WIG REVIEW: KING RICHARD
Tumblr media
Oh good LORDT this movie. If you like TENNIS, overbearing parents, WILLSMITH!!!!!!!!, the 90s, SPORTS!, 90s SPORTS, 90s TENNIS SPORTS!!!!!!!!1, the plot of Cinderella screamed at you, snobby white people in shorts, bad dude wigs, and NANCY FRIGGIN REAGAN then this movie is definitely for you! Read on for many spoilers unless you don’t know of the existence of Venus and Serena Williams and THEIR DAD RICHARD WILLIAMA AKA THE ONLY WILLIAMS THAT MATTERS! Oh, also wigs. Let’s discuss.
Tumblr media
Did you know that Will Smith doesn’t have an Oscar? Well he doesn’t but he clearly wants one and thus: why this movie is here! GET WILL THAT OSCAR NOW!! MAYBE! Let it be known that I don’t care about tennis, any sports of any kind, or most biopics so this movie is 0% for me. I watched it for the wigs (duh) and because it’s free on HBOMax til December 19. If you want to watch this movie, please watch it for $0. But also if you value your time or mental sanity, please don’t watch this movie. The running time is somewhere between 2.5 hours and an entire lifetime.
Tumblr media
So this movie is about Venus and Serena Williams but rather than making a straight up biopic of them, it focuses on their Rasputin-like father, Richard, who I guess is just as known as them if sports are your thing? Anyway, the film begins sometime in the 90s in Compton, where struggling Richard is taking his tennis phenom kids (as well as 3 other daughters WHO DON’T COUNT BECAUSE THEY CAN’T DO TENNIS) to the courts where he tries to get rich assholes to back his kids (THEY DON’T BECAUSE WHITE TENNIS SNOBS SUCK!) Meanwhile, the girls train at a dodgy Compton court where Richard also has to confront local gangs who sexually harass his daughters. Choosing to focus on Richard and not the girls is a CHOICE and as a theater nerd all I can compare it to is the musical “Gypsy” which focuses on Mama Rose, not her burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee. Essentially, this is a bizarro Gypsy about tennis ?! I dunno guys.
This movie is equal parts only for people who love Venus and Serena... and only for people...who know nothing about them? The film seems to constantly question: are these two crazy kids gonna make it (???????????) as if they’re not both some of the greatest living athletes ever. Even I know who they are and the closest I’ve come to playing tennis is watching that one scene from “Clueless” more than 100 times.
Tumblr media
Will Smith leans HEAVILY into southern drawl and greying temples and GETTING THAT OSCAR, BEBE! Richard pushes his kids hard. He spews life lessons like a Hallmark card on speed, makes them watch “Cinderella” and when they don’t get message that he wants it to convey, makes them watch it again, he trains them endlessly on tennis courts IN THE FUCKING RAIN. When nosy neighbors fear for the safety of these girls (SAME, NEIGHBORS!) he shades child protective services for being racist and makes his kids spell “CIVILIZATION” in front of them. Richard has a dream, a life plan for his kids, a preordained GOAL that the entire family MUST. LIVE. UP. TO. It reminded me of the dad of the Shaggs, except these girls are extremely talented. Also we are meant to believe that Richard is singularly driving this bus (sometimes literally - they get around in a VW bus) and that he is not completely deranged.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, his ultra supportive wife, Brandy, played by the goddess  Aunjanue Ellis, does everything to keep the household afloat, deferring to Richard on all things tennis while supporting them financially and defending the kids against Richard’s complete insanity (HE TRIES TO MAKE THE GIRLS WALK 3 MILES HOME AFTER WINNING AT TENNIS YOU GUYS!) Brandy’s wig, much like her entire vibe, is very relaxed yet bouncy. I should point out that the hair and wigs on all the girls are great throughout.
Tumblr media
BUT THEN THE WHITE DUDES. UGH. So Richard finally scores a fancy ass tennis coach for the girls in the form of a very greying Tony Goldwyn. Despite wanting this coach VERY BADLY, Richard still micromanages him, coaches the girls himself, and drives this dude to insanity (NOT UNLIKE THE VIEWING AUDIENCE).
Tumblr media
ENTER: THAT DUDE FROM THE WALKING DEAD (yes, that’s his name!) In a wig so horribly feathered I can only believe it was left over from "Wonder Woman: 1984″ and a questionable Midwestern accent definitely left over from FX’s “Fargo”, Walking Dead dude is READY TO COACH THESE GIRLS AT TENNISSSSSSSSSS!!!! I am ready to throw this wig into the garbage because the texture is trash and much like all bad dude wigs, it juts out at the back. NO.
Tumblr media
Richard definitely gaslights him into believing that he will allow him to coach (LOLOL KING RICHARD IS ALWAYS COACH, WALKING DEAD DUDE!) even when the entire family moves to FLORIDA as soundtracked by Kenny effing Rogers and then Richard refuses to let the girls do whatever tennis thing Walking Dead wanted him to do (I STILL DON’T CARE ABOUT TENNIS). I do very much care about this AWFUL WIG. ABSOLUTELY NOT, WIG.
Tumblr media
At some point, Walking Dead dude decides to part this wig on the side LIKE THAT IS GONNA MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE!!! I CAN STILL SEE YOU WIG, AND YOU STINK MORE THAN THE FACT THAT RICHARD REFUSES TO TAKE MULTIMILLION DOLLAR DEALS FOR HIS TENNIS DAUGHTERS!
Tumblr media
Walking Dead Dude is not the only one to get a wig glowup. Brandy also gets this new wig which is honestly pretty great, as is Aunjanue in this scene in which she has HAD IT with Richard (plz get HER an Oscar, not Will!) Golden highlights suit you, girl. Now get that Oscar gold!
Tumblr media
In the final moments (hours?) of this movie, the hairdressers apparently painstakingly recreated the Williams’ sisters braids in the form of wigs that Venus and Serena approved themselves. I won’t spoil the rest of the movie for you in case you are wondering if these girls ever became tennis superstars and Richard became famous enough to have an entire movie made about him.
I honestly cannot argue with the accuracy and quality of these wigs, especially given the fact that they also are forced to play tennis for seemingly eternities. THESE WIGS DO NOT LOOK LIKE WIGS AND LOOK VERY GOOD which is the highest wig compliment one can get. I almost decided to say that this whole movie WURQED because of them!
BUT.
Tumblr media
Earlier in the movie, the younger girls are visited by the ghost (?) of Nancy Reagan in what can only be described as an Orphan Annie wig. My daughter was Annie for Halloween in a wig far superior to this one. The quality, texture, seams...EVERYTHING about this wig are 1000% WRONG. I had a lot of thoughts and faces about this wig (the Williams’ sisters reactions are my ID actually). Are we supposed to believe that Nancy herself is wearing a wig? Does she know that by wearing red she is actually becoming Annie? Did she seriously say “JUST SAY NO” wherever she went? Regardless, I have to say NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to this wig and this movie and this movie’s wigs solely based on this one awful wig.
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ

#OscarNoms #AwardsRace #AwardsSeason #RoadtoOscar #Awards #Movies https://www.instagram.com/p/CaW5clugDuM/?utm_medium=tumblr

We caught up with three marvelous #films over #Thanksgiving. As I have the unfortunate habit of forcing patterns that may or may not actually exist on random collections, it was clear, at least to me, that #KingRichard, #Belfast, and #HouseOfGucci – taken together – explore, dissect, and celebrate the power of family – the good, the bad, the ugly, the essential, and everything in between. Read more here (link in bio): https://reelroyreviews.com/2021/11/29/these-are-your-ghosts-not-mine-king-richard-belfast-and-house-of-gucci/ The world has been so upside down for so long that it’s hard to reconcile what “normal” even is anymore … if there ever was a “normal” in the first place. For my family, Thanksgiving wasn’t really much about turkey (#vegetarianism tends to hamper the typical American holiday diet) or large gatherings (if you met my extended clan you’d understand). Rather, we typically cloister away in the dark comfort of the cineplex – sometimes taking in as many as three movies in a row, much to the chagrin of my father’s aching back and wallet. Tickets are expensive enough, but you’ve never seen us hit that concession stand! @houseofguccimovie @belfastmovie @kingrichardfilm @ladygaga @jamiedornan @ridleyscottcg @willsmith @jaredleto @venuswilliams @serenawilliams @caitrionabalfe #ladygaga #jamiedornan #caitrionabalfe #willsmith #aunjanueellis #venuswilliams #serenawilliams #alpacino #jaredleto #adamdriver #judidench #ciaranhinds #gucci #tennis #ireland (at Saline, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CW4fO9fjYQD/?utm_medium=tumblr

"My mom used to say- The strongest, the most powerful, the most dangerous creature on this whole Earth is a woman who knows how to think. ain’t nothing she can’t do." – Richard Williams I saw this film twice, in theaters & on HBO Max, today and it was one of the best performances Will Smith has ever done. The film kept me on the edge of my seat and the message was very powerful to all female of color. This is a film all black women must see and acknowledge. Kudos to the cast for their brilliant, heartfelt performance. Will Smith is overdue for an Oscar and this film will hopefully land him one. #kingrichard #willsmith #aunjanueellis #venusandserena https://www.instagram.com/p/CWzbbcVg5xu/?utm_medium=tumblr

Review : King Richard (2021)
Tumblr media
As a young Black child of the 1980s, I remember the Williams family tennis experiment very well.  My father had already made me aware of the work that Earl Woods was doing with his already famous (and soon to be infamous) son Tiger, so it was extremely interesting to see a similar story taking place in Compton with Richard Williams and his daughter Venus.  It didn’t take a genius to see that Venus had championship pedigree, but even the most seasoned of tennis fans was caught off guard by Serena’s meteoric rise and dominance of the sport.  No matter how many glass ceilings the Williams sisters broke, and in spite of the numerous adversities they faced on all levels, they made sure to be humble and honest.  It is this spirit that carries the rags to riches story of King Richard into the upper echelon of 2021 film.
youtube
A biopic is only as good as the pedigree of how real life events are dramatized and presented, and with that in mind, the most significant praise must go to the brilliant performances of all cast involved in King Richard.  The Williams family is brought to life chiefly by the chemistry between Will Smith and Aunjanue Ellis... Smith’s portrayal of Richard Williams is full of pride misunderstood as stubbornness, not to mention a healthy dose of belief-infused self-righteousness, and all of this balanced out by the unconditional love and deep devotion Ellis builds her portrayal of Oracene "Brandy" Price off of.  The tall task of portraying the Williams sisters falls on the shoulders of Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton (portraying Venus and Serena, respectively), and Sidney captures the tender but competitive spirit of Venus Williams perfectly, while Singleton can be seen harnessing the no-nonsense competitive drive and independent fierceness that Serena Williams came to make the cornerstone of her identity.  Tony Goldwyn brings the cocky over-confidence of the old guard to the table, while Jon Bernthal goes polar opposite against type to portray the over-exuberance and frustration that come part in parcel with faith in a sure thing waiting to crystalize.  Mikayla LaShae Bartholomew, Danielle Lawson and Layla Crawford round out the Williams/Price family with their humor and support-filled family moments.  Supporting performances from Vaughn Hebron, Andy Bean and Craig Tate also stand out, while Kevin Dunn, Jessica Wacnick, Chase Del Rey, Marcela Zacarias and Christopher Waller all step in to portray various tennis icons.
The heart of this film is found in the purity of a true bootstraps, rags to riches story focused through the lens of the Black experience that is still able to be wholly relatable to any and everyone who has ever found themselves fueled by a dream and determined to make it reality.  There is an overabundance of love to be found amongst the connective threads within the film, but the story never panders to the audience by painting the picture as a perfect one, often times staring the strife and frustration that comes with sticking to your guns right in the face.  While the Williams sisters did manage to escape many of the trappings that come with growing up in Compton, it would have been disingenuous to paint their ascension as struggle-free, so the dramatic tension that is found between Richard and Brandy, Richard and Venus and Serena and Venus, though all centered in love, are palatable because they come from places that we as an audience can understand in some context, as all of us have watched decisions be made for us or have had to stand in someone else’s shadow knowing our potential for greatness.  Add to this the fact that Richard Williams is trying to sale a dual dream to people who had, up to that point, shaped the inner and outer framework of tennis on the amateur and professional levels in all aspects, and the Sisyphean nature of his task immediately breeds grounds for obstacle after obstacle, not to mention clashes of ideals and talk of changing out the old guard.
Speaking of the old guard, King Richard does a bold job of facing the embedded race issues head on without (for lack of a better term) weighing down the story under the gravity of that topic.  Venus and Serena Williams have always found themselves the center of race-based debates in the sporting realm, be it for their style of play on the court or the literal styles they adorn on and off the court, so it makes sense that King Richard would give us the path the led to their willingness to shoulder that burden via the ways that Richard Williams doesn’t sell himself, his ideals or his daughters short at any point in the path.  When Venus begins demolishing the Junior Circuit and the rest of the family finds themselves getting wound up in the celebration, it is Richard who is willing to fall on the sword and give the bittersweet reminder that they must excel with humility, as their mere presence already upsets the balance to a point that many are not willing to handle with grace.  It is Richard who reminds them that not everyone will celebrate their success, and that most of the people who will be jealous of them and try to hold them back will look just like them, and it is Richard who reminds them that they must be themselves when they are literally uprooted and moved across the country to continue training in a completely foreign environment.  Giving an actor like Will Smith a personality as rich as Richard Williams to portray is a guaranteed recipe for success, and with such a high bar set in the lead role, it is natural that everyone else will rise to the occasion.
The movie is not flashy in terms of the technical aspects, but it was certainly never meant to be a visual spectacle.  Every ounce of this film was seemingly created to be a feel-good story that lets us outsiders into the heartfelt struggle of Richard Williams as he attempts to mold Venus and Serena Williams into the champions he always envisioned them to be while both protecting them from Compton and making sure he does not rob them of a childhood.  In that sense, this film is a resounding success, and while it will probably not be a box office blockbuster, it will likely be a critical darling, another step forward for the career of Will Smith, and based on the competition thus far, a film that may find some success this awards season.  I am definitely curious to see what kind of run this film has, and I will likely be returning to it in the near future.
