The Recs (Less Travelled)
I’m excited to bring you the first installment of my ‘roads less travelled’ recs! I will be doing another round of this, probably once the Ted Lasso fic tag hits about 25 pages, and then I’ll also grab a couple more fandoms to collect in there!
The Rules:
Each fandom/pairing was sorted on Archive of Our Own by completed works. Anything recced here was not in the first ten pages when sorted by kudos at the time of reccing. There may be some more well-known authors on this list, but the specific fics I’ve picked are ones that didn’t crack that top ten or just didn’t get much traction and I think deserve it, so hopefully I have also balanced it out with other under the radar (and still great!) works. As ever, I have a pinned post of my other recs (none have been duplicated from there), so you can also check those out! Under the cut you’ll find 10 recs in each fandom for:
Raven Cycle
Roswell New Mexico
The Old Guard
Inception
Star Trek (mainly Kirk/McCoy)
The Raven Cycle

"There is a single black feather and a printed out picture of Gansey, Blue and Cheng standing in front of some fucking monument Ronan didn’t care enough to remember the name of. Gansey sent it to Ronan’s phone some time ago, but it sat in his messages until Adam picked it up and grinned at it so hard that, one afternoon later, Ronan cursed and kicked and glared his old printer back to life in order to print it out.
Fuck, he thinks, I’m in love with a hoarder."
Adam collects things. Ronan is in love with him.

All These Things You Make Me Feel by SilverOpals394
It was late. Adam could feel the long day catching up to him as he left Boyd’s, all his energy exhausted. When he started his car, the tape deck whirred to life once more. He sighed and raised his hand to turn it off, but before he did a soft melody began to play.

“You wanna tell me why I had to hear from Henry Cheng that my boyfriend was at the hospital?” Adam hissed, though his voice wasn’t as acidic as it could’ve been. Ronan took small victories where he could.
“You don’t have a cellphone,” Ronan pointed out flatly. “It’s not like I could’ve gotten a hold of you.”

I have noticed an uncommon level of animosity in your responses to your reviewers (or rather, one reviewer in particular). It was honestly shaping up to be a pretty uneventful year before the Vatican got on Nicky’s bad side.
Or: three times in 2008 that the team genuinely thought about killing Nicky if only to get him to shut up about the changes to the Catholic English Mass and his unrelenting opinions on them, and one time Nile did.

Wars for the broken by Yuliares
Five years into his exile, Booker is joined by a companion he never expected to meet. Together, they try to work on healing.
Sometimes they go down to the sewers just so she can scream and scream. “I like to hear it echo,” she explains. “Underwater, you can’t hear anything. Here, at least I can be heard.”
“I don’t feel like a warrior anymore,” she tells him, throwing bread crumbs at pigeons. “I feel broken.”
“You’re still a warrior,” he says roughly. “This is still fighting.”

Over the next few months, Joe runs into Nicky every so often at the farmer’s market. Some weekends Nicky doesn’t make it, because of his work schedule - Joe doesn’t understand it because he doesn’t ask, though he does start to recognize when one of those missing weekends is coming up because Nicky will stock up on things with longer shelf-life. When they do run into each other, they make small talk and move through the stalls together.
Joe doesn’t mention it to Lykon when he stops by, because it is kind of weird, that Lykon’s ex-boyfriend texts Joe things like - If you’re here, the apples look particularly good this week and thank you for that recipe, I did not know what I was going to do with that much couscous

millie’s long list of malex fics | recovered echoes by romancandles / @goldenfiligree
“I didn’t know you were afraid of dogs,” says Alex.
“I’m not afraid of dogs,” says Michael. He just doesn’t get the human obsession with them: loud, dirty, dumb, always getting into everything.
Alex adopts a dog. Michael takes a while to warm to her.
comment: i’ll never be tired of fics that focus on alex’s adoption of a dog, and this one doubles as a kind of slow-burn return for alex and michael. the characterisation in this one is absolutely stellar, which won’t be a surprise to you if you’ve read any of this author’s other fics. i adore ripley. alex has my whole heart. the first scene with maria’s comment made me burst out laughing. the slow, warm build up to a malex ending is second only to michael’s begrudging love of ripley. the dialogue is perfect and there are so many wonderful lines that instead of me listing them, you might as well just go read the fic!
have a fic you’d like to see on the list? let me know!

5 & 15?
5. Books or authors that influenced your style the most.
this is weirdly hard to answer. i think in part because i don’t want to claim influences that i feel i don’t live up to (as if that’s not the whole point of influence) but also because i’m not really consciously sure which writers i’m trying my hardest to emulate.
i certainly think a lot about the way helen oyeyemi writes sentences, and the kinds of little details that she puts in her work which bring them to life. that is something i’m sure i’ve tried to copy, to much less success.
i think a lot about @septembriseur/kvikindi’s prose and ways of telling stories/writing character, and try to use parts of that, i think. and escapement in particular is a fic that i feel really got inside my head at a crucial time and made me think a lot about structure and also structure of image, structure of – imagination? it’s hard to explain. but definitely that story. and especially the moments at which the story or the narration seems to break, change. it’s such a clever piece of writing and i also feel it in my throat every time i read.
about grace by romancandles/@goldenfiligree is the other fanfic that i feel like… i have re-read approximately a million times, and its generosity with its characters and its ways of reading people through each other has really stuck with me. and i don’t know if i’m ever going to manage anything like it, but i definitely think about it a lot. and its imagery and phrasing.
i love jane gaskell’s weirdness, fearlessness, spikiness, and want to inhabit it. i have definitely thought of her as an influence more consciously than i have with the others i’ve listed – in whatever way that matters. as in, i have thought about her when considering writing sentences that take courage, or when writing weird things that break the world i’m writing. which means she is not necessarily always there as an influence but she’s someone i think of to shore myself up?
what else? there are a lot of writers i want to steal images, or ways of forming images from. hilary mantel. sofia samatar has changed the way i think about so many things, not least of all story and image and structure, although i’m not sure yet if or how she’s changed the way i write. when i was younger, my ways of writing were definitely shaped by b.s. johnson, and frank o’hara.
and the poet anne boyer has made me think so much about history & politics & speculation & magic in what i write.
ETA: i cannot believe that i forgot matt fraction. nothing has influenced my style -- either of like, dialogue, or of structuring a story in a non-linear way -- more than his run on hawkeye did. and i guess david aja, too. his way of drawing gesture, his way of making bodies move. i think about it a lot.
15. Where does your inspiration come from?
ha, god knows. i sometimes feel like i just gather images and small ideas in my head until they need to burst out, and then i end up with a weird poem that doesn’t make any sense to me. with poetry that’s a large part of it – phrases that get stuck in my mind, or sometimes/often a physical sensation or a gesture that i decide i want to explore or deepen. and if it knocks around in my head for long enough, if it sticks, i work out how to put it down.
for fiction, sometimes i get an image stuck in my head in the same way – often that’s where i get the very start of a story from. but i generally get ideas for story from history or non-fiction articles of some kind, or from podcasts, or from some small history that i already know about. so i wrote a story about remus and sirius as local newspaper journalists because my parents are and have been journalists on a local paper since the early 1980s, and i was interested in hearing my mum talk about the history of that and how the profession has changed. and… i guess i recently wrote a short little fic about arabella strange and her lodgings after the events of js&mn because i was interested in the construction of a house/home and the small objects that fill them after i visited dennis severs’ house last november. i guess i don’t really know how to write about big histories or anything, but small historical questions – even if they’re recent ones – stick with me. or at the very least. a small image from an article might lodge in my brain.
right now i’ve got the idea of the east anglian fens stuck in my head, especially the idea of skating on them. i know i want to write about it, but i don’t know my way in. so i guess that will percolate for a while. hopefully i’ll work it out.
anyway: who knows where thoughts come from? they just appear.

Saturday morning fic rec:
Author’s summary:
in the hollowed out space where his soul used to be, bucky builds a life, however imperfectly.
Words: 5780, Chapters: 1/1
Fandoms: Captain America (Movies)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Categories: Gen, M/M
Characters: James "Bucky" Barnes, Steve Rogers, Sharon Carter (Marvel)
Relationships: James “Bucky” Barnes/Steve Rogers
Additional Tags: Captain America: The Winter Soldier Compliant
My notes:
I love how quiet this story is, Bucky recovering himself through ordinary life. Also I appreciated how his life with Steve wasn’t immediately easy, they had to fight for it and to figure out how they fit together.

millie’s long list of malex fics | the roaring of the voices by romancandles
When he called his mom to ask about aliens, she was so loaded he could barely understand her. Classic mom: mixing up her Indian and alien stories, weaving in and out, tripping over her words, slurring into next week. It was his own fault for calling after sundown. He’d forgotten that she was best in the late  morning, when the alcohol from the previous night had begun to recede and she was only beginning to dip into the day’s stash.
“You wake up and realize what you were searching for was yours all along, right here in Roswell.” Angst with a happy ending. Post season one.
comment: holy hell; this is only the third rnm fic from this author and yet, i’m blown away. this is an amazing, angsty character study of alex in the months after season one, talking with Maria and figuring their shit out, dealing with Michael and figuring their shit out, as well as thinking about his mum. saying anything else would spoil the story, given the way the timeline is written, but the second half of the fic is just stunning and the end just got me right in the heart. i can’t recommend this fic enough. favourite line: Michael says, “twenty minutes,” as he’s staggering to the door, bowlegged, completely outraged that Alex has taken a direct shot at his sexual prowess.
have a fic you’d like to see on the list? let me know!
