TF Rare Pairing Fest Day 1: Underworld

And I'm back at it with @tfrarepairing 's TF Rare Pairing Fest! And in this past year, I've seen Beast Wars and fell in love with it. This fic might not technically fit the fest's rules, but this idea hit me like a train and I had to write it. Based on the myth of Orpheus & Eurydice, I hope to write a longer, more fleshed out version later on.

It was a long shot, but frankly, Rattrap had nothing to lose at this point. 

After the team returned to Cybertron and were properly processed - not praised for dealing with the Preds or punished for losing so many of the crew, which was probably the best outcome they could hope for, since the Council didn’t really believe their story of saving the timeline from being erased - Rattrap tried to go back to his old life. He hopped from mine to mine as a demolitions expert, he hit the bars and the armor-optional clubs, he even started something with a botanist returning from her own exploration mission (a successful one, unlike the Axalon’s), though it didn’t last long. He kept in contact with the rest of the crew - Cheetor back in classes, Primal and Rhinox out on another distant colony, Silverbolt and Blackarachnia doing the newlywed thing. They were all doing well for themselves. 

But no matter what he did, he could not get Dinobot out of his processor. 

He didn’t know why the stinking Pred kept popping into his datatracks, but it seemed no matter how often he shut them down, memories or random thoughts would pop up. 

He’d be making a parts order and start to make a comment about the price of ammonium nitrate, only to realize Dinobot wouldn’t be able to give a snide reply. 

He’d walk through a market and spot a stand selling Earth junk, and wander over to look for any Shakespeare files, then walk away empty handed when he remembered Dinobot wouldn’t be able to read it. 

He’d spend a night with Botanica, smooth curves and many hands and soft nothings, and then dream about sharp claws and pointed teeth and caustic commands. There was a reason their thing didn’t last long. 

He didn’t know why he missed the big lizard. They didn’t even know each other for that long, especially by their race’s standards, and their thing - their relationship, there he admitted it - was even shorter. Then the noble idiot went and got himself killed, saving the future, and there hadn’t even been time for a proper goodbye (not around the others, even if they’d known or guessed) and he was gone. 

Then there had been the core, that shining hope to get him back. And it worked, for a moment, and Rattrap could hold and kiss the mech he loved, even in that weird boney body Megatron had crafted. And then, just as fast, he was gone again, and all Rattrap had was honoring his sacrifices by stopping Megatron. 

Then that was done, and no matter what he did, he couldn’t heal the ache in his spark. 

He never would have hit on this stupid, insane idea if not for a mech he met at a bar. The mech who sat next to him - Mindwipe, he’d called himself - started speaking of auras and seances, and three Mood Whiplashs in, Rattrap agreed to try one, certain nothing would come of it. 

But no, he heard it, felt it, smelt it. Dinobot - the real him, not the two-bit knockoff - was in that room, for that short time. He called him a sentimental fool and Rattrap called him an emotionally constipated lizard, and it was almost like old times. Then the seance ended and he was gone, and Rattrap had to know how to get him back. 

Mindwipe didn’t have a solution in his subspace, but he did share the stories he’d heard. Mechs who wandered down to the core of Cybertron and met with Primus, and if he found their wish true, it would be granted. Old legends, older than the Great War, but it was enough of a scrap to hold onto. 

And so, Rattrap returned to Cybertron. He gathered supplies, and left some messages for the others. If he wasn’t back in a month to cancel them, they’d know where he’d gone and what he’d done. Then he found a closed off passage to the first sublevel of Cybertron, and down he went. 

It was a dangerous journey, with collapsing caverns, space slugs, mutant cybertronians, and he swore he hadn’t had this many near-death experiences even on Earth. He was filthy, hungry after losing half his supplies to a stampede of slugs, and almost losing hope, when he literally fell into what he was looking for. 

The wall he had leaned against for a rest collapsed, and the sudden brightness as he tumbled out blinded him for a few minutes. Once he finally cleared his vision, however, he just knew he was in the right place. 

The walls were brightly lit, almost gleaming silver, and ahead was a door, twice the size of an Autobot, making Rattrap feel simply miniscule. Etchings covered it, most in Old Cybertronian that he had no hope of reading, but also images. An old bot with a long beard, a weird looking key, and in the center, Optimus Prime holding the Matrix of Leadership. 

Newly energized, Rattrap pushed himself to his feet and ran for the doors. He expected needing to pull them open, but once he got within a few feet of them, they opened on their own. He channeled his inner rat and squeezed through as soon as he could get his shoulders through, and found himself staring up at something he had only heard legends of. 

In the silver chamber, Vector Sigma was a bright, gleaming gold, light shining and reflecting off its many facets. The voice of Primus, some said, and the progenitor of all Cybertronian sparks, said others. Right now, it was his ticket to getting Dinobot back. 

He called out for Primus, and got the old bot from the door etching. He asked Rattrap why Dinobot should be brought back, and he poured his spark out. How it wasn’t fair that Dinobot wouldn’t get to enjoy the future he had saved. That there wasn’t a more honorable Maximal or Predacon out there. That Rattrap loved him, and he wouldn’t be leaving without him. 

The old bot turned to Vector Sigma, and had a silent conversation for several minutes, before raising his hands. A purple flash, and a spark hovered in them. He told Rattrap that a path to the surface would be formed for him, and Dinobot’s spark would follow. If Rattrap could reach the surface without looking back, then Dinobot would be restored his frame. If Rattrap looked back, however, Dinobot would remain in the Well of AllSparks. 

Rattrap accepted, changing to beast mode, and taking off like a shot once the doors opened. The hall outside was lit up, a line of blue lights guiding his path upward. He went as fast as he could, and as he went he spoke to Dinobot. Told him about what happened after his death, how they had to save the timestream, Blackarachnia joining the team, the deal with the clone (and several self-aware jokes of Megatron not being able to let Dinobot go). Depth Charge and Tigerhawk, and Megatron becoming a dragon, and the whole deal with the Nemesis. Returning home and trying to move on. 

As he spoke, he almost thought he could hear Dinobot’s commentary, scathing, caustic, sarcastic, but also honest and almost embarrassed at times when Rattrap brought up missing him. But as he got closer to the surface, he started to wonder, and doubt. What if this was just some trick? What if Dinobot’s responses were all in his head, created by a spark full of hope? How did he know…

He slowed to a stop, he couldn’t look over his shoulders in beast mode. He transformed, catching himself on the wall as his low energon levels made themselves known again. He rubbed his head, and started to turn-

You foolish rodent! The exit is just ahead!

Rattrap’s head snapped ahead, and yes, the lights led to an open door, almost shining with light, and he grinned. He tried to run ahead, but stumbled, so he just walked, leaning on the wall the whole way. Impossibly, that last little stretch seemed to take longer than any of the rest of the journey, and when he finally reached the exit, and pushed himself off the jam, he collapsed face-first to the ground. He couldn’t even pick himself up, or push himself onto his arms. 

Luckily, someone else was able to do so, and he looked up into the face he’d been dreaming of. Dinobot had a scowl, but Rattrap knew this one. This was the “you’re an idiot, but your my idiot” scowl. 

“I don’t know whether to call you insane or idiotic.”

Rattrap smiled, and managed to reach a hand into Dinobot’s arm. “How about you just call me yours, and we call it good.”

Dinobot rolled his optics, but his scowl softened to a smile, and when he lifted Rattrap into his arms, he didn’t stop him from pulling him into a kiss. The first kiss of the rest of their lives.

Alli is a very intelligent, lively, but anxious girl with low self-esteem, and for this reason, doesn’t show her vulnerable side to people who aren’t close to her.

Despite what you might think due to her aloof exterior, she's overly generous (sometimes to her own detriment) and very perceptive. Sadly, due to her anxiety, she’s not very assertive, which caused her not to have many friends while in middle school. She still overthinks a lot and has trouble paying attention since she’s always in her head daydreaming. Alli is also highly irritable, and will sometimes accidentally lash out at others, but she always apologizes in the end when she knows she's done something wrong.

Though, when she is with someone close, she’s pretty loud-mouthed and passionate about her ideas, her artwork, and her very apparent infatuation with anime.

Often referred to as “The school beauty”, Lei is admired by almost all of her peers. Her amazing charisma, along with her intimidatingly cool and beautiful looks immediately captures everyone’s attention.

But despite this, she’s really just a big fashion geek. She prides herself in her impeccable style savvy-ness and studies the latest trends all the time. Lei is also a very confident person, sometimes to the point that it can be overbearing, but she’s never arrogant and always means well. She’s a hopeless romantic and is constantly trying to look for someone who likes her beneath her looks. Although she’s fashion centric she’s also very athletic, being the co-captain of the girls volleyball team, and so devotes time to doing both hobbies.

Essence: Amiability

Being the heir to her father’s tea company, Von Botanica, Asako was born into a life of luxury. Due to this, she’s got quite the serious aura surrounding her. This is very apparent when she transferred to Sakuseed, as everyone tended to avoid her because they see her as unapproachable or out of their league.

Despite this, Asako’s actually very nice and kind. She’s pretty soft-spoken, and is quite the foodie, going out of her way to bake sweets as a sign of her appreciation to her friends. She never takes her wealth and lifestyle for granted and is always willing to help others in need. She’s basically the spokesperson of her family’s company, appearing in every ad to play as the “Herbal Princess”. Unfortunately she is very lonely, even in her own family since her mother and father are always on business trips. So she’s adopted the habit of just going out to her personal garden greenhouse and just enjoying nature.

She's a bit overzealous (and overconfident) , but at the end of the day she's just a little kid who wants to help others as much as she can (as bratty as she might be at times.)

Essences - the manifestation of a person’s personality or who they are, and on the dome, there’s one major word to describe that person inscribed on it. These essences are filled with what's called, essence ink.

Luminous Pens - the transformation item obtained by taking a cure’s Essence and a Pen Guide, which is basically a pen with no ink, and dipping the pen into the Essence’s ink. The way they transform is by using the pen, and spreading/drawing the ink on themselves. These pens also, later on, help with their dual attacks, where they put their Luminous Pens in each other’s Essence Ink so their spirits combine. They also can turn into their respective weapons, like Luminous Hammer, Luminous Rapier, and Luminous Bow.

Pre-Records - a book that keeps records of all existing precures and their teams. This book is kept with all fairies and will need to be signed in Essence ink for someone to officially become a precure. Research of teams that came before yours is highly recommended.

Enox J. Rios became an Iyawo this past April. And so for a year and seven days he must only dress in white. He is to eat all his meals on the floor. He is forbidden from looking into a mirror and cannot be outside after dark. He’s also not allowed to make any physical contact with the uninitiated. That means no handshakes.

As Yawo, Rios is a newly ordained priest of an ancient diaspora religion brought to Cuba by Congolese slaves. From Cuba it spread throughout the Caribbean, to the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Venezuela, and later to the US. It’s called Palo Mayombe, and its dark rituals involving human and animal remains and even grave robbing, is practiced in extreme secrecy. Like another Afro-Caribbean religion, Santeria, thousands of Latino New Yorkers are adherents of this syncretic faith which involves ritual dance, song, and drumming.

Rios is the owner of Botanica Babalu, a folk medicine shop in the Bronx that sells spiritual herbs, candles, and statues of saints. It’s a one-stop for Palo accessories including medicinal plants for aura cleansing. “This is a place I like to think of for healing and guidance,” he said.

As a palero, Enox said he has been ordained or “crowned” ocha. This means that an Orisha, or holy being of his faith, is aligned with his inner head. In essence, it gives him the ability to act as a spiritual medium.

“It’s very dark. Very draining. But if it’s used for the betterment of the people and for protection, it is amazing,” said Rios.

The spirits that paleros are in contact with are both ancestral and of the natural world. Worship for paleros like Rios centers on communication with these deities by using iron or clay pots called ngangas. The nganga is to a palero what an alter is to a Catholic priest. Palo means stick in Spanish. And that’s what goes into the pot along with earth and bones. But that’s not all that goes into a gnanga.

“You want the spirit to keep you safe from a gun, to keep you safe from a machete, from a blade, somebody pulling out a blade on you. So we implement all those things in the pot,” explains Rios.

Palo faithful believe that a spirit of the dead also lives inside. The spirits of Palo communicate through ordained mediums like Rios. Earthly items like guns or knives help the palero channel these spirits and summon protection from them. Clients pass through his doors seeking spiritual cleansing. He offers spiritual baths with medicinal herbs. Rios claims his prices are lower than other botanicas. “I’m here to give back. I remember having cancer, looking for some kind of positivity, some kind of light, some kind of hope to keep me going. And so that’s what I try to do.”

One patron needs a blessing before a job interview. Another isn’t coping with a death in the family. Some are trying to keep their marital vows sacred. Requests to keep husbands or wives faithful are common. Rios said instead he focuses on light and healing. But he explains that some paleros not only overcharge in times of crisis, but also use the spirits in their ngangas recklessly, to harm or worse.

“You can kill with a nganga. That’s how dark it is. It’s like a dog. Somebody comes into your back yard and your dog is trained. If that dog gets loose, who knows what you’re going to be in by the time they get the dog off of you,” he said.

Palo is almost always linked to Santeria. And ritual music and dance is fundamental to both. There is one main distinction: Santeria comes from the Yoruba people from Nigeria and Palo Mayombe comes from the Congo. Since Congolese slaves were brought to the Caribbean much earlier than the Yoruba, it’s harder to trace their music and culture directly back to Africa. In other words, Palo’s African origins are darker and more mysterious.

Peter Manuel is a professor in the department of Art and Music at John Jay College who has written extensively about music of the Caribbean. “Palo songs have some Congolese words in them, but mixed with a lot of Spanish. It’s just more syncretic and more acculturated,” he said. Manuel added that although the often feverish dance, pounding drums, and call and response incantations of Santeria and Palo are similar, tracing Santeria to the Yoruba is much easier because these Nigerian slaves were brought to the Caribbean as late as the 19th century. That direct line between Palo and the Congo is much more indistinct.

One similarity in both Palo and Santeria is ritual sacrifice. Every so often news about sacrifice of animals makes headlines in Greater New York City. When asked about this, Enox J. Rios is unequivocal. “This is an Afro-Caribbean religion and it’s one of the oldest religions. This is the way it’s been done. It’s tradition. But there’s room for growth.” he said.

And as an initiated Yawo of Palo Mayombe, Rios will now embark on his year and seven days of austerity as an ordained palero. He acknowledges the darkness of his religion, but says he’ll continue to use it for the sake of wellness and healing.

“There is bad and there is good in everything. Palo is heavy but at Botanica Babalu it’s used for love, stability, and everything that is positive.”

This month so much has happened in short amount of time I must say! We have been hard at work planning and preparing for the Juneteenth Jam Fest this month which has been going quite well because we are just going with the flow and letting things plug in where they fit in. Gigi and I work really well together because we are both intuitive, but also we are super sensitive and reflect off one another because we’re so similar and so different at the same time. I am absolutely grateful for our relationship and the way its growing and shifting. Its unlike any I have ever had before, and that’s refreshing!

Shes really a maternal mentor for me on the grid now. I look up to her and admire her strength, compassion and realness! And she knows how to RUN THINGS, OKAY! I am blessed with such amazing parents on the grid! Real. I think one thing that is important for anyone seeking parents on SL to remember is that everyone has RL that , for a balance person, must remain the priority in ones life. That being said, it’s unfair, really for anyone to expect someone to always be available to you to RP or play the role that you are expecting from them. I think its important to be clear about what your mental health capacity is and what you are going through personally, the more vulnerable you can be the closer you can become to people and connect and be able to trust that they wont leave you hanging or abandon you. Use your intuition and take your time. I never thought to myself that “I want SL parents” but I did intend to find family. I thought it would be with Wav, us being parents and building that way. But source had another experience in store for me on the grid I never thought would happen for me!

So yea we been getting all the details ready for Juneteenth Jam and people have already begun to set up their vending booths! Its dope af to me, I really am praying this event will plant seeds of unity and engagement amongst like minds and good people on the grid. No drama, no inner wound triggers or illusions of division keeping us from sharing and enjoying the fact that we are more alike than different amongst the afro-indigenous diaspora. (I started rambling so I cut that half out and moved it to the end of this blog post, I am just like my pops we can go on and on about the movement and why its important lmao) The point I was saying is Juneteenth will be litty! Plain and simple, gunna be so much fun! We’re gunna have dancers, mystory foods, art, and even have H.E.R performing! All are welcome it will be on the Meroe Museum campus.
