Hi all! This is a lil progress update for those interested. In a rush? Here's the cliff notes!
The map site at miku.earth is back: sorry for the delay in fixing it! Check it out: it has six hundred Mikus!
Including the hyuge ol' queue, we've collected over 3,100 mikus!
Representation is important! I've been using some fancy stats to avoid bias. To that end, please help make sure we have a Miku in every African country!

I ran into a kinda complex issue and it was a whole Thing. I was working on the site the whole time though! Sorry for the delay, and I hope you enjoy now it's back up and running.
This site has six hundred Mikus on the map, and more are added each week. It was recently rebuilt from scratch (fun fact! I am not a web developer) so I hope it is far zippier and less glitchy as before. A mobile-friendly version is coming soon too!
Also: check out the new search feature! In addition to the title, artist name and region(s), it can also search for the categories indigenous and historic!

We've reached more than 3,100 mikus!
Even at its Miku-per-hour speed, the queue will continue until 2025 at least! This is with thanks to an incredible number of contributions, including donations of literal thousands of links.

Oh and by the way: over two thirds of the collection are tumblr posts! Given that this was originally a twitter trend… if you know any Twitter users who are into this trend, please reach out. Some napkin math tells me there are at least 10,000 works of art total out there, which is, by the way, surreal. Let's make sure not a single one is lost.
If you're super curious, the collection is public! I have some tools to auto-annotate (I do not want RSI), but be aware the backlog isn't vetted.
Representation is important!
Fun as this trend is, this project was always intended as a serious study into how people represent their own culture through artwork. I'm no anthropologist, but I feel it is important to make sure this collection is respectful and bias-free. If we're to represent the world, we have to avoid underrepresentation!
To that end I've used some fancy statistics to calculate a "representation value" for each country. Here's a table if you're into the stats of it! This info is handy to help me with the queue – especially with tweets as they're a lil more effort than a carefully-tagged reblog. Of course, Indigenous, hyperspecific and low-note Mikus get priority.
And, well, of course you can see on the site there are purple regions for countries still missing a Miku. In particular, please help me make sure every country in Africa is represented.

that said. i've been using linux for a few years and i've actually come to realize that linux advocates are honestly very frustrating. mainly because of how they keep kinda. brushing past the fundemental problem with linux.
the one thing i have learned about linux is that it is fucking annoying. Like, yeah, there's solutions for basically everything, and I can get anything working with some elbow grease.
But you know what I don't want to do? put in fucking elbow grease to get my computer to work.
my laptop has had an issue where the auto-sleep functionality crashes. The AUTO SLEEP. CRASHES.
MEANING THAT IF IT'S SLEEPING, MY LAPTOP WAKES ITSELF BACK UP EVERY 3 MINUTES. AND THEN GOES BACK TO SLEEP. AND THEN IT CRASHES AGAIN.
I have not been able to debug this issue because are you fucking kidding me? How the fuck do I even debug it? What the fuck do you mean auto sleep crashes? Literally everyone I ask about it looks at me like I'm from mars but it renders my laptop functionally useless due to the damaged battery life. This is the sort of thing that, to an average normal human being, is pretty much unacceptable.
Like. Sure, if you're a programmer or whatever, I'm sure all this shit is great. But the average user doesn't want infinite macros for opening programs instantly with a button press or performing git interactions with a key command. i don't care about that shit. you know what I do want? The ability to open an mp4 file and have the subtitles reliably work. I want my laptop to actually sleep when I push sleep mode. I want to actually be able to find the files for my steam games easily. I just want my laptop to work.
if it wasn't for how easy it is to set up printers, i would be going back to windows in a heartbeat. but holy shit is it easy to set up printers on this thing. holy SHIT is it easy to set up printers

I have posted a little snippet of the Max pregnancy here :)
The ballet x mafia one is a fic that I have outlined and have spoken about a little on here. . It's omegaverse. Omega Charles is the only male omega in his ballet company and keeps getting passed up for the principal roles. That is until Alpha mafia boss Max brings his mother to the ballet and spots Charles in the background and instantly decides the omega should be in the spotlight. With Max's connections all around Monaco he is in the perfect position to make that happen.
Safety is key is a fic that I started over a year ago and then pulled it because I didn't have time to work on it. It's a dystopian fic and influenced by 1984 and a film called equilibrium. Drivers all live in a compound and take a drug each day to suppress emotions. They pledge their allegiance to 'Big Brother' who is the FIA. One day Charles misses a dose and suddenly starts to feel the real rush of racing for the first time!! I feel like I need to bring it back and finish it before it actually becomes a terrifying reality!!!
I have included a brief snippet below but it will need editing
Charles rarely needs the alarm to wake him anymore. His body is attuned to his daily routine and he wakes naturally a few minutes before the shrill noise rings out all high pitched and piercing through the air. It rings for exactly 30 seconds at 7am. Always 30 seconds. Always 7am. The early morning call provides each of the drivers who occupy the small apartment enough time to get showered and dressed before sitting down together for breakfast.
His wash bag is sat waiting on his nightstand along with his freshly laundered towel so he makes a grab for it and heads down the corridor to the communal shower area. Max and Carlos have already beaten him to it and the two men are both lathered up as they casually chat under the spray of the water. 
Charles slips out of his pyjama shorts, half listening to his team mate discussing the intricacies of the new technical directive that is due to come into force in Spa. He decides not to join in the conversation seen as he has only planned out a few minutes for shower time and doesn’t want to get sidetracked. Thumbing over the activation pad he closes his eyes and lets the water soak him. The temperature is set to 37 degrees. The perfect temperature to wake you up without causing any shock to the nervous system.
As planned Charles keeps it brief before heading back to his room and leaving Carlos and Max deep in discussion. The deep growl of thunder rumbles in the distance. Outside the wind is picking up and an ocean of leaves swirls in spirals off the ground, a hue of orange and brown dancing about. So far it appears to be a dry storm. Charles checks the weather app on his FIA issued phone, no rain is predicted and the storm should clear up in time for qualifying apparently.
After slipping into his Ferrari t-shirt and plain black pants he still has 17 minutes until breakfast, more than enough time to fit in some stretches.  The instructional poster on his wall is surplus to requirements at this point, his body can complete the moves on auto pilot. There are five basic stretches to be completed at some point each day. When and where is left to each driver’s discretion. It is one of the very few decisions they need to make for themselves. Much of their time and actions are planned out to precision. It’s the cost to be paid for the honour of being a formal one driver. And it’s a cost Charles pays willingly. He’s been part of the FIA programme for so long that he can barely remember his time before entering the institution. 
Charles has always found it easier to get his stretches out of the way before breakfast. As he presses his left arm across his chest and holds it in position with his right arm he recites the daily mantra.
“The FIA is all knowing. Their job is to protect. Safety is key. Feelings and free thought are dangerous.”
He repeats it ten times as required to do so. The words fall from his mouth seamlessly, each syllable ingrained in him after years of daily affirmations. 
As he finishes the last repetition he pulls open his bedside drawer and reaches around for his vial of Prototype 2X. He manages to unscrew the cap just ask almighty clatter of lightning hits right outside his window. It sounds almost like an explosion. Charles’ doesn’t feel anything apart from the sound of vibrations infiltrating his ear drums. His body reacts though, the sudden intrusion of noise making him drop the vial that was clutched in his hand.
As the vial smashes open all the reflex training in the world isn’t enough for him to be able to scoop up the contents. He’s nothing more than a spectator as his emotion suppressant soaks into the wooden flooring. It’s the first time he’s ever done anything like this and it’s unbelievably bad timing seen as it’s his last vial until the monthly delivery tomorrow. He makes a mental note to call by FIA headquarters when he arrives at the track. A replacement dose is easy enough to obtain although there will be a mountain of paperwork to fill in. He will likely get points on his super licence for wasting a dosage but it’s not like he can hide the fact from anyone, he needs his daily injection, the consequence of not taking it is not worth considering.

As with other state-owned firms, the inability of successive governments to invest in Pakistan’s National Transmission and Despatch Company has left it prone to failure.
More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic and energy supply challenges dampened Pakistan’s growth prospects and constrained efforts to diversify its export base away from low-value-added products – such as cotton and rice – to higher-value goods.
In late 2022, meanwhile, monsoon floods displaced eight million people and cost the country $30bn in damage. The loss of cotton crops ravaged the country’s textile industry, a key source of exports. In all likelihood, Pakistan’s growth rate fell into negative territory in 2023.
Pakistan, which imports much of its food and fuel, consistently records large trade deficits. Owing in part to elevated commodity prices, foreign exchange reserves dwindled to less than one month of imports last May, leading to shortages of vital goods.
The following month, Islamabad narrowly avoided default after it secured a $3bn loan from the IMF – its 23rd fund programme since 1958. However, the lending package came with strict conditions and unpopular reforms.
As part of the deal, the government agreed to impose new taxes on its faltering power sector. It also agreed to lower utility subsidies, which led to sharp hikes in electricity prices, hitting poorer households particularly hard.
Inflation, which reached nearly 30 percent in December, has been climbing since the start of last year after Pakistan’s central bank agreed to liberalise its exchange rate as part of a pre-existing IMF programme. Once exchange controls were dropped, the value of the currency fell sharply.
The Pakistani rupee was Asia’s worst-performing currency in 2023, depreciating by roughly 20 percent against the US dollar. “We think the rupee will continue trending down slightly,” said Krisjanis Krustins, a director at Fitch Ratings. “This will lower Pakistan’s current account deficit as goods from abroad will become more expensive, compressing import levels.”
According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the country posted a balance of payments surplus of $397m last December.
Krustins told Al Jazeera, “Pakistan’s goods imports fell by 27 percent in the last calendar year. As for exports, they continue to be held back by limited human capital and poor infrastructure. So, corrections in the trade account have had a depressing impact on the economy.”
Recent job losses have lifted the official unemployment rate to a record high of 8.5 percent, pitching an additional 8.4 to 9.1 million people into poverty.
Separately, Pakistan has long suffered from “structural issues”, says Tariq Banuri, professor of economics at the University of Utah.
“For starters, Pakistan’s growth rate is not high enough to absorb its rapidly expanding population. It’s also one of the world’s worst performers on tax collection. Agricultural landowners are exempt from income tax, and there’s no capital gains tax on real estate.”
Successive governments have stopped short of imposing robust tax legislation for fear of upsetting powerful business interests, Banuri said. “But that may change this year because of the debt situation,” he added.
Islamabad’s failure to boost tax revenues and modernise state-owned enterprises has generated persistent fiscal deficits and a large debt burden. In absolute terms, external debt reached $125.7bn last year.
Looking ahead, Pakistan faces $24.6bn in external debt repayments by the end of June, the bulk of which is owed to China.
China is Pakistan’s largest bilateral creditor, and Beijing agreed to roll over $2.4bn in loans last year. Many economists expect the incoming government to try and secure longer-term financing from the IMF – its current deal expires in April.
Given the cutbacks to public spending last year, “further fiscal consolidation is unlikely”, says Yousuf Farooq, director of research at Chase Securities. “The Fund is going to try and eke out further conditions, but probably from wealthier sections of society.”
“Assuming the new government can get another IMF loan, it will struggle to repay unless it imposes new taxes on agriculture and real estate. If it can also roll over short-term contracts with longer repayment schedules, I’m hopeful that debt will fall in the near term,” he said.
In the meantime, foreign investment continues to be hamstrung by security concerns along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Since the Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021, Islamabad has accused its neighbour of harbouring fighters carrying out attacks on its soil.
An unfolding political crisis is also threatening Pakistan’s economic recovery. Today, Islamabad’s fragile democracy is overseen by a caretaker government following Imran Khan’s dismissal as prime minister in April 2022.
The legitimacy of the February 8 elections has been questioned as Khan is absent from the ballot sheet. He is in jail on corruption charges. And while he is disqualified from running, Khan’s approval rating stands at 57 percent, higher than any other politician.
As things stand, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) – is favourite to win. Sharif’s PMLN has assumed power four times in the past three decades, under either himself or his brother Shehbaz Sharif.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court further weakened Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) campaign by banning the use of a cricket bat as its symbol – a serious setback in a country where millions of illiterate voters identify candidates by their party logos.
For Banuri, the economics professor, “People are right to criticise Pakistan’s political system, which is dynastic and extractive. But for all that, I remain an optimist. I think the worst of the economic crisis is behind us.”
“While I always hope tomorrow will be better than today, I do not think the main political parties will offer meaningful change. They seem to be far more concerned with getting into power,” he added.
