Hoverflies: The Tiny Heroes of Your Garden
Did you know that hoverflies can be your garden's secret weapon against pests?
These small but mighty insects not only help to pollinate your plants, but their larvae are also natural predators of aphids and other harmful insects.
By welcoming hoverflies into your garden, you can reduce your reliance on chemical pesticides and create a healthier, more sustainable environment for your plants. Plus, watching these little hoverers in action can be quite mesmerizing!
So next time you see a hoverfly buzzing around your flowers, give them a little nod of appreciation. They may be tiny, but they're definitely heroes in your garden.

Scenes From My Walk - Common Loopwing Aphideater This Is Certainly An Interesting Insect Although I know it’s a little too “creepy crawly” for some. #ScenesFromMyWalk #CommonLoopwingAphideater #Aphideater #FlyingInsect #HoveringFly #Insects (at Agua Fria, New Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXCmezuLWHR/?utm_medium=tumblr

What I believe to be a Pine Ladybird (Exochomus quadripustulatus) having a little rest on a Mahonia leaf. The ‘flange’ on the edge of the wing casings is a key to identification and point of amusement. #insect #beneficialinsects #ladybird #ladybug #pineladybird #exochomusquadripustulatus #Exochomus #aphideater #mahonia #plant #uknative #uknativeinsect (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CANtusYAvQw/?igshid=1gw1l32mbu77q

Saw a beautiful hoverfly at work the other day ☺️ Eupeodes volucris I believe? (In southwestern New Mexico)
Very cute little friend! And yes, looks like a large-tailed aphideater, Eupeodes volucris :) Despite the name, adults don't eat aphids, but the larvae do!

@orevet submitted: found this little guy foraging for plants in the Bronx, NY! the pointy end is the head, I've never seen anything like it.
It's a syrphid fly larva! It'll turn into a nice little hover fly. And it was not foraging for plants, but rather looking for delicious bugs to nibble. This one in particular is an aphideater in the genus Eupeodes, likely Eupeodes americanus, so you can guess what they want to nibble (spoiler: it's aphids). Adults look like this:
:) Cute. Photos by susanna_h
