its crazy that all the mario kart world tour tracks in mk8 have like. really weirdly scaled npcs so htey're like just big enough for the scale thing to be noticeable but also not enough where it feels like A Thing.

anyway i have no particular feelings about it one way or another. it very vaguely reminded me about this meme i saw once that was like "tourists be like "omg singapore is so boring" and then they only go to these places" and it was a map of singapore with like. basically the singapore speedway mario kart region circled out. which like strictly speaking is TRUE but like literally what the fuck are you gonna do outside of the downtown area and changi airport and the zoo area. the other day they opened a hotel near my old workplace that was like a repurposed train cabin and literally every single time my coworkers and i walked past it to get to lunch or whatever all we would talk about is how much dick you'd have to be smoking to stay at a hotel in that area much less one that's like a singular cramped ass mrt cabin thats split into like 4 rooms and it costs over a hundred dollars a night.

i cant even do the thing of like "REAL JAPANESE REACTS TO MARIO KART TOKYO TRACKS!!!" because like other than saying Damn This Shit Shure Is Accurate (which it is) i cant really say anything about whether or not it nails Da National Character or not because its like who gives a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. like half of the major landmarks in the track are just shit built in the last 15 years or shit that is like. actively embarrassing (the singapore flyer and the merlion).

2/6 Week 2 & 3: “Studying” Abroad and CNY

After settling in the first couple of weeks and site seeing most of Singapore’s attractions, the last couple of weeks have been more about finding good food spots, bonding with friends, and trying to keep up in my four modules.

I have finally hit the “studying” part of studying abroad, and it has definitely caught me off guard after not worrying about school for almost a month. NUS classes/modules are all on a bell curve, which means only certain amount of students are allowed A’s, B’s, and C’s. This results to a very competitive culture among its students that is very different from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and many US schools. 

All my modules are graded on group projects, participation, and the final exam. For each class I needed to find a group, and luckily I was able to find a groupmates relatively easy for each class. My FIN 3207 class thus far has definitely been the most challenging class as the professor goes through so much material in such a short amount of time and the amount of outside studying and reading to truly master the content is very extensive. 

Despite school starting I have still been able to visit the Botanic Gardens, the Merlion, the Spectra Light Show, ArtScience Museum, Chinatown, and celebrate Chinese New Years (CNY) with family friends. 

I had to take the typical Merlion pick, despite how cliche and common this picture was. Visiting the Marina Bay is always an adventure because there are just so many things to do! On one side of the bay you can visit the famous Merlion and on the other side you have the Spectra light show, Marina Bay Mall, and the ArtScience Museum. 

For CNY I was lucky enough to be invited to a family-friend party in the morning. Since this was my first time celebrating CNY, it was a great experience learning about all the different traditions that are involved. After the party I joined my friends in Chinatown where we were able to experience the festivities that it had to offer.

Exploring Singapore is never complete without the wonderful street food it has to offer. I was able to visit Hawker Centers (food courts) such as Maxwell Center, Old Airport Road, Newton Hawker Center, and Chinatown’s Hawker Center. Many of the places are home to some of the best dishes Singapore has to offer ranging from it’s famous Chicken Rice to Sambal Stingray and satay to just name a few. both Chinatown and Maxwell Center each had a stall with a Michelin star and Newton Hawker Center was featured in “Crazy Rich Asians”. In addition, I had the opportunity to eat Durian. Contrary from belief the smell was actually not that bad, but it still did not taste that appetizing in my opinion. My friends told me that was because the Durian was lukewarm so I guess I won’t be giving up on Durian quite yet.

Anyone who studies at NUS I highly recommend exploring, traveling, and having as much fun as possible within the beginning months of the semester. Although the content of the modules are difficult, most professors do not assign a lot of assignment during the beginning of the semester. While creating my schedule I realized that the majority of my papers, projects, tests, and assignments start to pick up toward mid-March.

This report was for a British Council-funded project attempting to describe artscience collaborations in the Philippines. For this particular report, I highlight a specific argument that I made—that the science community can benefit from engaging the arts and humanities across various activities embedded in science processes, not just in the end for communication purposes. The reverse—that arts and humanities can benefit from engaging the sciences—can also be easily argued for, but I left that for a future report.

The Emerging Futurist Residency is a research and creative program hosted at the Bukas Space by the University of the Philippines Open University and supported by Space Ecologies Art and Design. The residency focuses on supporting and nurturing exploration of multidisciplinary teams of artists, scientists, designers, engineers, and activists in futures thinking and futures literacy in the Philippines. The residency aims to deconstruct dominant paradigms about the future and develops alternative models through a combination of critical inquiry and hands-on experimentation.  As far as we are aware this is the only residency program in the Philippines that explicitly supports foster futures thinking: deep time, deep history, intergenerational thinking and planning, critical imageries of the future, critical digital literacies, speculative design, and radical pluridisciplinarity.

ArtScience and a Fancy Meal

Yesterday's main attraction was the ArtScience Museum: a celebration of the merger of science and art.

This museum is full of trippy exhibits that showcase the use of technology to create mind-blowing art.

We also made a few last-ditch attempts at properly experiencing Singaporean food.

We went back to the stall with the award-winning curry puffs, only to learn that it's closed on the weekends.

Thinking that maybe we needed a little help from a local, we booked a city food tour. But it was cancelled due to a family commitment!

Finally, when all hope seemed lost, we stumbled upon Waku Ghin: a restaurant at Marina Bay with not one, but TWO Michelin Stars.

I tell you what: this place earned its stars.

This wagu beef dish included some unknown ingredient that made it taste like childhood. You've redeemed yourself, Michelin critics.

We couldn't exactly go straight home on a Saturday night after a meal like that, so we capped off the evening with a visit to a rooftop brewery. The world's highest microbrewery! What a view.

And... that's it. We called Uncle after that, and pretty much all we did today was get a travel covid test and watch Outlander. Tomorrow it's onward to Malaysia.

You did it, Singapore. You wore us out. I will not soon forget you.
