If you know me real well you likely saw this coming ^^; probably going to start drawing my character(s) of the year at the end of every year now because this was actually really fun *^* Nobody did it like these two in 2023 and I just know they will continue to hold a special place in my heart even beyond 2023 🫶🏼❣️

The Unit Songs’ Chaotic Creation

The production of the unit songs in pjsk is very puzzling. For those who are unaware the unit songs are what the UNTITLED songs eventually become. They represent a unit’s identity and they also mark the end of the unit story chapters. These songs were also the first 5 (or 6) composed for the game and it seems the devs didn’t do too well on their first outing.

The strangest thing about the production of these songs was how little background the artists where given about the units. Pinnocchio P once said

They gave me the phrase "reconstruction of an abandoned amusement park" along with the character designs, and then I made it freely!

Mafu (N25 composer) gives us some more insight with this quote

“Keitai Renwa was the first song I submitted for sekai. I tried to bring out the atmosphere of the unit with this song. I was told to write one with more intensity to represent Mafuyu’s dark worldview. I then created a second song Mirai which was released first.” (2)

From these two quotes we can see the severe lack of communication between the developers and composers. It’s very unlikely that they even spoke beyond the initial meeting until after the songs were completed.

In Pinno’s case he was given misinformation. The amusement park isn't even abandoned in the story. It’s possible reconstruction is a mistranslation and it should be translated as revitalization or similar. Either way the WxS main story isn’t really about the park (smile of a dreamer fits this better). The story is focused on what drives WxS to perform and their relationship to each other.

A personally entertaining fact is on the jp sekai site there’s a little message from all the unit song creators. They all say variations of “I’m excited for the future of sekai. I hope you like my song.” Pinno’s is a bit different (I’m paraphrasing here this is not a true translation)

“SEKAI looks promising there’s a lot of potential. The theme of this song is reconstruction of a theme park”

It’s interesting that the abandoned part is omitted here. Could just be SEKAI devs took it out or Pinno didn’t say it here for whatever reason.

In mafu’s case he had to do more work then originally agreed. Which could have been avoided if the devs had asked for demos or a first draft of the lyrics. Thankfully both songs were added to the game so his work didn’t go to waste.
