep... "

We had a part-time worker in the spring who unfortunately quit. While she was there things were sooo much more manageable. Just one part time worker... If my job could just give us that, I would be so much happier. But it seems like asking too much. I wish I had a coworker to talk to and share opinions but I’m worried about that being seen as weak or selfish thing. You never know what they’ll say at a performance review. (Not that we get those. When you can’t afford to hire anyone new, you can’t really afford to fire over small things either.)

“So let me get this straight,” Kyuhyun starts, setting down his wine glass. “You don’t have any interest in Kibum, but you’ve already agreed, unprompted, to give up your precious lesson review time to give him a tour around and teach him how to use radios?” 

“Have you seen the new art teacher?” Kyuhyun asks. He’s got two cupholders of coffee in his hands so Minho takes one before answering.

“Not yet. Why, is there something I need to know?” he closes his planner, knowing full well that any time he had had to review his lesson plan for the day was now gone.

“Not that I know. You know I’m not good at the people thing,” Kyuhyun shrugs.

“And yet you still became a teacher. Fascinating.”

“Hey! Don’t forgot who bought you that coffee! Anyway, Leeteuk is parading him so everyone knows him before they get there. Suho said something about him seeming like your type when he did the group interview and from what I saw of him I mostly agree. Just to give you a heads up. Also Chang says hi and to not forget it’s wine night.”

Minho laughs. At the sound of Leeteuk’s voice, Kyuhyun leaves. No sooner does the door finish closing when it’s opened again. “Minho, this is Kim Kibum. He’s the new art teacher and guidance counselor. I thought it might be good to introduce him to everyone who wasn’t on the interview committee,” he explains.

When finally properly looks at Kibum, he’s glad that Kyuhyun came by this morning.

By the time his kindergartners start arriving, Minho’s had enough time and coffee to collect himself. He finishes checking his mini-lesson set and starts wiping down tables when he hears the first little knock on his door. He opens it and his three favorite girls, Seola, Sooah, and Yeri all come running in with what he assumes are pictures for him to put on the wall.

“Mr. Minho! Look! I drew you a picture of my cat!” Seola says first.

“Wow, that’s so good, Seola! Can I put it on the wall?”

She nods enthusiastically and after handing Minho her paper, pushes Sooah to show hers.

“What did you make, Sooah?” Minho asks, knowing she needs a little more encouragement than her sister.

“I wrote you a letter,” she says shyly.

“That’s so nice, Sooah. I’m going to put it on my desk so I can read it later, ok? What did you make, Yeri?” “I drew you a pizza!!” Yeri exclaims, putting the paper as close to his face as her small arms can reach.

“Woah! That’s a good looking pizza! Did you have pizza for dinner yesterday?”

“No, but I wish that I did.”

Minho laughs, taking the picture.

“I wish I had pizza yesterday too. Is it ok if I put your picture up with Seola’s?” he asks, already knowing the answer.

Morning lessons go smoothly -- or rather as smoothly as kindergarten can go. Most of the morning has been spent talking about things that the children like, dislike, and don’t know if they like. When his timer goes off signalling its time for art, Minho’s suddenly shy at the thought of seeing Kibum again. He tells the children to put their things in their cubbies so they can walk over.

“Alright class. Remember how I said last week that there was going to be a new art teacher? Today is his first day so I want you to be nice to him, ok? I have stickers with your name on them so he can know who you are, so please try to keep them on.”

As they line up, Minho gives them their nametag, helping them put it on their shirt as needed. Seoeun, who’s had a good morning, gets to be the line leader; Seojun, who’s had a less than stellar morning, gets to walk in the back with Minho. He prays that there won’t be a meltdown between the twins and is pleasantly surprised when they make it to the art room without a single whine from anyone. When they all get inside the room, Minho stands in the doorway.

“This is Mr. Kibum. Please try to listen to him and have a fun time ok? I’ll see you when your projects are done!”

Kibum waves and introduces himself again. He beckons Minho over.

“So the first two teachers didn’t give me any warnings and Mr. Leeteuk didn’t really give me time to ask anything before. Is there anything I should know beforehand?” he whispers, looking a little shaken.

“They’re mostly a good bunch. Seola, Sooah, and Yeri are loud but harmless as long as you let them sit together. Chanyeol can be loud and clumsy but he means well. Seoeun and Seojun might fight but should be ok if you mildly separate them. If it gets to be too much, I’ll just be in the break room and I can come in, just phone me on the radio.” he explains, pointing them out. He tries to use as much of a reassuring tone as he can manage without sounding condescending. It seems like it works and Kibum relaxes a little.

“Thanks, go enjoy your lunch.” he steps away and addresses the class. “Okay, who likes stickers?!”

While Minho loves his class, he loves lunchtime just as much. He savors the quiet peacefulness of his sandwich without little hands grabbing at him. He’s halfway through his lunch when Suho walks in.

“So what do you think?” he asks, retrieving his own lunch from the refrigerator.

“I made a wonderful sandwich”

Suho laughs. “You know what I meant.”

“Do I?”

“What do you think of the new art teacher?” Suho asks as he sits down across from Minho.

“Is this his first teaching job or did the bigger kids just try to ruin his morning?”

“It’s his first proper teaching job. He did solely administrative work in his last job.”

“Leeteuk didn’t think it’d be rough throwing him in first day without at least a parent aide or something?”

“You seem awfully concerned about him, Minho. Take a liking already?”

Minho goes to answer, but is interrupted by the radio.

“Uh, Minho?”

Suho hands the radio to Minho, a smug look on his face.

“Yes, Kibum?”

There’s a pause before an uneasy “Can you come back to the classroom please?”

If he’s not mistaken, Minho can clearly hear someone trying to apologize in the background. He sighs. Seoeun and Seojun had almost made it through lunch without fighting. Though he’s sad about losing the last five minutes of his lunch break, he’s not upset about having to see Kibum for those extra minutes.

“I’ll be there in a second”

Suho continues looking smug as Minho cleans up his lunch.

“Are you coming to Changmin’s later?”

“Don’t worry, I am. I’ll see you later ok?”

As Minho walks down the hallway, he tries to listen for crying but is vaguely surprised not to hear any. When he reaches the classroom, the class is seemingly ok. He waves at Kibum from outside. Kibum motions for him to come in. He’s greeted by a chorus of loving “Mr. Minho!”s and a lack of fighting twins. Something is off though. Instinctively, he does a head count. Then it hits him. His class is only ten students, but there’s eleven in the room. Haechan’s older brother, Minhyung, had snuck into class again. Though Minhyung was two grades above Haechan, there was a separation issue between the two of them once the younger had started attending school. The two tried to pretend like they didn’t know what was wrong. Kibum came over to Minho.

“You only have 10 students right? I don’t know where he came from but he keeps saying he’s in this class too.” he whispers, obviously confused.

“Minhyung, you know you’re not supposed to be in here. Come on, I’ll walk you back.”

He reaches for Kibum’s radio. Kibum tries to go back to teaching the activity.

“K1 to 2.”

“This is 2, go ahead.”

“I’m bringing Minhyung to you from art.”

“We’re in the cafeteria.”

Minho puts the radio on Kibum’s desk and takes Minhyung’s hand. He hopes Kibum realizes it’s time to clean up so that he can take his class back on time.

By some miracle, the rest of the day goes quickly. Seoeun and Seojun manage to not fight each other and the whole class is so happy that Minho gives everyone a gold star for the day. One by one they all leave and Minho starts tidying up for the next day. There’s a soft knock on his door, and he calls out that it’s unlocked. He had figured it was Suho or Kyuhyun coming to badger him about attending wine night, even though he’d already committed four different times, so he’s surprised when he sees Kibum shyly poking his head in the door.

“Is it ok if I come in?” he asks.

Minho nods and quickly finishes wiping down the last table. Kibum comes in and stands just next to the doorway. “Is everything ok? I know first days can be rough, especially when you switch out so many students.”

“If I’m being honest, it was a little overwhelming,” Kibum admits. “Thank you for handling that for me earlier. I thought I was going crazy!”

Minho laughs. He grabs his cooler from behind his desk and offers Kibum a water before getting himself one.

“Minhyung and Haechan have separation issues, it happens at least once a month. You’ll get used to it. Every year there’s at least one set of siblings like that.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah,” Minho says, laughing. “Siblings are almost always a challenge. Occasionally you get sweet ones like Seola and Sooah that get along really well, but usually its either a Minhyung-Haechan separation issue or a Seoeun-Seojun fighting situation, or a mixed feeling situation like Chanyeol and Kyungsoo.”

“Ahh. I’m an only child so I guess that’s why I wouldn’t know.”

“Is this your first proper teaching job?”

Kibum nods, taking a sip of his water.

“I worked in an advising center before but I haven’t taught a class since I got my degree. I don’t know how you guys handle it. It’s only the first day and I’m exhausted.”

“It’s a learning curve. You’ll get it.” “Is that a teaching pun?”

They both laugh.

“It wasn’t intended, but if the shoe fits.”

“Thanks for putting nametags on your students by the way. It was incredibly helpful, even though you had the most manageable class.”

“Oh, you’re welcome. Part of it is because of the two twins. I’m glad it helped.”

Squeaks from the radio interrupts the conversation.

“K2 to K1”

Minho grabs the radio from his desk and motions for Kibum to stay.

“This is K1, go ahead”

“Are you clear?”

“Yes”

“Minho my sweet dear coworker, please tell me you have an extra pack of laminating sheets that I can use”

“I absolutely do, Sunny.”

“I have to leave, if you could drop it in my mailbox, I’ll bring you a piece of cake tomorrow.”

“Will do” There’s a pause as the radio goes silent.

“That reminds me. Did they teach you about the radios?” Minho asks.

Kibum shakes his head, his eyes fixed on the floor as if he’s avoiding something.

“No, but it seems like there are a lot of things they didn’t properly tell me about.” “If you’d like, I usually get here at around seven. I can try and show you around a little and maybe go over like procedural stuff that they didn’t go over with you.”

Kibum looks up and smiles. “That’d be wonderful. Thanks, Minho.”

His phone rings and he waves goodbye before heading into the hallway. Minho finishes cleaning up, both excited and nervous to see Kibum again in the morning.

“What are you going to do if Jonghyun is all googly eyes for him?” Suho asks, more than a little drunk.

“Jonghyun just found a new playmate. Maybe 2.” Minho replies.

“Ok. What are you going to do if Jonghyun is all hot for your man though?” Kyuhyun repeats.

While Minho usually greatly enjoys wine night, he’s just not feeling it today. Whether it’s because he refuses to have more than a glass on a school night or because of everyone’s teasing, he decides it’s time to go home. Kyuhyun and Changmin’s apartment is thankfully only a few blocks away from his own, so he doesn’t have to worry about driving. As he walks home, he finally has another quiet moment for himself. As he puts his key into the lock, he decides that he is interested in Kibum. To what level, he isn’t sure; but maybe, just maybe, he’ll allow himself to find out.

Though Minhyung was two grades above Haechan, there was a separation issue between the two of them once the younger had started attending school. The two tried to pretend like they didn’t know what was wrong. Kibum came over to Minho.

“You only have 10 students right? I don’t know where he came from but he keeps saying he’s in this class too.” he whispers, obviously confused.

“Minhyung, you know you’re not supposed to be in here. Come on, I’ll walk you back.”

He reaches for Kibum’s radio. Kibum tries to go back to teaching the activity.

“K1 to 2.”

“This is 2, go ahead.”

“I’m bringing Minhyung to you from art.”

“We’re in the cafeteria.”

Minho puts the radio on Kibum’s desk and takes Minhyung’s hand. He hopes Kibum realizes it’s time to clean up so that he can take his class back on time.

By some miracle, the rest of the day goes quickly. Seoeun and Seojun manage to not fight each other and the whole class is so happy that Minho gives everyone a gold star for the day. One by one they all leave and Minho starts tidying up for the next day. There’s a soft knock on his door, and he calls out that it’s unlocked. He had figured it was Suho or Kyuhyun coming to badger him about attending wine night, even though he’d already committed four different times, so he’s surprised when he sees Kibum shyly poking his head in the door.

“Is it ok if I come in?” he asks.

Minho nods and quickly finishes wiping down the last table. Kibum comes in and stands just next to the doorway. “Is everything ok? I know first days can be rough, especially when you switch out so many students.”

“If I’m being honest, it was a little overwhelming,” Kibum admits. “Thank you for handling that for me earlier. I thought I was going crazy!”

Minho laughs. He grabs his cooler from behind his desk and offers Kibum a water before getting himself one.

“Minhyung and Haechan have separation issues, it happens at least once a month. You’ll get used to it. Every year there’s at least one set of siblings like that.”

“Really?”

“Oh yeah,” Minho says, laughing. “Siblings are almost always a challenge. Occasionally you get sweet ones like Seola and Sooah that get along really well, but usually its either a Minhyung-Haechan separation issue or a Seoeun-Seojun fighting situation, or a mixed feeling situation like Chanyeol and Kyungsoo.”

“Ahh. I’m an only child so I guess that’s why I wouldn’t know.”

“Is this your first proper teaching job?”

Kibum nods, taking a sip of his water.

“I worked in an advising center before but I haven’t taught a class since I got my degree. I don’t know how you guys handle it. It’s only the first day and I’m exhausted.”

“It’s a learning curve. You’ll get it.” “Is that a teaching pun?”

They both laugh.

“It wasn’t intended, but if the shoe fits.”

“Thanks for putting nametags on your students by the way. It was incredibly helpful, even though you had the most manageable class.”

“Oh, you’re welcome. Part of it is because of the two twins. I’m glad it helped.”

Squeaks from the radio interrupts the conversation.

“K2 to K1”

Minho grabs the radio from his desk and motions for Kibum to stay.

“This is K1, go ahead”

“Are you clear?”

“Yes”

“Minho my sweet dear coworker, please tell me you have an extra pack of laminating sheets that I can use”

“I absolutely do, Sunny.”

“I have to leave, if you could drop it in my mailbox, I’ll bring you a piece of cake tomorrow.”

“Will do” There’s a pause as the radio goes silent.

“That reminds me. Did they teach you about the radios?” Minho asks.

Kibum shakes his head, his eyes fixed on the floor as if he’s avoiding something.

“No, but it seems like there are a lot of things they didn’t properly tell me about.” “If you’d like, I usually get here at around seven. I can try and show you around a little and maybe go over like procedural stuff that they didn’t go over with you.”

Kibum looks up and smiles. “That’d be wonderful. Thanks, Minho.”

His phone rings and he waves goodbye before heading into the hallway. Minho finishes cleaning up, both excited and nervous to see Kibum again in the morning.

“So let me get this straight,” Kyuhyun starts, setting down his wine glass. “You don’t have any interest in Kibum, but you’ve already agreed, unprompted, to give up your precious lesson review time to give him a tour around and teach him how to use radios?”

Minho tries to think of a clever answer but comes up blank.

“It’s better than how we were, babe,” Changmin chimes in. “We actively avoided each other for 2 months before falling madly in love.”

Minho and Suho both roll their eyes. While Changmin and Kyuhyun had always been dating since they started meeting up regularly, sometimes they were a little too much. Even for romance junky Suho. While Minho was annoyed at everyone’s teasing, he’s glad that at least they aren’t making out.

“What are you going to do if Jonghyun is all googly eyes for him?” Suho asks, more than a little drunk.

“Jonghyun just found a new playmate. Maybe 2.” Minho replies.

“Ok. What are you going to do if Jonghyun is all hot for your man though?” Kyuhyun repeats.

While Minho usually greatly enjoys wine night, he’s just not feeling it today. Whether it’s because he refuses to have more than a glass on a school night or because of everyone’s teasing, he decides it’s time to go home. Kyuhyun and Changmin’s apartment is thankfully only a few blocks away from his own, so he doesn’t have to worry about driving. As he walks home, he finally has another quiet moment for himself. As he puts his key into the lock, he decides that he is interested in Kibum. To what level, he isn’t sure; but maybe, just maybe, he’ll allow himself to find out.

Pairing: Draco x Reader in 5th Year

Summary: You join Dumbledore’s Army but Draco doesn’t know about it. Yet. 

Chapter 2: Love and Lies (Here you can read Chapter 1)

“I want to join you.” You stated clearly looking at Hermione’s serious face.

“(Y/N), what are you talking about?”

“I know what you are doing or practising in the Room of Requirement. Luna and Cho were enthusiastically talking about it last night.”

“The Great Hall is probably not the best place to talk about this.“

“Well then let’s go take a walk outside..” 

Hermione didn’t even finish her breakfast yet but you didn’t care at all right now. This was too important. Umbridge didn’t teach you ANYTHING about defending yourselves and you knew for sure that sooner or later you must learn how to fight to survive. Probably sooner than later.

“I told them to be more careful about this topic..“

In the meantime you were heading towards the Great Lake.

“Don’t you trust me, Hermione? Why didn’t you tell me in the first place? You know how much I dislike Umbridge’s -”

“I don’t trust your boyfriend who goes by the very special name Dra-co Mal-foy.”

She pronounced his name as if he was some kind of a baneful insect. It hurt you but after Draco insulting her numerous times, you couldn’t get mad at her. 

“He doesn’t have to know.. Look Hermione, I really want to practise. I want to be able to defend myself and I know for sure that Harry is the one who can help us the most.“

“So that means you believe him? You believe that Voldemort is back?“

“I never doubted that..”

“Ok (Y/N), meet us today 30 minutes after Potions at the Seventh-floor corridor in front of -”

 “The Room of Requirement.”

Hermione gave you a stern look.

“Malfoy must not know this. I hope I can trust you with that.”

 “He won’t Hermione. I’m not going to tell anyone.”

After this rather awkward, kind of disappointing but still successful conversation you went back to the Castle. Hermione and you had been good friends since first year but ever since you dated Draco she wasn’t that warm towards you anymore. Especially after the disaster at the Triwizard Tournament last year. But again - you understood her. Draco had always been “the bad guy” who mocked on her, her friends and almost on everyone at Hogwarts. But he was exceptionally loving towards you. You felt like no one really knew him as good as you. Draco presented himself as tough, inviolable and cold but his heart was soft. Soft, passionate and emotional. If they only knew...

“(Y/N), where have you been all the time?” Draco stood in front of you, kindly smiling at you. He pulled you out of your thoughts. 

“I was just about to go to the library.”

“Are you ok, (Y/N)? Why are you staring at me like that?”

I was thinking about you the whole time, you idiot!

“I’m fine Draco, I just missed you.” You hugged him tightly as he put his chin on your head, holding you close. 

“I missed you too, love.” He spoke very softly.

“Join me at the library? I want to get my homework done before Potions.“ Potions. You had to find an excuse. You had to lie to Draco and it already broke your heart. Yet, you had no other choice.

“Alright.”

He took your hand in his and you were walking the last steps towards the library as this pink, annoying, self-regarding woman stood in front of you with her hands on her sides, giving you her well-known fake smile.

“What is SHE doing here?!” Draco said more to himself rolling his eyes. 

“You can’t get closer than six inches.” She pointed her wand against you, spoke a spell with her shrill voice and within seconds Draco and you got thrown away from each other falling on the Floor.

“My father-”

“Your father can’t do anything about this. I make the rules here, Mr. Malfoy.”She still had her fake smile on her face.  

“You should be grateful. This school would have gone wild if I didn’t come here,” Umbridge stated, tilted her head to one side and walked away.

The both of you were not surprised at all. It was just a matter of time that something like this would happen.

“We have to be careful..”

“(Y/N), this is ridiculous! I don’t care what this -”

“Draco you know she can be dangerous!”

“I know,” Draco hissed.

You slowly walked into the library, sat down and started doing your homework - always making sure you didn’t come too close to each other. This was unbelievable.

After your study session and Potions you told Draco you were going to meet Luna. It broke your heart to lie to him. When you reached the Seventh Floor stepping in the Room of Requirement you felt how everyone stared at you with quite surprised expressions on their faces. Everything was too complicated. You used to get along with many people here in Hogwarts and were considered as a friendly and intelligent student. But as soon as you got together with Draco people started mistrusting you. There were only a few people left who didn’t automatically assume that you crossed over to the dark side. Again- you couldn’t blame them. But Draco was worth it.

“As you might have noticed already, (Y/N) is joining us -” Hermione couldn’t finish her sentence.

“She is dating Malfoy, I hope you are aware of that!” Seamus yelled.

“I am here to learn something just like you, I’m not going to tell anybody..”

“We don’t have much time, let’s start the lesson,” Harry interrupted them.

 1 week later

 You almost fell asleep listening to Professor Binns talking about History of Magic. The last week was quite exhausting for you. Constantly lying to Draco about your meetings with Dumbledore’s Army and being unable to talk to him for longer than two minutes (while always making sure Umbridge or Mr. Filch didn’t catch you) made this whole week a mess. A little bird out of paper brought you back to reality. It was a message from Draco.

“We need to find a place to meet. I miss you,” it said.

You thought a lot about this the last couple of days and you actually had an idea but certainly Draco wouldn”t like that at all.

He is going to freak out.

“We could meet at Hagrid’s place.”

“What? Couldn’t you come up with a better plan?”

“No. Do you have a better idea?”

This boy is so dramatic.

“No..”

“Be there at 2pm.”

After you had finished your lessons and had some lunch you walked over to Hagrid’s place. By then it was 10 minutes before 2 o’clock. You knew Hagrid was very very friendly but asking him for that kind of favour still made you a little nervous. After knocking twice, he opened his door and welcomed you in.

“(Y/N), come in, sit down, I’ll make you a cup of tea! How are you?”

Yes, he was one of those few people who didn’t dislike you because you were dating Draco and you were very grateful of it.

“Hagrid, I have to ask you for a favour.”

“What is it?”

“I’m sure you heard of Umbridge’s strange rules..”

“Oh yes this woman is out of her mind!“

“Yes and erm.. you know that Draco and I are together but lately we couldn’t even talk to each other and..”

“You want to meet here?” Hagrid gave you a warm smile.

“Yes Hagrid, if this would be alright for you.”

“It’s up to your blonde boy (Y/N).. if he wants to come in here..”

“I think he is already standing outside now.“

“Let him in, let him in.”

You opened the door and Draco walked in very slowly and carefully.

“Make yourselves at home.. I err I have to do something in the forest..” 

“Thank you very much Hagrid!”

You gave Draco a little push so that he managed to mumble a little “thank you” to Hagrid. It was so obvious that he felt out of place. But as soon as Hagrid walked out and closed the door Draco took you in his arms and hugged you tightly.  

“I missed you so much!“

“I missed you too,” you stated as you breathed in his sweet scent. Draco gave you a kiss on the top of your head, moved down to your forehead and your cheeks. He practically pampered you with kisses all over your face. You held his hands tightly, enjoyed his presence and kissed him back.

You sat down, talked about how “bloody ridiculous” Umbridge was, how frustrating it was to sneak away from the Castle to be able to spend time together and how you missed each other.

All of a sudden Hagrid opened the door and made you realise how much time had already passed.

“Oh Hagrid, we were just about to leave,” you told him a little embarrassed. “Don’t worry (Y/N), you can come here any time you want!” Hagrid chuckled.

“Thank you again.”

You were just about to leave when Hagrid started speaking again: “(Y/N), Harry told me you already managed the Patronus charm. Congratulations on that!” Little did he know (or he probably forgot) that Draco didn’t know that you joined Dumbledore’s Army.  

Draco gave you a questioning and then a disappointed look.

“I should not have said that, I should not have said that!” Hagrid repeated panicking.

Draco turned around and quickly headed to the Hogwarts Castle.

“Draco wait!”

Of course he didn’t and you knew you messed up. The next couple of days Draco completely ignored you. He didn’t even look to your direction. You felt so upset and miserable about yourself that you didn’t go to practice with Dumbledore’s Army. You spent your days at the library trying to distract yourself from the latest incidents. You were just opening a book about Herbology when you heard some people entering the library. They sounded like Crabbe and Goyle.

Draco must be with them as well.

You turned around to the door and yes there he was. Draco walked in with Crabbe and Goyle to his left and right. You stood up not caring about being silent and walked up to him.

“We need to talk.”

“There is no need to talk,” Draco stated coldly.

“Draco I am sorry, please let me explain.”

“An explanation for keeping secrets from your boyfriend? I don’t think so.”

“Draco please.”

“We shouldn’t be talking anyways, I bet Umbridge is standing right around to corner to spy -”

“She is not here right now. I just saw her leave the Castle with Harry and Hermione.”

Draco was still not convinced so you decided to drag him out of the library to a quiet place.

“Draco I am sorry, I know it’s all my fault. I wanted to tell you but I was afraid you would freak out and I don’t know...”

“I just can’t believe you have been lying to me about this for days! Probably weeks! You spent time with POTTER while I was thinking you were studying with Luna, Cho or whoever!”

“It wasn’t about spending time with Harry and you know that Draco.”

“Don’t you trust me at all, (Y/N)?” His voice was very soft now, almost cracking. You could see his eyes watering.

Seeing him like this caused you to tear up as well. It clearly bothered him a lot.

“I trust you, please believe me. I love you so much and I am so sorry. I know how much you seem to dislike Harry and I didn’t want to stress you out. When I heard that they were going to practice the things we should actually learn in Umbridge’s class, I thought it would be a great opportunity and it’s important to -”

“Stop (Y/N), stop. I get it.”

“Does that mean you forgive me?“

“How can I not forgive you and... it’s my fault too. Your intentions were not bad and if I wasn’t such an idiot, you would have told me.” Draco sighed. “I will try to be more calm but just.. don’t lie to me again please.”

“Draco I promise you I won’t. I hope we can forget about that. Please just hold my hand.. I missed you so much.”

He gave you a tight hug before he took your hands in his smiling at you genuinely.

“By the way, Draco, don’t call yourself an idiot. You are not an idiot, you are just a little.. dramatic.. sometimes.”

“Thank you (Y/N), I love you too.” Draco rolled his eyes at you still giving you that irresistible smile of his.

Dear Northern Hemisphere First Year Teachers,

Hello from The Land of Academic Years That Line Up With Calendar Years Because We Are Not Savages! 

We’re currently a little over half way through our school year, which has been my first year with my own kidlets (I borrowed other teachers’ when they were sick/at PD for the last 6 months of last year). Please know that I feel your terror/nerves/pain/10,000 other emotions you’re having as the new school year starts. The last 6 months has been...long. And rewarding. And terrifying. And hard. And amazing. And exhausting. And hilarious. In light of this, here are some thoughts about your first year/things I wish people had told me before I started (it got long, and I didn’t want it to devour people’s dashes, so the actual useful part is after the jump).

Please accept now that you will be tired for a very large portion of the next year. I have never, ever been so tired in my whole life. And I have been tired pretty much every waking moment of my entire life. I just really like sleeping, okay? But the point is, it’s not just you. You’re effectively performing all day long. That’s HARD. It’s okay to be tired. There is no reason you can’t go to bed at 7:30 at night if you’re pretty much falling asleep standing up. No one is judging you. 

On a related note, there is no point having a beautifully planned lesson if you’re too exhausted from only getting 4 hours sleep to teach it properly. You can finish that lesson in the shower tomorrow morning. Or the car on the way to work. You cannot sleep in either of these places. You can, however, sleep at school if necessary. Places I have napped this year include my desk in the staff room; the bed in sick bay; and the pile of cushions in the reading corner in my classroom (that was actually a pretty good nap). Sometimes, that 20 minute nap at lunch time is the only thing standing between you and killing a child, and it’s worth taking it instead of spending 20 minutes marking.

Please accept that this is probably the last week or so that you will be properly healthy before school finishes for the year. I’m not saying that you will be SICK all year. I’m just saying that you won’t be WELL for a lot of it. I have had low grade sniffles since about week 3 of term 1, and I am not usually a person who gets sick that often. There are about a million different germs floating around schools, and your immune system won’t know how to cope with it. And you’re going to be tired, so it REALLY won’t know how to cope with it. And if you work with the tiny/small humans, you’re like, quadrupling the germiness. Echinacea, Garlic, Zinc & Vitamin C tablets will keep the worst of the germs at bay most of the time. Sometimes, you’ll still end up sick anyway, but really, that will happen once or twice a year in ANY job.

The kids will make you cry. In both the good way and the bad way. They will make you laugh until you’ve got tears streaming down your face and you can barely breathe. They will make your heart want to explode with love and happiness, but it can’t do that, so the explosion will come out your eyeballs instead. They will also frustrate you immensely, and don’t even get me started on their freaking parents. Just try not to bad cry in front of them, because they see it as a sign of weakness. The rest of the staff, however, have probably been there at some point, and will generally be very supportive. Sometimes, they’ll even pull all your homework booklets apart and reassemble them for you with the correct sheets in them when said homework is the reason you’re crying.

Lessons are wildly unpredictable. Some lessons will go EXACTLY as you plan, and it will be amazing. Some will not go at all how you plan, and it will be terrible. Some will go EXACTLY as you plan, and it will be terrible. Some will not go at all how you plan, and it will be amazing. Sometimes the lessons you spent hours on will be the ones that flop. The lesson that you make up on the spot when you discover that the librarian is out sick today and there’s no one to cover for them, so you suddenly have an unexpected 45 minutes to teach may be the best thing you teach all week. There will be days when you are teaching the kids about kinship in Indigenous Australian families and end up talking about how the water treatment process removes fish poop from the water for 10 minutes (any sort of poop will cause a 10 minute tangent. You just can’t always predict when they’ll somehow manage to work poop into the conversation). Just learn to roll with it, and always remember the kids don’t know what was in your program. They don’t know that there was another activity you planned on doing this lesson before they got caught up in this thing that was supposed to be a relatively minor part of the lesson and were having too much fun to ruin. They don’t know that you were planning on spending an extra 10 minutes on that activity, but they caught on so quickly that now you’re starting the next lesson early. It takes so much of the stress out of those situations when you realise that you can actually do more or less whatever you want AND THE KIDS WILL NEVER KNOW.

When you work with tiny/small children, any time can be story time. Lesson came up short? TIME FOR A STORY! Kids being ratty? I’M GOING TO READ TO YOU! You just had a stressful parent meeting and need a few minutes to get your shit back together, but you also have to be teaching right this second? WHO WOULD LIKE TO PICK A BOOK FOR ME TO READ THE CLASS? Similarly, if you’re tired and over it and CBF with a real lesson plan, The Magic School Bus is almost always acceptable, because it teaches science, but you can also treat it as a visual text for English. Or a study of narrative structure. And as a way of presenting factual information in a fictional text. And if you play it from your Netflix account, you used Netflix for work, and you can therefore claim part of your subscription as a tax deduction.*

It’s important to take time to be silly. Obviously, I can only speak as a teacher of the smalls, but I think this applies to the mediums, too. When you’re trying to focus on the million and one things required to be a good teacher, it can be very easy to get caught up in being serious. And sometimes you do need to be, because you ARE the adult in the room, and there are some topics that are actually serious. But silliness is also an important teaching tool. Did you know that it’s Very Likely that at some point today, Ms R will talk about puppies or unicorns? Were you aware that the soldier settlement scheme after WWI was actually one of the main contributing factors to The Emu Wars? Have you ever considered that Katniss Everdeen would be a better candidate for president of a country than Bruce Wayne (but weirdly enough, Batman would probably be at least on par with Katniss)? These are all things that I’ve actually taught kids at some point in the last year in relation to completely serious things that are actually on the syllabus. I love my Emu Wars lesson so much that I’ve taught it at least 5 times since I wrote it about 12 months ago, and it’s the lesson that the kids continually tell me they love and beg me to repeat. It teaches critical and creative thinking, as well as visual texts, and some tangential links to the history syllabus**. There are other, more serious lessons that teach all those same things to the same age group, but no one enjoys them as much. That lesson fixes even the shittiest of casual days on a year 5/6 class. BECAUSE WHO DOESN’T LOVE GETTING TO SAY “And we lost THAT battle because an emu came over to see what was going on in the car and got stuck in the steering wheel, and the army went ‘Yeah, nah, we are SUPER done right now.’ and retreated for the day.”

Educhums are the absolute greatest and they will help you with everything.  Many of them also have great stories about their dogs and/or offspring, and they have some of the best “You will not believe what the little shits in my class did today” stories I have ever heard. Which I realise are not directly related to teaching, but it’s always good to know when you’ve had a bad day. Because Avery Jones is the Best Good Boy, Mae is Top 2 Best Good Girls (Best Good Girl is currently napping next to me), Tomes’ Bebe says the most hilarious stuff (and has all the best Trash Truck stories), and Toddler Kaaay’s fashion sense is totally on point.

Anyone want to help me decide between these two jobs?

Long rambling read under here. Honestly, if you could read this and give me input, I��d be super grateful because I don’t know what I’m doing.

Option 1: dividing my time between two quite prestigious schools in Ljubljana

Pluses:

- I worked at one of these school last year so I know the ropes, get on with all of the staff and have the lesson plans ready; the students are awesome, no behavioural problems. I would have to prep well for work at the other school, but I don’t anticipate any difficulties in this area.

- Both schools are in the city I live in and transport is not a problem.

Minuses: 

- approx. 73% employment (40% at one and 33 at the other school), but intense

- two schools: while transport isn’t a problem, but having only 8 lessons/school per week means I’m going to be the in-and-out girl. (I’m worried about the impact on relationship-building, etc.) 

- stressful environment: both bosses are administrator-only types. The head I worked for last year is an awful communicator, walking-over-bodies-ambitious, basically she can make your life hell; also shows preferential treatment to some employees over others (so no support from above, but realistically, I don’t have that much to do with them on a day-to-day basis anyway).

- rewarding but psychologically very taxing work with special needs students. I’ve already worked with all of them last year and we’ve worked well together, but it’s honestly the most exhausting work I’ve ever done.

Option 2: new school in Jesenice

Pluses: 

- 100% employment, yay! Actually a heavy lesson load, but I’d be teaching 2 groups in 8th and 9th grade, so that cuts down on prep time.

- more of a ‘village’ school, so the kids/parents (according to the head) are great. 

- my own classroom. MY OWN CLASSROOM. I’ve had to move between lessons in all my jobs and honestly I am so excited about this.

- the fact that I’d have more lessons than usual means significantly less other extra work (hallway/lunch monitor, sub lessons, etc.)

Minuses:

- it’s about an hour by bus/train each day, so I’d spend approx. 3 hours/day just travelling. It will be a big problem in winter when everything will run super late, and might actually mean moving, which evens out the financial situation with job 1.

- all new lesson plans (books I haven’t worked with before) and minimum 5 lessons a day (I know to people working normal jobs this seems ridiculously little, but trust me, there’s prep, and the fact that during actual lessons, you need to be 100% on, all the time.)

PROSPECTS:

Because stuff is changing in our school system, the job I have at “Ljubljana 1″ is basically going to disappear in the next three years. I might get a few more lessons at “Ljubljana 2″ over the years, because there are more kids in lower grades, but it’s not going to be anywhere near full time, so this will mean finding another school to work at - in time - anyway. 

In Jesenice, the position is technically open, however, the head’s already told me that they had a teacher there last year they were very happy with (she said this twice), who is on maternity leave this year. Reading between the lines, she’d get this permanent position after she comes back from maternity leave. So it’s the chances of me getting it are like 0.0001%.

So in both cases, I’d basically have to look for a new job next summer anyway, but overall, L1+L2 has a bit more security.

Day 364, 365. and 366

I knew my numbers would be off since I started the blog a few days after my injury, there was a leap day in there as well, and despite my best efforts may have missed a number or repeated one to. I am going to keep the numbering for now as I figure out how to move forward with this blog. I absolutely plan on continuing until the anniversary of my rehab graduation on a daily or semi daily basis as I have been. As you probably know Wednesday was the 1 year anniversary and I expected it to be an emotional day, it didn't dissapoint. The morning and early afternoon were difficult. I had decided a few weeks ago to do a recap of my year in what I was thinking would be one post. As I got into it and saw how long it was going to be and how much time it took to do I decided it would have to belittle posts over time. As my schedule worked out Wednesday was the only day with enough time to do this so I got up after the morning routine and for right at it. It took almost the entire time up to leaving for work to finish and it was emotional. It requires rereading the blog and pulling from it. That was very emotional. I have reread it a few times along the way especially the early days but this day had special signifigance. The process was stopped multiple times as I cried because of the brilliant writing. No that isn't it. It was the looking back over some difficult times on this imortant day. As I was done all I could do was lay in bed and cry before I had to leave and on this day Michele layed down next ro me and held me not saying really anything. There really wasn't anything to say we both knew the signifigance of the day am what it represented. I have done less of that lately. If I have a bad day where the pain is really high, or the bladder isn’t cooperating those are the days it hits me. In genral between work, Paraquad, busy social calender on the weekends, and Doctors I keep so busy it really helps distract. And on this day I righted myself literally and figuratively and got ready to go to work and distract. My work is good for that it requires quite a bit of attention to detail in preperation and a short time of extreme focus perfect for distraction. All this while continuing with some of the worst tone and stiffness I have experienced over the last year. On Thursday however there is a brief glimmer of hope on the issue of tone. One of my favorite things while inpatient in rehab was the FES bike. Since leaving rehab I hadn't seen one since until Paraquad and until I was done with my 12 week workout routine I didn’t have time. Once I finished and I got the Doctors permission I tried. The first time was excruciating the put electrodes and stimulate your muscles with electricity to get them to contract to get the legs to push the peddles what the PT thee called active stimulation. Anyway it was so painful and I couldn’t continue. So I tried it again on Thursday. The PT said to try and minimize the pain work harder try to visualize your legs pushing the pedals and work hard like you are pushing them. I did that and it did distract from the pain enough. I did get short bursts where my legs were pushing them when they didn't the PT or the PT intern pushed for me to keep them going. Three sets of 5 minutes each was exhausting but so worth it for the first time in I would say months the tone in my legs was gone. Before the last few months I would get high tone by the end of the day and after sleeping I would start fresh but lately I had been going to sleep with and waking up with it all day everyday. My legs are much easier to lift and manipulate without the tone. The increased tone is the primary reason I am not driving completely on my own already. It makes it difficult to transfer and the vehicle transfers are difficult without it. It lasted until the end of the day but it wasn't as bad later that night and into Friday when it returned. But Friday had it's own challenges. My bladder decided to not cooperate today. I wasn't making it even 2 hours without going.. It is distressing but while sitting straight up in a chair I use enough pads and things now to keep it from being devastating.. Today was a bad day for this problem as soon as I got in I had about 49 minutes of preproduction on top of my usual work preparing for the 5pm. Of course it started about the time I was scheduled to cath. Sure enough when I finally got into the bathroom the pads had soaked and I had to change them but they did their job and seemed to have prevented it from going anywhere else. A lesson I learned from a fellow wheeler at Paraquad just pad up and go. The problem is when I do pressure relief tilt backs and either am going or had gone already. Then gravity takes hold and it moves. Friday evening this was the case. Not sure how long it was this way before I noticed but I had wetted my side and back of my right side pants and even into my undershirt and shirt. This had sent me home before but it wasn't a good night to leave so I cleaned up the best I could and changed into another shirt from my emergency bag and continued on. Michele came and brought another shirt and some towels to put down around my back and thigh where the problem was to try and protect the skin. And some spray to try and help with the smell. It is a demoralizing thing to happen and an embarrassing thing. This while bad hadn't gotten to my seat which is it has in the past and that is when I just have to go. I can't mess with my skin on the very bottom. Skin and urine don't get along and I absolutely can't afford skin problems unless I like the thought of spending months confined to my bed which I don't by the way. Anyway despite the trials of this week I learned that with E-Stim there is hope of addressing the tone issue. Hopefully that will become a weekly thing and the PT said over time it will provide more and more relief from tone so there is a process to get that undecontrol and continue getting bettereveryday.

It’s a particularly beautiful day onParadise Island. The sun is bright, the breeze refreshing, the water extrasparkly.

Sar’ab has been given the task oftaking six-year-old Damian up a nearby rocky hill for the afternoon.

The sense of hearing completelysacrificed, in favor of sight (Sara’s eyes, half-lidded, drinking her in), ofsmell (Sara always smells of citrus, this time with sunscreen for goodmeasure), and of touch - Nyssa’s hand burying in sun-warmed hair, Sara’s softlips pressing against hers, Sara’s fingers at the knot of Nyssa’s pants, athrill tingling up her spin.

Sounds come rushing back, and asecond clunk is closely followed by a “Nice shot, Faris!” from down on thebeach.

Nyssa growls and stands abruptly, nowvisible to the offenders below. Sar’ab has the decency to look sheepish.Damian, a third rock in hand, smiles broadly and waves.

Sara laughs.

“He’s getting an extra round ofsparring tonight,” Nyssa murmurs to Sara, who is taking her sweet time gettingup. “Scratch that. They are both getting an extra round tonight.”

“Or,” Sara says lowly, waving toDamian as the boy jumps for her attention. “You could end at the usual time,send them off for a Japanese calligraphy lesson, and meet me back here to pickup where we left off.”

Azra is preternaturally brilliant,and that is definitely a challenge to parent. However, Sara will take that anyday over Soraya and her never-ending, supernova energy. She’s never met anotherthree-year-old who literally hangs from the rafters. (And why does thisvilla have so many rafters?) She’s never met another three-year-old whorequires an entire cadre of elite assassins to corral and amuse her and thenmanages to exhaust them all.

Soraya spent all day creating havocin the villa, and it still took Nyssa and Sara, together, over an hour to coaxher into sleep.

Thankfully, it seems to be one ofthose nights where Rocket has chosen to sleep with one of the children (Damian,tonight), so they don’t even need to worry about attempting to distract her sothat they may relax together after a stressful day.

“How could she stay awake so long?”Sara marvels as Nyssa applies her strong hands to knots in her back. “Shedidn’t even take a real nap.”

“If falling asleep on the awningoutside the kitchen does not count as a nap, then Soraya no longer naps,” Nyssacounters.

I'm 20 years old, and because of the stupidly hiked insurance prices I got into riding motorbikes as a way of getting around. I now commute around 20,000 miles a year and the weather is really getting to me. I love riding but forced riding is different. Last year I was insured on a cbr 600 (2000 model) for 1200 a year TPFT, and this year part ex'd it for a Suzuki Bandit (2008) which is around 700 a year. Both bikes are 0 no claims as I've never kept a bike long enough to accumulate any. Now I understand cars are bigger and cause more damage etc, but bikes are quick, really quick, but how can insurers justify the stupidly high priced insurance for me on a car? Minimum 2500 a year!? My brother has a ford fiesta, an old old G red model, hes 2 years younger than me, and has always wanted to drive so he's spent ages saving and working towards getting a car. Come his insurace quote, and they're asking for 1200 a year TPFT. The EXACT same details, address etc, just with my name, age, and job (electronics technician) I'm looking at around 3000 a year, same company, no change. Its really getting to me now. I have to convictions, no speeding penalties, nothing. I've lead life so far getting involved in zero trouble, I do things by the book. So I'm beginning to wonder what's up. My insurance prices are always double or more that of my families and friends cars, and coming up to winter, I really don't want to risk loosing my job a second year running because its too dangerous to venture out in the snow by bike (hourly paid, high staff turnover.) 17 year old car insurance?

Ive got a car and should (hopefully!) be passing my test soon but for reasons to complicated to list here lol I will only be able to drive it 2 weeks in easter time, 2 weeks in christmas time, 5 weeks around august and 4 days every 5 weeks, so by my bad maths thats just over 100 days. Anime Central, 2018: Day 1

I meant to get this one written sooner, but it’s been kind of an exhausting work week since A-Cen. Anyhow..if you need more of my A-Cen 2018 stuff...

So my schedule didn’t quite work out the way I thought it would this year. But that’s okay.  I spent the day as a Night Vale Girl Scout and @el-draco-bizarro and @someoldmemory were my troopmates. @lechevaliermalfet was Cecil Palmer of the Night Vale Community Radio Station. There are photos of us in the Day 1 cosplay post, or in this post from @el-draco-bizarro

Our group started off pretty much all together in the “Zen Cosplay: Cosplay made stress free!” panel. We were late, but that was okay. The goal of the panel was some basic cosplay education and tips for planning your cosplay effectively and efficiently. It was led by an awesome group of Over the Garden Wall cosplayers. 

I would say that for beginners or those without a lot of planning and/or crafting skills, this is a decent reference panel. It was also entertaining, which was good.

@lechevaliermalfet and I had to cut out early in order to get to “The Myths and Legends of Fate/Stay Night”

I hope this one comes back next year. This was pretty frickin’ great and I would happily sit through it again. @lechevaliermalfet got me into the Fate franchise, but I still don’t really know the myths and legends surrounding all of the characters yet.

So, if you weren’t aware...the Fate franchise involves some characters’ gender being altered because...well, reasons. No, really, I’m not 100% clear on those reasons but I think we can safely blame magic for part, and Merlin for a few parts.

I actually regretted ducking out of this one early for my next panel: “Fatal Frame: They Did What With A Camera?”

This is the second Fatal Frame panel I have tried to attend this year and while I stayed to the end and it suited me a bit better than the one at Anime Zap...it still was lacking for me. At this point, I don’t know what I’m actually looking for in panels on this franchise, since gameplay demos and storyline rundowns don’t seem to be doing it for me. And yet, despite the fact I am a complete wimp, I adore these games. 

I was introduced to them when one of my roommates in undergrad played through the first 3 over the course of the school year. Almost always at night, almost always with cursing and over-the-top dramatic flailing and mocking. @shbumi sometimes got in on the fun of watching her navigate the games and providing commentary. Anyway, I adore them, am too chickenshit to get far in them myself (though I own 1-3 for PS2 and the 3ds Spirit Camera spinoff), and just wanna squee over them with someone! But, apparently, not via panel, perhaps.

Moving on... I think we did this first, so I’m just going to put it here. Anime Central was helping promote Parasyte this year, so I participated. This is also how @lechevaliermalfet got a 3rd eye for his Cecil cosplay.

This year’s dealer’s room and artist alley felt better organized and had more breathing room than last year’s, I think. Things were still jam-packed in the best kind of way, though. 

It felt too weird to really take good notes on things I liked/disliked on that area, but I really probably should have. Instead, I walked away with a note on a title to check out from the Funimation booth. A note - but not a purchase. I have learned a lesson from dealer’s rooms over the years, including Anime Central’s: Unless it is harder to track down (limited editions, soundtracks, etc). it is almost always cheaper to buy somewhere else. 

They did move the chalk artist this year. I think that helped with the flow in the registration area, especially with the addition of lines for autograph tickets. But it also meant that when I was looking for him, he was harder to find! Maybe he was on the map and I missed it? I did find him eventually though.

Look at that! So much more space to maneuver and get around! You could actually walk close to an artist’s booth and still leave room for someone else to purchase a thing while you browsed! It was great!

And so many talented artists this year! @lechevaliermalfet spent a record amount and bought a shitton of art and stuff, which I will log at a later point because omg, I love it all.  @lechevaliermalfet and I then made our way into a guest panel: “Visual Novel Development and Q&A with Rosuuri”

It was interesting, and I’m curious about Rosuuri’s projects - but it really wasn’t for us. Neither of us are actually planning to develop a game or write for one or anything. We skipped out once the Q & A began to be a bit more technical.

I do believe dinner was then acquired. My timeline around meals / people watching / general downtime is sketchier, but oh wells.

I know that the next panel was “”Censorship in Japanese Anime and Manga: A View from the Frontlines”  

The panel started with a bit of a comparison of censorship in the US vs Japan. It delved into stuff I didn’t know, like that Japanese law can be suuuper vague on what qualifies as in need of censorship and sometimes it seems to just come down to what law enforcement thinks is right at the time. I also had no idea that the big comic markets in Japan will actually make people change into their cosplays once they are on-site, simply because there is a risk of offending someone outside the market because it happened before, ages ago.

This panel was also when I began to realize just how many notes I was taking in the Guidebook app. Side note in that I both love and hate this feature - if I wanted to add a new note for a new thing, I had to go into the “Notes” section and create it. Otherwise, any notes I tried to add from say, the relevant entry in the guide itself, would just get added to the original note.

Also, A-Cen rewtweeted my tweet about being excited for this panel. So there’s that too.  Really, this is one that I think needs to come back. It was informative, useful, and I liked it. It was in that weird time frame of being around my normal dinner time and where I was wearing down a little from the day, so sometimes my focus was off. That’s the one downside to the more “academic” panels being later in the day, though I imagine that’s when more adults will actually make it to them.

From there, we raced off to the video game area to kill time and Oh. My. God. I didn’t think Anime Central could improve on that room over last years, but they totally did! I really, really hope that they use that area again this year - last year’s was nice, but I am kinda glad that a prom had it booked this year. My only complaint was how the noise wasn’t easily contained but otherwise...I loved how much room there was, since it made divisions between the areas clearer. As I have done before - and maybe this should become a new goal? - I dabbled in a game or two that I didn’t know. Then I challenged @lechevaliermalfet to Space Invaders and yay! I did better than he did!

The highlight of the day, however, was our grand finale. First, we had to navigate the packed lobby of the Hyatt:

And then we got in line for “Anime Hell” There were several entertaining slides while we waited, including ones featuring a race:

I rooted for Godzilla & Porg, but it was not meant to be.

For those not in the know - and we definitely weren’t! - “Anime Hell” is a mish-mash of Japanese commercials, cartoon clips, and just plain old weirdness. @lechevaliermalfet and I figured that perhaps it would be like “AMV Hell” and it was in that things were balls-to-the-wall weird, goofy, entertaining, etc. But it was more live-action oriented.

My notes from this were mostly comments on my friends’ reactions or my own, and making note of what really made us laugh.I have a note that says I need to check out Chargeman Ken - likely to see if the stuff we were shown was just as bonkers as the subtitles made it appear to be or not.

It’s how a gummy ad became a group meme for us. I think we might be making this a tradition in the future. 

There was a “Midnight Madness” follow-up in the same room, but we didn’t stay for that. It was midnight and I think everyone was a little bit sleepy and just worn out.  And that was Day 1!
