There’s a lot to be said about making the comment to living in one place. Walking upright on two legs makes us very mobile. Given land bridges without political boundaries it’s been calculated that it takes only ten years to walk around the entire planet. Yet posting that, staying in one place has its rewards. We moved here in ‘78 and we’ve yet to exhaust everything Sonoma County has to offer. We’ve found that everything comes to us. New people, new cultures, great experiences, new friends and fantastic food. Consider the reason we visit Tuscany, the Great Wall Of China , Paris or Machu Picchu. It has to do with the history, the culture, the effort, the work of the people who lived in those places. Making a commitment to the place you call home can make it a place worth living a lifetime. jesmonite

in an effort to expand my knowledge of practical processes and making, as well as to encourage new ideas within my progress throughout projects and the design cycle, i’ve been signing myself up to as many process workshops as i see fit (and see as fun!). so today i attended a workshop learning how to make up and cast jesmonite.

jesmonite is an acrylic-based composite that acts a lot like concrete, but drys a lot smoother and cleanly due to its acrylic properties. the type we used, jesmonite ac100, consists of two products (a powder and a liqud) that when mixed together become a pourable substance that begins to set in about six minutes. what i love about it is it’s endless colour possibilities. you can mix strongly concentrated dyes into the made-up jesmonite to taint it these beautiful bright, almost pastel-like shades, exactly the hues that i love to use within my work. 

above are the samples that i produced, which are about 5cm by 5cm by 0.8cm in size. the great thing about jesmonite is that it dries so quickly (although this can hinder any detail i might want to add to the pieces) and so it can be layered very easily. that’s what i did to create to create all of these pieces. in the top right piece, i tried to create a grided texture with the blue, but couldn’t get in completely neat as the jesmonite was starting to gel as i was creating it, but i think that the contrast of the blue against the yellow makes it really pop as a piece. it’s almost like a ceramic material, as it’s fragile enough that it could break under pressure, but unlike clay, it doesn’t need to be fired, and so you can cast different objects into it, which i have done. throughout the 3d workshopare loads of little scraps of all sorts of materials, so i scavenged some bright pink acrylic and chopped it up into smaller pieces and put it in the piece on the top left which i think is my favourite of all the samples. the piuece on the bottom right also contains found samples, but instead the red-ish pieces are chips of left over jesmonite, which works well against fresh jesmonite as all the piece is then the same texture.

i am not entirely sure if these pieces link to my current project, as i feel it could be difficult to communicate a narrative with these sort of samples. but as an abstract portion of curation, these are brilliant. the bright colour possibilities go very well with the work i’d like to create, and they work well as a piece of texture to compliment a flat piece of communication.

if i have time in this project, perhaps i could recreate the mottled texture of orange peels as they really remind me of home. the bright smell, the warm colour, and especially the nostalgia of christmas that they bring for me.

Today I watched this YouTube video of Yi-Fu Li about "a sense of place". I was aware of this term when Kelly Merks, Virtual Expats podcast's most recent guest, but I did not realize where the phrase, or who the phrase came from. Listening to Li's many examples of American ideas of rootedness and place has me thinking about my own placelessness. Or is it placelessness? In my geographically plentiful life I used to vacilate between a longing for one place and a sense of being able to call every place my "home." I would like to tell you that I have resolved this indecision but what has happened instead is that I have stopped thinking in this false dichotomic way. I do want a home, a culture that I feel comfy and supported in AND I do have one, but it is not a geographic place. It is in the intersection of people like me who dont have one geographic place: in our collective placelessness I feel this comfort, this support, this sometimes spoken and sometimes not spoken understanding of the complications of this point of view. Of this life. Of this lack of land as the very definition of "home." Today I also listened to the Big and White podcast, where two American women chat about their time in Nepal @bigandwhitepodcast . This episode was about things that do NOT change when you move abroad. And a strong part was on not blaming your host country for things. Our place is not the problem, nor the solution. I love this kind of expat wisdom. It applies to all of us really but expats have a louder version of these issues due to our physical displacement, unplacement, replacement. (Displacement has such a negative connotation that I wanted to play with it some, what do you think?)
