I fell into the HeroForge pit again and decided to make Kadira and a few of the WotR Gang. I blame splurge this ALL on finding out that you could hold something in a tiefling/devil's tail. I poked around and while I only made Arue and Daeran, everyone but Lann could be made on HeroForge and that's due to modeling would have a hell of a time with his two sides.

As such Hero Forge is pretty adaptable even on the free mode! I have pro because I'm going to need to make a LOT of NPCs and HeroForge Avatars are more forgiving than picrew, despite both being the same thing.

Save and Play - Save your model under a different name if you're worried about losing an affect or pose you really like! Then go and play all you want. Mousewheel is Your Friend: You can zoom in and catch all the details you need! Play with the Models Linked: Following the link and opening it open places a copy of what someone else made on your broswer or cache. If you give Daeran black hair and pink skin, it wouldn't effect mine at all! They're great to explore what people have done and what can be done.

Mind, someone could download a copy of what you made and use it for themselves and print it out. However the HeroForge community is pretty chill and all this stuff is owned by a company, so no one will make money off what you did.

The sun has long since set by the time Piper and Aivu return home, and Piper expects to find the secluded cottage dark and quiet. As Aivu descends from the clouds, however, Piper spies candles burning in the windows, and she quickly guesses that she and Aivu have something of a welcoming committee waiting for them.

She is not disappointed. The moment Piper steps through the door, she’s greeted by a haphazard arrangement of mess and color. A transformation has come over the main room of the cottage, with every surface and scrap of furniture covered in draping blankets and sheets. Piles of pillows stand as makeshift pillars, extending the construction down the hallway and, presumably, to the bedrooms in the back of house.

Piper barely has time to take it all in before a small head pokes out from the canopy of blankets, and a familiar voice chirps in delight, “Mama!”

The child quickly disappears from sight, though the rippling of the blankets betrays her location as she dashes through the quilted maze, until finally she arrives to wrap her arms tightly around Piper’s legs. “You’re back!”

“I am,” Piper agrees, leaning down to return her daughter’s hug. “And what is all this?”

“This is my kingdom,” Iris declares, sweeping her hands out to indicate the blankets. She beams at the announcement of her creation, as proud as any nine-year-old could be. Laurel shifts in Arueshalae’s arms, but the younger child has always slept like a log, and even the commotion of Piper’s arrival hasn’t awakened her. That doesn’t stop Arueshalae from cradling her carefully, as Piper leans close enough to give them both a kiss on the cheek. “There you are- I should’ve known I’d find you in the heart of a palace.”

“That’s not the palace, Mama, it’s the enchanted forest,” Iris corrects in an exasperated voice. She points to the knitted tiger positioned at Arueshalae’s feet- a well-loved gift from Seelah. “That’s why Tiger is here.”

“Of course, how silly of me.” Piper says as Arueshalae giggles at Iris’s admonishment. “Now, tell me- is there a kitchen in your kingdom? It’s a long flight from Drezen, and I’m starving.”

Iris perks up once more. “I’ll show you the candy castle!”

She scampers off down the hallways of blankets, and Piper gives Arueshalae a wary glance. “Candy castle?”

“That one was Laurel’s idea,” Arueshalae admits, slightly sheepish. “Our daughter can be very persuasive- she takes after you, after all.”

A distant scuffling noise stirs up near the window, just before Aivu eagerly pokes her head inside. “Did I hear something about a candy castle?”

Candy castle or no, the hour is late, and it’s not long until sleep catches up with everyone. Piper ends the night curled next Arueshalae, with Iris asleep in her arms just as Laurel is nestled in Arueshalae’s. Arueshalae yawns and rests her head against Piper’s shoulder.

“Sorry for the mess,” she murmurs, brushing a long strand of dark hair from Laurel’s face. “You know how restless the girls get. This project kept them entertained for days.”

“Don’t apologize,” Piper says. “Of course they’re antsy, they’re children. I’m sorry I was away for so long.”

Iris fidgets in her sleep, reaching up to scratch at the stubby horns growing in at her forehead, and Piper strokes her hair until she calms again. Piper smiles as she looks down at her daughters: Iris with her growing horns and silver skin practically glowing in the dim light, Laurel with her rosy coloring and long tail poking out from beneath her blankets.

Piper and Arueshalae have been careful in giving them both some distance from the legacy of the Crusades. The girls know the basics of the story- it would be impossible to avoid the topic entirely- but there is much of the history that has been softened in the retelling. In the thick of Mendev’s bustling cities, the gory tales of war would be bound to find their way to the girls…and then there’s the fact that it’s Mendev. Piper knows things have come a long way for tieflings, she’s made sure of that…but still.

Out here, there is at least a sense of something close to normalcy. Piper just wonders how long it can hold up.

“We can’t keep them hidden away forever,” she says softly. She looks around at the chaos their daughters have orchestrated through the house, and she can’t fight a smile as she nestles closer to Arueshalae. “Besides, I think the question is whether Drezen is ready for them.”

Dad of Light/My Dad

So I just found out about Dad of Light.

For those unfamiliar, let me set a baseline for you. I'm a big fan of Final Fantasy 14, as mentioned previously. I get really into being a part of a community, and love playing the role of tank. Carrying my party through a dungeon and taking the hits as we fight back the forces of darkness suits me perfectly.

The game's been around a long time. The first version came out in 2010 with A Realm Reborn relaunching the game in 2013.

You may have heard some stories, about how fans of Kentaro Miura all dressed up as Dark Knights and formed a line in the major cities in the game to mourn his tragic passing.

And that's but a single facet of this lovely game.

Dad of Light is a Netflix project that came out in 2017, following the tale of a young man (Akio) who bonded with his dad (Hirotaro) over Final Fantasy when he was a kid.

Years down the line, Hirotaro suddenly quits his job without telling his family. Akio is concerned and decides to try to reconnect with his father by purchasing a PlayStation 4 and Final Fantasy XIV for him. With the help of his Free Company and friends, Aru and Kirin, Akio plans to use his character Maidy to befriend his father and discover why he quit his job.

Now, I haven't watched this yet. I literally just started, and it got me thinking about how much I love Eorzea, and how much I love MY dad.

See, stories about fathers and sons ALWAYS fuck me up. For a lot of reasons, but I think chiefly because I wish my dad was like any of these dramatized men. That he could apologize, mean it, and change his behaviour.

He's done part of the work. He apologized for being a rage monster when I was a child. For holding me to impossible standards that even he would have struggled to meet. He meant it when he took me aside in June of 2021 and told me he was sorry.

And the behaviour DID change, for awhile. We worked together at his tech startup (which is still just he and I), and we were doing amazing work. I was learning web design and constantly improving my own skills, because I wanted to be able to help him more.

Then his therapist retired, and he stopped doing the work to be better.

Then he put my wife and I in an incredibly uncomfortable living situation with my sister and her husband that mostly entailed her being entitled to everything, and when we'd put boundaries in place she'd just lose her shit. Then dad would step in, say something like "Don't make me choose between my kids" and fuck off like that would fix a damn thing when she was breaking the lease, up to and including bringing her then boyfriend in without even asking us if he could move in.

Then when we left that situation, he said he couldn't afford to pay Seattle wages.

So I left the company (under the impression that I had been let go), and I lived off savings for a few months after we got here. I scrounged for work, and had recruiters telling me I was worth way more than I was looking for, but that they couldn't find me work that paid the figures they were telling me I deserved.

It took awhile for us to even get things sorted here. We'd moved across the state to escape from my sister, and so that my wife could finally go to college. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't find a job that fit me. I worked for a temp agency for a bit, did a job for a big company answering emails. I figured it'd be fine, it's just emails. Turns out the customer service culture at the company was something along the lines of "All of our customers are literally the worst, we wish they'd just go away, but also we have to pay attention to super fine details when doing our emails so..."

I lasted ten days. Then I asked for my job back with Dad. Things have been better between us since he no longer owns our home or our car. But the condescension is still there. The frustration when I don't get topics he sees as simple.

He may have meant the apology, but a lot of the behaviour didn't change.

It makes me wonder what it would be like, if it started snowing in hell and I convinced the man to take up the mantle of Warrior of Light with me. Would he even let me tank for him? Or would he just run ahead and get mad when he died? Would he make fun of me for playing cross-gender? (Slicks M'Harbeck is the coolest, fucking fight me.) Or would he let me take the center stage and just let me help him for once?

I dunno.

I often say I love my dad, but I wouldn't wish him on anyone. None of my friends like him. My wife doesn't like him. But I love him. I know who he is, how he can be. He raised me, after all. It's hard to care for him because of his judgmental perspective, the way he was raised, all of it. I know some of his trauma, and it's not like I blame him for it.

But if I can be better, why can't he?

And stay that way?

I miss my dad.

Update: Just finished the first episode. I spent the entire time crying. I'm so incredibly jealous of the relationship that Akio and Hirotaro had. And so happy they could have it.

OMG LOL thats so funny. i remember him.... he was genuinely one of the best characters in future diary even though he was obviously just a ripoff of kaworu nagisa. (white hair, red eyes, gayboy in love with the protagonist, non-human/higher being, gets fucking decapitated). but maybe the fact that hes lifted from a different better show is why hes a better character 💀

Paladin Keith meets Commander Keith of the Voltron Force in chapter 5 of “Defenders of the Multiverse” (Prompt: Leader)

The black-haired young man with the scar on his right cheek lay unconscious in Black Lion’s cargo bay, stripped of his red and white armor and covered with a thermal blanket. His handsome, youthful face was partially hidden by a breath mask that was connected to a small emergency respirator. Commander Keith studied the young man’s face, one he had seen before, but only in the disturbing nightmares that had awakened him for several nights in succession. His wife, Queen Allura of Arus, woke from sleep when he did, her own dreams haunted by visions of the Altean princess in peril. It was strange to finally see the youth he had only ever seen in his strange dreams. The young man stirred. When his eyes fluttered open, he saw that they were grey, not bright blue like his own.

“Hello, Paladin Keith. I am Commander Keith Kogane of the Voltron Force.”

The young man’s breathing quickened beneath the breath mask. He turned toward the speaker. “Thanks for rescuing me,” he said hoarsely.

“You’re safe now. We’re not far from the planet where your friends are. Apparently the Dream Dimension made some of your worst nightmares a reality.”

“Space...tried to kill me,” he said.

Keith chuckled. “Yes. That’s your Lion’s element. I experienced your nightmare before it happened, you know. That’s how I knew where to look for you.”

“Space is a big place. How did you find me?”

“My team has been tracking you Paladins since before we entered this dimension. I was really concerned when you ejected from your Lion. It was if you were under some kind of spell.”

“I don’t remember doing that,” the young Paladin said wearily. “I only remember being in space and feeling terribly...alone.” He turned his face away.

“You’re only as alone as you choose to be,” Keith said to his younger counterpart. “I have seen them, you know. Krolia, Shiro, Coran, Hunk, Lance, Pidge, and your Princess. They mean everything to you. And they love you more than you realize. Maybe when you finally accept that fact, you can finally become the leader they need you to be.” And with that he returned to his pilot’s station.
