someone please write this fic
being on lockdown during this pandemic resurrected some major bamon feels. my brain started to obsessively develop the plot for a bamon fanfic and since I do not consider myself a writer, I’m surrendering it to the void.
For your consideration, Bonnie and Damon’s lives after the TVD series finale starts something like this:
Bonnie needs a fresh start after the shitstorm of the last 8 years. Her friends are safe and moving forward with their lives, so she decides to go back and finish up college...far away from Mystic Falls. The idea of exploring anything supernatural is lost on her, so instead of following in Grams’ footsteps as an Occult Studies professor, she takes a different path. Bonnie discovers her passion for Human Rights and Global Health, earning a PhD in Social Epidemiology. Working for a nonprofit jumpstarts her solo trip around the world, traveling through various parts of Africa and southeast Asia.
Her love of travel and social justice advocacy inspires Bonnie to create a digital media publication to share her unique perspective. Self proclaimed anti-influencer, Bonnie creates Currently: Conquering the World with Dr. Bonnie which delivers education through travel – simultaneously offering honest first-hand travel insights, educating followers on important issues faced by the highlighted destinations and checking privilege. The platform uplifts the voices of WOC, POC and marginalized people. It has been featured in a couple of major publications, donates to local nonprofits, hosts a podcast and has a sizable social media following. Bonnie posts a booty shot for every 1,000 new followers to her instagram account to show that there’s no correlation between a badass bitch in a bikini and intelligence.
Magic takes a backseat to Bonnie’s career and she’s okay with it. She still practices and befriends a handful of witches and warlocks through her travels. However, she keeps the magnitude of her abilities mostly under wraps. There’s not a snowflake’s chance in hell that she will let the power of her lineage be taken advantage of again. Bonnie Bennett - joyful, unapologetic BAMF, brainiac and humanitarian - finally found her inner goddess and is making good on her promise to live her very best life.
Bonnie keeps in touch with the remaining members of the Mystic Falls Scooby gang, though marginally - FaceTime sessions with Caroline and Elena when they can fit into each other’s schedules and time zones, long conversations with Matt, and random texts from Damon complaining about anything and everything. In time, the calls become fewer and no news is good news in her mind. Plus, she has a business to run, places to be, people to educate and a patriarchy to dismantle.
At first, Damon struggles acclimating to his new human life. He’s not pleased to have to take up exercising to in order to maintain his physique and misses the strength and agility he once had as a vampire. The lack of bloodlust is a plus. Cooking and eating real food is way more rewarding and enjoyable, another plus. Although, he gets mildly depressed that his body needs to build up an alcohol tolerance and can actually now die from overdrinking. He finally has Elena all to himself which is all he ever wanted and he should be walking on cloud nine, but it’s all so overwhelming. Time is fleeting and he realizes how much he had taken it for granted. He misses Stefan so goddamn much and it doesn’t help that his best friend/favorite drinking buddy skipped town on him. He spends one whole year mourning his brother, wallowing in self-pity, and being the domesticated boyfriend to his Pre Med fiancé before he gets his shit together.
Inspired after binge watching Tidying Up on Netflix, Damon starts applying the Konmari method to the Boarding House. In the attic, he finds his bachelors of architecture along with a set of licenses he got for ‘shits and gigs’ back in the 80s and it sparks something in him. He was productive as a vampire, after all. Damon convinces Caroline to compel NCARB and the State Board of Contractors into reinstating his architect and contractor licenses – because that’s what family is for – and starts a design and contracting firm, working mostly on small tenant improvement projects in and around Mystic Falls. His first project is to renovate the Boarding House which he later hands over to Alaric to run the Salvatore School.
Damon and Elena get married in between the time she ends Pre Med and starts Med School. It’s a spontaneous ceremony at City Hall which Matt documents via Facebook Live. They make it through one year of marriage before things start to go south. With Elena now further away for Med School and Damon running his business in Mystic Falls, they barely make it work to see each other on weekends. Damon falls in love with a dilapidated old bar in the heart of town and purchases it, throwing himself into a major renovation. It serves as a nice distraction from the growing divide between him and the “love of his life.” Year two is the tipping point – Elena wants him to relocate closer her, Damon wants to continue growing his business in Mystic Falls and neither wants to compromise. They see each other even less and argue more until Elena admits she has been cheating on Damon with a colleague, and their decision to part ways is mutual. Not so epic love, after all.
The breakup isn’t as painful as he thought it would be since Elena and him were living separate lives already. He sells the property for which he planned to surprise his ex-wife with a family home and readjusts his plans for the bar to incorporate a second floor loft for himself. It takes Damon almost a full year to finish renovations on his pride and joy, Savior. Blood, sweat and tears went into preserving and restoring original, historic architectural features. He took great care in curating every single detail and it paid off because his bar was voted best in the county and has become the go-to place for intimate date nights and an impeccable drink selection.
Nine years after Bonnie hightailed it out of Mystic Falls for good, three years after founding Currently: Conquering and two-ish years after the grand opening of Savior, the former besties run into each other on the streets of Havana. The run and jump hug from when Bonnie resurrected herself from 90s Hell is relived and they play catch-up over medianoches. Bonnie is leading a group of travelers through Cuba for the next 10 days while Damon is on sabbatical to celebrate his thriving business ventures and divorce. He critiques the photo composition her latest ass shot posted to IG and she points out his new frown lines that would put Stefan’s to shame – and just like that, they’re besties all over again.
Bonnie invites him to join her tour group and having no set itinerary, Damon agrees. It’s truly refreshing to see Bonnie in her element. Bearing witness to the person she has grown into after the supernatural drama of yesteryear only reinforces Damon’s admiration of her. Having no real destination after Cuba, Damon piggybacks onto her next guided tour, leaning into the local culture that his best friend has grown to love so much. He even follows her to Costa Rica before he has to return home.
(Annnnnd that’s where it stopped)
Comments:
Does a similar fic already exist and I just don’t remember haven’t read it?
Would it be too much to ask for accurate characterization and spot-on snarky dialogue, and like, not written in first-person narrative?
Timing - I’ve estimated approx 9 years until Bamon meet up Cuba. Not sure if it makes logical sense with everything that happens in between.
Damon and Elena’s child(ren?) - didn’t consider them...the Gilbert’s shouldn’t procreate, IMO. I don’t plan on watching Legacies and not sure what is canon. The plot would need to be adjusted if included. Regarding the origins of Stefanie Salvatore - I’d say keep this character as DE’s spawn instead of rewriting as Bamon’s kid. Since Stefan killed Enzo, the name would be a sore spot for Bonnie.
Bonnie’s career - mimics that of Dr. Kiona who runs hownottotravellikeabasicbitch on IG - follow her! She’s awesome.

Studio Saxe nestles Sirena House in Costa Rican jungle
Pavilions wrapped in teak and glass form Sirena House by architectural practice Studio Saxe that is set on a lush, beachfront site in Costa Rica.
Sirena House is located in the coastal town of Santa Teresa. Built near the ocean on the edge of a tropical forest, the 1,000-square-metre home was designed to embrace its context.
Sirena House is a series of pavilions
"We decided to integrate the jungle experience into the house and also frame views of the ocean whilst blending with nature," said local firm Studio Saxe.
Rather than one big mass, the firm broke the home down into a series of pavilions that are slightly elevated above the ground.
Studio Saxe nestled the home in the jungle
Steel-framed volumes are clad in teak wood, along with large expanses of glass that offer a strong connection to the verdant landscape.
The pavilions are organised around a covered, central area with tropical foliage. Connecting the various volumes are sheltered walkways.
The pavilions are organised around the foliage
"This allows the inhabitant to experience the intense natural surrounding every time they have to move from one place to the other," the team said.
Thin roof overhangs – which are designed to look as if they are floating – cover the circulation spaces. Supported by clusters of skinny, steel columns, the overhangs were carefully positioned to provide protection from the sun and rain. The home is accessed on the east, where a walkway leads from a garage to the front entrance.
Three bedrooms are found on both the east and north side of the home. The main suite is located on the south.
The main suite has a canopy bed
On the west, there is an open and airy space for cooking, dining and lounging.
Folding glass doors enable the public space to become fully open to the backyard, where one finds a swimming pool and lawn. A curved walkway leads down to the beach.
An open-plan living space connects to the backyard
The interior features a neutral colour palette and materials such as teak, stone and Venetian plaster.
Pauline Steenkamer from the local studio Nosara Design selected the decor in collaboration with the client.
The swimming pool
The living room is fitted with a streamlined white sofa and a live-edge wooden coffee table. The kitchen has basket-like pendants and light-toned cabinetry.
In the main bedroom, a canopy bed is paired with a textured rug, woven chairs and a chunky wooden table. Gauzy white curtains are hung from the windows.
Pavilions are clad in teak wood
A number of sustainable features were integrated into the home, including a rainwater catchment and water recycling system. Some of the steel columns supporting the roof overhangs help collect rainwater.
Studio Saxe used a process it calls "bioclimatic design" to analyse the sun's movement, along with wind and precipitation patterns.
"An array of sustainable systems and a clever design make this project a pioneer in sustainable tropical architecture that has passive design at its core," the team said.
Dining outside against the jungle
Established by Benjamin Garcia Saxe in 2004, Studio Saxe is based in San José and has satellite offices in Los Angeles and London.
The firm has completed a number of houses in Costa Rica, including a residence clad in charred teak wood and a concrete home with a swimming pool that reaches toward the sea.

ARQUITECTO EXTRAORDINARIO matters to Benjamin Saxe
Key moments in our childhood often shape our destiny. Benjamin Saxe is a four-year-old boy living in the slums of San Jose in Costa Rica with his drug-addicted Mom, and she often abandons him for weeks at a time. Benjamin's only focus is survival and doing what he can to keep his Mom alive. Benjamin's dire situation changes one day. The Pauper became the Prince when a wealthy family adopts him. Benjamin describes himself as a street animal or urchin but one who embarks on a journey of triumph. Benjamin has an affinity for creativity and math and ends up studying at one of the top architecture schools. He meets Erica, his life partner, reconnects with his Mom, and then moves to England. He works for Richard Rogers, one of the top architect firms in the world. There Benjamin wins the top award in architecture for designing and building the first home his Mom has not made out of scrap metal.

Journal - These Are the World’s Most Beautiful Modern Residences in 2020
Architects, interior designers, rendering artists, landscape architects, engineers, photographers and real estate developers are invited to submit their firm for the inaugural A+Firm Awards, celebrating the talented teams behind the world’s best architecture. Register today.
The best homes are designed for everyday life. Countless housing projects are built around the world every year, across a wide range of scales, from small lofts and tiny homes to multi-unit residential towers. Reinterpreting local building conditions and vernacular forms, new residences reflect contemporary values as they are built for modern living.
The following projects were deemed the world’s best residences from the 2020 A+Awards, each winning either a Jury or Popular Choice Award, and sometimes both. Including projects of many scales, locations and construction statuses, these residences showcase some of the best architecture designed this year. Explore these new residential designs below, and discover the full list of 2020 A+Award winners across diverse typologies.
Downtown Loft by BDA Bushman Dreyfus Architects, Charlottesville, VA, United States Residential-Apartment, Jury & Popular Choice Awards
The renovated apartment is located on the third floor of the oldest building on the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville. The existing dark, commercial space was transformed into one spacious open floor apartment with a sleeping loft. Light is the theme of this minimal and modern intervention.
AMANI by Archetonic, Puebla, Mexico Residential-Multi Unit Housing – High Rise (16+ Floors), Jury & Popular Choice Awards
AMANI contains 226 housing units varying between 84 and 168 sqm distributed in two buildings of 22 levels each. The access hall has a mezzanine that welcomes the visitors and residents alike into the complex with connections to green areas, while the remaining levels include the housing units.
XS House by Interface Studio Architects LLC, Philadelphia, PA, United States Residential-Multi Unit Housing – Low Rise (1-4 Floors), Jury Choice Award
XS House places seven apartments on an underutilized site. Its extremely narrow, 11-foot-wide by 93-foot-long parcel is strategically expanded through bays, mezzanines, and bi-level upper units. The 63-foot-tall section connects seven levels of occupied space within its very small footprint, with unit stairs positioned to unlock mezzanine levels and create dramatic spaces.
Hadohilljo Townhouse by UNITEDLAB Associates LLC, Jeju-do, South Korea Residential-Multi Unit Housing – Low Rise (1-4 Floors), Popular Choice Award
This village is composed of a community center, 48 single residences, parks, and amenities. The main corridor connects the individual homes. The site, located in Hado-ri, is one of the most preserved natural regions. Hado-ri stands in high relief to the rapid march of development on other parts of Jeju Island.
Jeanette301 by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects [LOHA], Santa Ana, CA, United States Residential-Multi Unit Housing – Mid Rise (5-15 Floors), Jury Choice Award
Jeanette301 is a five-story apartment complex that fixes 182 units onto a relatively modest 2.1 acre site. The project houses a community of live-work studios with shared workshop and social spaces designed to facilitate and promote a collaborative living environment.
108 Chambers by Pure + FreeForm & Woods Bagot, New York, NY, United States Residential-Multi Unit Housing – Mid Rise (5-15 Floors), Popular Choice Award
108 Chambers is a 10-story mixed use building in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. The unique facade features custom geometric angular slab/spandrel metal panel formations surrounding the windows on the entire exterior. The finish, Deco Bronze, is a contextual nod to the previous building’s bronze facade.
Casa Mi by Daluz Gonzalez Architekten, Zürich, Switzerland Residential-Private House (L 3000-5000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
Casa Mi takes a series of slopped, interconnected massing to form connections around light and voids. A simple, matte white color palette and materials were chosen to shift the experiential focus away from the residence and out towards panoramic views.
Art Villas Costa Rica | Atelier Villa by Formafatal, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica Residential-Private House (L 3000-5000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
Not far from the Costa Rican town Uvita – there is a hidden small resort Art Villas on the jungle hill above the beach Playa Hermosa. Three unique villas and one multifunctional pavilion are scattered over a plot of land. Formafatal Studio was inspired by the atmosphere and colors of Central and South America.
Skigard Hytte by Mork Ulnes Architects, Fåvang, Norway Residential-Private House (M 1000-3000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
On top of a mountain in Kvitfjell, Norway is a regular grid of 45 wooden columns suspending a 144 square meter cabin 1.5 meters above the ground. These columns are clad with skigard – 3 meter long quarter-cut logs traditionally laid out diagonally by farmers as fencing.
Lightus Retreat by Joongwon Architects, South Lake Tahoe, CA, United States Residential-Private House (M 1000-3000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
Lighthus Retreat is a vacation home located in the wilderness of Lake Tahoe, a destination frequented by visitors near and far. Situated in a heavily wooded area, the design of the cabin stands away from traditional approaches of clear-cutting the site in favor of designing around trees.
CASA NAILA by BAAQ, Puerto Escondido, Mexico Residential-Private House (S <1000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
The house sits on a rocky point, as a beacon to the sea, with two fronts towards the Pacific coast. The cross-shaped courtyard has four seven-meter-high volumes, with a pitched roof that frame views to the sea.
The Modular Unit (MU50) by Teke Architects Office, Turkey Residential-Private House (S <1000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
The Modular Unit is a small-scale, off-grid structure, designed to be recyclable, to allow a wide range of building uses and reduce environmental impact maximizing its site flexibility. A single module consists of two timber frames and the enclosure between them which were prefabricated and then mounted on-site.
n.n. Residence by J.MAYER.H, Moscow, Russia Residential-Private House (XL >5000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
This home represents a spatial exploration between concealment and exposure. This layered topography blurs the line separating landscape and construction. It is the private residence of a family in a rural area along the River Moskva.
Casa Candelaria by Cherem Arquitectos, Mexico Residential-Private House (XL >5000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
Casa Candelaria was conceived under the concept of Mexican haciendas, solving the house around courtyards. A key intention for the design development was the decision to use rammed earth walls, with natural mineral aggregates that allows the earth to take on a black tone.
The garden house in the city by christos pavlou architecture, Nicosia, Cyprus Residential-Residential Interiors, Jury & Popular Choice Awards
A house that brings nature back to the city, promoting shared spaces and social dialogue between its residents is what inspired the team to design the ‘’garden house’’. The design emphasizes the potential for private urban gardens and the micro-climates they create to improve living conditions within cities.
MIRA by Studio Gang, San Francisco, CA, United States Residential-Unbuilt – Multi-Unit Housing (L >10 Floors), Jury Choice Award
MIRA is an urban residential development in the heart of San Francisco. Just blocks from the Bay Bridge, Embarcadero, and Rincon Park, the 400-foot-tall tower rethinks the classic bay window, a familiar feature of San Francisco’s early houses, reimagining it in a high-rise context.
H_1002 by 314 architecture studio, Athens, Greece Residential-Unbuilt – Multi-Unit Housing (L >10 Floors), Popular Choice Award
H1002 is a residential project situated in the heart of Athens. The plot is located in Spefsipou Street, in Kolonaki district, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the center of the city and it is connected to a neoclassical building built in 1870.
Variable by Marziemirjafari Residential-Unbuilt – Multi-Unit Housing (S <10 Floors), Jury Choice Award
The design team asked whether, in the construction of a house, it is possible to turn it into a flexible space with a different attitude and the use of technology , which can change dimensions according to the wishes of the residents, and can be moved.
Student Residence in Saclay_momentum by Bordas+Peiro Architecte Residential-Unbuilt – Multi-Unit Housing (S <10 Floors), Popular Choice Award
This student residence explored how to create a dense and inhabited city in a natural environment. Reinforcing the transition between an urban nature in the central fringe, and a more porous and less constituted fabric, this approach makes it “possible to dilute the borders between city and plant.”
The Meander by S^A | Schwartz and Architecture Residential-Unbuilt – Private House (L >3000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
Meandering rivers carved the coastal valleys surrounding this ridgeline home over millennium forming zig-zagging interlocking ‘spurs’, which draw the eye into the distance as they recede. This home’s staggered forms continue these rhythms.
NONAGRIAM TWINS by A31 ARCHITECTURE Residential-Unbuilt – Private House (L >3000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
Nestled among Andros’ wild mountains, fecund valleys and waterfalls, this complex consists of two detached houses. Modern and rigorous, the design bears clear lines and is organically linked to the natural landscape of Andros.
SkyValley House by Edward Ogosta Architecture Residential-Unbuilt – Private House (S <3000 sq ft), Jury Choice Award
Conceived as a “California chalet for the 21st Century,” the SkyValley House in the town of Lake Arrowhead references the historic legacy of local mountain dwellings while maintaining a contemporary architectural expression. The project culminates in a rooftop viewing perch at the valley between the main roof volumes.
Six- House Villa by BNS Studio Residential-Unbuilt – Private House (S <3000 sq ft), Popular Choice Award
Six- House villa is a modern metaphor for the definition of house in traditional Persian architecture. The word “House” used to refer to the concept of today’s “Room” in the past; in that sense, a dwelling included a few “Houses” each with specific functionality.

cone-shaped pods in art villas resort nestled in the jungle landscape
Following the belief of two villas hidden a few of the jungles of costa rica, additional structures are nearing finishing touch as a part of a luxurious resort. ‘coco’ is a sequence of 5 cabins for rent, even as the ‘wing’ is a versatile deck that can be used for plenty of purposes. Coco’s cone-shaped pods interiors had been designed via formafatal, the czech architecture firm behind the web page’s ‘atelier villa’. Embedded into the hillside, the resort’s different villa is a concrete residing with a infinity pool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ARCHWERK is the architect at the back of ‘coco’ and ‘wing’, with architect martin a. Tomas also working at the latter. Formafatal, led with the aid of dagmar štěpánová, was accountable for the project’s interior layout and outdoors finishing. Conceived as a ‘high priced nest’, ‘coco’ comprises 5 character cone-shaped systems connected with open terraces, in addition blurring the bounds between internal and external living space. once complete, the web site will also feature a waterslide leading to a pool. Hilton, Hyatt, Marriot and Bulgari are the best resort brands all over the world. Their Hotels and resorts are in top ten. But this cone-shaped pods is such a unique design for a jungle landscape. Location is a little in addition down the hillside. The ‘wing’ is a horizontal platform sheltering with a one of a kind roof canopy. Renderings for this a part of the plan display different regions for rest and shared experiences, including bean bags, putting chairs, a stone tub, and an outdoor kitchen. Designboom has previously protected the resort’s other two dwellings — the ‘art villa’ and the ‘atelier villa’. See the artwork villas website for more information. Read the full article

Studio Saxe adds plant-covered athletic centre to Costa Rican hotel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Architecture firm Studio Saxe has designed this athletic complex for a Costa Rica hotel to be like "a small village amongst the trees".
Tumblr media
The Athletic Center is an addition to The Gilded Iguana hotel in Nosara, Costa Rica, a residence that Studio Saxe renovated in 2018. It is conceived as a modular construction built around the existing vegetation on the site. Measuring 615 square metres, it houses a surf-shop, bike-shop, gym, exercise studios and massage rooms that can be used by resort guests and locals.
Tumblr media
"The Athletic Center was designed as a small village amongst the trees that creates a public space which integrates locals with visitors with similar interests of pursuing an active lifestyle and wellbeing," Studio Saxe said. To preserve the landscaping already on the site, Studio Saxe designed the health facility to comprise separate structures. These are built around the trees and other vegetation that connect to one another by a series of raised footbridges.
Tumblr media
"It was designed to preserve and protect the existing vegetation and natural habitat of its surroundings through intelligent engineering by disintegrating the mass of the building into many components to distribute the project around trees and vegetation," the studio added. Each of the buildings is constructed with a prefabricated steel frame clad in reforested teak wood. Long roof overhangs span across the top of the structures to shade and protect the interiors from sun and rain. They also collect water used to power the building's mechanical and irrigation systems. It was prefabricated in parts off-site and assembled quickly to not impact the land and businesses already located on the property. The design is also intended to consider bioclimatic factors such as solar orientation, wind pattern and noise. Its large windows and expansive rooflines permit the building to consume minimal energy.

Rectangular plant boxes with spilling greenery and large windows front every face of the structures. Raised wooden walkways with metal railings join the upper levels of the separated buildings, while similar stone paths traverse the grounds. Inside, the exercise room floors are covered with blue vinyl mats. Spotlights and sporting equipment including ropes and punching bags hang from tracks attached to the wood beams that span across the ceilings.

Four sink basins and several plant boxes are carved into a monolithic stone piece to form a counter in the complex's bathroom. Shades constructed using slats of wood control the amount of light that enters the space.

Amazon’s Expansive Biodomes Get Their First of 40,000 Plants
RON GAGLIARDO JUST might have the most unusual job at Amazon. He spends most of his time tending to the thousands of plants destined for the Spheres, the 90-foot bulbous glass dome in the middle of Amazon’s sprawling campus in downtown Seattle.
Last week, Gagliardo watched as workers pulled an Australian tree fern off of an Amazon Prime truck, carried it through a particularly wide door in one of the spheres, and plopped it into the soil. Australian tree ferns are hardy, primordial plants that can reach 50 feet tall and “a favorite among greenhouse staff,” says Gagliardo. This particular specimen spent three years growing in Amazon’s conservatory at the edge of town. It is the first of the 40,0001or so plants destined for the domes, which open next year.
Tumblr media
Maybe it’s all the screen time or mounting evidence that employees excel when surrounded by nature, but tech companies suddenly love plants. Airbnb installed a living wall in the lobby of its San Francisco headquarters. Apple wants a small forest of 8,000 trees at its new campus in Cupertino. Adobe incorporated biophilic design into its offices in San Jose, California. Yet they all pale compared to Amazon and its three conjoined spheres, which are both meeting rooms and conservatories that will house more than 400 species of rare (and non-rare) plants.
Tumblr media
When Amazon began building its new campus five years ago, it insisted on incorporating nature in the design. Employees can open windows windows in Doppler, the 38-story tower downtown. Plazas teeming with trees dot a campus of 30 buildings. Dogs romp in a park designed just for them. And then there are those spheres, designed to bring the outdoors indoors within the confines of an office building. “The question was, how do we do this in a significant way,” says Dale Alberda, a principal architect at NBBJ, the firm behind Amazon’s new campus. “Just bringing plants into the office wasn’t going to cut it.”
Tumblr media
The designers explored hundreds of shapes before choosing spheres. “It’s the most efficient way of enclosing volume,” Alberda says. The domes, made of glass panels on a steel frame, create enclosed biospheres that combine work and nature. That created a challenge, though, because plants and humans like different things. Plants thrive in warm, muggy environments. Humans do not. Amazon may love nature, but it still needs productive employees, so it compromised: The domes remain a pleasant 72 degrees with 60 percent humidity during the day, while at night they’re a more plant-friendly 55 degrees with 85 percent humidity.
Tumblr media
“It’s people first,” says Gagliardo. “Then we figured out what plants we could put around people.” Gagliardo started with plants found in similar climates. Mid-elevation regions like the cloud forests of Ecuador, Costa Rica, and parts of China fit the bill. A crew will carefully crane a 60-foot tree from California into the domes next month. Once gardeners and horticulturalists plant everything, the dome and its 60-foot living wall will house vegetation from more than 50 countries.
Tumblr media
Some of those plants, like moss, ferns and calatheas, have no problem with low light. Others, like the African aloe tree, require full sun. The architects shunned the triangular panels you may know from Buckminster Fuller’s famed geodesic dome in favor of the five-sided panels of a pentagonal hexecontahedron. That resulted in larger panels, which allows more sunlight into the sphere. Ninety LED fixtures with light sensors provide additional lighting when necessary.
Tumblr media
All those plants need a lot of water, a task Gagliardo prefers to do by hand. “The collection is so diverse that putting everything on automatic sprinklers would be really difficult,” he says. Each day his team of horticulturists will wander the domes amid executives taking walking meeting and office drones doing whatever Amazon’s office drones do, tending to plants and rooting around in the dirt. “It’s a dream job,” Gagliardo says. “I never would have thought I’d be here at Amazon doing horticulture.”

1UPDATE 11:55 AM ET 05/6/2017: This story has been updated to accurately reflect the number of plants in Amazon’s Spheres.
