If other things are happening and stressing me out, sitting with both of my feet on the ground makes me want to scream and cry because it's literally too painful. To dare is to lose one's footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.~Soren Kierkegaard. So often, I've felt like I had to try to do something because if I didn't try, I couldn't live with myself. A poignant example of facing a situation like this happened to me when Heather was only about 5 years old, and Logan was only 2. Their dad had deserted us and I was alone. I had just begun dating. While I was out walking one night, I thought, "How can I ever expect a man to choose to marry me when I have 2 young children with severe disabilities?" I felt trapped because I didn't know how to want anything but marriage. The thought came to my mind, "I could get on an airplane and fly away by myself and leave this life behind me." Shocked that my mind would even think this, I thought, "I can't do that because I could never live with myself if I did that." I absolutely knew without a doubt that I would lose part of myself if I left my kids. I knew I had to try to raise them by myself, even though I was scared. From that moment on, I accepted that I might never get married again. I was scared, but I decided I would stay single. I would make many friends who would lift my spirits when I got discouraged, and who would also be friends with my kids. Talking with friends and customers, who were also friends, helped me get through the next 20 years. When Heather was 21 and Logan was 18, I married Lynn Jorde at sunset on a beach in St. John. I'm so grateful that I dared to do what I had to do so I wouldn't lose myself, and so my children would know they are loved. Heather and Logan know without a doubt, they are loved more than words can ever express! We've had an amazing life, overcoming all our challenges together!
