A photo of Izumi-san's capturing what remains of the façade to the Library of Celsus, an ancient Roman building constructed in the second century, considered one of the great libraries of the ancient world.
To the webmaster's recollection, there doesn't seem to be any architecture in Magus's international releases where the Library of Celsus' influence is visible at the time of posting.
Some excerpts from an article about the Library on worldhistory.org:
The Library of Celsus in ancient Ephesus, located in western Turkey, was a repository of over 12,000 scrolls and one of the most impressive buildings in the Roman Empire. Constructed in the 2nd century CE, it was named after the city's former Roman governor. Today, only the library's impressive facade remains of this once great building and is a silent witness to the city's stature as a great centre of learning and early Christian scholarship during the Roman period. The library had three entrance doorways, each with elaborately decorated frames, with the central doorway being greater in height than the other two. The doorways each have a window above them, and they are flanked by four statues set back in niches. These figures with inscribed bases represented four qualities associated with the late governor: • wisdom (sophia) • intelligence (ennoia) • knowledge (episteme) • virtue (arete) The interior of the library measured 16.72 m by 10.92 m (54.8 x 35.8 ft) giving some 180 square metres (2,000 square feet) of floor space, and it was paved with decorated marble. Part of the western wall is curved to form an apse. The walls were lined with niches for storage of the scrolls. There may have been around 12,000 scrolls which were intended to be consulted on the spot and not removed from the library, although some borrowing may have been permitted by a privileged few. Unfortunately, in 262 CE the library was destroyed by fire during a Gothic invasion. However, the facade survived and repairs were made to the library in the late-4th century CE and a small fountain added next to the steps in front. [...] In the 10th century CE, an earthquake caused the facade to collapse. The library was excavated in 1904 CE and the sarcophagus of Celsus discovered. The facade was reassembled and then partially restored. The great statues of the building's facade were taken to Vienna after their discovery and so today they have been replaced by faithful copies.

Drawing seminar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some important points i took form this seminar
Drawing is art at its simplest and most accessible, it is at the centre of everything we do.
Drawing enables us to communicate or to depict an object.
It's important to have the skill and grow as an artist and not overlook it as a skill.
Drawing has great power, it can be an account of this time and place in history and the influence that may have on the future.
Materials, technic and style have a great impact on every piece and says something different.
Time does not equal better with a drawing, some of the quickest drawing arete best at conveying a message or getting the point across.
You don't have to keep moving and go from one thing to another, you can redraw something a million times to get to know the subject and you can get so much more understanding.
To get the full essence of an object it is best to draw it from life and to have it in front of you rather than a photo.
Drawing has always been very important as it can be used as a weapon to communicate truths, stories or propaganda.

The Role of the Outdoor Environment in Child Development
In an era where technology dominates children's lives, the significance of the outdoor environment in child development has often been overlooked. Yet, research consistently shows that time spent outdoors is crucial for the holistic development of children. At Arete Outdoor Centre, we emphasize the transformative power of nature in nurturing the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional aspects of a child’s growth. Here’s why the outdoor environment plays such a vital role in child development.
Tumblr media
1. Physical Development
Outdoor environments offer endless opportunities for physical activity, which is essential for healthy growth and development in children. Activities such as running, jumping, climbing, and exploring not only improve cardiovascular health but also enhance motor skills, balance, and coordination. The varied terrain found in natural environments challenges children to navigate different surfaces, strengthening their muscles and improving their agility. Regular physical activity outdoors also helps in maintaining a healthy weight, preventing obesity, and promoting a lifelong habit of active living.
2. Cognitive Development
The outdoor environment is a rich, dynamic classroom that stimulates cognitive development in ways that traditional indoor settings cannot. Nature provides a multitude of sensory experiences—sights, sounds, smells, and textures—that engage a child’s curiosity and encourage exploration. This hands-on learning fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills as children interact with their surroundings, make observations, and draw conclusions. For example, identifying different types of plants or insects, understanding weather patterns, or building a structure using natural materials requires logical thinking and creativity. Moreover, outdoor play often involves unstructured activities, which promote imaginative play and flexible thinking.
3. Emotional and Psychological Well-being
Nature has a profound impact on a child’s emotional and psychological well-being. The calmness and tranquility of the outdoor environment act as a natural stress reliever, reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation. Children who spend time in nature are often happier, less irritable, and more resilient to emotional challenges. Being outdoors also provides a sense of freedom and independence, boosting self-confidence as children take on challenges and achieve small victories in their explorations. The unpredictability and vastness of nature also teach children to manage risk and build resilience, essential traits for emotional development.
4. Social Development
The outdoor environment is a social playground where children learn to interact with others, share experiences, and develop essential social skills. Whether it’s playing team sports, participating in group challenges, or simply exploring with friends, outdoor activities encourage collaboration and communication. Children learn to negotiate, cooperate, and resolve conflicts while engaging in group play. Additionally, the less structured nature of outdoor activities allows for inclusive play, where children of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds can participate together. This fosters empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity, all of which are critical components of social development.
5. Connection with Nature and Environmental Stewardship
Spending time outdoors helps children develop a deep connection with nature, fostering a sense of wonder and appreciation for the environment. This connection is crucial for cultivating environmental stewardship from a young age. When children regularly interact with natural settings, they develop a sense of responsibility to protect and preserve these spaces. Activities such as planting trees, participating in clean-up drives, or learning about local wildlife instill in children the values of conservation and sustainability. These early experiences lay the foundation for a lifelong commitment to environmental protection and responsible living.
Conclusion
The outdoor environment plays an indispensable role in the overall development of children. It nurtures their physical health, stimulates cognitive growth, supports emotional well-being, enhances social skills, and fosters a lifelong connection with nature. At Arete Outdoor Centre, we are dedicated to providing children with enriching outdoor experiences that contribute to their holistic development. By embracing the outdoors as a vital part of their lives, we can ensure that children grow up to be healthy, happy, and environmentally conscious individuals. It’s time to recognize the profound impact that nature has on child development and make outdoor education an integral part of every child’s upbringing.

Hi gorgeous, I hope you’re doing great today! I have a small curiosity. I know you mostly “follow” the female part of the royal families, but my question regards a male consort. Speaking of how a formerly non royal person has improved her/himself during the years as a royal, how Prince Daniel has improved himself? I hope this is clear, English is not my native language (I’m Italian). Thank you!
I don’t know the last time anyone except my mother called me gorgeous haha. Honestly it’s not been the best few days, I’ve been doing pretty badly, but I’m trying to implement some of the things from my therapy and just remember I can’t change what people do and say but I can change how I respond to it. It’s easier said than done but I’m getting there haha. I hope you’re doing well!
Your English is far better than my Italian! I’m not 100% sure if I’m interpreting it correctly but my understand is that you’re kind of asking what he’s done to succeed in his role as a royal and how he’s changed since marrying Victoria? Daniel’s biggest challenge when he married in was his relationship with the press. He hated them and was really not comfortable being in the limelight at all. That was a big challenge for him. I think since marrying in both he and Victoria have developed a really good relationship with the press in Sweden by being fair and clear. They know there is interest in their lives so they have been willing to share pictures and appear in the documentaries like Aret Med Kungafamiljen and in return they are left alone most of the time, the kids are left alone at school. And because the press in Sweden have respected that they seem to have built up a relationship which works really well for them. Daniel has given interviews, done photo shoots, he interacts with the press at engagements. He is a lot happier and more comfortable than when he married in, it’s a lot easier for him to be the centre of attention now. Obviously when he first married in he had to find his feet in terms of what his role would be and over the years he has branched out and started projects on his own, without Victoria. But he has drawn on things he knew from before he was a royal. For example in 2013 he founded Prince Daniel’s Fellowship which is a programme supporting young entrepreneurs. He will often visit schools and universities with some of Sweden’s leading business people and they give talks and advice to young people on running a business. This is inspired by Daniel’s own experiences setting up a chain of successful gyms. The programme has grown a lot and taken on more and more leading business experts. That year was also the first time he did Prince Daniel’s Race and Sports Day which is an annual event centred around promoting physical activity amongst children. It has expanded to different locations and is now like a festival of different sporting activities. That’s again based on his experiences working in fitness.

Ok so I don’t think y’all are ready for this
ZephyrusWings (submitted by @quirky-cash!!)
Description: Blacks, greys, whites and brown overscales, with paler underscales; large, feathered wings; black forked tongues; dull claws, not able to pierce a Pyrrhian dragon’s scales; built for endurance, not speed or strength; an adult ZephyrusWing is a head smaller than an adult SkyWing or RainWing - the smallest Pyrrhian tribes.
Abilities: Powerful fliers; able to fall asleep while flying, can drink seawater, can withstand freezing temperatures and high pressures, can hold breath for several hours, extremely strong eyesight
Queen: Queen Arete
•(dear OP, I’ve done this to shorten the segment for those who have read it)
A Brief History: ZephyrusWings mainly tell their history through song and dance, with only a couple of scribes in the tribe. - ZephyrusWings lived on an island quite near Pyrrhia during the Scorching, living between the Ice and Sky kingdoms. Not wanting to become extinct, as their numbers had been severely lowered by scavengers and other dragons, the Queen at the time, Queen Cyclone, brought her tribe to a nearby cluster of islands. - Due to earthquakes and the sorts, the islands eventually became around a months flight from Pyrrhia. - ZephyrusWing language stayed the same, while the Pyrrhian tribes speech evolved, meaning the dragons speak different languages. - The ZephyrusWings eventually assumed that all dragons on Pyrrhia were dead, not bothering to make the flight back to see if they still thrived. ZephyrusWings avoid(ed) Pyrrhia when on their flights due to fear of running into scavengers. - Soon, when the natural resources started running out, the Queen at that time, Queen Hail, the daughter of the late Queen Cyclone, migrated with the rest of her tribe. Around a year later, they had circled the world, landing back on Exulans (the name of their grouping of islands), and the land was bountiful. - Many years later, during the time of Queen Breeze, lightweight armours and weapons, and lightweight decorative jewellery were invented. She also created the more arty career path such as sculptors and painters. - The first lesbian Queen, Bleak. Adopted children with her lover, Leviathan. Reduced homophobia in the tribe.
Naming System: ZephyrusWing names are similar to IceWing, SkyWing and SeaWing names, due to having a mix of all three in their homeland, eg. there could be a dragon named Cloud, another named Marlin, and another named Iceberg.
The Islands- “Exulans”: Exulans is north to Pyrrhia, above the Ice Kingdom. It is shaped like a dragon in flight. The islands are mainly patches of tundra, caves and mountains. The tallest mountain is on the royal family’s island, which the palace is built on/inside. The mountain is not named, but often nicknamed “Mount Cloudtoucher” due to it’s immense height. The royal palace is carved out of stone, with tons of small details and carvings in the rock. The colour of the stone is an obsidian black, and the palace actually goes inside the mountain. There is a burial island, where the ZephyrusWings lay their dead to let them naturally decompose. There is a large island that is used for markets. There are stalls set up there.
Modern Society: - ZephyrusWings mate for life. But, when one of a pair dies, the living dragon may take another mate and have more dragonets. - Each family of ZephyrusWings have their very own island. - ZephyrusWings raise their hatchlings in their own family. When the hatchlings are three years old, they can go to one of three schools. - The first school is Breeze’s School of Creative Arts, which teaches dragonets about the arts and helps them get a job in their preferred arty profession. - The second school is The Academy, which teaches dragonets about hunting, fighting and similar activities. - The third school is Mountain Ridges High, which teaches dragonets everything. Mainly, though, bartering and how to get a job that focuses on selling and running a business - There is a fourth school, where royalty send their dragonets. This school is Queen’s Elite Academy, where princes, princesses and other young royals go to learn about the islands, history and how to rule- (the latter for the females). - When around the age of 12, the dragonets, now young adults, are ready to get a job. They’ll either join their family back on their home island, or “purchase” their own island and create their own family, (think wolf packs). There are a large collection of jobs available, some shown below. THE ARTY CAREER PATH - Jewellers | Jewellers craft jewellery and sell it at the markets. They’re usually females, due to having smaller talons, able to place jewels more carefully. - Sculptors | Sculptors sculpt items, either for decoration and to sell, or, the Royal Sculptors, to preserve history. They’re also usually females, due to having sharper talons, used for detailing. - Storytellers | Storytellers are singers. They sing during festivals. It’s gender neutral, as both males and females can sing. - Musicians | Musicians play music during festivals and can busk for money at the markets. This is gender neutral. - Weavers | Weavers buy the wool from farmers and weave it into cloth, which is used in various things. PRACTICAL CAREER PATH - Hunters | Self explanatory. They hunt fish and can sell the prey at the markets. Gender neutral. - Smiths | Smiths smith armours and weapons. Such armours are used when hunting the larger prey animals, such as whales, and also for guards. Same with weapons. They can sell their creations at the markets. Usually males. - Guards | Guards guard the palace and the Royal family. Gender neutral. - Farmers | Farmers raise animals such as sheep and goats, both of which have adapted to the climate. They even shear the sheep and collect milk from the goats, selling both. MISC. PATH - Merchants | Merchants often collect things from around the islands and when migrating. They can sell everything that they collect, as long as a dragon wants it. Gender neutral. - Servants | Servants clean the Royal palace after a migration, as the palace would be covered in dust. Usually female. - Teachers | They teach the dragonets in one of the four schools. Gender neutral. - Astronomers | They research the stars and moons, and can tell when the next full moon(s) happen. They are very important, as several festivals happen when at least one moon is full. Gender neutral. - Healers | Self explanatory. The Healers are in possession of the Seashell of Healing. Gender neutral.
Animus History: There have been no animus ZephyrusWings in recorded history. The animus touched objects that ZephyrusWings have are rare, as they were either gifts or stolen long, long ago. Some animus touched items that ZephyrusWings have in their possession are; - Fire-Stones | There are hundreds of Fire-Stones, with each family having them. Strike them together over a pile of kindling, and immediately a fire will be lit. These stones are black with silver coloured streaks. - Amulet of Striking | This amulet lets each slash of claws hit true. It is rumoured that Seagull wore this when she challenged and k¡lled her mother. It is gold with a sapphire in the centre. - Rings of Invisibility | None except the Thieves Guild know these exist. When worn, the dragon goes invisible- perfect when stealing. There are five rings. The rings seem to be made of obsidian. - Seashell of Healing | A pinkish blue seashell that when touched to a dragon, heals all wounds instantly. - The Royal Palace | Much like the Summer Palace. The black stone doesn’t stop growing, and little details in the stone don’t stop forming. It is unknown why the palace is like this, as there have never been animus ZephyrusWings. - The Great Stone Wall | A stone wall that is enchanted to inscribe in pictures great events in history. These current events are in *Known Queens/Princesses/Important Others* where it says that it’s inscribed on stone. Same with the Royal Palace, it is unknown how it was enchanted. It is also made out of the same black stone. - Bottomless Pouches | Each dragon has a Bottomless Pouch, where you can put as much money in there as you want and it will never fill. This only works for money, nothing else, however. They are small, brown, leather bags that can be hung around the neck like a necklace. - The Basin | A large stone dip in the ground found in the Royal Palace. It is made out of the black stone and is found in an empty room, except for the basin, off of the Grand Hall. Put anything but a dragon in there and it will instantly multiply. This is how Fire-Stones, Bottomless Pouches and the currency are made.
Rituals: - Every year the tribe migrates to let the land refresh itself. The migration takes about a year to circle the earth and land back on their homelands. - When a ZephyrusWing dies when in Exulans, their body is placed on the burial island, left to decompose. If they die while migrating, several dragons would carry the corpse on a stretcher-like contraption and fly ahead of the tribe to get back faster. - They have many festivals that celebrate many things. - The Great Hunt happens a bit before leaving to migrate again. They prepare a feast for all dragons so each one is full before migration, where they do not have the luxury of cooked food.
Festivals: - The first festival is right after migration, celebrating the first migration led by Hail. This festival lasts for a week, with foods, special drinks and dances, music and songs. - ZephyrusWings celebrate finding Exulans five days after the Festival of Migration. There is also song and dance on this day, but it only lasts one day. The Queen would make an announcement on this day, telling the story of Cyclone. - The next festival happens when two moons are full next. They celebrate Puffin, “The Thief Queen” during that night. Every dragon helps out with the schools and cares for the islandless dragons for the next few days. - The final festival occurs halfway when getting back and before heading off again. It celebrates Bleak and her lover Leviathan. Dragons declare their love for each other on this day. - Before the Great Hunt, they celebrate Breeze and her invention of lightweight armours and weapons. They sing and show off fancy, decorative armours that are for sale.
Mutations: There may be some dragons who are born without hollow bones. This means they cannot migrate with the rest of their tribe due to not being able to glide. This is extremely rare, however, and these dragons are treated with disrespect.
Other: - Old relics and such often wash up on shore, puzzling the modern day dragons of Pyrrhia. These have many myths and rumours surrounding them. - Modern day dragons have tried to decode the ancient speech that has been found on rock walls and relics, naming the ancient dragons “ZephyrusWings”. - Modern day dragons believe ZephyrusWings are extinct. - Modern day dragons have many myths and rumours surrounding the “extinct” ZephyrusWings. - They are a month flight away from Pyrrhia, so there are no Pyrrhian/Pantalan dragons at Exulans. - They stay at Exulans for two years, and then migrate. It takes a year to circle the world and come back. - Their diet consists of fish and other sea animals. - Their average lifespan is 300 years. They often die of other causes before passing 200 years, however. - Before the time of Breeze, the heavier armours had drowned dragons as when hunting, they had weighed the dragons down. - ZephyrusWing currency is different to Pyrrhian dragon currency, and much like our own. They use different coloured pieces of metal that is multiplied by using The Basin. They’re named the same colour as the metal is, “Coppers” are copper, etc. - “Coppers” are the lowest, as ten “Coppers” are a “Silver”. Ten “Silvers” are a “Gold” and ten “Golds” are an “Emerald”. - It is unknown wether the Thieves Guild during Puffin’s time is still running. (Hint hint, it is.) - There have been no wars.
Royal Family: Queen Arete: The current Queen of the ZephyrusWings. Daughter of Solstice.
Known Queens/Princesses/Important Others: Queen Cyclone: Oldest known dragon in the tribe. She guided the ZephyrusWings to the islands Exulans. Said to be “Daughter of Blood, Bone and Truth.”. Unknown how she died, as it is unknown what happened after the age of 108. Engravings in stone and songs tell of this history. Queen Hail: Daughter of Cyclone. Unknown how she ascended to the throne. She introduced the concept of migrating and the tribe took it well. Unknown how old, but killed by Snowfall 9 years later after getting the throne. Engravings in stone and songs tell of this history. Queen Snowfall: Sister of Hail. Unknown how old, but killed Hail for the throne. Was 68 years old when brutally murdered by her daughter Seagull. Engravings in stone tell of this history. Queen Seagull: Daughter of Snowfall. Brutally murdered her mother, suspected of cheating with an animus enchanted amulet that made every slash of claws hit true. It is unknown who killed her, how long she lived or when she died. Engravings in stone tell of this history. Queen Puffin: Unknown whose daughter. Unknown when she lived or died, but is known to have been after Seagull and before Breeze. Known as “The Thief Queen.”, as she had worked with thieves at the time. Engravings in stone and songs tell of this history. Queen Breeze: Unknown whose daughter. Invented many items still used in modern day such as lightweight armours and weapons and lightweight jewellery. She created the more artsy career path. Died of sickness at age 113. Engravings in stone, sculptures and songs tell of this history. Queen Bleak: Daughter of Breeze. Ascended to the throne as the only princess when her mother died. Was the first Queen in the ZephyrusWing tribe to not have any biological children, as she had a female lover, Leviathan. Unknown when or how she died. Songs and sculptures tell of this history. Queen Coast: Unknown whose daughter. Known as she disappeared one day with no trace of knowing where she went. Unknown how old she was when vanishing. Songs tell of this history. Queen Sleet: Niece of Coast. Died at 19 years of age to Stratus. Is said to have been a future teller. Songs and sculptures tell of this history. Queen Stratus: Daughter of Sleet. Killed her mother like many other dragons do to become Queen. Died at 32 years of age at the talons of Solstice. Memories tell of this history. Queen Solstice: Daughter of Stratus. Killed her mother in combat to become Queen. Was known as “The Alchemist Queen.” as she studied the effects of poisons and potions. Died 5 years ago at the talons of Queen Arete. Songs and memories tell of this history.

Imagery and Text.
Hi. This post is going to look at the use of imagery and text in advertisements to convey messages and tell visual stories to the viewer. This time around I am going to take a look at perfume, automobile, and cosmetic advertisements. Luxury brands.
Volkswagen
Tumblr media
This image is taken from an advertising campaign by Volkswagen entitled ‘Life happens with a golf’. Everything is centred around the car in the middle of the staged setting. It is a nighttime scene which would seem to cater to a younger audience which is interested in a nightlife scene. The design of the car is sleek. The metallic paintwork is very reflective in quality and the lights reflected therein would seem to be a metaphor for controlled speed. The buildings around it show a sense of stability and accomplishment through architecture. The buildings are, however, conveyed in bright, primary colours which convey a sense of fun and playfulness. Lifestyle is, therefore a huge motivating factor in this campaign.
Bleu de Chanel.
Tumblr media

This product is a luxury item. It is often old in airports and this particular image aims at this shopping situation. The blue colour is very moody and cool. The people in the image are obscured through a panel with lighting coming from behind. This obscurity would seem to act as a visual metaphor for detachment. It is almost as if the fragrance creates a filter from the outside world allowing the consumer to maintain their originality and freedom.
North Face.
Tumblr media

https://www.thenorthface.ie/
This is a beautiful and dynamic design by North Face. There is a wonderful use a curved leading line which draws the viewers gaze towards the adventurous individual walking along a dramatic and steep arete. The main text is slanted to suggest movement and dynamics. The main hierarchical emphasis is placed on the word ‘explore’ suggesting adventure, and also exploration of the image by the viewer. There is a strong participatory element to this design. The company logo is small and unassuming, yet prominently placed due to it’s proximity to the climber. It’s size in comparison to the scale of the panorama is a visual metaphor for pushing your abilities to the limit and overcoming adversity. I like the use of a slanted line to beside the words ‘never stop exploring’ which creates a sense of dynamism, instability, and adventure. Everything about this design is exciting and petrifying at the same time.
Thanks again for reading. See you next time.

Diomedes in the Iliad
Well,   socratitillated discussed some very good themes in the Iliad involving Diomedes, and now I want to vent.
Fine. I don’t really rant all THAT often, so it’s not like an occasional fit of verbosity is going to harm anyone.
Beware, a WALLOFTEXT awaits.
Because *sarcasm mode: ON* I don’t talk about Diomedes very often *sarcasm mode: temporarily OFF*
Tydeides is magnificent in a million ways, great and small. And, while I can’t express such things eloquently enough, you can be damn sure I’ll try.
  Calliope help me, I’ll try.
Because, while it is easy to get attached to the drama!!-generating hurricane that is Achilleus, or to Hector the devoted family man just dealing with other people’s fuckups, or to Helen who honestly didn’t deserve any of this shit, or to mr. Nobody (don’t be greedy, man, you got a whole epic just to yourself!) – sure, they are a riot to read and talk about, but…
The Argive king is never talked about as much as he deserves.
And it’s a shame, because he’s damn complex and not just “that badass who, with Athene’s help, made frigging Ares run to daddy.”
Which does not mean Diomedes is not a badass. That part is obvious. But.
There’s so much more going on with him. So. Much. More.
For example, I will never get over the interplay of courage and discretion in this figure.
Where does the former end, giving way to hubris and/or savagery?
What separates caution and cowardice, when they can look so similar to each other?
What does it take to stop before crossing that line, when almost everybody around you is letting their own personal demons run amok?
And why shouldn’t they? It’s not just a war. To them, it’s THE war.
Well, to Peleides (and Agamemnon, most likely) it’s also HIS war. HIS path to glory. That’s what’s matters, right? Right?
So, a certain very offended nereid’s child decides his erstwhile comrades should pay for that dishonour, and he has the means to make sure they do. Or, rather, Thetis does.
Individualism versus conformity, sure. In some ways. But Achilleus’ desire to affirm his value as a person, ironically, blinds him to the value of other individuals, so he messes up.
Agamemnon, of course, is a mess-up of cyclopean proportions in general.
Somebody has to step up. Somebody has to stand between the Achaean host and disaster and do everything possible and impossible to keep things from going to Tartaros in a handbasket.
Several heroes do. They work hard, they think hard, they fight hard. But among them, Diomedes is probably the one who can shoulder the greatest part of the burden. So he does.
Let others be unreasonable. Let others quarrel. There’s work to be done.
And so, when Ares takes the field, any fear, any hesitation, are trampled by an understanding that somebody has to go and stop an immortal God.
Good thing another immortal is there to help. But you can bet anything She would never favour anyone unworthy. Divine help is not chance – it’s kharis, and kharis is earned.
Many people have noted how seamlessly divine interference and human free will blend into each other in the Iliad. An angry, but still mostly rational, Achilleus is physically restrained by Pallas before he attacks the high king. Aphrodite and Helen have a complex relationship, mirroring Helen’s feelings about her own circumstances and Paris. Agamemnon is ridiculously susceptible to deception – his mind clouded now by madness, now by a false dream. Athene’s wise words are most often heard and acted upon by those who are wise themselves.
Some go so far as to suggest that the Gods and spirits are merely “metaphors” for more mundane things. But… no. Let’s stay away from that slippery slope.
The Iliad, without doubt, treats the Gods as real. But just as real are the very human emotions, motives and qualities the heroes act upon (or don’t). Nothing mutually exclusive there.
The Gods do not force Themselves on the world. They are OF the world. So, when They infuse a warrior with valour – the recipient will almost invariably be someone who surpasses others where that particular virtue is concerned. When good advice is given, it is given to a man of good sense. And the victim of every deception is, of course, an individual already in a confused state of mind.
Divine favour is not a whim. It is earned. An exceptional relationship with the Gods – or a particular God – denotes an exceptional individual. So, when we are told that Athene loves Diomedes (and Odysseus) more than others – this means she has a reason to.
He’s the kind of man who would stay silent when bombarded by undeserved insults because any more dissent would be poison to the Achaean host – but make a fairly demoralized army listen to him when the high king breaks down. He’s the only one who goes to save Nestor when everybody else is saving their own nether regions. He’s a mortal who respects the Gods, but will not allow that respect or fear stop him from doing his damn duty.
And Pallas, Who guides heroes, Who loves excellence tempered with wisdom -  Who IS excellence tempered with wisdom - harsh but just Pallas notices this mortal.
How can She not? He is unflinching – so Atrytone stands by him. He proves himself in battle – and Promakhos lets him go even further than he otherwise would. He is wise – and Polymetis whispers warnings and advice to him.
They are Goddess and worshipper, they are teacher and pupil, they are comrades who respect each other immensely, they are friends who know each other’s minds.
At the same time, they are a man and his sense of duty, maturity and strength of character.
Gods are both *who* and *what* at once. Pallas acts, but She also IS.
When She interacts with Telamonian Aias – staunch, reliable, straightforward Aias – it only ends in disaster. Because Aias also happens to be temperamental, petty and, frankly, childish.
  Not so with another hero.
The ruler of Argos is an excellent charioteer. He reins in his wayward passions the same way he deals with horses. Anger? Pride? Fear? Good. He controls it. He makes it work in his favour. Tempers each important decision with an understanding of its potential consequences.
That iron self-discipline is more than an individual’s adherence to societal expectations. It’s also more than a desire to keep away the madness his father lost to. While both factors are present, his own innate sense of responsibility is what determines his behaviour.
It would have been easy to say that he simply respects Agamemnon’s authority and therefore avoids conflict when insulted in rhapsodia IV – oh, Peleides would not be so meek!  But then, we see Diomedes speaking out against the Mycenaean king’s cowardice when nobody else does. In both cases, he does what needs to be done for the Achaean cause.
*sigh* Okay, said cause doesn’t look so hot from a modern point of view. But that particular can of worms should probably be set aside for later. Let’s just establish that the Achaeans actually have a complex set of reasons to be invading the Troad. Deal?
Tydeides is not just here for glory, or because he took that ill-omened oath. He is fully convinced this war is necessary. That’s why he’s ready to go so far to achieve victory. And, whether right or misguided, that determination is a thing of beauty – even if that beauty is cold and deadly as a blade.
When he promises to stay and fight even if all the other chieftains turn tail – he means it.
When he honours the guest-friendship of Oineus and Bellerophon, and reinforces that bond by exchanging gifts with Glaukos – he also means it.
He’s a scary, scary man, that Diomedes.
Maybe that’s the point. A warrior whom others have no reason to fear is useless.
But so is a warrior who is only a source of fear. Sophrosyne, moderation, is the watchword.
Arete, too. And kleos, and aidos. But it is the balance granted by sophrosyne that makes our hero’s other qualities truly shine.
Shine like the brightest star of autumn, bathed in the ocean’s waves, as it were.
This poetic comparison from rhapsodia V? It’s not just there to be pretty. When Achilleus or Hektor are compared to stars – the descriptions are entirely different, more fitting to their personalities. One can NEVER pay too much attention to detail with the Iliad.
And, when one does begin to hunt for all those details, all those subtle and unsubtle hints, one realizes, that this story does not belong to Akhilleus. Neither does it belong to Hektor or Agamemnon, or to Helen. It’s not even a tale of “rage” or “war”.
It’s a story where every figure, every theme, large or small, is a centre of gravity. Odysseus and Thersites, Priam and the daughter of Khryses, every soldier whose pathetic death is so meticulously described, every simile, every digression or story of times long past – are an omphalos unto itself, the navel of the world, even if just for brief moment.
Let’s just say, that among all those centers of gravity - I know which one interests me most.
But, let yours truly remember sophrosyne now, and fall silent for some time. There is much to discuss yet: the Theban cycle, those star metaphors we only briefly touched upon, the Doloneia, the chariot race, Italy and those pesky seabirds, but… moderation, right?

Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland
Kunsthaus Zürich, Swiss Art Building, Zürich Gallery, Swiss Architecture Photos
Kunsthaus Zürich in Switzerland
11 Dec 2020
Kunsthaus Zürich
Design: David Chipperfield Architects Berlin
Location: Heimplatz square, Zürich, Switzerland
After twelve years of planning and construction, the extension for the Kunsthaus Zürich is now complete. On 11 December 2020, the keys to the new building were handed over to its future user in an online ceremony. The house will open to the public in October 2021.
Designed by David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, the extension building adds a new, freestanding museum building to the Kunsthaus Zürich. The institution now represents the largest art museum in Switzerland.
The new building is located on the northern side of Heimplatz square, opposite the existing building. The clear geometric volume redefines the square structurally on its fourth side. The urban square is situated to the south of the extension and the new Garden of Art to the north as an open and permeable natural environment. An expansive entrance hall creates a link between these two new urban spaces. A visitor passageway running underneath the square connects the new building with the existing Kunsthaus.
All public functions such as the café / bar, events hall, museum shop and museum education services are arranged around the central entrance hall at ground floor level, while the two upper floors are reserved exclusively for the display of art. The diversely dimensioned exhibition spaces are characterised by a calm materiality and an abundance of daylight, placing the immediate experience of art at the centre of the visitor experience.
The architectural identity is modelled on traditional stone façades, as found in the existing Kunsthaus and many other significant public buildings in Zurich. The new building combines tradition and innovation through slender vertical fins crafted from local limestone with sawn surfaces and placed at regular intervals in the façade, embedding the building in its urban and cultural context in a contemporary manner.
David Chipperfield about the project: “The project for the extension of Kunsthaus Zürich brings together the fundamental concerns of museum design with the responsibilities created by both the urban context and the relationship with the existing museum.
From the outset, we have sought to invest the museum with the physical qualities that enhance the experience of the museum visitor while considering the civic nature of the building and the institution. We hope that the quality of the architecture, its spatial, formal and material resolution will guarantee that the extension, like Karl Moser’s original building, becomes an integral part of the physical, social and cultural infrastructure of the city of Zurich.
Christoph Felger, partner and design director, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, says, “Our vision for the new Kunsthaus Zürich was to create an accessible and social place to enjoy art, rather than an exclusive temple for art – ‘a place to go’ for everyone.”
Jan Parth, project architect, says, “The way we have selected and used materials follows the primary idea of exposing the load-bearing structure of the building, making it both visible and tangible. We have only added a few key materials, which dress the exposed concrete rather than cover it up: marble, brass and wood. In the construction phase, we were able to rely on Swiss craftsmanship, which draws on a long tradition and constantly pushes forward new developments.”

Ethics & Model Release Form
What are photography ethics?
Photography ethics are the principles that guide how we take and share photographs. Photography ethics are subjective, contextual, and fluid, meaning that every person’s ethics will be different because ethics are based on a person’s life experience and values.
Ethics change from one context to another: what might be ethical in New York may not be ethical in Shanghai. Ethics also depend on the type of photography: photojournalism has strict industry regulations about staging and digital editing, but the same rules do not apply to fine art photography, for example.
Even if a photographer’s ethical principles are resolute, the principles may be applied in different ways depending on the circumstances. For example: a photographer can firmly believe in obtaining consent from his or her subjects, but how he or she obtains this consent may be different in London than it is Mongolia.
Although everyone will answer ethical questions in their own way and according to the circumstances, there are some key ethical questions that are useful to consider when we use photography.
These questions relate to concepts like dignity, respect, and responsibility, and to how we apply these concepts to our practice. We might ask ourselves: how do I respect the dignity of the people I am photographing? What is my responsibility to my subjects? Do I have a responsibility to the audience?
Why do photography ethics matter?
If we take pictures that harm our subjects, no one will want to be photographed. If we manipulate our images and deceive our audience, no one will trust us. If we are not ethical in how we use photography, we risk jeopardizing the integrity of the industry as a whole.
On the other hand, ethical approaches to photography can help us to positively impact the world beyond our lens.
Photographs play a large role in shaping how we view the world. When we take and share photographs, we are shaping how others view the world. This is an amazing privilege and an enormous responsibility.
With the ubiquity of photography in our daily lives, it is easy to forget how powerful images are; but, in the words of writer and curator Marvin Heiferman, “photography changes everything in its path.”
When we take an ethical approach to photography, we increase our awareness of the impact that we are having on the world through the images we produce, and we are better able to focus our impact in a meaningful way.

It had never been Arete’s intention to marry into Nohrian royalty, but after Garon took an interest in her, she saw an opportunity to bring stability to herself and her infant daughter. Besides, it helped that the king was quite the charmer and didn’t mind raising another man’s child.
They met in Cyrkensia. Having the voice necessary to cement herself as a songstress, Arete had been fixing her makeup in the changing room after taking centre stage. It was then that Garon came and offered her dinner, having become enchanted with her performance.
