When making this reading list, I realized there are not nearly as many YA fiction books featuring autistic protagonists as there should be. Which is unfortunately the case in a lot of minority representation situations. Anyway, please take a look at some we *do* have available at the Smith Public Library, and remember to always speak out about wanting to see more neurodivergent characters in your books!
Note: the protagonists featured in the books on slides 4 and 5 are not explicitly stated on the page as being autistic, but have been confirmed to be so by the authors.

Posted @withregram • @theautisticlife Can you relate? Hi, sitting still is weird and makes me so uncomfortable. If other things are happening and stressing me out, sitting with both of my feet on the ground makes me want to scream and cry because it's literally too painful. I wish it wasn't considered "weird" or "unprofessional" to sit on the floor or in similar positions since it helps many of us to feel comfortable and present in whatever we are engaging with. . . . #autism #autistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadults #autisticteens #autismo #autista #mujeresautistas #aspie #aspiegirl #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #aspergerslife #neurodiversity #neurodiverse #neurodivergent #autismmoms #autismdads #autismparents #autismmomsrock #autisticselfadvocacy #autismpride #redinstead #autismrights https://www.instagram.com/p/CN70o38HnzF/?igshid=lm9w8sxet7zz

Jake's teacher sent photos this week of him in class during what looks like A.P.E. First, he's on the treadmill. As you see my kid is super tall and big boy..lol..when he was born he was 8pounds,8 ounces and 22inches long! That's two inches short of two feet! So, he's always had growth spurts. But he got taller than when I noticed a couple of years ago when he was 14.And this year when he turned 16, I one day saw that I had to look up at him just to look him in his face. 😄This boy is going to start having to duck just to walk into rooms real soon, lol. Jake towers over me and he the way he eats and outruns people and take them down (when they try to catch him) I constantly tell people, if he wasn't severely autistic, Jakob could've had a promising career as a linebacker or fullback...lol🤣...also I noticed he was barefoot on one foot and socked on the other. Not sure why for these photos but I do know when he gets real comfortable, he takes off his socks and shoes. The final photos are of him learning what looks like nerf archery, which looks fun. I remember back in junior high (7th grade) in P.E. we learn regular archery outdoors. It's been decades but I can still work a bow and arrow. So, those photos brought back memories. #biracialkid #biracialteen #autisticteen #autistickid #blackson #teenson https://www.instagram.com/p/BqSSy5HBloc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=f30gky2r2wsl

Any headcanons for chris with an autistic daughter? :) sending hugs bestie 💕
Tumblr media
Hey bestie, I hope you’re well. Thank you for the hugs 🤗 I hope you like this and it like you wanted 💕
Headcannons of Dad!Chris autistic daughter
————————————————————
This is a request so thank you for this it was joy to write I hope you like it
————————-
Summary: Multiple little headcannons of Chris and his Autistic daughter Y/n
——————————
Mentions of meltdowns and I can’t think of anything else
——————-
Paring: Chris Evans x AutisticTeen Daughter! Reader
——————————
How he deals with a meltdown:
- Uncle Scott, Dad and yourself were in Boston with the family at your grandmas house, it was loud and the texture of your clothing was really getting on your nerves.
- Chris and Scott noticed how uncomfortable you started to get due to fact that loud situations were not something you liked a whole lot; it didn’t help that texture was an issue too. So it was going downhill quickly as you started to stim and shake tears visibly lining your eyes, Chris moved quickly to get you out of view of family knowing that it helped being in a room with just him. So he lead you up to his old childhood bedroom.
- Getting a change of clothes he always kept at his Ma’s for this reason that you were comfortable with, he sat you down and rocked you to help with the meltdown that you were having over this.
- “Sweetheart, it’s okay I’m here. You’re safe.” He reassured noticing that she was biting her thumb as a coping mechanism so I gave her a chewy necklace. Because this is one of the things her CBT therapist Amelia said it was okay to do but not with her thumb but with something else like a necklace as it made you cope and lessen the anxiety with the meltdown but also just in general situations.
- “Mmmmm” I replied not trusting my voice.
After this we laid down together i pressed some gel shapes that were kept in the fridge or freezer onto your pressure points to ground you more.
Time skip
- Scott came in later after y/n had calmed down now just laying in her cocoon of weighted blanket on top of me with some of her favourite comfort food, with being the best concerned uncle ever.
- He gave me that look “she’s okay Scott she just got overwhelmed with the texture of her clothes and how loud everyone was.” I said reassuring him, he gave me a look of understanding and I thanked him for making her comfort food. It was a little longer before y/n was comfortable going back downstairs.
However this was one of many times Chris was the best dad with Y/n
How he acts around you:
- Chris acts the same before her diagnosis and the same as after her diagnosis, he knows there is now an explanation for why and how they came to the conclusion of the Autism diagnosis. But it didn’t change a thing.
- Scott was the same and the whole family they accepted the meltdowns, the behaviour and the changes that had to happen to accommodate y/n and no one batted an eyelid.
- Chris said it made you feel better about you’re emotional well-being since you were enabled to pinpoint Why? How? Or what? You were feeling and you yourself even noticed working with your family, CBT therapist Amelia that it made you more comfortable in your skin and around the family. Not the ‘weird feeling thing’ that you’d describe as what now was a meltdown.
Accommodating to your needs:
- Chris always had safe food on hand in the house it was ALWAYS stocked up, it was like that at Scott’s house, his Ma’s house. The whole family had a little basket like this in their pantry.
- Sensory toys were a massive thing too, whether it was chewies, stress balls, peanut gym balls, custom texture pads. Everything under the sun. What you needed or he thought would help he got. And absolutely more to spare that was shared around the siblings houses and his ma’s once again.
- Weighted blankets in every room, in the car, at Scott’s and his Ma’s. That and a change of clothing that were good for when you were having texture issues with things and this was in place to try and prevent meltdowns.
- Bubble tubes, a sensory room with a tepee, mats on the floor so you could just chill with your dad and dodger or without.
- A full body wrap swing (body sock) that was recommended by Amelia to help with grounding among other things like a sensory table, an iPad for when you were non-verbal, yoga balls, wiggle pads and bouncy bands for chairs or different seating when you couldn’t focus too.
- And the best thing he could give you, was comfort. Just straight comfort. Also dodger was basically your emotional service dog too ❤️
————————————————————-
I apologise for how long this took to write I got really distracted with everything but what I was focused on which was this. But nevertheless I hope you enjoy.
Requests and any asks are welcome! ❤️

🧼 Ryan has been struggling to remember how to do his own laundry (a task he is only just now learning because his foster mother wouldn't teach him because he is a boy. 🙄 Fortunately we aren't sexists, OK boomers, or time-traveling parents from the 1950s, and neither are our appliances!). . Up until now I have shown and guided Ryan through the laundry process, with no luck in getting it to "stick" - and Ryan becoming increasingly frustrated and upset with himself. Yesterday he asked me if I could write down the steps. I did him one better: I slapped color-coded labels on the laundry products and whipped up a color-coded instruction sheet. . Tomorrow I'm going to update the current taped instruction sheet to a laminated one, and then Ryan will be good to go. No more confusion, no more anxiety, no more self-doubt and no more tears will make every single label I need to remember to make worth it. 💗 (And with the move home PLUS the pandemic PLUS the abrupt change to homeschooling, we've had a lot, and I mean a *LOT*, of meltdowns and stimming behaviors to work through lately. Honestly? We can't get from the end of one meal to the beginning of the next without at least one emotional outburst. 🙁) . #autism #autismspectrumdisorder #ASD #Aspergers #childwithautism #kidwithautism #teenwithautism #teenagerwithautism #autisticchild #autistickid #autisticteen #autisticteenager #specialneedschild #specialneedskid #specialneeds https://www.instagram.com/p/CAhZaOaHMe2/?igshid=d2lix4hyyz8p

Ela não vem sozinha senão acompanhada de azul céu, dourado e verde \ This one brings back intense memories from my last months living in Brasilia. It's a feeling of accomplishment along with longing for what once was, is and what will be: the progression of seasons. It would be very difficult for me to describe the exact feeling, but it's kind of a mix of happiness and sadness, it's a music that can touch opposites at the same time. It doesn't come alone though, this music is blue as the sky, green and golden. #autismspeaks #autism #autismo #autisticphotography #autisticadults #autisticteens #synaesthesia #synesthesiaart #bandofhorses #quadradinhobsb #brasil #brasilia #aspergerphotoart #aspergers #aspergerssyndrome #asperger (en Asa Norte Brasília) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEAhQDrh3yv/?igshid=6lflq2tzcvk2
