Hello! After having some time to get over my loss for the Pokemon TCG Illustration contest, I decided to write up a small blog entry about the process and include some WIP pictures. Feel free to look below if you want to read my ramblings on the process.

Idea Generarion-

So coming into this contest, I knew I wanted to make a mixed media piece. In terms of theming I chose something that not only reflected a “magical moment” for a Pokemon (in this case meeting a legendary Pokemon), but also a moment when playing the games myself. In fact this piece was inspired by my awe when I first encountered a box legendary in game, as before I thought my teacher was lying to me when he said you can catch the legendary on the box!

This is the concept sketch that started it all! At the time my main concern was getting ideas down and seeing how they looked. Thinking about things like how would the composition would look, how would the colours look. So on and so forth.

I didn’t want to focus too much on the sketch and wanted to start making the physical object, so out of some cheap paper I started making a set up testing out size, scale, composition. I didn’t want to get too attached to the original sketches only to realise I couldn’t make it in real life… I went though a few drafts trying to get things right, slowly adding in aspects such as background objects and higher quality drawings.

After completing the draft I bought the images back into procreate to experiment with colours. This is the point where I made the mistake of thinking I had plenty of colours to choose from, not realising I would be limited by what I could buy from various yarn shops. That or hope I could find the right colour online, but that was always a gamble. If I don’t stop talking about this now I’ll get sidetracked talking about how much I miss yarn shops…

Anyways, I cut out the individual pieces that I would make within the background and used them as a guide for crochet assets. For this part I wanted to use different stitches to create textures such as the ripple stitch, bobble stich and some cable stitches, I feel bad as I never took any work in progress photo so of them. Let’s pretend you’re looking at a photo of a half finished crochet abstract shape.

Finally onto the main event, the Pikachu (and Suicune). The decision to make Pikachu a plush was based on what I would have liked to make for the 2022 illustration contest (if I wasn’t geographically challenged!!) Despite being British I decided it would be fun to make anyways, so I could experiment. I never got around to that but decided it would be fun to try for this edition.

Making the pattern was HARD! As I wanted Pikachu to have a unique pose, I had to work out different methods to plush i’ve made in the past which have been somewhat relaxed in their posing. I ultimately ended up making each part individually, pinning it together and then making adjustments as needed. It didn’t start out great however I ended up with this weird Pikachu shaped thing that did the job. Throughout this process I would regularly photograph it in the background to try and catch any issues early on. For example if the ground needed to be a different shape.

Photographing the final price was interesting. I felt bad for my partner as I essentially turned my dining table into a mini photography studio! I spent several days waiting for different lighting opportunities and experimenting with different light. Marking down different camera angles to ensure I have all of my bases covered. I easily took over 100 photos to get the perfect shot! In the below photo you can see washi tape being used to rest out different positions for the sculptures.

And that leads me to the peice! Even though i’m sad I didn’t make the top 300, I am pleased with the work I did for this piece (and my flygon entry too!). I’m glad I decided to experiment with ts peice and look forward to refining my methods in the near future!

Wait, quick idea! Twilight looks like the only hylian in his village because everyone else has round ears, so what if he wasn’t as surprised as the others to see their human companion so resilient, but still fairly impressed because of the fact that most if not all people in his village don’t put themselves in as drastic situations as the reader? Or is this just humans from our world?

to reiterate what i said up there, in case u skipped it for the bullet points,

i like the headcanon he knows humans, knows some of their quirks, and how they were the first ppl the other hylian villagers called on to help stuck cows or downed wagons, lots of heavy lifting stuff

but he really hasnt seen the extent of real humans, bc the humans who were in Ordon, well, they lived in hylian society,

why would they need the adrenaline to lift a car when hylians have set up whole tools and systems in all their towns to help lift just a full bucket of water out of the well??

not to mention, i think all the humans in his village were older adults? like at least not the age theyd be doing things like parkour or going to any trampoline parks type of age,

id imagine its more like stories talked about amongst hylians how hard humans can go, and even the humans themselves talked abt things like,

“well compared to u hylians, we have stomachs made of molten lava to you guys really, but we never have to use it, bc u know hylian food works just fine”

when Twi asked they would say stuff like that, but as soon as he saw ur human ass just picking wildflowers and berries off the side of the road to snack on? even random grasses/vines at some point (kudzu)?? easily eating Wild’s Dubious Food that's DEFINITELY got monster parts in it???! gnawing on the bone of a cucco and it just breaks??!!! and you look surprised too, thank fuck finally a normal reaction from u- oh my goddesses u were just curious (damn the elders were right abt human curiosity too) **and are now sucking out the marrow and eating the bone-!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twilight’s perspective of you is actually the equivalent of like, reading stories about vampires all ur life, then this new friend you made starts to get allergic to garlic, crave blood, has crazy strength and advanced senses, etc

and he’s just watching those honest-to-Hylia human mythological feats play out in real time in front of him, like he’s the only self-aware character in the story that immediately clocks the really obvious vampire as a vampire lmao

is the first to either 1. start choking on his laugh as he theoretically knows ur about to jump on the back of a lynel/hinox to ride it around and watch as the others come to the same conclusion OR 2. try to Stop you from jumping on said big monster in an attempt to ride it around bc he gets used to ur human BS quicker than the others and can see it coming a mile away now lol

abt both Twi’s shock at you eating peppers like a god has come down from the sky to prove their immortality,

(that rlly just come off as kind of cryptid statements abt u/humanity, or don't apply in this scenario bc ur only comparison is Earth Rules, which honestly scare every single fucking one of them in the same way as walking on Ganon’s lawn or something, like straight up view ur home planet as enemy territory, the Amazon jungle, the Hyrule wilds if you will-)

Twilight also gets involuntarily volunteered for human-sitting duty too

tbh the only person Not allowed on human-sitting duty, when u guys go new areas esp, is Wild/Hyrule

firstly, YES the way people portray scout(and pyro) as kids is so stupid

you see the only silly and mocking side of him when he laughs at his enemies during the battle and does stupid things just like every other man of his age(yes adults may act silly and make dumb mistakes too) so you assume that he is an immature and childish teenage boy that can't handle anything without being guided by older men around him?

scout also has father issues but that does not make him a damn child in the company of adults as an adult can also have father issues / mother issues if you didn't know + the fact that he loves his mother does not make him a baby boy as well, after all sniper loves his mother too and he is(almost?) of the same age as scout, he is just less active during fights and more silent, but no one sees him as a child :))))

i am not even talking about how you people call scout twink when his body is literally athletic, but not muscular and his age is close to 30, like seriously, there are no twinks in this team calm down already + the ranks are shit.

and don't get me started on the fandom's view of spy, how they call him the main villain of the story because he left scout and his mother, although he LOVES scout's mother and CARES for his son, he REGRETS not being able to raise jeremy in past

you can see how he calms this child, probably missing this time when his own son was in this age, realising that he will never go back to this time and make it up, trying to nurture someone else's boy instead

and this literally shows that spy regrets not telling his son how proud he is

Father's Day

If anybody had noticed that Jason seemed to be more prickly whenever this time of the year comes around, nobody had the balls to confront him. The rise of violence in Crime Alley during the third Sunday every June, was widely known within Gotham City. Initially, some had thought it was some hate crime during pride month. However, this spike in violence only lasted within that particular Sunday, and not beyond it.

Jason who already woke up on the wrong side of the bed, finds an intruder in his base. His survival instincts kicking in mixed with his inherent rage, he pulled a gun out of his safety stash - and went to go confront the intruder. The figure was in Jason's small kitchen... cooking something, if the delicious smells were any indicator. He aimed his gun towards the figure, not wanting to take any chances -only to be met with the familiar gorgeous sight of Timothy Drake.

Tim was dressed in his Sunday's best, looking a run-of-the-mill Park Avenue Princess in his little mini sun dress and coiffed up-do. Tim finally looked at him, and the gun pointed directly at him, "I know you're happy to see me, but damn."

"What the hell, Babybird?!" Jason looked at a wall clock, it was around 1 p.m. "Aren't you supposed to be cozying up to Bruce in the manor?"

Tim gave him a grin as he finally finished cooking, "He has his own son to do that."

Jason shot him an unimpressed eyebrow as if he truly didn't believe Tim. "Fine, I gave Daddy a visit during brunch earlier, and gave him his gift for the day."

There's a cringe expression on Jason's face, "I can't fucking believe you actually call him daddy."

"Someone has to do it since most of you call him Bruce or B, and on the rare occasion, dad." Tim explained without missing a beat, "Let's not forget Damian's incessant calls for father."

"Doesn't seem necessary."

"Trust me, calling Bruce as my Daddy Dearest, has done a lot of good in this world."

"Still doesn't explain what the hell you're doing here."

It was Tim's turn to shoot him with an unimpressed expression. Truthfully, they had been spending more time together for the past year. It was an unusual development going from hating each other to genuinely enjoying each other's company. Jason doesn't know what triggered this development. maybe it was the fact that a year ago, they ended up spontaneously hate-fucking after a bad mission between them.

It was difficult to keep on hating Tim when he's all needy, warm and tight underneath Jason's body. This ended up becoming a habit between them, arguing then letting it all out in the bedroom. Gradually, the bickering and fights dwindled down, yet the sex between them never dissipated. Along the way, they also managed to get to know each other better, and Jason found that he really liked Tim. He really liked him.

Jason doesn't want to ruin the thing between them, so he held off from labels. In the back of his mind, he knew Tim was probably the one.

"I wanted to spend time with you." Tim answered so easily, as if he wasn't a cold-blooded killer, who had once tried to kill him. "Can we start eating now? I'm famished."

Jason sat down, and started devouring the meal Tim made for him, "Didn't you just say you had brunch with Bruce? Why are you still hungry?"

There was an unusual expression on Tim's face as he brushed off Jason's question, "My appetite's been crazy lately."

"Anyway, you Wayne boys, sure have a penchant for being needy." Tim said after a big bite, "Being demanding must run in the family."

Jason rolled his eyes, "I'm not a-"

"Save it, Jason." Tim interrupted. "You are a Wayne, his second son."

Jason dropped his utensils, "I'm not in the mood to play house today, Tim." Usually, Jason would love to bicker with Tim, but not today.

"What, so you could go do your annual Father's Day violence spike in Crime Alley?"

"You don't know what the hell you're talking about!" Jason's eyes started to turn emerald.

Suddenly, Tim hugged Jason's arm between his chest, grounding the older man. He then pleaded with those blue eyes, "Then explain it to me, please."

Jason had started to feel his rage dissipating, as he finally resigned to being vulnerable, "Bruce was the closest thing I had to a father, and he..." 'failed me' was unspoken, but understood by both men.

"It feels like this day is mocking me. I'll never have a father, I'll never know what it feels like. I thought I had once, but the universe was clearly playing tricks on me. It's not all out of jealousy and spite." Jason admitted, "I do what I do to ensure that all those other kids out there would still have their fathers. I know my methods are unusual, but at least I get results. These deadbeat dads are too scared to commit any crime today, which means they are forced to spend time with their father, for even just today."

Repressed tears started falling from his eyes, "So forgive me if I'm not in a celebratory mood."

Tim guided his upset figure to the couch "Do you think you'll ever feel differently about this day, Jason?"

"I don't know. God, I wish I could." Jason knew that healing wasn't exactly linear, "I'm not your responsibility, Timmy. I know I'm fucked up."

"That's not true. Of course, I'd care about you." Tim easily answered, "I love you."

Jason froze, this was the first time one of them vocalized and solidified this thing between them. Tim suddenly left the couch to get something from the kitchen. Jason assumed he left because Jason didn't say it back. When Tim returned, Jason grabbed both of his hands with his palm and looked directly at Tim, as if he was petrified of losing his chance with one of the only good things in his life, "I fucking love you, Babybird."

Tim slinked his way on top of Jason's lap, and wrapped him in a warm embrace. "We'll be here for the long ride, every step of the way."

We? Jason knew Tim meant well, but he's not ready to sing kumbaya with Bruce when they just had this breakthrough. "Listen, Tim, I'm not really ready to celebrate in the manor."

Tim laughed, "Who said anything about celebrating there?" Tim handed him a box with a positive pregnancy test in it, "Happy Father's Day, Jason."

Needless to say, that year was beginning of when Crime Alley had found no spikes in violence during Father's Day in years.

An insane, hyperactive, adventure hungry sibling who is almost a complete idiot, but usually succeeds through sheer willpower and a little dumb luck.

(Alternately, instead of Dipper and Mabel filling in for Huey and Dewey, you could use Stanley and Stanford as Louie and Huey, because Stanley is a schemey little guy, but Stanford doesn’t fit Huey quite as well.)

An insane hyperactive girl with a group of two friends, one is a stoic nerd girl. (Lena and Grenda don’t line up)

A host of minor villains leading up to a final boss that is seemingly unbeatable.

A surface level idiot who grows to be a better fighter throughout the series. He has a presumably Hispanic background and lives in a house with a woman who is a mother figure to him, and they would do anything for each other.

A random moment that I distinctly remember where a character bangs on their head and it makes a metallic sound. They then say something about how they have a metal plate in their head/their bones are metal.

The final boss likes to possess people. They also appear in dreams sometimes.

A villainous rendition of the intro that plays in an episode(s) centered around them.

A multi-part finale, bringing an untimely end to a kid’s show that is really good. At least it didn’t drag on forever, ruining its own reputation.

Bonus! A voice actor from a show that is also great, but is probably going to/did drag in for too long, that was created by Dan Harmon. (Justin Roiland from Rick and Morty and Jim Rash from Community) Both were immediately recognizable because of their very distinct voices that I recognized from the thing they were in.

Hi, I just saw your art of the snake and the pigeon with aromantic flags, and they look amazing! I thought that a pigeon done in the colours of the queerplatonic and/or oriented aroace flag would be adorable. Did you know that pigeons mate for life and often show affection to their partner by cuddling with each other and giving them light pecks around the neck and head? They also are apparently great parents, with both males and females taking care of the young, this load is shared almost equally between the sexes. Both parents build nests, sit on eggs, and lactate (well “pseudo-lactation” technically) to feed chicks. I just thought the idea of two pigeons in a qpr would be really cute.

Sorry for the ramble about pigeons, I just really like them.

here's a few more Deltarune Monsterswap Kris doodles, and this time I'll toss a handful of related headcanons and tidbits below the cut!

- Kris's origins are unknown prior to Asriel finding them digging around in trash cans in front of the house when they were tiny; they seemed to have been living on their own for a while, eating anything they could get their paws on and avoiding strangers. they might not remember their time on the streets, but they still have a habit of eating weird things-- even when they're not really hungry. if you offer it to them they WILL eat it, that is both a promise and a threat.

- they initially didn't like to communicate outside of a variety of dog noises, and for the first couple years the Dreemurrs weren't actually sure if they could talk at all. they still tend to prefer growls, barks, and whines though, since many sounds used in everyday speech are a bit difficult for them to make and their paws lack the dexterity(and 1 finger) for some sign language. they can still talk though with a bit of effort, and may write out responses or spell in ASL if they're struggling too much with pronunciation. they struggle worse when frustrated or upset due to trying to speak through a growl.

- more of Kris's behaviors carry over from dogs and wolves than just their sounds and appearance; seeing if Susie's head can fit in their mouth once they're pals isn't just a goofy joke (though it's definitely a goofy joke on her part). it's actually their weird attempt at nibbling like a wolf-- a sign of affection and friendliness. nobody in Hometown actually knows enough about wolves to pick up on that, though, so they don't try it with anyone other than Susie since they know she won't panic. she just thinks it's the silliest thing ever.

- Kris is actually a monster loosely based on 'el cadejo,' a mythical dog spirit from Central America. whereas dark-furred cadejos are believed to be malevolent and dangerous beings, white-furred ones are seen as benevolent protectors and guides. their color palette swap between dark and light world references this; in the light world they have dark brown and tan fur with red eyes, but in the dark world they're white and silver-furred with blue eyes. notably, the dark cadejo is also associated with the devil-- paralleling Kris's devil horns they wore as a child. and likewise, their benevolent side is associated with angels, in line with the 'angel' that may or may not be the Player.

something i think about a lot is how like. a lot of kinks within fic are no longer the character study they used to be. like its Just There. and therefore makes it weirdly….plain? or removed from the reason it was originally maybe taboo or NOT vanilla?

not to be like “back in my day…” but i’ve been in fandom spaces for like 10 or so years now? and i felt like awhile ago, you’d read a fic with a specific kink and it’d be like 60k+ and largely it was a study on the character(s) and why and how they’d have this kink. maybe if they denied it or were embarrassed or how they even can become comfortable with it. what circumstances would give them this desire.

the fic itself sometimes felt more like someone’s thesis on why these characters would have sex like this. but it kinda amped everything up? it gave it context and build up and conflict.

not to say its bad or that writers can’t also do the same in shorter fic. but ig i feel like now its mostly just. like the kink is Just There. and there’s not a huge justification for it—not that there always has to be!

this isn’t hate to anyone or anything in particular its more just me musing. ig sometimes i miss the days when character study type fics were very popular.

i've been wondering- what do you think of vash and ww's relationship to pain? do u have any thoughts on it??

cuz i was just thinking like. obviously they're both extremely resilient and don't care much if they get hurt in the process of achieving whatever, but like... as for the pain specifically, i have to wonder.

cuz i'm reading trimax for the first time and toward the end of the sand steamer mess kite basically asks if vash even feels pain. and i mean... he has to, since not that long ago he just hit the floor with a dramatic blood splatter lmao. but like.

is he just suppressing visible reactions? or does he just not feel pain unless it's above a certain level?

and i wanna know about ww too if you have thoughts, i just haven't gotten that far in trimax :')

forgive me if my wording is all over the place, i havent been very elegant in my words Lately, but i am always down to talk about specific shit involving vash and wolfwood,

if we're just talking physical pain, yeah, i think they feel pain normally!

For Vash, he is the master of repression throughout Trimax, so I think naturally, he keeps a strong face no matter the level of hurt, whether on the outside or inner. It's just in his nature to not allow others to worry about him by pulling through with a fake smile or in some cases, he feels like he deserves the pain inflicted on him so even if he's getting pulverized to shit or threatened against his life, he'd default to a silence as opposed to screaming in agony that might make people think he isn't feeling anything. It's probably also second nature for him to no longer yelp or cry at pain after the amount of years he's spent getting hurt, but i think this only applies if he isn't emotionally involved in a fight (which is rare, but it happens in ch. 38).

In terms of physical pain, he seems to feel it like how regular humans do. I've thrown together some examples where he goes owchie owchie owchie that aren't too spoilery:

The Emilio scene is kind of why I don't think he's just playing up the theatrics of feeling pain, though I do think he would on some occasion, especially since he roleplays with children all the time. Verbally saying "ow ow ow" could potentially be an instinctive reaction too or maybe a source of comfort. But yeah!! I think Vash has always been able to feel pain and it's not like being a plant has lessen his ability to do so. Any resilience built is tacked on due to him being alive for 100 years and being a guy with a clear painted bullseye on his entire figure that ends up getting him shot and scarred.

In the end, the pain that gets to Vash the most will always be on an emotional level rather than physical, but Vash is such a genuine person and so present when it comes to other people that even if it's a pain he can take, it'll still hurt him terribly in more ways than one.

For Wolfwood; I think in general, those under the Eye of Michael have a strong resilience to dealing with pain due to the regen potions and the amount of training forced on them. I don't think we ever get the full description of what exactly those in EoM endured throughout their younger years, but we saw WW get shot at an early age in chapter 12 and we can assume it happened more than once. Over and over again until he won't even flinch against it just like how killing without hesitation was attempted to be drilled into him. I don't really know how it works scientifically… but I fully believe that he's mostly numbed to the physical sensation of it and it's the psychological part that gets to him more. Wolfwood himself is a naturally skilled fighter too, not that that really has anything to do with his dealing with pain, but I think his focus and attention on a battle and his stubbornness to win kicks an adrenaline that allows him to ignore the pain.

Though, his body also gets sore and tired just like any regular human does and there's this instance where he goes owie too:

(While NOT as much as Tristamp WW does where he's cracking a cold one every goddamn minute, I do think Trimax WW has gotten used to taking regen pots and thus, can afford to be careless and not give a damn.)

So, physically, technically in canon, they don't really have anything that specially makes either of them unable to feel pain, but just as you said, they're incredibly resilient. And ultimately, the both of them are affected emotionally/psychologically that hurts them more than the physical aspect of it, considering how physical pain is almost a daily chore for them to deal with (Vash being hunted for sport for majority of his life + Wolfwood being involved in experiments/killings for majority of his life.)

I think Trigun in general, while showing physical pain being a strong factor of hurt for regular people like us constantly seeing civiilians get beat up or shot, it tends to boil down to the multiple varieties of pain when it comes to those who deal with physical pain often (Gung Hos, Vash, EoM members).

I didn't know where to put these comments but here are extra thoughts:

They're both evidently really good at hiding their pains or any mark of vulnerability. They both could have a hole in their chest and go days without anyone else noticing so long it isn't killing them.

They're both pretty reckless during battle, but I think for Vash, he already tries to avoid violence at all cost and thus, do in a roundabout way lessen his own chance of getting hit in hoping to not stir that violence against another. As a result, I think Wolfwood can be way more reckless and ends up getting hurt more unnecessarily as a result of it.

They both are capable of healing at quick rates so I'm sure that allows the pain to feel more temporary, less of a risk to sustain, and to further hone in not caring too much about getting shot. That only applies for themselves individually though because every time they see each other get hurt, they're always so so worried despite knowing the other will be fine.

My voice is a goldfish grown up in a too-small bowl, plucked from the pond and moved behind glass walls. I was told my voice was too old and too low. I bound it up in a higher pitch until it wasn't worth comment and now it has settled too small. It's beautiful--still-- but not in its trembles of pitch or its consonants that blur or the Rs that still rumble with a lost potential roar. My voice is beautiful in its golden light.
