The Vickers Family Art Collection Arrives at the Harn Museum
It’s moving day and the massive collection of Florida art has arrived at the Harn Museum of Art. Thanks to an extraordinary donation from Sam and Robbie Vickers, their once-private collection has found its public “forever home” at the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida. Over a few days, I was able to document the behind the scenes process as Harn staff excitedly welcomed a truckload of more than 1,200 drawings, oil paintings, and watercolors — the largest single art collection ever gifted to the university.
The inaugural exhibition, A Florida Legacy: Gift of Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers, opens Feb. 26 and runs through Aug. 1, 2021. Art lovers will be able to marvel up close at Robert J. Curtis’s iconic 1838 portrait of Seminole leader Osceola; Winslow Homer’s action-filled Foul Hooked Black Bass; John Singer Sargent’s masterful Palm Thicket; Martin Johnson Heade’s rare Oleanders; Ralston Crawford’s soaring Overseas Highway #2; and Jane Peterson’s vibrant gouache, Toucans, Parrot Jungle — to name just a few of the delights on view.

"No class of artists excels the hummingbirds. Their nests are wonders of beauty, delicacy, and architecture-plant down and dried flower petals hold together with silvery spider's web, exquisitely decorated with greyish-white lichens." ~ Royal Dixon, "Feathered Artists," The Human Side of Birds, 1917
Brazilian Hummingbirds
Artist: Martin Johnson Heade (American, 1819-1904)
The American painter Martin Johnson Heade started out as a portraitist and took up landscape painting late in life. He spent three years travelling around Europe during his formative years. This first Grand Tour marked the start of an itinerant lifestyle which he continued to lead throughout his entire existence. From 1840 to 1859 he lived in Philadelphia, New York, Saint Louis, Chicago, Trenton and Providence. His second trip to Europe at the end of the 1840s brought about a shift in his style towards a more sophisticated type of genre painting. He moved to New York about 1859; there he came into contact with other landscape artists such as his lifelong friend Frederic E. Church and began to paint landscapes. Despite exhibiting his work at the National Academy of Design on several occasions, he never became a member and nor was he particularly involved in the New York art scene.
Heade’s mature style, characterised by great precision and luminosity and influenced by the work of Lane, whom he may have known, was later dubbed Luminism. The numerous scenes conveying the calm and splendour of the salt marshes are the compositions that have earned him greater fame. This marshy ground provided Heade with the opportunity to capture changes in the atmosphere and light.
Possibly encouraged by his friend Church, Heade travelled to Central and South America (Brazil, Colombia, Panama and Jamaica) three times between 1860 and 1870. During these trips he painted exotic flowers and birds, in addition to scenery. The combination of these motifs resulted in his original still-life paintings of orchids and hummingbirds in tropical settings, which are acknowledged as the most original part of his oeuvre.
In 1883, at the age of sixty-four, Heade married and moved to Saint Augustine, Florida, where he continued to paint the tropical flowers that grew there. He died there years later, completely forgotten by the art world.

Tumblr media
if crushes were obvious then you were screwed beyond belief but no one could blame you.
you take one good look at chad meeks martin and tell me that he isn't sculpted by the greek gods and made human. i wont believe you , I had caught myself drawing once or twice or maybe 25 times. it was hard not to when he looked like that.
"ya know if you stare at my brother any longer, your eyes might just pop out of your head" mindy said as you stared at chad for a second longer then you should've. you snapped out of it and you shoved her shoulder with a laugh and she did the same thing.
"im not staring" you told her and she laughed
"you are but its cute, he likes you too ya know. its obvious to like everyone but you two" she said and you laughed.
"haha very fun" you exclaimed and she shook her head
"im not joking im serious" she said and you heard another voice from behind you.
"what are you serious about?" chad asked his sister and her eyes widened as you made eye contact and shook your head.
"nothing, its nothing" she said
"okay well anyways, y/n i need help with this art homework Mr johnson assigned us, can you help me later?" he asked and you turned to look at him
"yeah sure, ill be in my dorm just show up at any time" you told him
"is 5 okay?" he asked
"yeah thats fine" you stated and he smiled as he walked away. mindy grabbed your hands and looked in your eyes.
"okay this is your chance, you need to tell him" she spoke. the bell rang and you separated from her. the rest of the day it was slow and boring but when you got back to your dorm, you cleaned up your room putting clothes away, cleaning the dishes just simply making sure it was clean and didn't look like a pig lived there.
there was a knock on your door and you opened it to see chad.
"hey come in" you said as you opened the door wider and let him walk in. he walked in and you walked to the other side of your room as you grabbed your laptop.
"y/n" you heard and you turned to see him holding your sketchbook
"oh shit" you said under your breathe
"you draw me?" he asked and you nodded
"youre like a greek god, its hard to not draw you" you told him and he smiled at you.
"its amazing, how long did this take?" he asked
"about 2 hours but i admire you enough for it to be quicker" you stated and his eyes looked into yours. there was something deep swimming in there and you liked it.
"i admire you alot too, ive always liked you ya know" he stated and you looked at him. he put your sketchbook down and walked over to you. he held your waist and you put your hands on his biceps.
"can i kiss you?" he asked
"please" you said and he leaned in as he kissed you and you kissed him back. you both smiled into it.
"never stop drawing me" he said into the kiss
"theres more where that came from" you exclaimed and he pulled away as he pushed your hair behind your ear and smiled
"show me" he said and you nodded as you grabbed his hand and led him back over to your bed
you were happy you drew him
A/N: oh how in love with this and chad I am

the dinosaur artist by paige williams. i read a lot of science nonfiction because i love to get really mad. it's good! but you'll get mad.
the little friend by donna tartt. little friend a book about women by donna i was also shocked. stylistically similiar to the goldfinch. little miss 600 pages of doing fuck all as a plot. and i like this author i love her. NOT the secret history though.

In 2001 Queenadreena members had already clearly developed vision for what they want the next album to sound and look like. In a lot of the interviews it was constantly highlighted that they strived for simplified, raw sound, stripped off of all additional layers, leaving simple rock sound, often laced with anger and white noise. Album art had to reflect that simplified, raw direction. Blurry polaroids were rather a surprising transition from artistic, cinematic photos of Taxidermy, inspired by silent films. Polaroids are most often associated with instant capture of a moment in an amateur way, without much of planning. The cover and sleeve pictures were created out of cut up and arranged polaroid photos, creating surrealistic, distorted portraits. The cover shows Katie Jane crouched in a bathtub, disfigured, with head smaller and limbs appearing thinner than they in fact are. The back collage shows Katie’s legs, scarred and bruised after intense live show. There’s also a secret x-rated inlay photo, hidden behind the plastic part where CD is locked…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Katie Jane: „It is these small infinite frequencies that are begging to tell a 149 story. I can hear many voices and little melodies, like water flowing over a window or in a glass. It's very nice. And that tells me what I have to say. You have to listen very carefully, sometimes for hours. And if we listen and obey, there is a very coherent story waiting to be told. This is a blank page, like the desert or the ocean of infinite possibilities with nothing written on it, but everything, EVERYTHING, contained therein. Already very small, I could not sleep without hearing the water running. Must be amniotic, uterine, or something like that.”
„That's why you're in the fetal position on the cover?”
Katie Jane: „Yes, maybe. We made a series of self-portraits polaroids, very poor. There is something fetal but also something fossilized... which would have remained underground for a long time.”
The designer behind art of Drink Me and Pretty Like Drugs single (another collage of cut and bruised limbs, arranged in a way that at first glance you don’t really know what are you looking at) was Martin Andersen. Back in 2003, a Queen Adreena fansite called Room Eleven hosted a small interview with Andersen, in which he described how it was like to work with the band.
Martin Andersen: The Queenadreena project was an interesting one. First of all I have been working with many bands over the last 5 years, mainly for records labels ‘4AD’ and 'Rocket Girl’ Records. Queenadreena has been one of the most professional, entertaining and open-minded bands I have worked with. The band had been recommended to look at my portfolio by Glen Johnson of Rough Trade Records (and lead singer of 'Piano Magic’, whose CD cover I had designed a few months before).
We set up a meeting in a bar in Primrose Hill. After looking through the work we decided to start working on their releases DRINK ME album and PRETTY LIKE DRUGS single. The band had taken numerous polaroids which they posted me - to start working with. The basic concept was to show the band in a 'angelic yet dark-surrealist way’. I shot different portraits of the band and printed some of their polaroids. I cut all of the material up and re-composed the different images together. I then re-shot these compositions to create new surreal portraits of them (with stretched arms, eyes, faces etc). I especially like my photographs of Katie in the bath (DRINK ME) and the one of Crispin (who I think like a punk-biblical-character). In total I took between 50-70 photographs. We had a great working relationship, managed to get drunk every time we met and I have enjoyed seeing them live numerous times (THEY ROCK!).
