Welcome to Oblivion--Ch. 11
Tumblr media
Chapter 11
I thought I’d never step foot in a gym like this again. The scent in the air was the same—PVC plastic stretched over tumbling mats, chalk dust and spring oil, sweat and hairspray—but the energy was different. The Cove wasn’t the weight room and practice gym at a tier one high school. It was a state-of-the-art performance center designed to efficiently churn out champions.
The building was bigger than the actual gymnasium for the basketball team. The main entrance opened up into a foyer with offices along either side. Athletic directors, coaches, trainers… they all had glass fronted offices that looked out on their players and athletes coming and going. Directly in front of the entrance was a wall blocked off by a glass case filled with photos, banners, and trophies. There were double doors on either side of the case, leading into the lower floor.
“Can I help you?” The voice came a from a woman with long dark hair pulled back into a messy bun. She looked to be in her late thirties or early forties, but she was in such good shape it was honestly hard to tell. “If you’re looking for the student health center, it’s on the other side of campus.”
I fidgeted, tucking my hair behind my ears and plucking at the elastic around my wrist. “I’m here to see Coach Helmsley.”
           She smirked. “Which one?”
“There’s more than one?” I replied, feeling like a fool. I flicked my elastic band hard enough that it stung. “I’m looking for the poms coach.”
The smirk stayed put as a pair of watery eyes surveyed me quickly. She stuck out her hand. “Nice to meet you. We don’t typically get walk-ons, but let’s see what you’ve got.”
I held up my hands, backing away a step. “No, I’m not here to try out. Peyton Royce sent me. She said she’d talked to you?”
Recognition clicked behind the coach’s eyes. “Addison Holloway.”
I nodded. God, this woman was intimidating.
A smile replaced the smirk. “Peyton’s been going on about you. I’m surprised the recruiters didn’t tell me you’d been accepted.”
She turned and walked toward a set of double doors leading into the lower gym. I rushed to follow. “GMU didn’t recruit me. I had a cheerleading scholarship to Georgia Tech, but got sidelined when I tore my ACL. I don’t compete anymore.”
I watched the coach lift her brow in question. “Still, you’ve had what… six or eight months post op? No brace. Walking fine. You never thought about trying to get back in?”
I shook my head. “Not really. No one wanted me once I got injured, Tech pulled my scholarship. By the time I was cleared to practice again, the season was over and nationals were down the toilet.”
Coach Helmsley pushed the doors open, and I got hit anew with the scent of a cheer gym. I had a sudden flash of memory, but shook my head hard to clear it away.
“That’s the high school game, Holloway. This is a whole new world.”
“Addy!” The Australian drawl pulled the vowels of my name long. I looked up to see Peyton bouncing over, her face flushed and hair stuck to her neck. “Oh, I’m so glad you decided to show up. Some of the girls have been watching your tapes…”
“Give me ten, Royce. For talking too much,” Coach Helmsley snapped. Peyton’s eyes went wide for a brief second, and then she turned and took off at a steady pace, taking the widest route around the room. “She wants you to be the new choreographer.”
“I’m sorry. I tried to tell her—”
“Don’t apologize. I’ve watched your tapes, too. And I put a call in to Lynwood yesterday.” Coach Helmsley led me toward a set of bleachers off to the side. She climbed a few steps and sat down, gesturing for me to join her. “Do you know what they said?”
My fingers went back to the elastic on my wrist, twisting it until it was so tight, I could feel my heartbeat in my fingertips. “I don’t know.”
“That you were the best athlete they’d had in years. And if you hadn’t gotten injured, you would have been NCA athlete of the year your senior season.” My gaze jumped up to hers. That was something I hadn’t expected. “There’s no doubt that you’re talented and you’ve earned your reputation. I want that reputation attached to my team, Holloway.”
It took a moment for those words to sink in. Coach Helmsley leaned forward, her gaze locked onto mine. “I’ll work with the AD to get you in and see if financial aid can float you a work study or something to compensate you. Practice is three days a week, workouts at six every weekday morning, games, and competitions. Let’s start with you taking a look at practice today. Then we’ll talk.”
She patted my knee and got up. She jumped from the bleachers and went out onto the floor where girls were spreading out the tumbling mats. Peyton jogged by on her eighth circuit and smiled. I looked up, expecting to see nothing but the ceiling. Instead, I found myself staring up at a glass-walled balcony that opened out into one of the second-floor weight rooms.
But more surprising than that was seeing the two men standing at the glass, looking down with grins on their faces. I rolled my eyes and waved up at Roman and Drew. The first crossed his arms over his chest, giving me an I told you so grin. The second wiggled his fingers playfully.
***
“So… when do we get to see you in the outfit?” Drew asked from across the library table. I had a pile of books open in front of me as I worked on a history paper. He might have been working on something important, but you’d never have known by the way he kept talking.
“You don’t,” I snapped for the fifth time. “I’m doing work study with Coach Helmsley. That’s all.”
Drew stretched out—I could feel his long legs pushing their way into my space under the table—and sighed. “That’s just a shame. You’d look good in it.”
The grin on his face and the playful tone in his Scottish baroque made it less of a creepy statement than it would have been coming from someone else. I stuck out my tongue. “I’m going to tell Roman you said that.”
My companion let out a laugh that echoed through the stacks. I kicked him under the table, not wanting to get kicked out of the building. He covered his mouth with his hand to stifle the chuckles. “Oh, love. Roman’s the one who wants to see it.”
I blushed, ducking my head behind a heavy volume on political interactions between ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt to hide from Drew’s gaze. It was just like him to remind me that he was one of my boyfriend’s best friends and that, at least a couple times, they’d talked about me when I wasn’t around.
“Roman needs to keep his mouth shut,” I hissed, mostly to myself. But I couldn’t help feeling a little exhilarated at the knowledge that he thought about me. Maybe as much as I thought of him.
***
The sun wasn’t even up over the tops of the trees when I walked into The Cove. It had been almost a year since I’d done any kind of activity more than walking or some yoga here and there. While Coach Helmsley hadn’t made any specific requests for my workout attendance, I was pretty sure she wanted to see how I compared to the other Pirate poms.
My heart turned upside down as I tied my hair up into a ponytail. The offices were empty and dark. Every step and sound echoed louder in the emptiness. I pushed through the double doors and took the stairs up to the second floor. It was a few minutes before six, but there was already a dozen or more athletes spread out in the weight room.
I found an open space out of the way and began stretching. The ache that went through my muscles and limbs felt good. There were a few spots that hurt more than they had before, but I was out of shape, so it wasn’t surprising. My knee was tight. It scared me to see the scar from my surgery stretch, the skin shiny and silver.
For a moment, I was back on that gym floor feeling my knee give out as the ligament ruptured. I felt it. I heard it. I’d never felt pain like that in my life. And I hadn’t felt it again since.
I sighed, shaking my head to clear the cobwebs. It was true that it was the first time since I’d been cleared from physical therapy that I’d put my surgically repaired knee through its paces. I wasn’t quite sure where to start.
The door swished open and closed several times. I glanced up to see Roman walk in alongside his cousins, Jimmy and Jey, and Baron. He wore a pair of basketball pants and a tank top that showed off the inked patterns that snaked up his bicep and onto his chest and shoulder. I’d never had the chance to see the crisscrossing mat pattern over his deltoid and the swooping swirls and triangles that made up the hidden pieces. I wanted to follow the lines and shadows with my fingertips.
I stood, trying not to draw attention. I didn’t know what the workout was for the poms, and I didn’t want to draw Roman’s attention.
“Addy!” Peyton’s voice echoed through the weight room. I ducked my head and pulled in my shoulders. I needed to teach her how to be quiet.
She bounced toward me, the movement and the call of my name drawing Roman’s attention. I watched his face change and knew the moment he saw me. His lips tipped up into a grin. His eyes lit up. And I felt like the whole world drifted away.
He crossed the room in a few strides. In a moment, he was there, his strong, warm arms wrapped around me. He tugged me tightly against his chest and kissed me without abandon. Like he didn’t care that there were dozens of people around. And it made my head spin in the best way.
“Morning, baby girl,” he said softly, nuzzling his nose against my cheeks and leaving soft kisses on my jaw. He made a deep rumble in his chest that vibrated through me until my fingertips and toes tingled.
           “Morning, Ro.”
He grinned, his hands skimming down to settle on the curve of my lower back. “I like the shorts.” He leaned around, making a show of taking peek. “A lot.”

Outtake from Divine Madness
Chapter 5 - Excerpt with added violence by Bruce Norris!
Robert Muchamore’s comment:
‘My editor said that Bruce beating someone up on a train platform was unnecessarily violent so the section below was removed from the final edit. However, Bruce is back to his savage best with the violence reinstated in this outtake!’
Kyle grinned at Bruce as he pocketed his phone. “John’s got the jitters, but we’re on.”
“Mission controllers always get the jitters,” Bruce grinned. “I think it’s in their job description.”
“And we’ve got ourselves a nice easy mark.”
The Australian’s blonde head stood out in the crowd, and because he didn’t know Kyle or Bruce they could follow more closely than John and Kerry had been able to follow Clyde. Still, the boys couldn’t get cocky: two teenaged Europeans stood out wandering the streets of Hong Kong after dark.
After walking a kilometre, the bobbing blonde head ducked into an underground MTR station, down a flight of steps and into a gloomily lit ticket hall. The Aussie had a pass and entered through the electronic turnstile. The boys didn’t.
“Shiiit,” Kyle said, as he headed up to the ticket machine with a hand burrowing down his pocket looking for change.
And elderly man stood in front of them, trying to feed in a twenty dollar note. It was agony watching the note whirr in and out, with a red LED flickering above the slot. Finally, the note got sucked in and a paper ticket and a flurry of coins clanked into the dispensing drawer.
“Come on, grandad,” Kyle said impatiently, as the old codger scooped up his change.
Bruce pushed in and began feeding his coins. As soon as the first ticket popped out, Kyle grabbed it. He raced through the turnstile and began sprinting down an empty fixed staircase that ran between two crowded escalators. Bruce was fifteen seconds behind him, but there was no sign of the Australian when they met up at the bottom.
“Which way?” Bruce gasped, as the crowds bustling around them divided off towards platforms for trains heading east and west.
“We’ve gotta split,” Kyle said anxiously. “You try eastbound.”
The boys headed through the crowd on to separate platforms. The metro was packed out and Kyle got jammed into a slow moving crowd on a short flight of steps leading down to the westbound platform. The crush made it impossible to see anything beyond the head of the person in front and no amount of pushing was going to help.
Bruce had an easier time making it on to the other platform, but a distant rumbling and rush of air meant a train was arriving at any second. If the Aussie was on the platform, he had to identify him fast.
Bruce scanned the platform, but couldn’t see the distinctive blonde head. To get a better look, he pushed through to a drinks vending machine at the back of the platform, wedged his trainer in the drawer where plastic bottles dropped out and used it as a step to raise himself above the crowd.
It only took a second to spot the blonde head, fifty metres down the platform. Meanwhile, the wind coming through the tunnel was blowing back Bruce’s hair and the two lamps on the front of the incoming train lit up the tunnel.
There wasn’t time to fetch Kyle. Bruce stumbled forwards as he stepped down, clattering into the back of a rough looking dude with punkish hair and slashed up jeans. He turned on Bruce with an angry face.
“Watch it you piece of shit.”
“Yeah, sorry,” Bruce said, nodding apologetically as he tried to push by and head towards the Australian.
But this wasn’t enough for the punk, who moved to block Bruce’s path. The train had just erupted from the tunnel and everyone on the platform was surging forwards.
“You wanna mess with me you little turd?” The punk asked. “Show some respect...”
Bruce didn’t have time for an argument, so the punk never got to finish his sentence. He thrusted a palm under the punk’s chin, making his head whip backwards and followed up with his other hand, driving an explosive fist into his stomach.
Bruce always enjoyed a good bit of violence and the sight of the stocky Asian punk crumpled up against the vending machine gave him a real kick. But there wasn’t time to stand around gloating.
The train doors slid open and Bruce ploughed against the crowds of people exiting the train towards the Australian. He managed to get fifteen metres along the platform, then cut into a carriage as a recorded voice told him to, Mind the doors.
The air-conditioned carriage was cooler than the stifling interior of the station, and Bruce felt a hint of relief as he grabbed a pole and the train began to move. It was standing room only, but the carriages weren’t packed out, so he began moving towards the front of the train, politely asking people to make way.
“Sorry, I’ve lost my auntie...’Scuse me...Coming through.”
The design of the Hong Kong metro gave Bruce a huge break: instead of separate carriages, the train was made up of an unbroken tube, with a bendy section every thirty-five metres to enable it to turn corners. The train was slowing up for the next stop by the time Bruce made it to the front section, which was less crowded than the centre.
The Australian had found an empty seat and as people stood up to get off, Bruce grabbed one for himself, squeezing between two fat ladies twenty metres away from his target. It was close enough to eyeball the Australian, but not so close that the Australian would pay any attention to him.
Bruce took out his phone, hoping to contact Kyle, but there was no signal in the tunnel, so he grabbed a discarded newspaper off the shelf behind. The text wasn’t English and while six weeks in a Hong Kong school had brought his conversational Cantonese close to the level of a native speaker, he still found the weird little squiggles the language was written in hard work. After a couple of lines, he gave up and stared at a car ad.

Team Voltron + Doggos
I see your pupper head cannons and I raise you ex-Vet Tech and daughter of an animal control officer pupper head cannons
Shiro + American Pit Bull Terrier
as a man who was kidnapped, possibly tortured, experimented upon, and forced to fight I’m actually surprised that nobody gives this man a pit bull
in america especially, pitties are used for dog fighting because of their amazing sense of loyalty and eagerness to please. they are easy to take advantage of
Just imagine Shiro visiting this big beefy pupper with scars all over its face because it reminded him of himself
now don’t think about the moment shelter staff tells him it was a bait dog - forced to fight and when it refused, it was used as bait for other, more willing dogs
that dog will be adopted in a heart beat and shiro will spend the rest of its life spoiling the shit out of that dog because they’ve both been through awful experiences and deserve happiness
Of course Shiro knows he can never have another dog with an ex-fighter without serious training but it is his ambition to have all the ex-fighting doggos
beefy man with beefy dog, both with sweet dispositions? A+++ shit right there
Keith + Dachshund
I know, i know, but hear me out
Anyone who works with dogs on a regular basis will probably agree that the dog breed mostly likely to attack without good reason is the wiener dog (Here.)
ok, i may exaggerate but these little guys are feisty and it was routine at the vet clinic to have one person open a dachshund’s kennel and the other be ready with a towel to wrap that little guy up bc they were ready to get you
also you have to tape the heck out of their legs to keep an IV in because they will tear it out (tell me that’s not Keith)
stubborn, jealous, clever, playful, and loyal to their family these little guys are so full of personality but like Keith, you gotta offer support and proper redirection so they don’t go nuts and lash out
also, Keith carrying his pupper in his jacket with just it’s little head hanging out? Perfect. Beautiful. Revolutionary. Astounding.
Hunk + Newfoundland
these are true gentle giants. they are so sweet and they’re really really smart! Like hella smart!
also they were breed to haul things so imagine Hunk’s Newfy pulling a small cart while he loads it up with parts
Most Newfies are super friendly with kids, adults, other dogs, and are wonderful family dogs because they will tolerate just about anything - much like Hunk who is a literal ray of sunshine who just wants everyone to be happy
while not overtly protective dogs, there are tons of stories about Newfies jumping into water to save people from drowning so that goes nice with Hunk’s disposition as a literal shield for the smaller lions
where Hunk throws some serious shade at people he thinks are shifty (Rolo and Nyma) these big boofers don’t really do that but like all large dog breeds, there is still the possibility of your Newfie being a bit aggressive towards things they deem threatening
Hunk’s Newfie would totes pick up on anyone Hunk doesn’t like and just sit there rumbling. Once Team Voltron notices they’re just like ‘yeah ok, these people are not cool because listen, this dog likes everyone.”
Hunk getting covered in dog slobber every time he comes back into the room? Classic. <3
Lance + Chihuahua
These are super social puppers! Like, they are seriously prone to anxiety when left alone so for a cuban boy who is probably used to having tons of family around before he got launched into space this dog is a perfect match!
they don’t really care for other dogs, they just want to be with people and be liked by people, much like Lance who wants to be a bigger part of the team but feels like he’s left out
he’s got an inferiority complex and so do these dogs
seriously, chihuahuas talk some serious shit and will start things with dogs 5x their size. Lance kinda started shit with Keith, someone who he’s been compared to the moment he went to fighter class. you see the similarity?
but in reality this dog and this boy are just nervous wrecks who wanna be loved, please love them
unfortunately they can be prone to aggression which stems from their protectiveness but then I think of how Lance lashed out at Shiro for choosing Keith over him to go to the Blades and it’s like, ah yes. there’s that inferiority again.
While not the most intelligent dog breed, with hard work they can still learn a lot of things! I get the vibe that Lance also doesn’t have a lot of that natural talent (like Keith or Shiro who seem to learn things naturally), but he works extra hard and it shows in the end.
Lance is totally smart, he just has to work at it
I’ve known plenty of chihuahuas that took a bit longer to get the basics but once they did it was never lost. You just gotta be patient. They aren’t Aussies.
Lance would totally have a long haired chihuahua who wears bows and it always perfectly groomed. They go everywhere together with the pupper usually in either Lance’s hood or his arms.
Lance gets a chihuahua happy dance every time he comes back. He has a million videos of it.
Pidge + Australian Shepard
Pidge is super intelligent and kinda defensive if you keep needling her and she really reminds me of an Aussie
If this dog doesn’t respect you it will never do a damn thing you want which is very Pidge, and this goes hand in hand with just how smart these dogs are. they are hella smart, one of the smartest out there!
Aussies can be super protective of their owners but you gotta watch out for them mouths. Being a herding breed they will not hesitate to give a nip if you’ve crossed a line
I feel like Pidge can lash out if she’s feeling cornered or irritated and while she may not intentionally be mean, she can still say some hurtful things (i.e. when she snapped at Allura before the food fight) much like an Aussie who is saying ‘Hey, don’t do that.’ and nips because it’s what they do
Pidge is young and sometimes you gotta be like, ‘ok i get you’re upset but here’s why that wasn’t cool’, which is exactly what you have to do with a nippy Aussie. Don’t let either get away with that shizz
also aussies can get bored pretty easily without something to do so I think to get her Aussie to leave her be while tinkering, Pidge has it trained to fetch tools, the other paladins, and hold things for her as she’s working
also you will never be able to sneak up on Pidge bc Aussies are hella alert and will bark at everything
Allura + Borzoi
these are some of the most elegant dogs I have ever seen and they just fit my beloved Space Princess
not a breed for children or the inexperienced, borzoi’s can be quiet and reserved inside but they are also perfect workout partners!
they are runners so they’re perfect companions for that
however they are chasers (cats and dogs smaller than them need to watch out) so it takes someone with great strength and an excellent trainer to keep a borzoi in check
much like a princess, you will have a tough time getting this breed to listen willy-nilly (let’s say, unlike a Labrador)
were also companions to royalty so these dogs are used to getting what they want
can be sketchy with people they don’t know so like don’t touch them suddenly (I’m looking at u Lance) but if their yours they’re literally so chill and kinda silly
Allura lounging gracefully in bed with a glass of wine with her equally elegant pupper who wears a diamond collar? 11/10
Coran + Schnauzer
Two words: Matching. Moustaches.
But that’s not all these two have in common! Shnauzers are:
super intelligent with a knack for spotting weaknesses
stubborn
excellence guard dogs
more athletic than you would think (Coran has got a booty my dudes)
these dogs are easy to train but they also train you. they will learn everything they can and use it to their advantage.
had a neighborhood schnauzer who knew all the schedules of the college kids who walked by and if you were one who played with him he would toss his ball through the gate so you can throw it
would also bark at you if you didn’t actually throw it, you had to throw that thing because he would not stop until you did
if you ignored him, he would ignore you the next day but eventually forgave you
Coran is a royal advisor, these are regal dogs
the AKC describes them as ‘smart, fearless, sometimes willful; spirited, but ever reliable’ which seems to fit Coran as well
Coran and his Schnauzer waltzing downtown during a warm sunny day is my jam.

MIAMIHERALD  —  Billie Kay interview; WWE NXT in Orlando, Miami, Fort Pierce
A subtle rivalry existed between Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as to who carried the banner ‘biggest WWE fan’ while growing up in Sydney, Australia.
“We went to the same high school,” Kay said. “I was three years ahead of her. Westfields Sports High, I was there for basketball, and she was there for dancing.
“We actually didn’t get along at first. We would see each other in line for all the shows WWE would do in Australia, all the signings they would do.
“One time Mickie James was signing near our hometown, and I remember Peyton being like four or five people in front of me in line, and I had been there about five hours at this point. So we used to have a little silent competition as to who was the biggest WWE fan.”
They eventually set aside their youthful egos, sharing a passion which led both to WWE NXT.
“[Peyton] joined PWA, and from the moment we actually spoke to each other there, we’ve been best friends ever since.”
PWA (Pro Wrestling Alliance) is the wrestling promotion in Sydney, Australia, where each got their start. Peyton in 2009 and Billie in 2007. They signed with WWE in 2015, assigned to the state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center in Orlando, where they learned the WWE way.
“Every single trainer at the Performance Center has their own style, their own uniqueness to this business,” Kay said. “I just love learning from each and every single one of them..I just want to continue to learn because there is decades and decades of knowledge in that building. So I want to make sure I’m taking full advantage of it.”
By doing that, Kay and Royce are two promising NXT superstars blazing a trail for others – fans and wrestlers alike, especially those in Australia – to be inspired by them.
It’s a process, leaving family and friends behind to pursue your dream in another country far, far across the long-stretched waterways.
“It was pretty hard,” she said. “I was very close to my family. They are my biggest supporters. They were so excited and grateful I got this opportunity with WWE.
“I still get homesick every now and then. It was a big thing. I had never left for another country before. I packed up everything that I owned in two suitcases and jumped on the plane..and 20, 24 hours later..I was in Orlando.
“I don’t regret anything, and I would absolutely do it all over again.”
Training in Sydney around 2007, Billie worked throughout Australia. It didn’t take her long to attract attention, and the athletic beauty began venturing to North America, wrestling for Combat Zone, NCW, Ring of Honor, Shimmer, and Shine.
Billie, 27, is friends with another Australian pro wrestling/sports entertainment talent.
“I am friends with Emma [now WWE Superstar Emmalina],” she said. “I was contacted through her as well as another mentor of mine, Jag, from Adelaide in Australia that WWE was having a tryout in Melbourne.
“I sent my stuff through, and I was fortunate enough to receive the OK to attend the tryout. It was three days, and it was before WWE had a live event in Melbourne. It was incredible, and then eight weeks later, I was fortunate enough to get an email, saying they were interested in signing me.
“That was one of the best days of my life,” she said with a smile. “I still remember screaming and crying and just jumping for joy with my family.“
How things change.
“The first person I told was Peyton Royce,” she chuckled. “As soon as I got the email I rang her, and I said WWE wants to hire me, and she said, ‘Me, too,’ and we just cried on the phone a good 15 minutes…and then said, ‘OK, it’s time to tell our families,’ and the rest is history.”
Part of that history is watching the maturation process of Kay and Royce in NXT. The hard work is paying off. They starred in a fatal fourway for the NXT women’s title against each other, champ Asuka and Nikki Cross at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio during Royal Rumble Weekend.
“It was overwhelming to say the least,” Kay said. “I had actually written out my 2017 goals a couple of weeks before that, and the first one was to wrestle for the NXT women’s championship on a TakeOver...and I was able to check that one off on the [bucket] list the first month of the year.
“And the fact that I was able to do it with Peyton Royce just made it a little more special.
“Going out there in front of almost 20,000 people is a feeling I want to continue to have over my career.”
Once part of the crowd, Kay is a longtime pro wrestling fan.
“I started watching wrestling when I was 10-years-old with my big brother [Jacob],” she said. “He sat me down in front of the TV to watch it, and ever since then I’ve been absolutely hooked.”
Now big brother is watching her on TV.
“It’s very surreal to him,” Kay noted. “We watched it all the time, growing up together, and we idolized the same wrestlers -- The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin. So for him to see me achieve my dream and to be here in NXT, it’s really special.”
Kay also excelled in basketball, beginning at age 5.
“I loved it,” she said. “I played in the ABA [Australian Basketball Association], which is kind of like college basketball [in America]. We won the state championship one year. It’s something I continue to miss.”
Though, following high school, at age 18, her mind was already made up.
“There were always opportunities to play basketball that would come about,” she said, “but I always knew deep down I wanted to be in WWE and NXT. So I never really put all my energy into basketball because I knew that being here in Orlando was my dream job, and I wanted to put 110-percent effort into that.”
Unfortunately, finding pro wrestling in Australia isn’t like the United States.
“It is a little bit harder [to do that in Australia],” she said. “There isn’t much wrestling in Australia as compared to America. So in that sense it was a little bit tougher to get into the business. Fortunately, one of my brother’s friends owned a wrestling school [PWA]. As soon as I finished high school, I joined up, and that was almost 10 years ago now...I just wrestled as much as I could around Australia and was fortunate enough to come to America a couple of times to wrestle.”
Now Kay is wrestling regularly in America, and she is striving to complete her list.

How to Motivate Yourself to Go to the Gym on Cold, Dark Days
[brightcove:5587982423001 default]
I love to work out, and as a senior editor at Health, it's a big part of my job. But I'm the first to admit that exercising when days turn cold and dark can suck. It's pitch black when my alarm goes off for a before-work workout, and it's dark again by 4 p.m. Plus, living in New York City means snowy, wind-chilled treks to the subway to get to my fitness locales.
But one thing I know very well about myself is that my mood sinks drastically in fall and winter. Exercise is in part an antidote to my winter blues. Because of that, I've found little tricks that help me stay consistent—and in turn happier and with more pep in my step overall—through the cold-weather months. Read on for the fall and winter workout motivation hacks that work for me . . . that might just work for you too.

Wake up to light and music
If I'm working out in the morning before work, the toughest part for me is physically getting out of bed. Once I'm up and standing, I'm set. So when my alarm goes off, I immediately switch on my bedside lamp and stream my Spotify workout playlist from my phone. Even if I lie in bed for a few minutes longer, the gentle light and good tunes keep me alert enough so that I won't doze off again and ditch.
Or treat yourself to an early holiday present and invest in Sonos wireless speakers. The Sonos mobile app allows you to set alarms so you can wake up to your pump-up playlist—a tip I learned from Ashley Wilking, an instructor at Rumble Boxing in New York City and a Nike trainer.
"I love choosing my songs based on what my day looks like," Wilking tells Health. "If I need to wake up at 4 a.m. to teach class, I like something to pump me up—I'll go for a rap or hip-hop mix. If I'm getting up to start my day but want to keep a mellow vibe, I'll go for the Coffee House Chill or Indie Acoustics playlists on Spotify."
Warm up on the way to the gym
If you're like me and can't (or just don't like to) work out at home, you have to find a way to make the chilly gym commute more manageable. If weather permits and it's safe to do so, try using the journey as a warm-up opportunity. "I always ride my Citi Bike to class in the morning," Wilking says. "It gets you moving before you have to move in your workout."
Wet or icy roads preventing you from jogging or biking your way there? Distract yourself with good music or a podcast. "I put on an audio book—my current listen is You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero—and take Mia, our mini Australian shepherd, for a walk along the water," Wilking says.
Follow a fitness influencer
Like many humans, I wake up and scroll social media for a bit before getting out of bed, which helped me discover the Insta-story of Joelle Cavagnaro, a personal trainer and high school health and physical education teacher in the New York City area.
Cavagnaro is awake at 5 a.m. every morning and chronicles her dark walk to the gym, her workout, and her (still dark) hike home. She provides hilarious commentary and super motivational words of advice. Watching Cavagnaro's efforts every single day makes me think, if she's out there getting it done before the sun is up, I can do the same.
"Knowing that I have people following my journey, my workouts, my routine, helps me to stay on track, just as much as it helps them," she tells Health.

Become a regular
For many months now, I've been hooked on a particular fitness studio—Switch Playground—and I've been more consistent than ever with my workouts. I'll get there rain (or cold, or wind) or shine.
To start, I love the actual workout—and that is key when it comes to making a fitness habit stick, especially during the toughest time of year to do it. ("It’s pretty hard to stick to a workout plan you hate," Cavagnaro points out. "If you hate the treadmill, don’t go on the treadmill.")
But another major part of what gets my butt to class is that I've become close with many of the instructors. I'll drop them a message, like, "I'm coming to the 7:15; I'm exhausted so I need a good push tonight!" Giving them that heads-up that I'm attending holds me accountable; and having a dialogue with the folks there makes the actual working out part less of a chore and more like a visit with friends.
So if you love a particular class, make it a point to say hi to the instructor and share your fitness goals. That way, you're expected to show up each week to meet them. Prefer to sweat by yourself at the gym? Introduce yourself to trainers and other gym regulars around the floor; chat with the guys and girls at the front desk. (Cavagnaro gets a "Sup, Big J?" from other early-bird exercisers at her gym.) The camaraderie will inspire you—as will a "Where have you been?!" if you disappear for too long.

Find (reliable) workout buddies
"Committing to a workout with a friend is a great way to make sure you get yourself out the door, as no one likes to let their friends down," Oliver Lee, a personal trainer in New York City and a former Barry's Bootcamp instructor (and one of my workout buds who I can always count on), tells Health.
Even if you don't like working out with a partner, you can benefit from the support of like-minded friends and family, Cavagnaro says. "I work out alone, and that works best for me," she explains. "But my husband and I are both passionate about the gym. We go to the gym together on weekends, separate for our workouts, and then meet up again after to walk home together."
I also often times reach out to people with little gym "check-ins." My mom and I, for example, cheer each other on via text, and we do this more often when the weather gets gross:
Commit to an early bedtime
As tempting as it is to stay up to watch one more episode of Stranger Things, powering down electronics and hitting the sheets at a reasonable hour is critical if you're going to beat winter tiredness and make it to the gym. This is the right time of the year to turn in on the early side, when darkness and chilly temperatures make curling up under the covers so ideal.
"I can’t stress this enough to my clients, my students, or anyone else trying to have a productive day," Cavagnaro says. "I could never do what I do without adequate rest and recovery time. I know my body and I know that I need at least eight hours of sleep to be a functional, productive member of society—and to have energy for my morning workout."
Cavagnaro also suggests thinking of an a.m. workout as the ticket to an energized day, rather than something you need to find energy for. "My workout itself is like my morning coffee," she says. "It starts my day, gives me the energy to get going, and sets up my day for productivity and success."

Schedule workouts strategically
Sweating it out after work? Don't leave yourself time to stop off at home first . . . and get sidelined by something great on TV or your never-ending social feed. "I tend to plan my workouts around times that I will be out of the house already, either on my way to a meeting or on my way home," Lee explains. "That way, I'm already outside."
Cavagnaro agrees: If she does have to hit the gym after school instead of at her typical 5 a.m. session, she brings all of her gear with her and goes straight from the classroom. "The motivation to go definitely dwindles down if you stop home, have a snack, have to change," she says. "I find that going right from work to the gym, alleviates those 'should I really go?' thoughts."

Talk yourself out of your excuses
There are still times I find myself in the comfort of my warm apartment coming up with every excuse in the book to avoid bundling up and mobilizing. When it happens, I like to remind myself of this: In the amount of time you will spend sitting around making excuses, you could be half way through a workout by now. (Slightly cheesy? Yes. But it works for me.)
I also ask myself what I would do in that time when I could be getting in a workout. Would I do a load of laundry? Would I meal prep for the next few days? Would I watch Sex and the City reruns? If I'm exhausted and know I'll use the time to do something else productive, I cut myself some slack. But if my gut tells me I'll waste the hour being lazy, I'll get my butt off the couch and do something to crank my heart rate, even if that means walking on an incline on the treadmill for 15 minutes.
