arcana wildcraft- murder ballad blues
immediately in the bottle AND on my skin i get the blackberries and the violets. the earthy note comes through on the drydown which grounds it and keeps it from being TOO fruity. sad that this is discontinued but not TERRIBLY sad- it's not really my specific thing. i do like it though!

for christmas my love bought me some samples from indie fragrance houses and then full sized a few of my favourites for my birthday. i’m so very excited for them to arrive!!
Holy Terror - Arcana Wildcraft - “There are utterly somber and fearsome spirits which are known to haunt certain long-deserted chapels, monasteries, and abbeys. An unsettling, austere blend of burning frankincense, sandalwood, deep myrrh, and dusty beeswax candles.”
this will easily become the signature scent for both myself and my love. we loved it in the bottle, and even more on skin. it really does smell just like a dusty old church, the beeswax candles are sweet and it has that distinct smoke of candles just blown out. the resinous incense is scrumptious and it is at once atmospheric while being completely wearable.
The Honored Ghosts - Alkemia - “An offering of Earl Grey tea, black raspberry creams, rosewater-saffron syrup, cinnamon honey, white amber, and vanilla incense.”
i wasn’t sure about the black raspberry note at first, but this is such a delicious fruity, creamy tea and the cinnamon and vanilla incense are so lovely that i often find myself craving the scent. for me it evokes images of sitting in the garden drinking tea from a pretty vintage teacup with little purple violets or pansies on it.
Cemetery Tour - The Strange South - “Osmanthus, crumbling stone, brick dust, moss, and graveyard dirt.”
i don’t usually enjoy florals on myself, and i don’t get the graveyard dirt in this at all which i was most excited for, but i absolutely love this scent. it is such a soft, sweet, dusty white floral, reminiscent of memorial or funerary flowers. it feels delicate and beautifully melancholic.

picked a SOTD finally!
arcana wildcraft’s You lie in all my many thoughts, like Light: The scent of succor from a cup of black English tea with warm bread, blood oranges, tangerines, clementines, ripe apricots, and a glowing sunrise.
this was a GWP freebie many moons ago. probably in 2017? and i don’t think it’s ever been rereleased, which is a shame, because it’s one of my favorite perfumes and i feel bad talking about something that’s next to impossible to get.
this perfume is a lovely warm weather scent. lots of citrus with smooth black tea, backed by subtle fluffy bread. it smells both simple and complicated at the same time, which is the zone i think arcana does their best work in. it has good longevity and a decent throw, though it being mostly citrus means it shouldn’t offend anyone. except for cats. sorry to coconut, my own cat, who hates citrus.
i’ve called this perfume the summer version of sixteen92′s Sarah Good (though beware s92 these days, they’ve been not filling orders) if that helps give an idea what it smells like. they both share the bread and citrus, though sarah good has mild smoke and maple leaves and you lie in all my many thoughts has tea. the bread note also feels similar to arcana’s Pumpkins Crave Bread, though it’s more subtle here. it’s mostly tea and citrus.

I’m sorry this is out of nowhere but do you have indie perfume recs? I’ve been trying to get into that. I want to smell scary. like a hungry siren, or like sickly sweet poison. But also all your faves too please! Thank you so much!
Oh, I love this question! Indie shops are like...my happy place. My addiction, perhaps?
The indie perfume world is wild and deep. I've been in it for a few years, so my taste in perfume has changed, along with the houses I 'vibe' with.
I will start with the 'easiest' for newcomers to get into. When I say 'easy' it is because they break out scent profiles, styles, and also make it easy to sample at a lower cost. The more advanced houses will be expensive, riskier with high reward, and you must know your style deeply before you attempt buying from them...because your wallet will eventually hurt otherwise XD
The breakdown below the cut, because I am long-winded, I am sorry.
Most people start with Alkemia Perfumes. I started here, even though I eventually decided the perfume oil base didn't actually work for me (after I had an absolute blast trying over 20+ samples over a few months. The fun was worth it. Getting scents in the mail is self-care, I tell ya.). You can sample 5 different scents of your choice for $18. The nice thing about this brand is they really break down scent types, which will help you elsewhere. They break it down by 'aquatics, spices, sweets, earthy, incensy, florals, vanillas, etc. in their 'explore our perfumes' section. A lot of people recommend their 'Ghost Fire' from them (I've never tried it). I personally like 'The Honored Ghosts' & 'Misdeeds After Midnight' (but misdeeds was limited collection sadly). Typically, the 'scary' scents will be earthy / incensy / red musk / resinous styled scents.
Andromeda's Curse is another very easy to sample house, but on Etsy. I had fun trying them, but found the longevity to be light on my skin, which annoys me. You will find that indie oils tend to be lighter throw than alcohol fragrances (though can last on your skin for 8+ hours), but some very expensive oils are just as powerful. For $13 you can sample 5 scents here. Try different notes & styles and keep a journal of what worked and what didn't. You will soon find that there is a 'death note' that you NEVER get along with, therefore you must avoid most perfumes with it haha. My death note is typically patchouli and anything overly floral. White Tea is also a note I can't wear, I despise it.
This all being said...where do I actually shop? Nocturne Alchemy. This house is NOT easy to get into and often you need someone to help you understand their catalogue (which I am happy to do). It is pricy and also has a wild amount of Limited Editions (scents that only come back 2 years in a row seasonally and disappear forever...I typically buy these). I vibe with this house. It's my scent style and works on my skin. I love dark vanillas, spices, resinous fruits, and honeyed ambers and this house goes beyond all this and more.
Nocturne Alchemy / NAVA is known for their ambers & resins and I can say I love their Queen Amber, Celestial Amber, Princess Amber, and their Sky Amber. All fabulous, though Queen Amber is considered 'intimidating' due to the heavy mix of thick honey / incense / ambered musk. It's basically aggressive woman walking into a room. My husband likes it on me, so whatevs, I dig it. I'm a honey fan, so I search out honey scents LOL. You may lean towards their Anubis Garden & Desecrated Tomb collections, as they are very dark and powerful...NAVA has a huge collection of various scent profiles, if you have more questions on them, feel free to comment and ask. I've tried...a lot...of their scents...T.T
I will also recommend Arcana Wildcraft & Arcana Craves. They are both owned by the same person, but Wildcraft is a bit more...complex? Eerie? I don't get along with most scents from there, but I do get along with the Craves lineup because I love interesting gourmands. Pumpkins Crave Black Swallowers is basically a drunken goth pumpkin bread, boozed up, smoking a clove cigarette on Halloween outside a goth club in the 90s. Pumpkins Crave Resins is one I also like...fresh pumpkin bread and heavy black amber, but also a bit boozy with something heavy, maybe the labdanum {notes being: Gilded amber, black amber, 10 year old labdanum absolute, black tea, and boozy golden gourd} I've tried a bunch of scents from Craves and most are a lot of fun, but on the gourmand side. I love their Honey & Vanilla catalogues.
You might also want to glance at BPAL, as they have a strong, eerie/unique/goth theme to them. I don't get along with most of their oils, but I do like some of them and they are very popular! Snake Oil {vintage patchouli and dark, rich, aged vanilla absolute. deep, rich, earthy notes swirled with vegetal musks, sugared vanilla bean, and dark spices} has a cult following, people age it for years they love it so much. Personally, I didn't like it, too much dark patchouli for my tastes, but I did like the other version Scream Inside Your Snake Oil because it was the original but mixed with funnel cake...so...vaguely sweeter LOL. I do also like their Bobbing For Snake Oil scent {apples crushed into vintage patchouli, dark, rich, aged vanilla absolute, vegetal musk, and spices}.
Hexennacht is a house that has a very strong catalogue. I've loved so much from it, but eventually couldn't justify buying after personally witnessing the owner out a customer's purchasing history in a facebook group fight T.T That being said, the products are great and they once had a scent called 'Necromancer' that literally smelled like a bad man making bad life choices, but like, with a lot of money involved. 'Hēdonē' is one of the scents I like, I was told I smelled like sexy incense while wearing it. You can sample all scents from this shop (and other shops!) at Ajevie, a decanter who provides samples of multiple houses. They are closed until January 11th at this time, but when they open you will be able to see all the samples they offer. You might be interested in 'Fallen Angel' - rain-soaked granite, mountain air, petrichor, creeping ivy, damp earth. This is atmospheric and smells like being on a mountain in the middle of a rainstorm.
Pulp Fragrance is also closed for break right now, but they have a scent called 'Hallowed Ground' that literally smells like walking in a graveyard and it is terrifying LOL (notes being: Rich soil, damp air, slowly decaying wood, black honey, dark chocolate, soft moss, and a thread of precious resin incense smoke)
There are sooooo many houses I can tell you about, but these are the most popular and reliable ones you will see.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to clarify anything! The Indie world is huge and there is so much to learn, it's a fun journey and I hope you have a blast (though there will definitely be times that you will smell things and go OH NO WTF IS THIS? NAST AF!)
I will also suggest r/indiemakeupandmore on Reddit. I don't know much about 'Reddit life' aside from this sub, because it is full of the greatest people ever who simply want to talk about indie perfume recs, experiences, new shops, indie perfume/makeup/skincare/candles/candy/coffee, etc.
Also. Off topic, but if you are looking for more indie products, I recently discovered Lollies By Leah and I can tell you that I was mindblow by these lollypops. WTF. I don't even really like candy, I was gifted these, but now I'm thinking of buying a subscription box because this month's theme is Fairy Tale lollies and these things are WILD.
I even get into indie soaps and skincare. It's a thing T.T If you get dry hands in winter, Haus of Gloi has spectacular pumpkin butter cream, OMG, my whole family buys it. Literally. My. Whole. Family.
*also, more shops listed in the comments.

Arcana Wildcraft's Hel's Belles Collection
The brilliant, kind, and generally lovely Julia of Arcana Wildcraft has created a truly special collection of scents inspired by several revered goddesses and figures of the Norse pantheon, cheekily name Hel’s Belles. It’s a beautiful and dynamic collection, showcasing a wide variety of scents that is sure to offer something suitable for all tastes.
Tumblr media
Freyja
Scent description: Beautiful Freyja welcomed the souls of fallen Viking warriors to the afterlife. Golden amber, delicate sea water, astringent white grapefruit, dream poppyseed, and a hint of hemlock spruce.
Freyja has been a beloved scent of mine for years, and I’m so glad that it was rereleased with this collection. Simply put, this is a wonderful and realistic grapefruit blend. Often in perfumes, grapefruit is sugared, but here it is tart and realistic, with lots of zest. This is a cleanness to this scent—with a hint of salt and freshness from the sea water. The sea breeze carries the scent of fresh, delicate fir needles. This scent seems to glow, which may be the effects of the amber, which also brings a hint of sweetness. Freyja is truly gorgeous and is a must-try.
Tumblr media
Frigg
Scent description: As beloved queen of the Norse pantheon, Frigg sees into all of the nine worlds and presides over magical powers, motherhood, and marriage. Black tonka bean, raw cashmere wool, French bakery vanilla, soft warm skin, confectionery sugar, and sweet almond.
Frigg smells like warm, clean wool and fluffy, gently-sweetened cream. It’s an atmospheric blend that evokes the cozy feeling of lying in fluffy, clean bed (with a down comforter!) in a busy cottage in winter. The cottage is bustling with baking and laundry, and warmed by the glow of a central hearth. Frigg dries down to a softly-sweetened cream and warm, clean skin. This is so very comforting, but also elegant.
Eir
Scent description: As a healer and guardian deity, Eir's areas of expertise are shamanic rituals, medicine, herbs, and childbirth. A sheer veil of gentle Roman chamomile tea, wild lavender buds, vanilla bean, warm flannel, ivory patchouli, and fresh coconut milk infused with petals of tuberose and magnolia.
Ahhh Eir is so stunning and soothing! I’ve been wearing this one a lot. This is a sweet, mellow, lavender-forward scent with the gentlest, milkiest tuberose and creamy, natural magnolia. The florals here are not harsh, but are sweet, creamy, and heady, just like the real thing. There’s some wild grassiness in the background, likely from the chamomile. This is lunar in feel, and one that I will reach for often!
Lofn
Scent description: The gentle patron of comfort, sweetness, fun, and forbidden love. A single dewy rose rests on a bed of bright violet blossoms, silky velvet, purple iris petals, orris root, apple peel, the arc of a rainbow, and wild berry nectar.
This collection is so stunning that it’s hard to pick a favorite, but Lofn may be my favorite of the bunch! This smells like the best kind of berries—realistic, tart, and a little sweet. These could be blackberries, raspberries, or huckleberries. It smells sparkly and glittery—like a rainbow through a cloud with purple flecks of glitter. The violets are so beautiful and complement the berries so well—they’re a little sweet, a little earth, and soft and pillowy. With wear I begin to smell the rose, and it’s a velvety, deep red rose that gives this scent some serious oomph and elegance. My notes ask: “best thing I’ve ever smelled?” That about sums it up!
Idun
Scent description: The goddess of youth, spring, and renewal. Idun's magical apples keep the entire pantheon looking great and feeling young. Crisp pears and ripe pink apples dripping with juice, loamy black earth warmed by the sun, sacred lotus, young rosemary, fresh green clover, and a primeval forest of conifers: pine, spruce, and fir.
Idun is the scent of a sun-dappled, dew-speckled orchard of ripe apples and juicy pears. These fruits are utterly natural, and make for a simple scent that also somehow manages to paint the complex picture of the orchard in its entirety—fruit, trees, sunlight, dew, soil. This will be a great blend for the transition from summer to fall, and I imagine that it will be much beloved.
Tumblr media
Sjöfn
Scent description: A compassionate matron goddess who encourages lovers and brings harmony to all affectionate relationships. Chilled lemon cakes drizzled with vanilla icing, a profusion of hyacinth, lilac, and gardenia petals, creamy sandalwood, a soft pile of pillows, and a touch of carrot seed.
Sjöfn is the scent of my dream life! Sjöfn is the scent of warm, sweet lemon poundcake with a confectioner’s sugar glaze. There’s a gentle and magical clean linen scent and a breezy whisper of flowers. This is a comforting and beautiful blend, as if Julia bottled the scent of a late spring afternoon in a thatched cottage with the doors and windows flung open to welcome the fresh breeze, with clean sheets fluttering on the line, and freshly baked lemon cake on the table. By the end of the day Sjöfn settled into the scent of a moist lemon poundcake decorated with sugared flowers.
Nott
Scent description: For the feminine embodiment of night, a stunning amber accord (holy labdanum resin, midnight Madagascar vanilla, and sweet benzoin) is carefully aged, then sparked with rich black cardamom, a shot of vintage patchouli, and a dark trail of incense.
Nott is rich, slinky, dark, shimmering and resinous. This is the perfume equivalent of wearing swishing velvet robes on your way to a secret meeting in the moonlight. The patchouli in this blend is A+. It’s rich, smooth, dry, and is the perfect complement to the sticky sweetness of the benzoin and labdanum.
Rán
Scent description: The merciless goddess of the sea and the drowned dead. Underground caves filled with incense, tendrils of briny seaweed, slivers of amber emerging from salt-soaked earth, ocean-crashed rock, and damp blonde woods.
When I first opened the bottle of Rán I was greeted with a blast of fragrant seaweed. When applied to the skin, it is truly a stunning blend! Aquatic blends are one of the many areas in which Julia truly excels as a perfumer, and Rán is another beautiful example of that. There is a true sense of brine here, but it is natural and not overwhelming. This blend manages to be dark and atmospheric (think stone cliffs by the seaside), but also pretty and elegant. The amber note is rich and stunning, and I suspect that the incense used may be lightly floral. This is just gorgeous.
Valkyrie
Scent description: Odin's handmaidens who plunge bravely into battle and guide the glorious dead to an afterlife in Fólkvangr or Valhalla. A carpet of velvety green mosses with battered leather armor and a stout wooden shield. The sacred incense of the dead. Translucent tree resin and dry cedar heartwood.
Valkyrie, to my nose, smells of ships and old forests. It smells ancient and fragrant—there are precious woods, with hints of moss and salt—like a ship bearing a cargo of sandalwood. This scent is cozy, elegant, natural, and adventurous! In time I smell the smooth, soft, brown leather, which makes the blend smell even more expensive.

Absinthe - Arcana Wildcraft
Smells closer than the previous absinthe-inspired scent I tried. Still has maybe a little too much sweetness, but it doesn’t smell as much like candy. I like this one!

Note
it’s “indie” perfumes but i like chillum by arcana wildcraft (musk, leather/fur smell, cannabis note but not a pure weed smell) and baccante by alkemia (green patchouli, french lavender, natural blueberry). i know the first one sounds weird but it’s like. hugging a big fluffy animal in the forest. really pleasant
sounds really interesting, thank you! im just getting started with getting into perfumes and its an expensive interest and indie perfumes are both cheap and very unique so i appreciate the recommendation

Scent Headcanons
so my covid/quarantine experience has been marked mainly by two things: indie perfume and the magnus archives. to combine these two interests, I’ve decided to match the “scent vibes” of some magnus characters and the entities. scent headcanons I guess? if those weren’t a thing before they are now. scents that I’ve tried will be marked with a *.
The Institute Staff
Jon- Solstice Scents' Gibbon’s Boarding School: dusty wooden desks, paper, carefully hidden tobacco pouch, dying fire, dried leaves, leather chairs, autumn breeze
This scent really captures the “tired academic” aura of Jon, especially S1-S2. Not quite completely put together, but still surrounded by the scent of knowledge.
Martin- Stereoplasm's Lydia*: A uniquely transformative scent; opens with agrestic lavender and earl grey tea with snips of fresh fennel greens. A flood of soapy emerald green bubbles then rests softly into clean sunset musk.
Martin has a comforting, calming scent. He always, always smells like tea no matter what he wears or does. Hints of soap peak through as he tries to keep himself clean and put together, even if the world is about to end. The scent of someone who’s learned to pull himself together to be ready for everyone else.
Sasha- Alkemia's Old Books and Fresh Flowers*: Fresh neroli orange flowers and heliotrope blossoms pressed between the delicate paper pages of a leather-bound book
Boundless beauty and ancient knowledge in one scent. She’s always sorting through the archive’s resources and constantly smells like the ancient paper surrounding her.
Tim- alphamusk's Bardot*: Gorgeous badass goddess like musk that’s insanely irresistible. Notes of roses, woods, magnolias but all blended so effortlessly and meld together beautifully in this sexy magnetizing musk. Everyone who smells it loves it. Very femme. Iconic.
Who doesn’t love Tim at first sight? A sexy, charismatic, fingergun shooting bisexual who’s always ready to do what he needs to get things done. A scent that blurs the lines between gender fits him, and it’s sexy to match. Even when he’s at his lowest, he still draws you in.
Elias- Alkemia's Book of Shadows*: A biblichor of eldritch books - heavy parchment paper, ancient iron oak gall ink, crumbling leather bindings, and wafts of rare incenses
Jonah Magnus smells of all the cursed knowledge he’s acquired. The statements and ancient books he’s encountered leave their marks on him in scent. You can’t smell the underlying evil, but there’s a certain darkness that lives there.
Basira - Death and Floral’s Red string of fate: Red musk and black, burnt amber blended with golden honey and black molasses
I don’t have a good explanation for this, it just feels right.
Melanie- Death and Floral’s Half-hoping to be eaten by a bear: Woody, sweet bare skin; the lingering scent of dry leaves on a cold morning.
Melanie smells of her supernatural adventures and longing for something more.
Daisy- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Mr. Czernobog: Unfiltered cigarettes, the leather and metal of sledgehammers, aortal blood slowly drying, and black incense.
Daisy knows what she’s done. She’s a Hunter, and these smells follow her.
Peter Lukas- Arcana Wildcraft's Black Sand: The scent of a warm night on a dark, sandy beach. Atmospheric sweetness with a hint of salt air and a subtle undercurrent of danger. The richest amber resin, black coconut, coconut husks, and smoky vetiver.
The scent of the loneliest sailor. There’s a dangerous draw to him still, but you can tell you should keep your distance. (unless you’re Elias of course)
The Entities
The Buried- Alkemia’s St. Louis Cemetery #1: “An atmospheric brooding of Spanish moss, crumbling stone, old cement, red clay brick, and graveyard dirt.”
It’s not quite burying you, but it’s about to. You won’t be able to tell that it will until it’s too late.
The Corruption- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Elli’s Song: “The horrors of entropy, death, and decay: desiccated black mosses, vetiver, olibanum, patchouli, and ashes.”
Rotting. Decay. The disgusting decomposition of all things.
The Dark- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Event Horizon: “A disconcerting scent, heavy and oppressive, through which no light, no matter, and no spirit can escape. Black opium, labdanum, opoponax, black orchid, and benzoin.”
Pretty self-explanatory. Complete and utter darkness.
The Desolation- Arcana Wildcraft's Devilish: “Shaking off vanilla's reputation for namby pambyness, this infernally dark and smoky fragrance comes complete with licks of fire and sulfurous wafts of brimstone. The devil really does have all the best scents.”
Was it worth it? The meaningful life you lived? Was it worth meeting this fiery end? A scent to match the end of a life worthwhile.
The End- Alkemia's Dustsceawung: “Dustsceawung is the contemplation of dust, worldly desires, and the ephemerality of all things... raspings that were once a tree, ruins that were once cities, bones that were once lovers. Dust is always the ultimate destination on our journey. The scent of forbidden explorations and an olfactory meditation on dust... attic air, the inside of old trunks, abandoned haylofts, library stacks, and abandoned buildings.”
The death of all things. Everything must succumb to its true form: dust. No matter what you fear, no matter how accomplished you are, no matter what you’ve planned, it will come for all. This scent carries the dust of those already ended, a reminder of your fate.
The Extinction- Alkemia's Deus Ex Machina: “An olfactory portrait of industrial decay and the fallen gods of age of disruption, innovation, and technological revolution... fire hardened steel, rusted iron, motor oil, wet cement, burnt copper wires, and grey amber.”
Mankind has brought itself to the edge. All that it has created is what finally destroys it. Remnants of industry linger, all that’s left of humanity’s monstrosity.
The Eye- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's The Book: “Old, yellowed parchment paper, tattered leather bindings. There’s a distinct warmth to the scent, though it is ancient and brittle.”
All knowledge lives here. It has watched you your entire life. It knows everything about you, everything about everyone, everything about everyone that has lived. Pages and pages and pages of its stronghold live in the institutes.
The Flesh- Arcana Wildcraft’s Edward Hyde: “A depraved mix of dirt, blood red musk, roasted meat accord, acrid yellow musk, salt, and an odd hint of expensive men’s cologne.”
Meat. Meat. Meat. Meat is meat. A meaty scent that marks the servants of the flesh.
The Hunt- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Berzerker: “Thick furs, strips of leather, and a blood-stained axe with crushed poplar bud and juniper”
The Hunt is never over. Once you get a taste of blood, there is no going back. Furs of a predator, the sharp metallic weapon mixed with the blood of your prey.
The Lonely- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Desolation: “In the perfume, I also tried to capture the blue-violet-white of an afterimage and the silence of a snuffed candle. The scent is dry with age, taut with loss, grief, and heartbreak, and sorrowful in the unspeakable desolation of simply being forgotten.”
Alone at last. Forever. Alone in life, alone in memory, alone in history. A scent that marks those marked by the Lonely, disappearing into nothing.
The Slaughter- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s The Black Tower- “A sepulchral, desolate scent. Long-dead soldiers, oath-bound; the perfume of their armor, the chill wind that surges through their tower, white bone and blackened steel: white sandalwood, ambergris, wet ozone, galbanum and leather with ebony, teak, burnt grasses, English ivy and a hint of red wine.”
The scent of those trapped in the endless cycle of the violence of war, spanning centuries of slaughter.
The Spiral- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s Azathoth: “Azathoth is the blind, idiot god who sits on a black throne at the center of Chaos. His scent is high-pitched and screeching, both impenetrably dark and searingly bright with the clarity of madness: tangerine, saffron, vetiver, black amber and cedarwood.”
A scent that matches the contradictions and chaos of the spiral.
The Stranger- Arcana Wildcraft’s Blood & Circuses: “The monstrously sweet scent of clowns gone wrong. An outlandish, carnivalic mix of white pancake makeup accord, pink cotton candy, and the salty sugariness of warm kettle corn.”
The circus has returned. I hope you’re ready for the show. Steer clear of anyone who carries this smell, and give an extra glance to the mannequins you pass.
The Vast- Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab’s R'Lyeh: “The sunken city of the Great God Cthulhu. A hellishly dark aquatic scent, evocative of fathomless oceanic deeps, the mysteries of madness buried under crushing black waters, and the brooding eternal evil that lies beneath the waves.”
The scent of an eternal expanse that you cannot possibly comprehend. Is it the fear of what lies beneath? Is it the depth itself? Does it matter once you’re lost in it?
The Web- Haus of Gloi’s Spider Silk: “Procured from a dream: delicate water mint, wispy grey musk, crystalline webs of amber, oakmoss, torchwood, copaiba resin, and a touch of withered violet leaf.”
A gentle spider creeps its way around, leaving their little traces in the webs they weave. Only too late will you notice that you’re trapped in the web.

ARCANA WILDCRAFT SNOW WITCH: FAMILIAR
The scent of a witch and her animal companions snuggling on a quiet, snow-muffled day. Cafe au lait, vanilla-infused cheesecake, a soft woolen blanket, and warm fur.
First sniff: This smells like hazelnut coffee and thick cream, with something just a little buttery hovering around the edges.
Wet on skin: More hazelnut coffee, this coffee scent is rounded and smooth, less sharp than the coffee in Haus Of Gloi’s Vice, and without chocolate. The heavy cream here is pervasive, a layer under which the nutty coffee sits. This reminds me of an affogato made with expensive gelato and espresso.
Drydown: The coffee scent has softened, and the creaminess of the scent has taken on a rubbery, plasticky quality. Vanillas have a tendency to turn into plastic on my skin, and this isn’t the same type of plastic I usually get. All of the delicious dessert notes are still there, overlaid completely with eau de rubber glove.
Final thoughts: This list of notes is a laundry list of scents that I always love, however the vanilla in there went awry, as they are often wont to do. I imagine that this would be excellent on plenty of people, it just doesn’t work for my skin chemistry.

tried out Arcana Craves Pumpkins Crave Cappuccino (Super roasted coffee bean EO, vanilla milk, pumpkin, and rum with shots of blackberry and black raspberry syrup) this afternoon!
this was very limited during their buy 3 get 1 deal, and i was early enough to snag one. when i first got it i was very nervous about the blackberry and raspberry syrup because it was VERY fruity and sweet and i could not see how it would mesh well with coffee and pumpkin.
turns out: i barely smell the pumpkin. unsurprisingly i also barely smell the coffee because of my dumb skin. so on me it’s a very creamy vanilla coffee with maybe a hint of pumpkin pie spice and some bright fruity berries. i don’t detect any rum. it’s very nice! however the bottle is VERY full and i doubt i’ll ever use this all up, so maybe i’ll decant some of it... i dunno, i always say that and then don’t do it.

Looking At Frogs: a BadTTRPG Scenario for 6(Lands)e
Hey, if Paizo can have enough confidence to release their "cops are good, actually" adventures, then i should absolutely make my weird little solo journaling game about being trans and looking at frogs.

Arcana Wildcraft's Meditations on Love
Julia of Arcana Wildcraft released the incredible Meditations on Love collection for Valentine's Day this year, and it has utterly blown me away. I truthfully love each scent, and am enchanted by the tenderness and beauty of this collection.
Tumblr media
Trust
Scent description: Lavender-scented kulfi, ruffled red carnations, precious French cognac, ribbons of melted caramel, white amber, fluffy vanilla, clove bud, and brown sugar.
Trust is soft and comforting, but with some intense throw! When first applied, it's the perfect lavender honey ice cream enjoyed on a sunny day in early spring. The carnations bring a lovely warmth and elevate this gentle blend to something magical. When dry, Trust reminds me of the scent of freshly-blown out candles on a buttercream-coated birthday cake. It's like a hug in a bottle!
Touch
Scent description: Golden honey on warm skin, soft brown leather, a baby lambswool sweater, floating layers of sheer silk, grey musk, and lightly smoked sap-frosted woods.
Touch is so very soft and cuddly. It smells like feathers and doe skin. It's the most beautiful, diaphanous musk sweetened with a mellow honey and warmed by the smoothest and softest brown leather and the fluffiest, cuddliest wool sweater (with nary a sharp/clean linen element). This is comfort in a bottle.
Tumblr media
Seduce
Scent description: Cafe au lait, delicate neroli, dark crimson musk, oven-toasted brioche, Mexican vanilla, crystalline chunks of rich amber, vintage patchouli, and smooth sandalwood.
Seduce is so powerful! It's a smooth, milky coffee with a glorious punch of glamorous red musk. The patchouli, amber, and brioche seem to meld together for me to create a sense of sticky-sweet caramel.
Muse
Scent description: Delicate, crisp lemon cookies, tart yuzu, velvet blankets, wild-harvested fir tips, warm stones in an ancient forest, sweet coconut water, and wild juniper.
I love this sort of blend. It's a tart, realistic, sugar-coated lemon and yuzu (recalling Lush's Yuzu & Cocoa), softened with a gush of smooth, milky coconut and warmed by a gentle hint of fir. There's a breath of cool juniper giving some extra life to the blend. Muse is life-affirming, refreshing and soothing, and would be lovely in both winter and summer.

Wide-eyed
Scent description: The sweet amazement of the dawning of love. A green meadow wreathed in mist, the beating of butterfly wings, Jasmine sambac, young, ripe strawberries, and a bit of sugar-gilded vetiver.
The jasmine sambac and vetiver were a little intimidating in the bottle, but on skin, I get uber ripe red strawberries on a bed of bright green grass. The jasmine and vetiver are actually very smooth and tame on skin--the jasmine and grass combination begins to smell like nectar-sweet clover. The strawberries are still present but have eased up a bit in strength, and the vetiver all but disappears. It now smells like a bee-filled meadow dotted with clover and strawberries. Wide-eyed is such a happy and sunny blend!
Blush
Scent description: A trail of wild-harvested mosses in an enchanted forest leads to a profusion of tuberose petals, fresh apricots, soft earth, and blushing peaches drizzled with a touch of wildflower honey.
Blush smells like cool rain-spattered peaches and ripe apricots! What I'm reading as rain must be the moss + earth. There's a soft glow of sweet honey and rich, creamy tuberose that gets stronger with wear, as if the scent itself is mimicking the progression of a blush! Lovely. On my skin, Blush ends up smelling like a verdant, showy garden full of peaches and tuberose after a warm rain in late spring.

🌊There is no arguing that being in nature is good for us: it feels good, is beautiful, and often brings out the free spirited child in us! Did you know there is actually a scientific explanation why places like the ocean make us feel good? Believe it or not, the same feel-good chemistry that happens at the ocean can also be generated by burning sage! 🌊🌿Both the pounding of the ocean against the shore and the burning of sage produce negative Ions, creating biochemical reactions in our bodies that increase levels of the mood stabilizing chemical serotonin, helping to alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime energy. When we feel better, we are able to focus more, resulting in a higher level of consciousness. So, there is actual scientific proof that burning sage (or "smudging" in some cultures or practices) actually works! 🌊🌿✨⠀ .⠀ 🌿Our white sage comes from one of two places: an organic white sage farm here in Southern California, and from an indigenous friend who wildcrafts with incredible care, and according to his tradition.
