This is a bit old now, but I finally got the energy to finish this.

I was thinking about a post Moth made about War in Black Velvetopia and started thinking about Asma going into Sinclair’s mind to undo Darwin’s brainwashing

So, here’s my idea for a Psychonauts type level for Asma to navigate to undo the brainwashing

The Reckoning belongs to @year2000electronics / @askthereckoning

So, I think Sinclair’s normal mindscape looks like a huge library, with books holding all his memories and thoughts. This library is populated by his mental versions of himself, the other vices, Duncan, Valdez, and Marius.

There’s definitely a chained up archive that holds his memories of his father’s town and his time as Patience, as well as a monstrous version of his father.

But War’s mindscape probably looks a lot like Black Velvetopia, having been changed by the brainwashing. I feel like it’d be a theater that’s very Spanish inspired in terms of decor and architecture.

The theater is populated with fans who adore War and are constantly cheering him on. All of them are wearing fully face covering masks, and if you take the masks off, there’s nothing under them. None of the denizens of War’s mind have faces, just smooth surfaces. None except the Darwin constructs and mental versions of Darwin.

Not even War himself truly has a face. If you tug too hard on his domino mask, his whole face ends up coming off, revealing just a black hole.

There are propaganda posters on the walls encouraging obedience to Darwin, kind of like the propaganda posters in Loboto’s mind in Psychonauts 2.

War performs onstage every so often to please his fans, usually doing things like dancing or fighting challengers, who are usually more faceless fans or green constructs. A mental construct who looks like Darwin serves as a sort of manager, keeping War “on schedule”. Or more likely, keeps him busy. There are versions of Fantine and Constance who perform with him sometimes, but they’re essentially just cardboard cutouts that only exist to make War look better.

Asma has to blend in with the adoring fans and try not to arouse suspicion, because if one of the denizens realizes they’re not supposed to be there constructs made of green magic appear and try to kill Asma. These constructs resemble Darwin, and are clearly a result of the brainwashing. They can be fought off, but they always eventually reform.

I imagine Sinclair’s memories would be locked away in the basement of the theater, guarded by more green constructs. There are chains keeping the door closed, all kept on by a comically oversized lock glowing with green runes.

As Asma makes their way deeper into the theater, I imagine War would start showing up to try and stop them. He has his usual bravado at first, but it starts to falter the further in he follows. He starts to get desperate and the green constructs begin to increase.

Also, the deeper Asma goes, the clearer it becomes that the theater is a construct that should not be there. Everything becomes increasingly unnatural and strange, that strange green magic leaking out of everything.

Along the way, I think Asma would probably have to destroy certain mental anchors that are keeping the brainwashing in place. And definitely burn some propaganda posters.

I feel like the last obstacle Asma has to overcome is a mental version of Darwin guarding the locked room to Sinclair’s memories.

War would probably also be there, but I don’t know if he’d really be up to fighting. The closer he gets to the locked memory room, the more freaked out he becomes. Because the mental Darwin was very clear that War isn’t allowed to come here. He threatened to do horrible things to War if he went to the locked room, I imagine.

Asma fights the mental Darwin and wins. When the mental Darwin is destroyed, he drops an oversized shiny key, which Asma picks up and fits into the oversized lock on the door. The lock and chains fall to the ground and Asma is about to open the door, only for War to try and stop them.

War insists that Asma shouldn’t do this. That Darwin will punish them both. Asma, who’s probably pretty exhausted by this point, says that they’re absolutely going to kick Darwin’s ass in the real world too. Darwin can’t stop them. They’re not letting him mess with their husband anymore. Then they open the door.

Inside the door is a library, looking very much like Sinclair’s normal mindspace, but much more crowded. There are books on the shelves, piled up on the floor. Asma takes War’s hand and drags him inside. They start to recount the story of how they met, how they defeated the archangels, what their wedding was like, finding the books that correspond to said memories as they go. War listens, saying nothing.

Finally, Asma turns to War, asking if any of this is ringing a bell. War doesn’t immediately answer. The green glow has gone from his eyes. Asma reaches up and removes War’s mask.

And this time, when Asma takes War’s mask off, it’s just the domino mask that comes off.

Asma pauses for a moment, then quietly asks, “Siggy? Is that you?” There’s another pause before Sinclair smiles and nods.

It’ll probably still be a bit before the brainwashing is completely gone, but Sinclair is more himself now. He remembers.

Asma only leaves when they’re sure the brainwashing isn’t immediately going to snap back into place again. Then they get to hug their husband in the real world again.
