Neither am I. I likely won’t do this a lot but I’ll try to keep it short:

That game felt such a waste.

Ok, on to scheduled programming: I thought the Aussies were the stronger side up until the 16th minute where they started to get caught in transition. What I find so baffling though was Tony. Yes, 1) he bled in younger players to create depth, 2) he managed workloads of key players pre-WWC by resting them.

He’s emphasized the importance of the starting and finishing 11, but I was surprised the first choice was subbing out Raso for Polkinghorne. One advantage: No one was capitalizing in set pieces/Australia’s 15 corners and I understand Polkinghorne has the edge aerially.

But for someone like Tony who’s ~passionate~ about the finishing 11, why were these “game-changers” so late? Gustavsson waited 10 minutes (82”) after Nigeria’s THIRD goal. Sometime after the 60th minute would have been a more suitable time to bring on Grant for example, and not her first WWC appearance being the upcoming do-or-die game against Canada. Had they brought in Grant, maybe they could have toyed with Carpenter as a winger.

I would have liked to see them switch it up and have Vine/Carpenter combine on the right. Carpenter created the most chances (3) and the most passes (15) into the final third, but there weren’t any memorable overlapping runs from her partnership with Raso, who’s also lost the most duels (12) apparently, giving way to being exploited in transition. Kennedy has her moments but is still a wild card in my book when she’s on (more-so a liability), just recently “fit.” I would have preferred a Catley LB and Clare x 2 as CBs, or a Hunt and Catley CB with Grant LB.

Playing Kennedy up front in the second half was also a choice, but I guess that’s what you get when you gamble and bring in Kyah Simon sentimentally (which I feel is the unspoken truth.) She may have had a quality about her prior to her injury, but this is currently a person who has not played a single minute for as long as a full term pregnancy, not a “game-changer.” How could they think their star striker/Kerr would have her luck and never be injured?

In the end, they lost their composure and turned to their Hail Mary long passes. Somehow this is their failsafe though it didn’t work out at the Asian Cup even with Kerr present. They lacked creativity and the patience needed to create. No one was cutting inside until Chidiac came in at the 85th (!!!!) minute.

I have some belief that they can turn it around, as luck factors into this, but also preparing myself for a shock host exit.

This is for a great Aussie legend who have suddenly past away a few weeks ago. Shout out to Shane Warne and his family.
