i know you guys have lots of curiosities about this fic lolll so i’ll try to answer some of the questions i received (∗ᵕ̴᷄◡ᵕ̴᷅∗) 💕 if u still have some, just shoot me an ask!! :] also im really bad at explaining so i apologize 🤦🏻‍♀️ i have the plot nailed in my head but its tricky to articulate it in a clear, linear way for yall considering all the little nuances i added lol. i’ll try my best tho hehe :,)

Okay so there’s a whole ‘nother plot that exists in the background of this fic- which was super fun for me to write, but im sure from a reader standpoint it’s also kinda thrilling to try to connect the dots i left lol. thats why theres so many interpretations for this story (which i love!! i loved reading all yall’s theories)! 💕 BUT. that being said, the ‘canon’ goes like this:

was caleb really dead?

No. Caleb staged his own death and then, similar to the main story homecoming wings, didnt tell mc :,) for his own reasons, for a time, he decides he’ll let her go on believing he’s truly gone…

why did he stage his death?

I dropped little crumbs of it in the fic, but it’s hinted that mc, on top of all her grief, feels a bit bitter over the whole shebang and also blames herself for it. hmm… why would that be? 🤔 well because their final moments together (or so she THOUGHT) were emotionally charged and volatile.

the foundation of their sibling relationship was growing weaker and weaker before the explosion. arguments are forming out of nowhere- things are becoming more tense and mc, for the life of her, can’t understand why her gege is always pulling her into a heated debate about safety, danger, blahblahblah, this that and the third, every time they interact. He’s being wildly unreasonable, which she knows, and protective- a trait that has snowballed as they entered their adulthood- but what she doesn’t know is the why behind it. she tells herself she just has a super protective older brother who views her as a little baby in need of his guidance- which isn’t entirely wrong… but she doesn’t see the full picture. His true feelings. All this tension eventually climbs to its peak. Caleb just gets worse and worse. He needs to do something before the world collapses on them both.

Now, in this au, he works at EVER, a somewhat shady but lucrative company- which dabbles in robotics amongst other things. I imagine they have abundant resources and wealth- and what with his promotions, it’s safe to say caleb is making a LOT. So, the delusional guy he is, he buys a big fancy suite with the idea in mind of two eventually living in it ;) but mc doesn’t want to- she has her own life in linkon!! She wants to spread her wings and separate from the nest anyway. Partly to start her own life; partly to prove to her gege that she can take care of herself. The argument that unfolds over this is the last they have before the big tragic explosion 😭 caleb, putting on a show with his beaten puppy eyes, leaves and then that’s the last time she sees him.

Caleb meticulously plans his ‘death’ out (with some help from his wingman ofc) and then eventually the robot is introduced to mc. It serves as a trojan horse. He’ll finally conquer her heart with it and win full autonomy over her. THIS IS HIS MAIN GOAL WITH THE ROBOT. WHY HE EVEN DOES ANY OF THIS TO BEGIN WITH.

Caleb gets to spy on mc with it and also slowly reshape her to accept his feelings; his ‘death’ has left her in a fragile state of mourning and he knows, after she warms up a bit to not-Caleb, he can more or less get away with anything- bc she will claw for whatever’s left of her family member. He can make her finally reciprocate and understand him— whether that be his feelings or fear or love. He tried to be patient, to be good, but obviously he had to travel a new route. He’s thinking of her 24/7. He’s obsessive, longing, protective, you name it- and all of this just worsens the more she denies him. When push comes to shove… well, caleb will do whatever it takes to win her :] He knows it’s unconventional and he’d be lying if he said it didn’t hurt him too- monitoring his endearingly stubborn, but sweet meimei and the shattered pieces he left of her through his android’s eyes— but it’s all temporary, and he truly believes it’s for the better.

did gideon know?

Yes, Gideon knew all along. He’s Caleb’s best buddy after all. To be matter of fact- Gideon didn’t just know, he quite literally ‘herded’ mc into the lion’s den in a way. Mc knew vaguely of their work at EVER, but not too much; so Gideon was the one who shined that light on their robotics and really introduced her to the concept of not-Caleb. Now, i wouldnt say Gideon is exactly comfortable with his involvement, but he actually really does care for mc and thinks she needs that help- as dubious as the means are. Anyway, it’s almost impossible to shut out all of his buddy’s demands: the brunet is nothing if not insistent on getting what he wants. In his own whacky way, Gideon thinks what he did- playing into Caleb’s plan- was for the better as well. I mean, Mc clearly wasnt doing good before not-Caleb came along,… but with the few visits he managed before the android got a little too stingy and sent him off, Gideon actually managed to catch a smile or two from her! So clearly he did the right thing 👀 not to mention… the real caleb seems very pleased with the progress, too. besides- the whole robot situation is temporary anyway :] She’ll be reuniting with the beloved gege she misses so much sooner rather than later.

how accurate was not-caleb?

His programming is like 100% accurate. Mc, for a mix of both naiveity and delusion, thinks not-Caleb is flawed when he starts to show signs of amorous/romantic feelings for her. Really, though, after she tells him to stay the night with her (innocently; and after years of having not shared the same childhood twin bed), it triggers a part of his ‘brain’ that undoes all real caleb’s self restraint thus far :] If the same exact situation happened with the real caleb, his reaction would’ve more or less been the same. Homeboy can only keep his feelings in check for so long

Because the robot’s creator wanted to add his own special touch to his work if you know what i mean :) yeah he’s a freak like that. Dont think he WOULDNT install in his robot the ability to indirectly knock his ‘meimei’ up. I will say though, that while caleb wants to get mc pregnant, its not fully bc he wants to start a family- at least not right away- but because he wants to emotionally and legally trap her with him. Besides monitoring her/wearing down her walls while she thought he was ‘dead’, this was actually one of caleb’s biggest goals with sending not-caleb into her home.

No. But he essentially created its whole program. And there are cameras inside its eyes in which he watches mc from :) and cant help but snap pics with sometimes: she’s just so pretty— and endlessly sexy when he finally, in a vicarious way, gets to lie her back and make love to her <3

what is real caleb’s motive/ultimate goal?

1. to control/protect/‘tame’ mc through the robot; get her to see things from his point of view (which means realizing she belongs with him- where it’s safe and he can protect & love her)

2. to knock her up (hence the. ahem. reproductive abilities of the robot) so that he can trap her with a baby on top of all the other emotional strings he’s hogtied her with.

and like obviously buffy cannot allow herself to believe that he loves her for many reasons, but she DOES believe it, she can’t make herself unknow it even though she tries so hard. which is partially where the breakdown with tara in 6.13 comes from because the cognitive dissonance of soulless spike loving her as if he has a soul while she is so lost within herself that the only way she can reach for him is to use him (which would be fine if he was the big bad grabbing the slayer for the darkness) which is hurting him! unfathomably! but he’s supposed to be the corruption! how can he??? any of it???

meanwhile spike has watched the woman he loves be brought back as a shell and he wants to see the light in her eyes and he can touch her now and sometimes that’s enough to make her laugh but he can’t linger in those moments or she’ll go away again! so he can play the role he needs to play so she’ll stay, as if he could keep her anywhere she didn’t want to be. as if he wants her to be in the dark instead of bringing him into the light. but how could he ask for anything more when he already got her back and he didn’t even need to kill her afterwards.

and so they hurt each other and he forgets himself and asks her if she even likes him and it’s too honest and he’s asking too much (he asks for nothing) so before she can throw her life away like it’s nothing, he puts the game face on, makes himself a target, and swallows it all. and she can’t unknow. and it would all be fine except he’s a vampire and she’s the slayer and how can he just say it like it’s nothing when she needs to beat his face in just to keep from screaming.

ac3 truly is two completely different games if you do sidequests vs no sidecontent. main game only, he has no friends, his life is pure miseries, and there is no indication of what the fuck he's spending his time between murders doing.

but if you actually do the side content, (mostly talking about homestead missions rn,) you can meet his friends and watch him go "I Am Not The Lord Of The Manor" as he takes on the responsibility of the homesteads accounting, managing trade convoys, commissioning supplies from the varying tradespeople in the area, actively getting people to move into the area, paying for them to get their homes (and business, in the case of the inn), personally protecting his neighbors from robbers, and like, a bunch of other shit.

you can watch him be awkwardly friendly, badly attempt to give advice ("have you considered. talking to your crush"), run around and do things for achilles, and generally have a fulfilling life even amidst the constant tragedies he's dealing with.

all this to say: rose played the game wrong and did literally none of the side content. no homestead, no Boat Time, no "connor accidentally rebuilds the assassins because he likes helping people and they tell him they're going to help him with whatever he's up to".

Argo Tuulik and Dora Klindzic has received legal threats from Longdue (one of the ex-Disco studio announced back in October), specifically one of the investor Riaz Moola, and ZA/UM for working in Summer Eternal.

Argo alleged that he hasn't worked or signed any paper for Longdue. The company said otherwise.

If you want my personal opinion if no contract was signed then Argo should've been free to do whatever he wants after leaving. Longdue's statement didn't specify about Argo's contract either so I believe that is the case. This just seems so petty to me. Riaz Moola is a Forbes 30 under 30 alumni so I don't really have much confidence in his credibility!

Yang Cheng

Starts as a beta, transitions into being an alpha as his trust rank increases

Has a hard time understanding scents due to suffering from prolonged scent deprivation starting at a young age. He basically had no “safe scents” around him at the orphanage, so he never really had the opportunity to learn the nuances of scents. Most smells are kinda just “a lot” to him. His sense of smell dulled naturally as he fully developed into being a beta, and he was able pavlov himself into viewing certain perfumes and incense as “safe smells,” which helped ease some of his anxiety. 

I'm not saying he owns “essence of E-Soul” musk, but-

As a beta, he smelled like petrichor. As an alpha, pine and sage got thrown in there too. His scent tends to have undertones of engine oil when he’s stressed 

Post becoming an alpha, his sense of smell got way stronger and the whole “smells are a lot” thing came back in full force

Bro is still adjusting

Alpha urges are new and he's not sure what's normal or not, so he tries to ignore them all together to avoid overstepping others boundaries. This doesn't really work, and his urges tend to build up and then show all at one. Like, he'll spend weeks pretending that their hero base is just an office space and he's totally cool with anyone entering and then snap, scent mark the whole place, throw his pack inside, and try and attack anyone else who enters. He'll avoid scenting his pack to avoid seeming too possessive and then when they ask him too (read: throw him in the nest and demand he scents them), he does a bit too much and gets them scent drunk. Constantly worried that his pack isn't eating enough and will push give them his food (to which they yell at him for not eating enough)

He's out here agonizing over how he's a “possessive, terrible person” for even considering biting Shang Chao and Xia Qing, and how “it'd be humiliating for them- They're independent omegas and the mark of an alpha (especially one like him) would only weigh them down.” Meanwhile, they both sitting on his lap and presenting their necks.

The territorialism and paranoia issues gets so much worse after the shooting attempt + increased security (meaning more non-pack members in his home). 

He suffers a feral episode after Mr. Rock is exposed. He throws his partners and Pomelo into the nest/ hero base, won't let them leave, and attacks anyone who tries to approach. Xia Qing and Shang Chao take turns distracting him while the other runs to the door to grab whatever groceries they ordered. All the pack members know that Yang Cheng isn't a threat to them, but he's not eating or sleeping and they're worried he's gonna pick a fight with someone and hurt himself. Og E Soul is eventually called in and calms him down

Xia Qing

Omega, but often gets mistaken for a beta because of her weaker scent and her general lack of obvious omega instincts (has a kinda bare bones nest, physical contact is kinda just whatever to her when it comes to most people, understands others scents but is fully capable of just ignoring them, alpha commands don’t really do anything to her)

Her softer scent makes it a bit harder for others to pick up on her emotions, but it's also really good for soothing others anxiety (since it's not overwhelming) 

Stressed enough from the combo of college, raising her brother, and trying to stop Yang Cheng from doing something stupid that she didn’t exactly have to take strong suppressants for her heats to stop

Smells like lavender, peppermint, and sage

While she doesn’t exactly make an effort to hide the fact that she’s an omega, it's not something she actively advertises. She doesn’t exactly fit the “omegas are submissive and agreeable” stereotype, so it's easier for her if people just don’t know she is one (helps her avoid both getting shit for “not being a proper omega” and attention from people who’d use scent intimidation to pressure her into being a proper omega). Honestly, if the trust system transitioned her into being a beta, she wouldn’t even be bothered

Her only potentially obvious omega traits are her mom friend instincts and tendency to throw people she’s close to into her nest (and if it weren’t for her scent being in the nest, even that could get mistaken for alpha territorialism) 

Shang Chao 

Omega with a high enough standing that people want him just for the status symbol. His family, unique effects of his scent, and generally agreeable personality make people see him as an almost perfect omega (the fact that he’s a male omega and therefore, infertile, is a drawback for some and a plus for others)

Smells like pine, peppermint, and honeysuckle 

His scent has a strong and immediate calming effect, and it makes most alphas around him kinda just instinctively want to please him. It’s great for doing business but it makes forming genuine friendships a little difficult. He’s on pleasant terms with most people, but he generally doesn’t know if that's because they genuinely like him or if its just cuz of hormones and status

The downside is that he can’t take any suppressants or it’ll lose it’s full affect

Appreciates Yang Cheng and Xia Qing’s lack of understanding and/or sensitivity to smell since it means he knows they like him for who he is

Because of all the scent marking, he kinda just assumed he, Yang Cheng, and Xia Qing were all dating. Straight up didn’t realize they never actually had a discussion about it until Xia Qing reminds him during Yang Cheng’s post shooting feral episode. 

Speaking of the shooting- he lives in this au cuz he didn't recognize the smell on the other side of the door and kept it closed

He tries to email Yang Cheng just to set up a time to talk things over, but instead of reaching him, Xia Qing responds and asks him to help Yang Cheng get out of his feral episode

He may have basically had to hold Yang Cheng (who was too tired to really put up a good fight) down while Xia Qing and Shang Chao scented Yang Cheng till his brain was back

He also may have had to babysit Pomelo for a couple days while Xia Qing and Shang Chao finished calming Yang Cheng down

Becomes an unofficial pack member and mentor figure. He’s aware of the later part, but not the former part, and he is both confused and delighted that he keeps getting invited to family dinners. 

He and Yang Cheng aren’t a hero team, but they work together sometimes and Yang Cheng will kinda default to E-Soul’s command when they do. The Batman to Yang Cheng’s Nightwing if you will (idk, I don’t read DC comics).

Uncle Rock

Alpha, but disguises himself a beta

Gets exposed in this au but he's rich so he gets away with it. A lot of heroes leave his company afterwards

What does Jazaiti social structure look like, irt mothers? Or like, what role do they play

Some things to be clear on beforehand:

Child: a young Jazait is considered functionally genderless and occupies this age-gender group until puberty. A child is classified as a man when testes descend (though occupies a secondary ‘young man’ space until full completion of puberty). A child becomes a woman at completion of baseline female puberty (having a fully developed mane and having undergone a growth spurt). Man: gender assignment for adult individuals with a penis and testes. They will be wed to mothers. Woman: gender assignment for adult individuals with vaginas who do NOT have active estrus cycles. Most will remain women throughout their lives and be unwed, some will become mothers. Mother: gender assignment for individuals with vaginas who DO have active estrus cycles (considered a mother regardless of if they have actually had children or not). A woman can become a mother and all mothers were once women, but these are distinct and separate gender roles. Elder mother: not a specific gender role- a post-fertile mother who no longer has an active estrus cycle. Clanmother: not a specific gender role- the current eldest mother in any given clan, who acts as its leader.

In typical elowey development, sexually mature males + nonreproductive females are minimally dimorphic, and sexual traits apart from genitalia are usually indistinct. Average size and build is approximately the same, females tend to have larger cuspids. The most strongly dimorphic feature is in scent, with most adult males and females having distinct smells.

Reproductive females on the other hand are more strongly dimorphic- there is typically an additional growth spurt and gain of body fat/muscle, voices deepen, manes grow longer and thicker, nipples grow longer and some breast tissue is accumulated (though not as much as humans, elowey only have fully developed breasts during lactation). Their scent is also distinct from males and nonreproductive females.

All elowey undergo puberty that results in an individual becoming sexually mature and physiologically capable of reproduction, but the estrus/ovulation cycles of females are hormonally suppressed by proximity of a reproductive female. A female’s estrus cycle will initiate on its own with time in the absence of a reproductive female, and will be directly initiated through sexual activity. Non-reproductive females will typically have a sex drive equivalent to a reproductive female when not in estrus- sex may be desirable in being physically pleasurable or as an act of affection, but baseline libido levels are low. Hormonal suppression cannot completely preclude the initiation of estrus (though will typically cause it to be irregular) and would be supplemented by behavioral suppression (the socially dominant reproductive female preventing others from mating) in pre-behaviorally modern ancestors. Instinct towards behavioral suppression often translates into social control of female sexual activity in elowey cultures, but this is not universal.

Jazait culture is mother-matriarchal, in which mothers are socially and politically dominant to men and women. All women have the potential to become mothers, but most never will, and only inherit the dominant social status upon this occurring. Being a mother is reckoned as a blessed, elevated state and one that is purely natural to occupy positions of strength and leadership, with related men and women being better suited for supporting roles and exacting her will.

Mothers have greater religious status in society and are deemed to be beings made in the sun-mother's image, who is the creator god in Jazaiti religious belief (accompanied by one other (non-creator) god, the moon-father(s), understood as one and three beings and her husband(s)). Their fertility is reckoned as being a gift from the sun-mother. This blessing extends beyond procreation and allows for mothers to work through the sun-mother to encourage needed growth and new life (in fish stocks, livestock, agriculture and forage, singing down the rains, etc). Jazaiti religion (and culture itself) is heavily decentralized, and a clanmother will be the spiritual leader of any given family group and will impart accumulated religious knowledge of generations onto her descendants.

The use of scent glands has strong applications in Jazait culture, particularly in the case of a clanmother. A clanmother will undergo a yearly ceremony in which she journeys around the limits of her clan's land and applies wrist gland secretions along the way, enforcing a protective ring that dissuades the entrance of evil spirits and forms a metaphysical boundary, a sense of 'here' and 'there'. She will also mark the faces of newborn children as means of fully initiating and accepting them into the clan. In any case where a person, place, or thing needs spiritual enforcement as belonging to a clan, this task falls to the clanmother. Any mother's scent is regarded as having properties of blessing, particularly in association with fertility.

A mother's status will generally be passed onto her eldest daughter upon completing rites of initiation, who will be wed and move out of her mothers household (thus eliminating hormonal suppression and allowing for sexual contact to more rapidly initiate estrus). The clanmother has the ultimate say in whether other daughters can become mothers, and will make this decision on a variety of factors- reading the will of the sun-mother, their own opinion on the daughter's suitability for the role, political strategy and necessity (or lack thereof) for additional marriages with another clan, and material concerns of territory and sustenance (a clan can only sustain so many families, with only the wealthiest and most powerful clans having many mothers therein).

This society has a clan system wherein the eldest mother (usually past reproductive age) has the primary and final say in the affairs of her clan. Her husbands will be considered clanfathers and have an elevated rank among other men in the clan. Clans follow a rank hierarchy of clanmother > mothers > clanfathers > husbands > women and unwed men > children.

The number of men is highly disproportionate to the number of mothers, and as such most marriages are polyandrous. One’s number of husbands is usually directly proportionate to one’s wealth, both in indicating access to resources to sustain a large family, and in practical measure, as a dowry is paid to the mother of each male spouse. Husbands will be absorbed into their wife’s clan (though this establishes ties and responsibilities with his former clan), and kinship is matrilineal and makes no distinction between children of different husbands.

A child’s biological father will often be circumstantially known, but this direct relation is not of great importance as each husband is considered a father to all associated children. Due to potential ambiguity in fatherhood and purely matrilineal descent, extramaritial affairs are not of substantial consequence and resulting children will not be considered bastards, but this this is generally frowned upon as lowly and undignified behavior.

Clans are typically very large and spread widely with clan-affiliated families occupying vast territories. Different mothers in the same clan do not directly interact on a regular basis and typically only assemble for festivities and rites, or to discuss matters of utmost importance in person. They will instead use their husbands as messengers (often one husband ends up specifically designated as a messenger, which is a loosely esteemed status as this will often indicate the greatest trust and affection).

The Jazait have no specified warrior culture (this doesn’t mean conflict is nonexistant, just that there is no strongly developed traditions surrounding it). Most women and men will have learned basic self defense and will know how to handle a spear or knife, and will fill roles of warriors in times of conflict. Mothers tend to be protected from directly engaging in combat, and will act as commanders and mediators in all but the most dire of circumstances. Mothers entering combat is a common narrative motif in Jazait storytelling and folklore, used to demonstrate the profound gravity of a conflict.

All members of a family/clan participate in childcare, with married men and mothers being the primary childrearers and the most involved in the domestic sphere and near the home (producing textiles, cooking, farm labor, etc). Women perform the majority of non-domestic labor (in traditional subsistence, this will be fishing, leviathan hunting, foraging, and some herding). This is not itself a gendered role and is partially just pragmatism- most women will go their entire lives without becoming mothers (and will thus be unmarried), while most men will be married, so there’s a greater proportion of women available for tasks away from the home.

The sexual behavior of men and especially women is strongly controlled.
