Jojolands 13: Ohana Means I'll Set Your Ass on Fire

Dragona dropping some great truth about the absurd in this bizarre adventure. We finally got a peak behind that mask. I love it and I hate it, if you've read the chapter already you know what I mean. We'll get to that, because this right here isn't spoilery and it was such a cool nugget.

I love the way Dragona talks about the "absurd." Chance moments that alter one's life for better or for worse. The things that just don't make sense. Especially paired with Dragona opining about nearly losing their heart in the same chapter that last part about hearts being destroyed hits hard. I'm definitely sure we're looking at a trans narrative here and one we'll see play out. The chapter does a good job of implying what we need to know. Nudges at an early theory you've been changing your body with Smooth Operator. We ready? What follows is no place for beginners or sensitive hearts:

Oh HELL yes! As if I needed a reason, these two were well on their way to top Jojo status and now the dynamic duo of the Joestar Siblings are definitely there. Mean girl sets her sights on a much more timid Dragona who we now know looked way more masculine at 14 than 18. Talking physical build and not just fashion. You know, I don't expect an 18yo to have all that figured out and with this I do think we'll see her keep coming into her own. But holy shit that was fucked up and I sincerely hope we can get through the rest of this with no more sexual assault on my Jojos blorbo.

If they do...Jodio will fuck you up. Set a whole damn bus on fire! And while I'm not looking forward to having to relive the impetus in the inevitable anime adaptation, since we've already had the cop I kinda like the perpetrator being a girl here. For one because it shows a side of this kind of bigotry that often goes underrepresented. You see a little more space made typically for trans men who had bad experiences with men prior to coming out, largely because it tends to overlap with those who found a comfortable half-step in something like a radical feminist group. But this sets up Dragona pretty well for a realistic other side of the coin to that. Your experiences with bullying might make you a little skittish of girls your age, you keep a foot in this criminal world even if we keep showing you (not unlike Okiku) as someone who doesn't fit super well, all this would certainly explain why you'd gravitate towards a figure like Meryl Mei. Why there's great potential for drama if she shows a nastier side. It's all great for a trans story that justifies still figuring yourself out through it...but sticks to a fairly realistic path for a lot of young women who find themselves running with gangs.

All that said, Jodio you absolute freak. Burning the whole bus is metal, it's scruffy, he's protecting family. Doooooope. These two are fantastic and I can't wait to explore their story, their dynamic more. Jodio & Dragona's sibling bond is the beating heart of this part. As much as I love Kiku/Izo & Killua/Alluka yeah this is gonna be a banger. Speaking of, this chapter was also the second time we nudged at Jodio getting shit for looking fey too. These two are ride or die for each other and their awesome mom Barbara Ann. How this all ties into their family falling apart and their desire to become filthy rich? No need to ask...

In lighter news. They. When Meryl learns of the other lava rock that got smashed. We're all clear on who's the brains and who's the firepower in the dynamic duo right? I trust Meryl as far as I can throw her and she's a big lady. But for now everything seems on the up-and-up. Charmingman seems to have passed the sniff test and yeah it looks like he's just going to hang around. I like this new setup. Scouting a shadowy company to see if we can get more lava rock.

All in all one of the best chapters of Jojolands so far. I'm loving it, this is the exact direction I hoped it'd go. The backstory made this pretty heavy and I hope we can have more fun with this gang on the new excursion.

and im really liking the silly energy of this part as a whole, i like everyone dynamics and I enjoy that everyone is very fluid in their interactions with each other. Like you can tell who gets along better than others but I do enjoy seeing everyone have a lot fun interactions with each other. its very cute

im also like,, i do really like Charmingman and what of his deal were getting to know so far, im excited to see more. but im also like.. kinda wish he was younger. not for any serious reason, just that i think it be funny to have another young fiesty scamp on their group. BUT him being the oldest now is super funny..

My first thought on reading the new chapter yesterday was how soon I was going to get a Charmingman request. 3….2…1…and here’s an anon asking. Not trying to offend! I like him already, I just find it amusing

So this is a bit of speculation on my part, I can see him being overprotective/ a bit obsessive. But I’m leaving it at a couple things for now.

There’s quite a few options you can go about with Charmingman. Since his brother ends up going missing I feel like that could contribute to his Yandere behavior. Of course he may come to you and mention something’s wrong, the police aren’t any help so at least you could lend him an ear?

It soothes him just a little to have some support and have someone believe that his brother was gone just like that. No accusatory behavior of foul play, you nodding along and agreeing that something “took” his bro. Depending where you were, whether you were part of Jodio’s gang trying to steal that diamond from Rohan’s place or just a friend in the area his reaction is pretty similar.

Likely he’s going to protect you no matter the cost (whether you ask him too or not doesn’t matter). He might not help himself in consistently trying to keep tabs on where you are, or hey why not just hang out with him all day? If you just met, he takes a liking to you wondering about you potentially dropping out from this mess. You probably should it’s for your own good, he’d be right by you eventually.

Also if you were friends beforehand Charmingman is likely not going to let you go to where his brother disappeared. He’ll definitely drill it into you it wasn’t a normal way to just “vanish”. He’d hate to have to tie you up or something to keep you still, but I’m certain he wouldn’t hesitate if he really felt the need.

All that he went through probably brings a potential distrust towards anyone that might want to hang out/date. He manages to stick himself into most situations, distract that other person and force them home. (There could be something physical involved but he wouldn’t tell you this of course).

Day 17:

The kids had a blast today! We showed them how to make elephant toothpaste, and they went crazy! I hope parents don’t mind the future messes….

-Sugar always enjoys a good story time on the rainbow rug. The babies never pay attention, but its good to see them moving!

-Jonathan ate all of his breakfast today, even the pear slices he thinks are icky!

-Fugo’s strawberry flavored pacifier finally ran out of flavor. I couldn’t get the backup from his carrier fast enough!

-Suzi Q was a big help during cleanup. She got to pick a prize for it!

-Little Charmy got into his mom’s makeup before daycare today. How old do you have to be for makeup wipes?

Are the things under paco's and the cat owner guy's eyes, wounds or they just wear matching goth makeup (I love to think it like this lol), or some gang member stuff or something else? What do u think

I like to think it's matching goth makeup too.

Realistically, the closest thing I can think of is eye black, which is used in sports. They're used particularly by American athletes to reduce glare when they compete, especially if they're in a stadium with a ton of lighting. They're typically black lines under the eyes that can be as messy or clean as desired, and athletes would design their eye blacks to have words or different shapes either for better functionality or fashion. Some are premade tapes while others are drawn in by hand. Sports organizations are rather strict with what designs can be used during play but fans have adopted the use of eye black by drawing them on themselves with more flexibility in terms fo design.

Given how sunny Hawaii is and both boys being athletes involved in physically demanding sports that require being able to see things well (Paco is a fighter and Charmingman does triathalon things), I wouldn't be surprise that their makeup is actually eye black to enhance their performances.

Jojolands: A Charming New Addition

Well that was quick. We start off with some backstory, you know shit gets real when Araki opens with a geography lesson. We did end up recruiting the new guy! As people have pointed out, early villain turned ally with a lost little sibling fueling his backstory is immedately reminiscent of Polnareff which is neat. But here he is, the one and only Charmingman! Which of course its a musical reference...to The Smiths. Eh, I thought they were pretty pretentious even before Morrissey went all racist so not my favorite nod in this part. That's Dragona and you'll have a hard time topping my love for Smooth Operator. Coast to coast, LA to Chicago...

Where was I? Oh yeah. My lack of fondness for The Smiths aside, and I can at least respect that's a solid reference with some lyrics that play nicely into his backstory, Charmingman is a welcome addition to round out the five-man band. I loved the aesthetic of his stand in action and am more than ready to see more. This bit of him and Jodio was so fun too, immediately asking what kind of music he likes instead of other more pertinent questions. I still have high hopes Jojolands will feature my favorite core cast. And his backstory reinforces the sibling dynamics that seem to be a core idea for this part. I'm also not fully up to date on Part 8 but we have a potential rock human? Also gotta note we're keeping up this theme of hostile police which is pertinent to a modern day American setting.

Moving on, I love this dude. Just materializes out of the aether when a cutie is talking about souvenirs. Accurate. And lookit! The fancy schmancy watch made its way back to Dragona just as hypothesized. The lava rock works in mysterious ways. A lot of this chapter was getting us back home and introducing the new guy, but especially with talking about similar concepts in Egghead for One Piece it is intriguing we skipped over the conclusion to the fight and we have this bit of weirdness. But where that really came to a head...

Aww yeah Meryl Mei! It's not just that she's pointing out oddities in their return. There's an ominous edge to this, I don't know how much we should trust this lady so it troubles me that Dragona seems to be the one closest to her individually. How does this one girlboss do so many different jobs? Worth pondering given this series has a huge running theme of bad guys with time powers. Just something to think about. Hope she's not wicked because I do like Meryl but you could have a great twist having her pull the rug out from under the gang.

Still, we're back home and ready to likely embark on something new. I liked the trip to another island, fun picking up a new friend and working Rohan in the way we did. The panels of him tossing money around on the beach to study the lava rock were classic Rohan weirdness. Personally I hope we get a couple of chapters now to play with the characters a bit. Flesh them out more. Usually Jojo's parts spend a little time on that after the first big leg of the story it seems. Something like Jodio & Dragona taking their mom Barbara Ann out and having to deal with a weaker stand battle could be solid or just letting them live their lives as some weird things happen. We have such a good group and setting I'd hate to spring too fast into heavy plot stuff while we're still figuring this part out.
