Finally returning to the comforting confines of his oasis, Asra let out a hollow sigh. His body felt tense, rigid from the scene he had fled back at the shop. The wandering magician shook his head, fluffy white hair bouncing up and down from the movement. He´d almost destroyed everything, almost put you at danger, again. The guilt sat heavy on his shoulders, weighing him down as he left deep footprints in the sand.

Oh how he wished to be with you again. Everything had changed, back then. The overwhelming joy of seeing the lost life returning to your body had been quickly displaced with utter horror. Your missing memories put a deep hole into your existence, much like a puzzle missing its most important middle pieces. Even after three years, day after day filled with hope that you´d wake up and remember, that your eyes would light up in recognition and fill with tears as you hugged your lover, your current status hasn´t changed.

Asra wasn´t allowed to dream, to let his mind wander back to what was. Whenever he did, his heart ached for you like it was on fire, demanding your closeness and love. Your relationship was in the past, hopelessly overshadowed by the dulling, numbing present. A warm breeze swept by, engulfing the young wanderer as if to hug him, yet the thought of you still didn´t leave his mind. Here was the only place when he showed weakness and spoke his deepest, secret wishes.

Yet, while it was a paradise, the dark parts of his minds were represented as well. They hid in the deep rain forest, in the smallest cracks and holes, whispering his name whenever he passed by. Even though he himself had created this place, there were things even Asra couldn´t control.

The more striking was his astonishment when he suddenly came upon a river. There was a tent-like, open pavilion on the other side, similar to the ones in Nadi´s palace gardens. Next to it stood a resting silhouette, emitting a calming aura rather than a threatening presence. On closer inspection, it looked like a perfect reflection of himself. Maybe he was imagining it because when he blinked, the figure had vanished.

Without paying it much thought, Asra lifted the satchel over his head while he waded through the waist deep, warm water. The warmth of the river still did nothing to relax his body. He´d felt on edge for days on end. Once leaving the water, he stepped out of his pants, underwear, socks and shoes, eager to try out the soft-silky interior of the pavilion. For a second he wanted to turn around and explore it together with you. You´d have laughed at his unplanned swim, in fact Asra heard your warm laughter ringing in his ears. Oh how he wanted to share this moment with you, to bring you here.

Throwing his pocket somewhere on the fluffy carpet-ground, he let himself fall into the sea of rose-coloured pillows. They felt nice against his naked skin, so silky and cool. Experimentally he rocked against them a few times, just to be almost immediately overwhelmed by sleep. It was no wonder when he the constant thoughts tired him out. They were painful, reminding him why he had fled this time. The reason was so utterly careless that he had debated on never coming back. A week ago, he had just poked his head into your bedroom, wanting to wake you for breakfast. You had read your favourite book, engrossed in the lines like you´d always used to. When, after some moments which Asra had used the seldom opportunity to stare at your beautiful features without disturbance, you had lifted your head and smiled at him in such a heart-warming, familiar way that he had wanted to tell you everything right then and there. It felt like his heart melted in heat right on the spot and while his lips had already formed the words, thankfully his voice had failed him. I love you.

Episode 13: Cogito, Ergo Sum

For the first time in years, the entire Acorn family was back together – and not only that, but they were all together in their original home. Despite his promise to the contrary over a week before, Elias had finally given in to the urging of, well, everyone, and brought his family to Castle Acorn. For his part, Adam does in fact make an overt attempt to be absent whenever Elias, Megan, or Alexis come out to socialize, but this habit is quickly nipped in the bud by pretty much everyone else asking him to stay. Although Elias seems annoyed by this development, he never speaks out against it, either.

With the whole clan present, Sally and Sonic agree to stay a couple days longer so they can really take advantage of everyone being together – especially since they’re all secretly wondering if ‘Max’ is dying and just not telling anyone about it. This notion ends up being the elephant in the room on several occasions, but no one elects to actually bring it up for fear of ruining what might be the last time they all get to enjoy their time as a family.

Overall, this reluctance really works out in Adam’s favor, because it spares him having to come up with an explanation. Instead he’s able to put 100% of his energy into just making the time as wonderful as possible now that he’s not fretting over anyone missing. He goes out of his way to be cordial to Megan and wastes no time in apologizing for his atrocious behavior in the past – and despite having been on board with at least trying out this visit, Megan finds herself completely unprepared for the gesture. Adam assures her that if there’s anything he can do to make amends in some way, he wants to know, and makes a point to proudly refer to her as his daughter-in-law (and Alexis as his granddaughter) whenever he has an opportunity. Megan is, quite frankly, astonished by this display; the last time she’d interacted with King Max, his presence was so negative and intimidating that she’d gotten sick with anxiety. She’d never imagined Max was even capable of being so kind, so gentle, and so considerate – she’d never even seen him behave that way around Sally, and she’s the one that tried the hardest to please him!

Megan is so moved by ‘Max’s’ sincerity that she encourages Elias to spend at least a little one-on-one time with him, but Elias repeatedly declines. Failing that, Megan soon hatches a plan with Sally and coordinates everyone suddenly having some matter to attend to at the same time… leaving ‘Max’ and Elias alone in what was once a well-populated room. Still as disgruntled as ever, but also determined not to be a hypocrite by being the type of asshole he’d chided his father for, Elias concedes to at least sit down near him. Maybe not beside him, but at least in his vicinity. Neither speaks, but that’s okay; just having one another nearby is enough for now.

A couple days later, Finitevus warps into the castle in the middle of the night, hoping to hit a time where the family would be sleeping. Adam shows up a moment later and appears more relaxed and content than Fini’s ever seen him. He dreamily states that he’s got exactly what he wanted, and even if Hamlin DOES pull the plug on him when the visits are over, that’s okay. He’d successfully brought ‘his’ family back together, and it had already made a dramatic impact on Alicia’s health. It had all been worth it.

Fini warily congratulates him but also warns him not to give up in the 11th hour. Adam snaps back to serious business mode, stating that he definitely wasn’t giving up; if anything, he was ready to fight harder than ever. Now that he’d gotten a taste of having ‘his’ children home, of having gotten to play with both of ‘his’ grandchildren, and having seen just how much stronger and happier ‘his’ wife had become, he was willing to do anything to keep it going. He wanted it, and they all deserved it.

Satisfied with that answer, Finitevus gets down to business: He needs help locating Rotor. He’s attempted to check in with him repeatedly over the last couple days, but all signs indicate that he hasn’t been back home – and it’s generally not a good sign when someone goes to see Hamlin and then doesn’t come back. Fini assures Adam that once they locate Rotor, the last few puzzle pieces will fall into place and everything should be fine.

However, Adam then asks for a description and where he should look. Fini, equally puzzled, affirms that he’s talking about the Rotor that had once been on the Acorn Council, aka the person that created him. Adam can only stare in confusion for a moment, before slowly reciting that Hamlin is his admin. Fini asks if Adam really doesn’t know that he has two admins, and Adam firmly tells him that he doesn’t. It’s just Hamlin.

Fini proceeds to give Adam a rundown of Rotor’s role in his life – that he’d built him from a back-up of Nicole, that he’d given him the ability to project, even just the fact that he continues to check in on him to this day. Not only does Adam show zero spark of recognition to any of this, but he also becomes increasingly agitated. Finitevus asks why he’s upset, because surely he must realize that this is good news! This is an extra person to help, and furthermore someone knowledgeable enough to make much bigger leaps in progress!

Adam snaps and begins shouting at Fini that he does NOT have a second admin, because if he did, he’d have known about it! He’d have SOME kind of data file on him by now! There would be SOME sort of a digital footprint of his movements if he were still logging into the system! Adam has absolutely no record of someone named Rotor anywhere in his mainframe, so it’s simply not true!! Fini calmly tells him that this just means Rotor’s data was erased; maybe it was Rotor himself covering his tracks in the system to minimize his involvement should the situation go public, or maybe it was actually Hamlin intentionally keeping Adam unaware of the other admin to limit his ability to get help. Either way, it’s just a simple misunderstanding.

For Adam, though, it’s not so simple. Adam goes into a complete meltdown, questioning who and what he even is anymore. Was he a person, or just a bunch of code? Over the last few months he’d certainly come to feel like a real person, but what was ‘real’? Hell, what were ‘feelings’?? He hadn’t even HAD those until Fini and Nicole had patched them in.  And now, just when he’s feeling the most complete, he’s suddenly realizing how utterly incomplete he is – that what ‘he’ is can be changed in a single keystroke. His memory can be altered, his personality can be manipulated, his actions can be forced against his will – if he even has a ‘will’ of his own. Even now, at the height of his emotional and intellectual development, he’s still not ‘real,’ he’s just filling in for someone who used to be real.

Grabbing him by the shoulders, Fini firmly assures Adam that he is real. The fact that he can be manipulated in so many ways, if anything, just makes him more lifelike than not; real people can have their memory compromised, or their personalities affected, or be put up to things they wouldn’t otherwise do. Max Acorn – the original Max – is a perfect example of exactly that. Years ago, he actually wasn’t so dissimilar to Adam himself, but his time in the Void changed him. He became a wholly unrecognizable person, and it’s that change that tore his family apart. The fact that Adam is inorganic doesn’t matter; the fact that he’s not the original Max Acorn doesn’t matter. What matters is that Adam is a person – and he’s the person that the Acorn family needs. His family is now stronger than it’s ever been, and it’s because HE took the initiative to mend it, not because of anyone else pulling his strings.

If nothing else, Fini insists that, no matter what happens from this point, Adam is and always has been learning, developing, and changing – and that’s what people do, not machines. Adam remains silent for a moment, but eventually thanks him. He then takes a moment to add a comment line to his code quoting Fini’s sentence, then copies it to various locations in his database; even if things go south and Hamlin tries to scale him back to basics, hopefully at least one copy of the comment will survive and be there to guide him, regardless of what the new ‘him’ turned out to be.

         Perfect and precise, that’s how it ought to be—–  Careful planning in creating the perfect atmosphere with just the right timing. The grand kind of gestures you’d expect to be taken straight out of a romance novel  —–  Unfortunately, he was no Casanova or Romeo. And with the stars above as their witness, they could swear they had never seen as much love and devotion as in the eyes of this one man that now gazed solely upon the woman of his dreams; the love of his life.

     The warmest touch upon ivory and so effortlessly the subject of today’s celebrations has her attention snatched from all the loud partying to the one boy who single-handedly defined the entire meaning of celebration and joy in her life 

     — as he had been the cause of her happiness, the fire fueling the smile now unwavering upon glossed lips, only widening further to hear the eager request to steal her away to himself from the rest of the world, but how could she possibly mind when he had been her entire world.

     While his own safety she had feared for, her own is shown little to no concern as she held no doubt, he would catch her, just as he always did. 

     Mesmerized by the dancing of warm hues, her gaze reflects of utter trust and devotion but rather than voice her response, the actions of the petite speak for themselves; with her vision concealed she leaps instantly into his arms, only opening her eyes to meet silver irises when as promised, his strong familiar hold engulfs her protectively. 

     ❝You caught me~❞ soft shy giggles voice what had been evident as gentle digits tenderly brush the star kissed cheek of her hero, before nodding all too eagerly; whatever he had for her to see, she knew there’s no one she would be safer with.

     With the slowing of the vessel they had been travelling upon, a petite figure would slowly detach itself from the warmth of her love, and with wide eyed curiosity, would delicately bend forward, head tilting in wonder to get a better view of the glowing land they approached; an enthusiastic child she resembled, unable to wait to reach their destination but peeking in complete astonishment; one that is immensely portrayed when indigo hues finally switch from the land to her tour guide for the day. 

     ❝Ace!! Look!! It’s glowing!!❞ she would state excitedly, manicured digit pointing up ahead, despite the fact he had been aware as it was his choice to bring her here, to begin with. A smile stretching from one rosy cheek to the other, strawberry blonde curls would sway in the wind while she turns from one side to the other, attempting to take in every bit of the masterpiece scene her true love had gifted her with on her special day. 

     In a state of utter daze, her footsteps are slow but still fingers would reach to take his hand in her own, out of habit any time they walked, a sub conscious act to cherish this moment by his side, to look back and remember his touch alongside the captivating image. 

     ❝They’re so beautiful… I’ve never seen anything like them..❞ she finally speaks, but more than the sea fireflies, she could think of one firefly more beautiful than them all and he is the one her bright eyed focus would shift to when the offer of a visit is voiced, staring at his strong back, her voice is gentle and hopeful. 

     ❝You’ll come with me, right? Next time we visit?❞ despite the beauty of the scene surrounding them, her heart can not contain its anxiety when her love puts some distance between them, wondering if this had been all but a blissful dream, and though small feet remain planted in the glowing sand, she would resist an urge to run to him, to claim soft lips right then and there, declaring a love only the surrounding illuminating lights of nature could compete with in brightness.

     However, patience had been a virtue of the hummingbird, and when he calls her name, giving birth to an entire zoo within her stomach, she presses glossed lips together anticipating what was to come, clueless as to what could be more enchanting than what he had already presented her, but never could she have expected the query voiced next. 

     One she needn’t ponder over as it hadn’t even been a choice, but a lifestyle inspiring her every decision, including her accompanying him today — there was nothing she would not give, JUST to do exactly that — to be with him. 

     She wants to argue against all his voiced insecurities, the lack of treasure or things to say; she didn’t need it, none of it; all she needed had been him hence the vigorous shake of her head in defiance, lips pressed firmly together and indigo pleading him not to voice what she’d heard before and feared would be spoken now — how she deserved better when she could swear to the skies and moon alike, the impossibility of it all. 

     But her firefly seemed to have a different idea this time; and as he diminishes the distance between them again, with it all worries and fears seem to wash away as well, replaced with none but adoration for the boy about to speak his promise to her, but only after requesting she close her eyes, and the petite would be damned to turn a request of his. 

     Long lashes fluttering to a close they would kiss flushed cheeks, visibly reddened even in the darkness of the night; the cold feel of metal sliding upon ivory in contrast with the warmth of his touch causing a tender heart to skip a beat but it is the next set of words which completely shatter the hummingbird’s composure, stealing all the breath in her lungs. 

     Emotions her heart could not contain would flood in the form of tears pouring down round features and when even her eyes could not contain them, the wind around them would send a soft breeze through the pair’s hair — a symptom displaying her loss of balance and control under the immense over powering declaration that had been the promise of his eternal love.

     Finally opening her eyes again, it is but through a blurry tear stained vision that she attempts to see the details of the delicacy he had dared wrap around her finger; her other proceeding to futilely attempt and wipe away her tears, yet even through the tears she could not be blinded to its beauty nor perfection. 

     He said he would not make her cry, yet the little song bird could not contain her sobs in this very moment. ❝Ace.. it’s… I —❞ useless attempts at words would be drowned through her broken sobs and finally surrendering to the intensity of her feelings, she would respond by flinging her petite figure at him, arms wrapping close around his stronger build and toes tiptoeing to finally claim that kiss she craved from his lips.
