Racism in America obviously isn't going anywhere, and even backed by magic Tic's family will still remain under threat. Given how closely Misha Green has woven together history with fiction, it seems like magic will still work around and move through defining events in the history of America in the 20th century. Martin Luther King Jr. has already been name-dropped in an early episode of Lovecraft Country, and the series' 1955 setting rests on the cusp of the Civil Rights Movement. While the American education system often depicts the Civil Rights Movement as a unified front, that wasn't the case. Martin Luther King Jr. was a figurehead, but did not speak for all Black people. Lovecraft Country's first season resides just before the emergence of the Black Panther Party, of Malcolm X's rise and the idea of Black supremacy. It's worth considering how black magic, or make that "Black magic," could shift things and affect certain ideas held about the power of men and women, and which parts of America are worth saving. The leading man is dead, and with his death is perhaps the death of the romantic, noble hero as defined by Joseph Campbell. In his stead are four women, Leti, Hippolyta, Dee, and Ji-Ah, and a man, Montrose, struggling with his own masculinity, sexuality, and anger. Whether they work together or not, they now each have the capability to shift the balance of power in America on the eve of the Civil Rights Movement, giving an expanded and literal meaning to the title Lovecraft Country. -Hollywood Reporter To see/hear more, visit: www.somenobodies.com - To support the show(s), visit: www.patreon.com/somenobodies - #lovecraft #lovecraftcountry #atticus #somenobodies #podcasts #reviews #jonathanmajors #hbomax #hbo #newshow #atticusfreeman #wow #supreme #today #jurneesmollett #daily #review #instagood #instadaily #new #hippolyta #orrery #timemachine #raceriot #jurneesmollettbell (at Boulder County, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGkYLE-pKUn/?igshid=1lcxndzimpn17

Join Misha Green (showrunner, executive producer, director and writer) and Jurnee Smollett (“Letitia ‘Leti’ Lewis”) of HBO’s hit Lovecraft Country, for a conversation about the show’s unique blend of social critique and the supernatural with co-host and executive producer of The Nod Brittany Luse. Based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, the series follows Atticus Freeman as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia and his uncle George on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose. Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.
Smollett and Green give their insight into the genre-bending show; the creative challenges of making a paranormal horror story in the midst of real-world crises; stories from behind the scenes; and much more.

Misha Green is taking responsibility for what she believes is one of the biggest failures of “Lovecraft Country” so far: the storyline of the Indigenous Two-Spirit character Yahima (Monique Candalaria). The “Lovecraft Country” showrunner took to social media this week after the airing of the first season’s penultimate episode to admit she failed the character by killing them off shortly after introducing them. “I wanted to show the uncomfortable truth that oppressed folks can also be oppressors,” Green wrote in response to a fan asking her about the portrayal of Yahima. “But I didn’t examine or unpack the moment/portrayal of Yahima as thoroughly as I should have. It’s a story point worth making, but I failed in the way I chose to make it.” Yahima debuted in the series’ fourth episode, “A History of Violence.” The character is an Arawak Two-Spirit that Tic (Jonathan Majors), Leti (Jurnee Smollett), and Montrose (Michael K. Williams) free from imprisonment during their adventure inside the Braithwhite tomb. Yahima tells the group she helped Titus Braithwhite translate symbols in the Book of Names before he murdered their family and imprisoned her. Tic and the gang rescue Yahima from the tomb and bring her back to Chicago, but Montrose murders Yahima to prevent them from revealing more information about the Book of Names. The character is introduced and killed all within the series’ fourth episode. Written by white female abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe and published in 1852, Uncle Tom’s Cabin tells the story of Uncle Tom, a noble and dignified Christian slave. On a riverboat to New Orleans to be sold by auction, Tom rescues angelic little white girl, Little Eva, when she falls overboard. Grateful, her father Augustine St. Clare purchases Tom, and he and Eva become great friends. On Eva’s deathbed, she asks her father to free all his slaves, which he plans to do, but dies in a freak accident before he can. Tom is sold to brutal Sam Legree, and is eventually whipped to death after refusing to divulge the whereabouts of two female runaways. Uncle Tom’s Cabin sought to garner sympathy for slaves and support for abolition, by expressing the depravity of slavery, which it did successfully. Topsy is only a minor character, but her cultural impact is clear. She is described in the book as “eight or nine years old, and, besides being very black, had round shining eyes, glittering as glass beads, and wooly hair braided into little tails, which stuck out in every direction.” She was dressed in rags, and spoke in broken English, and is described as an “imp of darkness.” Ironically, her mischievousness, and the fact that she’s a thief was meant to reflect intellectual capability. However the Topsy caricature was subsequently made popular through minstrel shows and films, which depicted her as humorous instead of sympathetic. That pervasive negative image of Black kids as simple and unkempt still persists, from the serialized and bastardized Sambo, to the Little Rascal Buckwheat.  To see/hear more, visit:  www.somenobodies.com To support the show(s), visit: www.patreon.com/somenobodies - #lovecraft #lovecraftcountry #atticus #somenobodies #podcast #reviews #jonathanmajors #hbomax #hbo #newshow #atticusfreeman #wow #supreme #today #jurneesmollett #daily #review #instagood #instadaily #new #bopsyand topsy #dee #lovecraftcountry #uncletom #racism (at Boulder County, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGFaIatpgph/?igshid=1drim90hiodqe

“Jig-A-Bobo”—creator Misha Green’s directorial debut—finally gives Jada Harris’ Diana Freeman a chance to step into Lovecraft Country’s spotlight, the show does a surprisingly effective job of illustrating the parallels between its riffs on horror tropes and the sorts of real-world atrocities that so often terrorize Black Americans on a regular basis. Concerned as all of Lovecraft Country’s heroes are for Hippolyta, who disappeared without a trace and was spirited away to another planet, this week’s episode opens with the in-universe death of Emmett Till, a tragedy that rocks Chicago’s entire Southside, as the Black residents know that they live in a world that doesn’t truly want to see justice when racist white bigots kill Black people in cold blood. Lovecraft Country wastes no time going straight for the emotional gut punch this week. “Jig-a-Bobo” begins with a memorial for Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Black boy who was kidnapped, beaten, shot, tied by the throat to a cotton gin fan with barbed wire, and thrown in a river in the summer of 1955. The murder of Till became one of the rallying cries for the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. While it might seem like a bit of a departure that “Jig-a-Bobo” starts with a real historical event, it’s actually something that Lovecraft Country has been quietly setting up in the background since its third episode, which featured a cameo by Till (played by Rhyan Hill). In that episode, Till is playing with a  Ouija board with Atticus’ cousin Diana (“Dee,” played by Jada Harris) and a group of their friends. When he asks it if he’ll have a good time on his trip — referencing the real-life trip Emmett Till took to Mississippi, where he was killed for allegedly flirting with a white woman — the board quickly gave a resounding “NO.” The name used for Till in that scene was Bobo, an actual nickname Till went by, and one piece of the multi-layered title for this episode. All that from just the opening scene. There’s always a lot to unpack with Lovecraft Country, and this episode had more than most. The latest episode of Lovecraft Country, “I Am," gave fans an explosion of Afrofuturism, women's empowerment and excitement. Fans especially responded to the interdimensional being Beyond C'est, who gave fans nods to cultural icons, popular characters and even Queen Bey herself. Shannon Houston, writer for the series, tweeted that Beyond C'est's dress referenced Brazilian star Elza Soares, also known as the Queen of Samba. Lovecraft Country Theory: Montrose Killed George In Episode 2 Lovecraft Country's episode 2 saw the death of George Freeman. While it may have been the Sons Of Adam who shot him, did Montrose allow him to die? In Lovecraft Country season 1, episode 2, "Whitey's On The Moon", George Freeman passed away after getting shot by Samuel Braithwhite, but it may be possible that Montrose—his brother—was ultimately responsible for his death. Throughout the series, Atticus "Tic" Freeman's father, Montrose, has proven to be a suspicious character with an ulterior motive. While it has yet to be revealed, episodes that succeeded "Whitey's On The Moon" have suggested that he may be trying to keep a secret hidden or protect Tic with an underlying villainous motive. Smollett has long been a fan of thrillers, fantasies, and sci-fi. “I think there’s so much power in fear,” she says. “We see how it can be weaponized, right?” But as a Black actress, she felt excluded from them. “As an artist, it was quite frustrating to feel that I couldn’t participate in these genres, because, in loving them so much, you often, as a Black artist, feel shut out from them—unless you want to be the collateral damage, killed off early or not really giving substance to the plot, just dismissed in a way that is not very satisfying as an artist.” Now, “disruptive” works like Jordan Peele’s films (he’s also an executive producer on Lovecraft), Nia DaCosta’s Candyman, and Regina King’s performance in Watchmen give Smollett hope. It is not lost on viewers that Lovecraft Country, which juxtaposes forest monsters with white supremacist wizards and magic potions with racist cops, is painfully timely as the country continues to protest police killings and violence, and demand justice for crimes that seem impossible to question. “This is, essentially, protest art,” Smollett says of the series. “But more than that, we’re just telling the truth.” -Bazaar To see/hear more, visit:  www.somenobodies.com - To support the show(s), visit: www.patreon.com/somenobodies - #lovecraft #lovecraftcountry #atticus #somenobodies #podcast #reviews #jonathanmajors #hbomax #hbo #newshow #atticusfreeman #wow #supreme #today #jurneesmollett #daily #review #instagood #instadaily #new #leti (at Boulder County, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFzVT4rJ6oa/?igshid=3ys7v2n6v2xf

“I Am.” is what happens when women are given the space to explore every facet of their being, and are allowed to embody even the ugliest parts of themselves. It is another in a succession of strong episodes that center women, and allow for their self-discovery and actualization. The last time we see Hippolyta, she and Diana detour from Boston to Ardham. What she finds there are the collapsed ruins of Ardham Lodge and evidence that George had been there, confirming her suspicions that she wasn’t told everything about his death. When she gets back home—safe, thankfully— she figures out the puzzle of the orrery, and finds a key and coordinates inside. In Lovecraft Country, everybody has an interesting introduction to magic. Last week, we learned that Tic’s first brush with monsters was not the shoggoths, but his former lover Ji-ah. This week, Hippolyta follows the orrery’s clues to Hiram’s observatory and the magic within. -den of geek uk To see/hear more, visit: www.somenobodies.com - To support the show(s), visit: www.patreon.com/somenobodies - #lovecraft #lovecraftcountry #atticus #somenobodies #podcast #reviews #jonathanmajors #hbomax #hbo #newshow #atticusfreeman #wow #supreme #today #jurneesmollett #daily #review #instagood #instadaily #new #hippolyta #orrery #timemachine #time #iam (at Boulder County, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFrjDdGpLWe/?igshid=3psowy3hiak3

Majors grew up in Dallas with a pastor mother and two siblings, a brother and sister. His father abandoned them as kids. Unlike most actors, Majors got into Hollywood accidentally. As a teenager, he was involved in a lot of crime and was even arrested for shoplifting. However, he was able to find a haven in the local theatre and soon got drawn into the institution. He eventually went to the University of North Carolina to study theatre and then bagged his MFA from Yale’s School of Drama. While at Yale, he got his first acting gig in 2017. playing the younger version of his “Lovecraft Country” star, Micheal K. Williams in the ABC limited series, “When We Rise.” Two years later, Majors got his breakout role in the independent film, “The Last Black Man,” playing the part of a young Black man who helps his friend try to reclaim his childhood home. For his stellar performance, he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and a Black Reel Awards, putting him in the radar of top directors in the industry. In Korean mythology, a kumiho is a fox with nine tails that becomes this way after living for thousands of years. Just like Ji-Ah, it has the power to transform from its true appearance to that of a beautiful woman in order to seduce men. They commonly take the heart of their victims. When Ji-Ah has sex with one of her victims, her nine tails appear and rip the person apart while taking their memories, which may be a direct reference to a person's soul. The kumiho has a deeper history in Chinese and Japanese folklore that is far more brutal and horrific than the Korean mythology. In these stories, they are an omen and deliverer of death depending on the mythology's region. Regardless, they always are linked to death in some crucial way. The traditional Korean mythology would suggest Ji-Ah was never human. She was always a fox that then transformed into a kumiho over thousands of years, and is now destined to seduce men for their hearts and souls. Except, the end of the episode and the inclusion of the mudang reveals an entirely new element. According to Korean history, a mudang is a female shaman who has the power to summon powerful creatures, such as a kumiho. Ji-Ah's mother, who the kumiho takes the appearance of, asks the mudang to assist her in getting revenge against the men who brutally assaulted her actual daughter. Therefore, the kumiho was summoned by the mudang to utilize the beauty of Ji-Ah to take the souls of of 99 evil men to avenge the real Ji-Ah and bring her back to her mother. It completely alters the mythology by transforming the creature into a curse placed on Ji-Ah. Lovecraft Country's story of the Nine-Tailed Fox is thematically similar to Naruto in a lot of ways. The episode sees Ji-Ah find a reason to keep the beast at bay (her love of Atticus), but struggles intensely to do so. While she hasn't yet jumped into battle or used any kind of jutsu, Lovecraft Country's opening sequence has hinted that Ji-Ah could indeed play a pivotal role in some big Apocalyptic event that's about to unfold in the series. Just like Naruto, Ji-Ah may need her Nine-Tails power to help save everyone. As it turns out, Ji-Ah was actually the corpse of a girl that had been horribly abused by her adopted father. The mother, enraged, used a shaman to fill the dead girl's form with the spirit of a "Kumiho," which is Korea's version of the Nine-Tailed Fox. The Kumiho has but one mission: seduce and consume the souls of 100 men, in order to become human. How she does this is pretty gruesome: while in the throes of passion with a man, the Kumiho has nine tails protrude from its body (including from the rear end, mouth, and both eyes!) which it uses to penetrate the male victim in equally gruesome places. The Nine-Tails allow the Kumiho to see everything in the man's soul and then consume it. The remaining boody is then torn to shreds by the nine tails, leaving behind the kind of mess that needs to be mopped up. -comicbook.com To see/hear more, visit: www.somenobodies.com - To support the show(s), visit: www.patreon.com/somenobodies - #lovecraft #lovecraftcountry #atticus #somenobodies #podcast #reviews #jonathanmajors #hbomax #hbo #newshow #atticusfreeman #wow #supreme #today #jurneesmollett #daily #review #instagood #instadaily #new #jamiechung #naruto #ninetails #jiah We just dropped our latest episode!
