*George Grenfell*
_Knights of the Kingdom Series_
🛐📈📈📈📈📈📈📈📈 🛐
George Grenfell was born at Sancreed, near Penzance, Cornwall.
In 1875 he went as a Baptist missionary to Cameroon, West Africa, with Alfred Saker (1814–80), and thereafter did some exceedingly important work in exploring little-known rivers of the Congo Basin. In 1877 he removed to Victoria and explored the Wouri River and in the following year he ascended Mongo ma Loba Mountain.
In 1881, cooperating with the Rev. T. J. Comber and others, he established a chain of missions at Musuko, Vivi, Isangila, Manyanga, and other points, and in 1884, in a small steam vessel, he explored the Congo to the equator.
He established headquarters at Arthington, near Leopoldville, in 1884, and launched on Stanley Pool a river steam vessel, the Peace, in which he explored the Kiva, the Kwango, and the Kasai rivers, and discovered the Ruki.
He was awarded in 1887 the Patron's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for his explorations in the Cameroons and Congo.
From 1893 to 1900 Grenfell remained chiefly at Bolobo on the Congo, where a strong mission station was established.
After a visit to England in 1900, he started a systematic exploration of the Aruwimi River and by November 1902 had reached Mawambi, about eighty miles from the western extreme of the Uganda protectorate.
Between 1903 and 1906 Grenfell was busy with a new station at Yalemba, establishing mission stations and exploring the Congo.
His work opened up that part of Africa to the Gospel and many lives were transformed because of his sacrifice. By exploring the Congo, he opened it up for development and fought against the evil Belgian administration. Grenfell died after a bad attack of blackwater fever at Basoko on 1 July 1906.

the 1600s are very tricky
only the father is listed on the baptism record, and the father married someone the year after the kid was baptised - and I know it was a thing, common-law marriage an all that, but would this guy have married the mother of his kid the year after she was born, and not before, or is the new wife the stepmother - but there’s no previous marriage, except 60 miles away, and that’s unlikely but not impossible
ahaha wait
there’s a death that some year, mary wife of george - no reason given tho further up the page there’s a “by a mischance at Arthington”, and I should like to know what that means - anyway let’s see if I can find their marriage
Ah, no
But it’s in the right place, the right year, I’d say that is her

RICHESSE ET PARADIS
[MARC 10 :17-27]

Wednesday 28 March 1838
7 5
11 35
fine morning F41° at 8 ½ and went out for ½ hour with Robert Mann and his son James at the home footpath – breakfast in about ½ hour – asked Edward Chapman footman how long he could conveniently stay – till next week – till next Thursday? – it seemed he had fixed on his own mind to go earlier – said I thought I could contrive for him to go tomorrow – it would be a convenience to him (he much obliged) and would make little difference to me – spoke to A- she too had thought of taking Ibbotsons’ daughter for the time – all settled for Edward to go tomorrow – then  at 10 20 walked by A-‘s side (on her pony) as far as Listerwick pit – she rode forwards and I was sometime talking to George Naylor about the tubbing and to John Oates – and had Mark Hepworth there about A-‘s Langley farm – Mark to see about manure at H-x (going there) and to set 2 ploughs going tomorrow – should be ploughed 4 times – at 10/. per DW. per time Mark would have taken a crop of oats but agreed I was right about sowing down – could get the seeds in by the end of next month – then came home about 11 ½ - Mr. Adam had been waiting some minutes – signed the transfers of 5 more navigation shares at £432
Mr. Arthington ......... 2 at £432 = £864
Messrs. Clement Royds and George Dyson 2 at ditto = 864
Mr. George Pollard  1 at ditto = 432
5 ___________________________________2160-£5 half commission
then had the agent of Mr. John Preston Slater of Bridge-ends Leeds and paid him in full of slating at the Northgate hotel £302.13.9 - £100 paid in a/c  22 February 1836 = £202.13.0 by check n° 225. then wrote the above of today and staid in the house having had Holt before 10 who set off to Booths’ saying he (H-) and Garforth would be here about 11 – (‘tis now 12 ½) – at accounts ¼ hour then at 12 ¾ went down to Messrs. Holt Booth and Garforth – B- very poorly fitter to have been in bed than come – about ½ hour with them then left them to settle among themselves chiefly about Engine house – with Robert Mann and his son James at the footpath – the other 3 of Roberts’ men spreading  manure and Jack Green levelling after the scale carts from Listerwick on the embankment – opposite the house – at Listerwick and in the garden – said the gardener might order one new melon frame to his own fancy and might have 4 men till the end of May – came in again to Messrs. H.B. and G-  at 2 ¼ and with them till 3 – G- to give B- a drawing of the engine-house and B- to make his estimate accordingly and if possible all to be settled on Saturday afternoon – B- it seems thought the engine house would be about £100 and if there was a cottage at the top, it would make about £40 difference – Mr. Harper had arrived about 2 ½ - went to him at 3 – explained about the house ends – about gallery in the hall-front between the 2 tiers of windows etc. then went out – about and left H- with B- for above an hour – then afterwards with H- till he went away about 6 ½ - shewed him Mr. Bull’s bill – he never saw an engineers’ bill before – I had nothing to do with paying for fair copies – It was evident, he wanted to make a job – if he had been here 4 days his charge (the customary charge for all but eminent men from London) ought to have been 3 guineas a day including everything unless he had been put to some extra expense for journeys, but H- glad of 3 guineas-a-day and pay his own expense or at any rate 4 guineas a day including expense – and my offer to settle the bill for £20 quite enough, and very handsome on my part but these things awkward in a court, as a barrister generally made it appear that a professional man was the best judge of the value of his own time – H- obliged for the £400 instead of £300 and said I had by this paid him for everything but some small matter for here – I had certainly paid him for Northgate – shew him the morning Herald of 3rd instant and he will inquire about the Patent smoke consumer there mentioned – would have me put doors to the Laundry drying closet and try if it would answer – settled all about the wainscotting of the tower and passages – to be done like the top of the stairs in my tower-study – all done at Northgate but the wall at the top of the top court and the well – A- returned soon after H- went – out till 7 – then dressed and dinner at 7 ¼ - asleep in the dining room till 9 and then on the bed in the blue room till 10 – then coffee in 10 minutes and came upstairs and wrote the last 25 lines till 10 55 pm
very fine day F45° at 10 ½ pm
the gardener told me he and Sam and a lad at 10/. a week could manage the garden = 2 acres and flower garden and walks and all – and said the bits of [?] and such would pay for manure from the hotel – should have 10 or 12 tons a year – 12 tons at 7/. = £4.4.0
