This is probably not what you imagined when you sent this but it got away from me

"Fuck!"

Giuseppe felt a hot flash of pain, and saw the blood dripping from his hand.

In hindsight, he shouldn't have tried to catch a falling dagger by the blade.

He rifled through his bag, hoping he had something to wrap it in and that there would be no need to see the medic. He'd only been at court a month, the last thing he needed was a reputation as "the peasant farmer who can't even handle a knife."

He wasn't so lucky. All he had in his bag was a piece of parchment.

He wrapped it around his hand anyway. It would have to do.

"Are you okay?"

Crap. Of all the people who could have found him in this embarrassing situation, Arnoldo Gentilini was by far the worst. A rich, pompous ass who looked down on anyone he felt wasn't good enough for him, nevermind that his family wealth was only one generation old. For whatever reason, Enrico liked him, but Giuseppe wasn't easily swayed by pretty eyes and a big wallet.

"Fine." Giuseppe responded in a clipped tone, hoping to end this conversation.

"You're bleeding." "I can see that."

"Here," Arnoldo said, pulling a tin out of his pocket, "helps the cut heal. Then wrap it in some cotton." Giuseppe would have protested, but the cotton Arnoldo handed him was softer than his sheets.

"Thanks." Giuseppe said, because he would not be the rude one in this situation, dammit.

"Happy to help." Arnoldo replied, with an expression on his face that could be construed as...warmth?

Maybe he wasn't all bad.

(And maybe he was cute, too, but that was a thought for another time.)

Okay, your wish, my command: shoot anything you want about Giuseppe and Arnoldo

Thank you thank you thank you

The first thing you should know is that Taylor Swift wrote gold rush specifically to describe them.

Even once they're kind of friendly, it takes them a while to get together.

Arnoldo doesn't want to do anything that would make Giuseppe go back to hating him, he loves having his friendship too much.

Giuseppe still doesn't think Arnoldo would be interested in him like that--surely he would need to marry rich.

I should add that Giuseppe is in no way insecure about his station--he's proud of where he's from. He just assumes that all aristocrats are the same, and Arnoldo needs to prove him wrong.

Once they do get together, Arnoldo has full on cat instincts. Just, constant head on Giuseppe's shoulder, bapping him with sweater paws, letting Giuseppe curl up in his lap. It's adorable to onlookers, their friends are a little bit sick of them.

No one at court is rude to Giuseppe, because Arnoldo has enough money to ruin their lives.

(I'm gonna stop here and not talk about Arnoldo getting himself executed and Giuseppe being a widower, because I hate angst)

What moment did they realise that they were in love?

Giuseppe realized he was in love when he saw Arnoldo being soft and gentle for the first time. He didn't like him at first because he thought Arnoldo was just an asshole aristocrat looking down on a peasant, but actually Arnoldo just gets nervous with social interaction.

Arnoldo realized he was in love when Giuseppe told him off, because it made him realize that Giuseppe didn't care about his title/money.

What do they do when they miss one another? Is one more needy than the other/s?

Arnoldo is like a cat--he likes very few people, and likes to be around them when possible. He'll do the "put your head on your partner's shoulder" move until he gets attention.

(And, this is sad, but the question begs for it--When Giuseppe misses Arnoldo after his death, he has a box of old clothes/mementos that he'll curl up with and just cry.)

Do they tease each other? What about?

Giuseppe definitely teases Arnoldo about the whole "initially thought he was a jerk" thing. Like, Arnoldo will say something that could be construed as rude, and Giuseppe will be like "THIS! This is why people think you're a jerk!"

Also, Giuseppe has a habit of doing ill-thought out things, and as his loving husband it's Arnoldo's duty to mock him. They still speak of the lemon incident in hushed tones.

Slow burn. These two didn't get along because of some bad first impressions, but they are around each other a lot because they're in the same friend group, and slowly the perception starts to change.

What was their relationship, if they had one, before they got together?

Forced proximity to friends. The only reason they hung out at all was because they had mutual friends. Giuseppe thought Arnoldo was a pompous aristocrat looking down on him for being a peasant, and Arnoldo just lacks the ability to interact with people. Eventually, they do start getting to know each other better, become friends, Arnoldo starts crushing on Giuseppe, and then panics because he doesn't want to go back to Giuseppe hating him. Meanwhile, Giuseppe has realized he likes Arnoldo is very upset about it.

Who says 'i love you' first?

Arnoldo. They had been together a few months and were having an argument, because some asshole aristocrat made a comment about how, since Arnoldo's family has only been nobility for a generation, he should make a more prestigious match than "a peasant farmer." So, they're arguing and eventually Arnoldo does the "because I LOVE YOU!"
