I really really like that lucanis reaches the 'there must be some way through this' realization 'off camera', so to speak, while presumably looking at rook explaining the situation to spite. it just. hits right. he gets that moment to himself after 'this place is a nightmare, why would I want to stay here' to come back into focus, to gather himself and think it through in peace, outside of the demands of anyone’s gaze (including the player’s!), while rook takes care of spite’s confusion and urgency and distress as he can’t himself in this shattered state. they're inside his soul, but he still gets that moment of privacy, with rook and spite there and supporting but not intruding. idk there's just something so good and right-feeling about it. rook's presence in lucanis' mind at its most vulnerable and frozen could have felt SO invasive if the quest wasn't written as skillfully as it is, and I get skeeved out by that kind of thing incredibly easily so it's a testament to how well it's done that it always feels safe and supportive. lucanis has had both his bodily and psychological (slash spiritual/existential) integrity and autonomy violated so brutally and repeatedly, and having even the way the camera perceives him here grant him the dignity and respect and privacy of soul he hasn’t experienced in a long time… it’s a whole thing huh. No wonder it’s taken me a while to put it into words lol 

(also what a contrast to what solas and rook have got going on, and what a sly way to slide the point of comparison in there to build to the thematic whole. the solas version of this IS of course wildly invasive and skeeves me out but in the intended delighted horror movie way. solas, too, was let into someone’s soul through the cracks in the wake of a traumatic event, and he IMMEDIATELY sought to turn it to his own benefit and use that trauma as a weapon against them fhdsja I’m sorry but it’s just such a character-revealing instinct for him to act on without hesitation and I love how terrible he is, it’s all so unforgivably premeditated and consistent.

rook acting out of the desire to make sure lucanis is ok vs. solas going ‘well. When life gives you oops killed my friend, make dead friend poisoned lemonade and make his loved ones drink it. this sunk cost fallacy isn’t going to perpetuate itself’ is such a neat contrast and it’s not in your face about it but it’s still there, deep and solid down in the thematic narrative. rook doesn’t do anything to or in lucanis’ mind, really — they negotiate their way through the layers of defense and are let through, and they help him make the whole thing more explicable, but they never exert any force or go rooting around for anything that doesn’t present itself to them first. solas goes about gathering ammo for when he's going to nothing personel kid this person from like the first moment fhdskh doesn't waste a second before he's on that gaslight gatekeep girlboss grind. the fact that the game goes out of its way to show there IS a respectful, non-selfish and kind version of this process makes what solas is doing even more deliciously awful (glee) and rook and lucanis’ relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever it might be in any given playthrough) all the more moving to me)

Downfall has only just started, but already I'm deeply curious what Bells Hells reaction will be to seeing it play out. I've mentioned before that I suspect the dislike or outright disdain some of the party feels for the gods - most notably Ashton and Laudna, but also Imogen at times - is in part a product of the gods being so distant as to not feel like real people to them, and therefore being easy scapegoats.

It’s easy to see the mortal victims of Ludinus and the Vanguard as just that: victims. The Hells have met them, have been them. They have not seen or felt the gods suffer in the same way. Laudna even went so far as to blame the gods for mortal deaths and suffering after the solstice, even as the gods are the ones under attack. They feel uniquely abandoned by the world, and it's easy to blame these distant, powerful figures for their hardship. Certainly much easier than to see the mortal systems that enabled their harm, or to actively seek improvement on their own.

But to see the gods now, not just as people but as mortals, with all the flaws and vulnerabilities and fears of any of the Hells, with loved ones of their own and the same desperate sense of self-preservation as any living thing, will they be able to hold onto the disdain that they’ve clung to for so long?

YESSS I definitely think he’d be protective—just in his own weird and esoteric way. I feel like, even months (and let’s be real, years) after the war is over, Starscream would struggle to let himself form attachments without strings.

While they were under Megatron’s employ, it was only natural for a commander to care about the wellbeing of strategically-vital colleagues, but now that the war’s over, he’d have to find other ways to justify his investment… Which, luckily, is not too hard, cuz 1) he kind of needs to have a doctor-contact to stay alive and well, and 2) having someone backing him as the leading representative for ex-Decepticons on Neo Cybertron is important for his legitimacy ⬅️ guy who really struggles with Not Scheming after Only Scheming for Millions of Years

Having at least one follower will make it easier to command the respect of other returning ’cons than having no one would (disregarding the fact that everyone else considers him and Knock Out to be of equal status in the ‘rebuilding Cybertron’ endeavour, and—if he’s being really and truly honest with himself—he does too; he only does the ex-commander thing to posture and distance).

So of course he’s concerned with keeping Knock Out in his pocket, and also gets antsy when he doesn’t know where Knock Out is or what he’s doing and why isn’t he being kept in the loop HELLO would it not have been pertinent to INFORM him of his little jaunts in Shockwave and Ratchet’s new lab—honestly, Starscream thought Knock Out didn’t even like Shockwave—or joyrides across the wastes with that self-righteous little scout and the starry-eyed groupie?! What does KO mean ‘it wasn’t a big deal’ and ‘you’re hovering again [neutral-positive observation]’ (he is a SEEKER not a HELICOPTER he does NOT hover), should he not know where his sort-of-partner-kind-of-second-in-command is AT ALL TIMES (unless he’s mad at KO in which case KO can go scrap himself)—

So with that in mind, I imagine his protectiveness usually manifests in him being annoying as all hell 🤦 Which Knock Out finds both amusing-and-maybe-endearing and absolutely irritating (‘by the pit do you ever stop nagging’) in alternation. I think despite Starscream’s readiness to nitpick, though, he’d freeze up when the iron is hot (haha referencing my own art /smacked) when it comes to making requests of Knock Out to stick around if he doesn’t have a concrete reason for it beyond ‘it would soothe his anxiety.’

But if anyone or anything ever does something to KO, they better hope to Primus the Autobots will save their spark cuz they are going to DIE otherwise, and it will NOT be quick and easy like Cliffjumper’s termination!!!

Though SS would probably, like, try to be chill and aloof about this anyway. It’s not like he had an extreme emotional reaction to something bad happening to you Doctor it’s purely that he has honour as a Decepticon and must enforce karma to assure everybot knows not to frag around and find out, you see. Why is everyone asking when the last time he recharged was—Primus, he’s not a sparkling—and maybe if the Autobots and vehicons weren’t such incompetent oafs he wouldn’t even HAVE to stand watch in Knock Out’s recouperation suite 24/7 😒!!! He’s only being RESPONSIBLE, doing his DUE DILIGENCE—which, honestly, those Autobot hypocrites should be doing FOR him!

(Meanwhile Knock Out is on the recharge slab, in pretty good shape for all the fuss Starscream is making, like :] but playing along anyway. ‘Clearly the Autobots’ security initiatives are lacking in the first place—I can’t believe they let me get ambushed!’ and ‘Say, I’m feeling a twinge between the wheels, along the transformation seam—would you take a look? No, no need to get Ratchet’ and ‘Though, as much as I appreciate the dedication, Screamer, this is starting to feel like a prison watch—’)

Bad End: The Fall

Summary: It's my Hound!MC Alon's birthday, so I made some sketches of them and Mhin based on the scene from Transformers One! For context, the idea is that Vere has gotten himself free and went on a rampage in the Senobium, slaughtering students and clerics alike, and destroying the labs and archives, along with all hope of finding cures for Mhin and Alon's respective curses. In the midst of the massacre, Vere finally made Mhin lose control of the monster within them and they have transformed into a crow monster hybrid. There is a brutal and bloody fight between them but Mhin has finally defeated Vere and is about to kill him, when Alon, their partner, stops them.

“What are you doing?”

“It’s over. He lost.”

“So did we! We lost everything because of him — I have to do this!”

“No, you don’t. Look at him, he's down. He's no longer a threat.”

“He needs to die! Can’t you see that?”

“This won’t cure either of us! Don't do this, Mhin. Don’t be the monster he says you are.”
