Nation Observes Veterans Day and Salutes the Troops

November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday that is meant to honor all veterans of the uniformed services who served or are still serving during times of peace as well as war.

Veterans Day has its origins at the end of World War I when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the fighting ended with the signing of an armistice. In  1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day, Nov. 11. The day is also known as Remembrance Day in the Commonwealth of Nations. Wilson's proclamation stated:

"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

Congress officially passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

"Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and, whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations …."

The resolution also encouraged the display of the U.S. flag on all government buildings and urged appropriate ceremonies.

A congressional act, approved May 13, 1938, made Nov. 11, a federal holiday.

In 1954, Congress — at the urging of veterans' organizations — changed the name to Veterans Day to honor service members who had served in all of the nation's wars.It should be pointed out that Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day, a federal holiday on the last Monday in May, honors those who have  died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, observed on the third Saturday in May, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

the thing im happiest with this year, tbh! i put a lot of work and care into each slide—and i think it shows. at the same time, this thing i made to help my writing be more accessible just became something that required a commitment to read from its length. i hope anyone that read it found it worthwhile! i love rereading it myself.

jillian’s prophecy attacked again. new florence + the machine song, new bri edit. my motivation to create things has been really low so i tried to limit myself to only devoting an hr or so to this simple edit. i think its cute

it doesnt look like i did a lot to this edit, but i added a lot of lighting to it. it was nice editing a picture of lselle and it reminded me a bit of how fun it was to have something i wanted to badly in the game as the seagull minion

4. the loneliest

this one took a few days to complete. i listened to maneskin a lot in the car this year to keep my spirits up, so its ironic that this is the only song i made something for. i used a lot of bad pics to make it so it was a greater struggle than it couldve been, but im still happy w the way it came out even if it didnt linger in my head afterwards

it took me a very long time to write this and, altho its not remotely close to my usual vibe, i think its well done. mostly i think it was a v good exercise for all that never made it into the final product. i wrote three different carriage scenes to find the heart of whole piece.

i always loved the original carriage scene and im glad i got to actually finish it. i didnt get to do armistice day this year and i also didnt finish may other things, but at least i have this.

i have to confront more and more often that my drive to engage w ffxiv is almost depleted, and its a really really lonely feeling. i dont know what ill do in the new year about it. i know ill continue my literature work/research and keep drafting my outline for a complete transition of nol and eli into wwi austria-hungary. i want to write more!

A perfect book to complete on Veterans Day, ‘Stronger Than Steel: Soldiers of the Great War Write to Therese of Lisieux’ (2021), translated by Sœur Marie de l’Enfant Jesus (2014), forward by Fr. Dwight Longenecker. During the First World War of 1914-1918, the presence of Sister Thérèse in the trenches was extraordinarily tangible. The voluminous mail from that period asks for her support and a quantity of ex-voto was offered to the Carmelite Sister as tokens of gratitude. Part of the Archives of the Carmel of Lisieux are photos of soldiers placed on the grave of St Therese – sometimes by their mother. Due to the numerous requests from soldiers, Rome allowed the minting of medals before the beatification of Thérèse. Different souvenirs were offered to Sister Thérèse as tokens of gratitude: banners, medals, various items such as epaulettes, stripes, spurs, badges, toy soldiers, toy airplanes, toy military ships, etc. Several accounts told by soldiers by mail received during World War I were illustrated by artist Charles Jouvenot. The First World War saw some of the richest (and kitschiest) pieces of material devotional culture produced by the Carmel of Lisieux, where her sister Céline in particular, as an amateur artist and overseer of all the iconography produced by the convent for the growing cult, worked tirelessly to portray her sister in the trenches themselves as her rapidly increasing fame resulted in accounts of miracles on the battlefield. Voices in the Library

Alright so, this is one of the few WIPs in the list that I've started posting on ao3 (here)... though I haven't updated for over a year. 😅 It's on hiatus. I was unexpectedly gifted this fic as a sort of prompt by a fellow ao3 user in early 2021 (here) - they actually used to pop by this blog on anon. They were known as the lentil anon. 😂

The ghostly and historical elements of the prompt really appealed to me, I won't lie! I have a lot of this fic plotted out and do occasionally tinker with it. Even now, I'm not sure exactly how many chapters it'll be, especially as I set myself the task of having relatively short ones (around 1K each). 2021 was really not my year and so I can't pretend I'm actively working on Voices in the Library at the moment. However, one day? I do hope to write more and complete it. Hell, it's been so long since I posted the first bits I'll probably end up editing them a tad, just to improve the writing if I can.

The story? If I do it right (which is a big if) it'll make my fellow Rivyan shippers all weepy. 😂 That's the goal, anyway. It's about spooky shit in dusty old libraries and creepy university morgues, yes - and it's also about Rick and Vyv being very, very gay - but underneath that it's about the finality of death, even in a world with ghosts, and learning to live and love despite knowing it can't last forever. And also, it's about choosing to live furiously and passionately for those who didn't get very long to live on this earth themselves. IS THAT SAD AND PRETENTIOUS ENOUGH FOR YOU, SCUMBAGS? 😂

Everything about the hiatus being true, here's a tiny snippet from the unfinished third chapter:

“So, let me get this straight.” Vyvyan smirked to himself. “You spent Armistice Day – the first one, that big moment in modern history that historians love to wet their knickers over – running, screaming around the university quad like a girlie, covered in alcohol and stomach acid?”

There was a splutter of indignation from the spotty ghost in front of him.

“Well- of course not- I mean… that’s not all I did!”

It was Friday, almost midday, and Vyvyan’s first week of library service was nearly complete. He supposed he hadn’t done so badly, having managed to ignore the two resident ghosts here for four days. It was the next four months he was worried about now.

ahh, thank you for the kind words! i'd be honor to rec some series, although i'm not sure how helpful i might be in this particular genre. most of the kdramas i'm recommending below are ones that i've heard are good + fit your description (+ are also on my watch list, and i tend to be rather choosy about which dramas i put on my watch list, so i'm hoping that these are genuinely good!).

i feel like most dramas, unlike movies, are much more plot heavy than vibes--mostly because so many dramas are modeled in a way where they want viewers to stay tuned for the next episode being aired, but . . . out of the dramas that i have watched and picked to put on here, they're either more character-driven, and the plot's a little more . . . hm. circular? i'll go with the term circular, which can sometimes feel like no plot! in any case, here's my recs!

also, as a warning! since you asked for dramas that can be rather morbid at times, i've also added tw warnings about the specific morbidness/kind-of-sensitive things that might be included in each drama recommended.

my mister (available on netflix, viki, dramacool, kissasian, etc) 

my mister is always going to be number one on my list in terms of “not really a plot, just vibes” kdrama recs. there definitely is a plot going on, but to be honest, it’s definitely more emphasizing the characters: an older man, who’s working a mildly unsatisfying job, an a younger woman working as a temp within the same company. one thing leads to the next, and they wind up connecting to each other and also helping each other get through their struggles. 

this is just . . . a really beautiful show. it brought me so much comfort when it first came out in 2018, and it still gives me a lot of comfort these days. the characters in this show are quite honestly so real, but more than that, i think it’s a genuinely healing show--it’s all focused on how to live a happy life, and it’s just . . . gahhhh, there are so many scenes that just capture the desire to live while also not wanting to live. the romanticization of listening to someone breathe and so on and so forth. cannot recommend this enough!

2. lost (available on dramacool, qiy) 

tw: suicidal thoughts, suicide, miscarriage, domestic abuse. 

this is definitely one of those shows where like . . . not a whole lot happens, and yet every single episode feels like everything’s happening, just because of the sheer emotional weight behind each scene. unfortunately, lost was named one of the worst dramas to come out of 2021, but i can firmly, with all my heart, dispute that argument because this show was absolutely beautiful. (my personal belief is that snot-nosed reviewers called it the worst drama because they either didn’t understand the themes or because they didn’t like that they did understand the themes.)

basically, this show is about a young man and an older woman somehow connecting. the man is an escort of sorts, and the woman is a cleaner, although she once used to work at a publishing company. both are absolutely, utterly lost about where they should be in their lives. somehow, though, they start to bring each other comfort. 

this show is an absolute gem. it’s a bit dark at times, but i ultimately felt weirdly healed by the time i finished it. very quiet, and yet very comforting. it feels like someone’s putting a tangerine in your cold hands.

3. d.p. (available on netflix)tw: bullying, domestic abuse, suicide.

as you may or may not know, everyone who identifies as a male in south korea need to serve military time in their twenties. this is all because of the armistice between north and south korea (because north korea can technically attach south korea at any time)--and as a result, there needs to be ready soldiers on standby. in dp, you're following two young men who work as deserter pursuit officers, meaning that they're supposed to find the men who deserted their post while serving military time. (because that happens!)

this show is really . . . brutal. there’s some action, some humor, but ultimately, it’s just about how terrible the military is, and exactly why someone might want to run away in the first place. i put it under the “no plot, just vibes” list because the plot feels so circular in that way--and there’s . . . there’s def a vibe going on in this show, because the actors + the filmwork + the music just kinda suck you right into the world of these characters. (fair warning, it’s a rather isolating feeling. that said, though, if you’re in the mental place to take that, then this is a quick enough show to get through it, because it’s only 6 episodes i believe.)

4. move to heaven (available on netflix) 

tw: death, grief

while this drama definitely has a plot, i thought it was a lot more character-driven than anything else, which is why i put this here. 

this show is about an autistic young man who had worked as a trauma cleaner with his late father. now that his father’s passed away, the uncle comes to live with our protagonist, and together they resume their business. in the case you didn’t know already, trauma cleaners are people who clean up the living spaces of those who have passed away--so that leaves us with a lot of quieter stories about the lives that those who passed might have led. this is a very quiet show, genuinely beautiful and exploring grief and death in the most compelling way. 

5. my liberation notes (available on netflix, dramacool, kissasian, etc) 

tw: i don’t know, because i didn’t watch this one, but i’ve been meaning to! 

so i haven’t actually watched this show, although i’ve been meaning to, especially since it was written by the same person who wrote my mister. i did watch the first episode though, and i loved what i saw--i just didn’t continue because it seemed to hit a little too hard at the time and needed to not at the moment lololol

but from what i’ve gathered, this show is about a trio of siblings who all feel rather stuck in their lives at the moment. something something wanting to be loved, something something wanting to actually feel proud of the life they’re living. i’ve heard from my friends that it’s genuinely one of the best dramas out there, despite its low ratings--but then again, i don’t think low ratings mean anything in terms of quality. just from the first episode, i could tell there was a lot of care and thought put into the show, so i personally can’t wait to watch the rest, once i feel mentally prepared for it! 

6. just between lovers (available on viki, netflix, kissasian, dramacool, etc) 

tw: i don’t really know, because i also haven’t watched this one, but i think some big accident happens at the start? 

i haven’t watched this show either, although i’ve been meaning to for a while now! essentially, this show is about two people who were both impacted by an accident--and upon meeting each other, i believe they’re able to help each other work through the other’s trauma. from what i’ve heard, though, it can be rather heavy, but apparently, it made people feel slightly more hopeful, so maybe there’s something to be said about that!

“What… the fuck is this?” Hero asked looking at the thin metallic card sitting on their desk.

Sidekick must have wandered over while she was distracted trying to decide if it was safe to pick up; it was only a childhood around her sisters that stopped her from jumping when she seemed to suddenly materialize by her side, “Oh! That’s a finch!”

The teen’s excitement at having identified the bird inlaid on the card was not catching, in fact dread pooled inside her. “This isn’t Supervillain’s territory though.” She grimaced as the words came out with more edge than she had intended.

The card seemed to be a thin business card size sheet of steel, a delicate etching of a Finch on one side, and when Hero hesitantly turned it over she swore. Her day just seemed to be getting worse. Inlaid in the steel was a paper with a time and a place, the comic sans font at odds with the elegance of the rest of the card and the deep pit of dread consuming her.

It was Sidekick patting her shoulder that made her realize she must have sat down at her desk at some point, then the words she was saying filtered through, “They must have decided to come see the hero that’s been flirting with their spouse.”

“What?! Villain and Supervillain are married?”

“Didn’t you read my report? I know I mentioned it several times in your welcome report.”

“But they have territories on opposite coasts?? And it’s not in the official database that they’re married! How do you know this?” Hero refused to acknowledge that part of why she cares was because, maybe, she had started returning the Villain’s flirtatious when they fought.

Instead she chose to focus on the fact that now Supervillain, a significantly more willing to maim and kill foe than Villain, was in her city and had somehow managed to get their card onto her desk in a building full of government agents.

“Well, they call each other their spouse, but you know the higher ups don’t acknowledge nontraditional partnerships,” Hero could tell the girl was only barely holding back from rolling her eyes, and it would make her smile any other time. “I don’t make a habit of asking Villain about their love life, but from what I've over heard at Armistice they seem to have an open marriage?”

Hero pointedly ignored the way something in her loosened at that knowledge, “Has Finch been in the city before?”

Sidekick leaned against the wall by her desk, the teen’s causal behavior starting to annoy her, “A few times, man, you really should’ve read the report I gave you better.” Hero’s glare had her lifting her hands in surrender and continuing, “They don’t come around often, I’ve only seen them twice. Both times they let me see them on a patrol and then next I saw them they were helping Villain with a job. Knew they were gone when the news covered another job of theirs back in their territory.”

Just had the thought of Modern Au where Stede has always dreamt of owning a motorcycle and maybe in a midlife crisis he gers one, maybe he gets one for some other reason idk, but he heard about the biker gang who go around and help kids in abusive situations by becoming their friend and being on their side and scarier than their abuser and there to protect them. And well maybe Stede has figured out he was abused as a child or maybe not but he knows he wishes he could've had someone like that so he starts a branch in his town and ends up with the crew.

I think Ed hasn't heard of this org before and gets fascinated by it when they meet cause he For Sure could've used them in his life and realizes he wants to be that for kids.

This day recognizes the Armistice of November 11th, 1918. On the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the month the allied forces and Germany signed a peace treaty which we now celebrate as Veterans Day.

This quilted artwork is of 9 African American World War One soldiers of the 369th Infantry unit called the Harlem Hellfighters. The regiment was nicknamed by the Germans who called them Höllenkämpfer (Hell Fighters) because they fought with smiles on their faces and refused to be taken alive. They fought alongside the French because the white American soldiers refused to fight alongside Black men. During World War I, the 369th spent 191 days in frontline trenches, more than any other American unit. They also suffered the most losses of any American regiment, with 1,500 casualties. The Hellfighters fought with such bravery and courage under fire that many were awarded the Croix de Guerre for heroism.

Earlier this year the Harlem Hellfighters were finally posthumously awarded the Congressional Medals of Honor after more than 100 years have passed.

You will spend 7 nights / 8 days in North Korea plus one night on the train back to Beijing if you fly in and take the train back, 2 nights if you take the train both ways. This is an extremely comprehensive tour of the DPRK. We expect them to be held in 2021 though this has not been confirmed yet Pyongyang is marked with the big red star on the map. We can arrange private tour extensions in either of these cities if you like. KTG Travellers with locals at Majon Beach on one of our Victory Day Tours Route and Mapĭandong and Sinuiju are points we cross when entering/exiting the DPRK by train. In the very unlikely case of having more than 19 people in a group we divide the group into two and each group will have there own tour guides and private vehicle. We hardly ever have more than 10 people per group and we limit our group sizes to 19 people. Our group sizes tend to be the smallest amongst agencies specialising in DPRK tours. They also have a greta restaurant just across the hotel with fresh fish and seafood. It is located in the city centre and is at walking distance from the central square, docks and beach. This hotel is a blend of soviet and Korean styles. It offers us a great chance to spend an evening of fun with any locals staying there.Īnother night will be spent at the Songdowon Hotel in the port city of Wonsan. When heading to the less visited east coast, you will stay one night at the beach front at the Majon Beach Resort. The hotel complex sprawls all the way to the footsteps of Janam Hill. It was actually part of the old town of Kaesong and was cut off and turned into an area for tourists, both domestic and foreign, in 1989. You will be able experience what life was like in feudal Korea when staying in this courtyard hotel. We will spend one night at the Minsok Folk Hotel in the old part of town of Kaesong, near the DMZ. Unlike other hotels such as the Sosan Hotel, Ryanggang Hotel, Haebangsan Hotel, the Yanggakdo Hotel is not a budget hotel and is classified as a Deluxe Hotel. When staying in Pyongyang, we will be based at one of the capital's best hotels the Yanggakdo Hotel.Īs of 2019 there has been wifi available in the hotel's casino.
