People underestimate how stubborn Art is because he doesn’t talk a lot, and when he does, he usually speaks softly. Tashi and Patrick took minutes to reconcile in Atlanta, yet Art held out for YEARS and had to be cornered in the sauna to speak to Patrick at all. It’s also a safe assumption to make that the main reason things didn’t go further with Art and Patrick after the hotel scene is that Art wasn’t ready to admit he wanted that and Patrick knew better than to push him.

Patrick and Tashi took the fact the three of them would be better off together in stride, but Art held out with dogged determination to try to make the traditional heterosexual monogamous thing work. He persisted with that until all parties involved were so miserable they had to basically stage an intervention behind his back.

Art played tennis at an elite level until he didn’t feel like it anymore, and even though he wasn’t willing to say that until the end of the film, his actions did. Tashi couldn’t beg, threaten, berate or bargain him into doing his damn job with some level of competence to save her life. She had to figure out how to get him to WANT to do it, because MAKING him do it was off the table. Not to imply the other two don’t have their own character flaws, just to state Art’s actual issue isn’t that he’s just so submissive and agreeable, it’s that he’s stubborn as hell, but too conflict-averse to state it clearly when he thinks what he wants is in conflict from what others want from him.

Okay, this may be a hot take, but I'm so sick of the "Art immediately forgives Tashi and Patrick for cheating and they all live happily ever after with no issues" trope that's become common in Challengers fanfics.

I know that people are so in love with the polyamorous-coded nature of Tashi, Art, and Patrick's relationship, that they completely forget what's a reality in the story. It also spreads misconceptions about polyamory, because while poly relationships are ethical, cheating is inherently unethical. Cheating and polyamory are not synonymous.

Poly relationships can work because there's constant communication and, most importantly, there's consent with all parties involved. There should be, like in every relationship, a level of trust between everyone.

Now, Art and Tashi are assumedly not poly. They are in a monogamous marriage, which dictates romantic involvement of two people and two people only. Regardless of any feelings that may occur with a third or fourth person, they are in a one-on-one relationship.

Tashi and Patrick deciding to get together multiple times without Art's knowledge or consent breaks that fundamental level of trust Art and Tashi had. It's a betrayal. Art should be allowed to be pissed off. Livid, even. I know that Art is seen as a very passive, submissive character compared to how assertive Patrick and Tashi are, but he shouldn't be a complete doormat. Everyone deals with hurt and pain differently, but there's been a general consensus among the fics I've read that were like "Yeah, that happened, but nobody talked about it or fought and everything was fine!" which is so ??????

Let him be angry. Let him be hurt. Let him hold a grudge for a little while. There can be tension and arguments and conflict before all is well.

There can be consequences.

After Tashi saw Art give up in that hotel room, she couldn't let him lose. What Art was showing Tashi in that hotel room was that losing to Patrick would break him, and there wouldn't be a man left to be married to. In the face of that, Tashi swallowed her pride and crushed her spirit of fair play and begged Patrick to let Art have that match. She voluntarily gave up the chance to be with the best player and sun herself in the glory of his victory in exchange for the smiling face of the loser she married.

If it was simply about Tashi living in the reflected glory of the winner, letting Patrick win if he's the best player is the obvious answer. Once he proved his superiority to Art on the court, why not take up the better player on the chance to ride to victory with him? She didn't need to give Patrick any excuse to have his body, the first thing he said when she got in the car was that he had a hotel room waiting for them. What she really gave Patrick was the admission that tennis is not the love of her life, her boys are, and if tennis is going to kill them then tennis can go fuck itself.

ohhhh tashi's going to be so mad postcanon they start fucking patrck because obviously they start fucking patrick, they have that game that delivers on the innocent promise they made as teenagers and understood each other completely of course they start fucking patrick and it's a big juicy steak of enrichment chucked in a tiger's enclosure.

Tashi is raring to GO she's writing their press timeline she's writing their individual press talking points oh this is patrick we happened to overlap with him at a tournament and it had been a while but he and Art had been such good friends! we wanted to reconnect! Slowly ramp up the contact the public eye with Patrick and Art being hitting partners whenever they have downtime in the same city Tashi watching their matches with rapt attention

But for now. Tashi is buying adjoining hotel rooms reserved under separate names. She's getting herself new lingerie she's getting ART lingerie, she is thinking of a dozen things to piss patrick off on purpose and a hundred responses for when he is absolutely going to do the same she is making Schemes and Plans and instead it's the 2020 pandemic start and Patrick just moves in with them
