Another Bad Maximum Ride Opinion that I hold is that book 2 Ari was the best rendition of Ari out there and the only version I care about. Give me a seven-year-old with a perfectly reasonable desire and enough cognitive dissonance in his body that the way he goes about getting it is batshit fucking insane. My favorite lil guy. And then JP defanged him in book 3 :(

Btw, I'm going to start going by Ari and Theo! I like both names but I really want to try Ari out.

(also, I picked the Name because of Ari Batchelder from Maximum ride. He's an eraser which is a genetically modified person who can turn into wolf men :3 They're used as gaurds and soldiers for the school! The school is a secret orginization that creates mutants pretty much. I think at least idk the plot is going wild fellas. Ari specifically means a lot to me because I honestly relate to him a lot)

(I'm only on the third book though. shame on me 😔)

the most realistic thing about ari is that he sounds like he got all his lines from studying cartoon villains or bad guys in old hollywood movies. like, yeah this actually does sound like a 7-year-old trying to sound like a villain

Area man (Emperor Rudolf or Dr Jeb Batchelder) realizes the organization/empire he’s apart of is effectively a doomsday cult with plans that would result in countless death and suffering.

By either way of fulfilling a prophecy or literally just being the most questionable dad ever, he forcefully removes himself from his child(Alm or Maximum Ride)‘s life and continues to play the role of evil emperor/scientist man, with the intent of luring his child towards the evil cult in a way that positions said child as the leader of a rebellion and hero of the people.

(In Echoes, Rudolf is very much aware that this makes him 100% the bad guy and that peace can only be restored if he is defeated/killed by Alm. In MR, the narrative can never decide whether Jeb is actually a bad guy or really a good person who sometimes does bad things. This is not because Jeb is a well-written character, it’s because MR is bad and Echoes is better.)

In addition to all that, this guy has another kid/younger relative (Berkut/Ari) who has very apparent daddy/uncle issues with the way he’s always being ignored over a different kid who isn’t even around 95% of the time (and in Berkut’s case, wasn’t even aware the guy existed, let alone that he was his relative). Due to this lack of supervision, the cult swooped in and over time were able to turn him into a horrible fucked up murder monster that his sibling/cousin has to fight to the death with in the cult’s deep tunnel system. (However Berkut is the only one who respects the concept of death).

In conclusion: idk this is just really funny and because I’m (to my knowledge) the sole overlap between these fandoms I’m the only one who’s thought this hard about any of this

The near-final act plot twist of Echoes that recontextualizes all prior events and makes the protagonist (Alm) suddenly a great deal more important and chosen by a higher power than the audience is led to believe is, understandably, a bit othering and bothersome to some players. However I’ve never felt this way because what happens and what directly follows is almost exactly what happens in James Patterson’s infamous YA series Maximum Ride.

Sometimes I think about Ari and I just want to cry because of how tragic a figure he is.

He’s this chubby cheeked clumsy three year old and his dad abandons him with people who have no issue experimenting on kids. he’s three years old and he’s forced to undergo these procedures that make him look like a grown man and a monster. 

it’s very clear that people try to stomp the childishness out of him, but he’s still just a child. he’s only five when jeb comes back to the school. he’s only seven when the book series starts.

he’s seven when max breaks his neck and he’s seven when he’s resurrected. he’s seven when he undergoes a painful procedure that results in wings being grafted onto him.

he’s just a child. he loves getting mistaken for wolverine because its the one time people aren’t afraid of him. he just wants to be a kid and play a red gameboy. 

he’s seven years old and his “expiration date” arrives and suddenly he’s like a toy the school just got rid of. the people he tried to kill are the only people who keep him safe. 

he’s just a kid when he dies in max’s arms. he had only just learned how to read a little and how to spell his own name, thanks to her.

and then he doesn’t even get the right to stay dead, or to be at peace- jeb clones him and his memories and makes him into a weapon, again.

and he’s still just seven. only a year older than angel.
