Unwound & Circuit des Yeux Live Show Review: 3/8, Thalia Hall, Chicago

I can’t think of another way to say it: How lucky are we that Unwound decided to reunite? Mid-way through their incredible set Wednesday night at Thalia Hall, my friend (who had a spare last minute ticket) turned to me and remarked, “I feel like this is the closest we’ll ever get to seeing Nirvana.” The comparison is apt. If Nirvana’s is one of if not the most acclaimed band of the 90′s, Unwound is an under-the-radar pick for the best; the A.V. Club named them as such 10 years ago. Over their decade of releasing music, the Washington-based band churned out seven records of post-hardcore classics, from debut Fake Train and sophomore album New Plastic Ideas to their final art rock masterpiece Leaves Turn Inside You, never straying from the DIY ethics they came to be known for.

Unwound broke up in 2002, as bassist Vern Rumsey’s alcoholism worsened, and serious efforts to reunite were hampered by his addiction as late as 2019. With Rumsey’s blessing, frontperson Justin Trosper and drummer Sara Lund rehearsed with bassist Jared Warren, who never got to tell Rumsey about the band’s intent to play shows before Rumsey’s death during COVID. But in an era when artists’ lives in between album release cycles are often displayed for the world to see, the combination of the pandemic and Unwound’s secrecy left the general public comparatively in the dust until last summer. On July 12, the band announced a reunion tour, revealing that they had practiced earlier that spring with the lineup of Trosper, Lund, Warren, and Nocturnal Habits guitarist/keyboardist Scott Seckington. In a statement proving the band’s ethos was as strong as ever, Trosper said, “Starting over again is a rebellious act against our failure.”

Indeed, Unwound’s music is often rebellious without sounding like our schema of rebellion, their dynamics and tight musicianship on display Wednesday night. “Envelope” deftly switched from loud to quiet and back. “Disappoint” burned into its climax. The one-two-three punch of “Valentine Card”, “Kantina”, and “Were Are and Was or Is”, presented in segue like on Fake Train, started as charging punk before expanding into instrumental post-rock, apropos for a band whose evolution in their recorded output was more sneaky than obvious. It’s hard to say, but I can’t say the band sounded much different than what I imagine they’d have sounded like with their original lineup, both members and numbers-wise. If anything, with four instrumentalists on stage, they were more rounded than sharp, all-encompassing and enrapturing.

A few songs prior to the band’s intermission (more bands need an intermission!), Lund asked, not taking for granted the band’s fanbase, “How many people drove far to get here?” At least 1/3 of the room shouted. She continued, “Thank you to young people. We need you.” It’s not just lip service. The band has been handpicking openers for their set, and Wednesday’s was none other than Circuit des Yeux, one and a half years removed from the release of their Matador debut -io. Their performance was the most expressive I’ve ever seen Haley Fohr. Her deep, booming, operatic voice was there as usual, as was her immaculate picking and strumming, but this time, she repeatedly pounded her chest in conjunction with Ashley Guerrero’s drums, primal in her utterances. Throughout the set, Fohr dragged around her microphone, emulated fainting spells, and danced, her stage presence matching the drama of her music. Longtime collaborator Whitney Johnson of Matchess distorted her viola to sound like an electric guitar on “Dogma” and used pedals to create an enormous sound. Though I was glad to hear -io songs live for the first time, Reaching For Indigo’s “Black Fly” was the unabashed highlight of the set. Fohr’s guitar was Crazy Horse-level distorted atop Guerrero’s drum rolls and tom-work and Johnson’s plucking. As Johnson’s viola took on fiddle-like timbres, the song could have passed for a Songs: Ohia jam.

After performing “Vanishing”, Fohr declared, “Happy International Women’s Day to Sara Lund.” With an all-female band, opening for punk legends who themselves supported radical feminist politics, it was the cherry on top of a night that a year prior nobody in the room would have ever expected, even the folks on stage.

But to suggest MacKinnon doesn't pay attention to the world around him would be inaccurate -- because he does. Especially when the conversation turns to what happened at the NHL All-Star Game back in February. More specifically, when he and Crosby posed for a picture with Justin Bieber.

Bieber stood between Crosby and MacKinnon with the pop star leaning closer to Crosby. The running joke on social media was that Bieber was going to crop MacKinnon out of the photo.

And then the joke became reality. Bieber posted several pictures from All-Star Weekend, including one of just him and Crosby, with the only vestige of MacKinnon being his right shoulder and his No. 29.

Others noticed. The most-liked comment on Bieber's feed was about MacKinnon, with someone writing, "damn mackinnon got the crop." It led to several responses ranging from, "what'd he ever do to you justin" to "i'm not even an avs fan and this hurts me lol."

Another person chimed in to say, "but I mean ... It's Crosby ..." followed by someone else stating "but its also mackinnon. Who eventually will be a hall of famer."

So what does MacKinnon think of all this?

"Yeah, I don't blame him," MacKinnon said with a smile. "It's Sidney Crosby! He's an icon! A Canadian icon! I get it. I'm not like a household name. I know that, and that's OK. It's just funny to me. I'm not offended. Justin seemed like a nice guy."

i know in my heart that britin watched fellow travelers and almost couldn’t finish it because they saw themselves so much in hawk and tim (especially brian w/ hawk) that it was practically painful for them to watch. it’s the first time justin ever sees brian cry over something they watch. they swing wildly back and forth between horny and bawling, as anyone does watching that show. i just know that the whole liberty ave family watched it and the group chat was insane for the 8 weeks it was on air. ben is almost in tears from the sheer genius of the writing and vows to send ron nyswaner a fruit basket.

i also know they watched rwrb together because justin insisted, shutting down brian’s spiel about how romcoms are dumb and shallow, because justin likes listening to audiobooks while he paints and one of those had been rwrb, and he’d LOVED IT, but of course knew he couldn’t sell brian kinney on reading a romcom. so of course he was thrilled when a film came out that he could force brian to watch on a night it was his turn to pick. brian, of course, fucking loves it, thinks it’s goofy and sweet, drools over TZP and nick the whole time, and justin is just like. i told you so, curmudgeon.

Never steal from women

I've been wanting to make this post since the tourney where it happened. I was going to wait for the person involved to leave the server or something before posting it but I've been DYING to talk about this story, it's so good. So you're getting it now.

So, regarding Kirby Fighters 2, every February 3rd (in reference to the finale of Persona 5 Royal) for the past couple years, I've run a KF2 event if I'm able. Last year it was the first low tiers tourney, but this year I decided to have a normal tourney...

...with the insane marketing gimmick of calling it Jay Eazy's Kirbification

To be honest, February 3rd kinda snuck up on me this year. University's been fucking me up, to be fair. But one day, this rando comes into the server and asks when the next tourney is.

No one had picked up on the Feb. 3rd thing yet, but I dropped a few hints to it here and there, like the intro music for last year and the graphic for this year. But this reminded me to get off my ass and run the Feb. 3rd bracket. Remember FreeStickman, he'll be important in this story.

One day, before the tourney, Stickman comes into general to argue for the legality of Dried Up Sea...using AI. This gave him a reputation of a chatbot that, like Mimikool before him, could not POSSIBLY be shaken off. As you'd expect, his argument was meaningless, weightless, passionless, and a joke.

But it was pretty funny.

So you have Stickman in the tourney, seeded last, in the same bracket as all stars like Schmeedor, AV, Claire, KirbybiM, Justinian, and, to everyone's surprise, Dougsauce! All things considered, it was a pretty good tourney if you played normally. Thanks Jay Eazy.

So my first few sets roll around, I beat Panini then get stomped by AV. Stickman gets destroyed by Claire and that puts me against him in the bracket. Then I get this DM from Kyochan.

Kyo had been gassing up Stickman all day, and for good reason: It was funny. I am not a fan of Stickman, but I like Kyo more than I don't like Stickman, so I go Bandana Dee and pretend to fight back. Stickman ends up "winning" the set 3-2, and they go onto fight Schmeedor.

So why did I throw? There's a few reasons actually. Firstly, I already knew Schmee could beat me. I also found a way to turn it into what I thought would be a good narritive moment...but no one paid attention to that. So Stickman plays Fighter Kirby, but can't do a quarter circle consistently, in the whole set he threw out about 6 input hadokens, which he only started doing after I TOLD HIM that was an option. If you remember the SOFG 2021 +R bracket, the only reason I was able to beat Winters was because of coaching Theo gave me. So I thought it'd be fitting to have that come back around.

So Stickman goes onto fight Schmeedor, and I'm not Schmeedor, so I can't tell you why, but she ALSO agreed to throw to Stickman. Likely in the same way I did, controlling the set to go to game 5. Special mention to Stickman saying he'd flip a coin to decide who gets to ban first and send the video. If you hate competitive integrity this is absolutely the tourney for you.

So Schmee goes on to fight Stickman and loses, and to the surprise of me and Kyo, Justin is sent to losers bracket by Claire. Justin does actually have a bit of honour unlike us 3 goobers so it was much less likely to get him to throw. He later mentioned on his stream about not playing to win and that there was no point in playing if you weren't playing to win. On his stream, he said "what would i be doing? playing to lose? fuck that"

But that didn't stop Kyo from trying.

So Justin stomps the "rawest Fighter he's ever seen" (he didn't use hadoken) in a set that isn't really close and Stickman gets really upset about it. Bro wins 2 rigged sets and let it get to his head. Though I guess he didn't know they were rigged.

Eventually, AV also learns that Stickman is a fraud and is devastated. I'm not sure who else found out. I did also make a pretty good graphic for Jay Eazy's Kirbification, check it out!

So we played to lose, inflated a chatbot's ego, and still had a great time. What happened to Stickman was much more interesting than what would have happened if the tourney just played out normally, much like Happy Chaos's goal of making life as interesting as possible for humanity. Though tbh, looking at this graphic again, I don't really like how there's some character overlap...let me fix that...

Steddie brain rot with some anti Tommy

So maybe I'm rewatching the original US QAF and maybe I'm thinking about that scene with Justin and Chris Hobbs on Liberty Ave.

Hawkins gay scene in the mid-1980s was nothing to write home about, but if you knew where to look, it was there. It was a block of their own, where the businesses were supportive, and the houses were all owned by the queers. Many people saw it as the bad part of the town, but for those who knew, it was a sanctuary. There had an unspoken agreement, they don't out anyone who doesn't want to be outed. There in thier space everyone was free to be themselves.

There was of course, the Hideout, a little dive bar who's clientele was definitely not straight. There was a convenient store next to it who's workers didn't think twice when two guys would come stumbling in, arms wrapped around each other, looking for condoms. In fact they hung information posters up, reminding people that condoms and safe sax wasn't just to prevent pregnancy. They were advocating for themselves, each other when the local government(or national) had failed to do so. There was a little shop, advertising 18+ that sold things that would have Regan yuppies and the moral majority raising thier nose and clutching thier pearls. But it was a place that accepted the queer community.

Finally, there was Diane's diner across from there, a 24 hour restaurant that has been a place of solace for the folks that usually have to hide. It's also a place where the local AIDs coalition meets to coordinate meal delivery for those in Hawkins and the surrounding small towns who cannot leave thier house, too sick. Many of them don't even have family of thier own to take care of them. Everyone from the Party, both older teens and the teens still is high school often went to these, volunteering to make food, and Steve promising to drive it wherever it needs to go.

But tonight Steve, Eddie, Robin, Nancy, Jonathan, and Argylewere here to hang out at the Hideout. Corroded Coffin wasn't playing but they wanted to get out, be themselves. They wanted to drink, and dance, and not have to pretend for one night.

They walked as a group out of the bar, all holding onto each other. Liquid courage helping them put down thier inhibitions. Jonathan holding Argyle close by the waist, Nancy letting Robin wrap her arm around her shoulders while she slides her hand into Robin's back pocket, and Eddie pulling Steve under his arm, forgetting the meaning of personal space.

They let themselves be free here. Even their clothes were a little louder, allowing themselves to dress more butch, dress more feminine, dress gaudy, dress slutty, just dress how they like. Robin wore a dress shirt and a loose tie, contrasting the tight pants and loud makeup, Nancy wore a sleeveless, fitted button down, cut to show off her torso and high waisted denim shorts and a belt. Argyle wore his regular clothes, already loud enough, but loved that Jonathan was wearing his torn Clash shirt held together with safety pins, and tight leather pants and heavy boots. Finally, Eddie, like Argyle usually dresses loud enough, but opting to pair his black jeans with a cropped Metallica shirt this time, showing off the little tattoo low on his stomach, just above his groan that says Steve, having Gareth stick and poke it on him in his living room 3 weeks before. He wore a black hankie in his left pocket. But Steve, the polo princess himself, was the most shocking change. He wore short black shorts with a cropped mesh top, he had mid calf socks on and tennis shoes. He even wore eyeliner and strawberry lip gloss(his favorite since the summer he worked at Scoops.) Of course he wore a matching hankie but in his right pocket, loving being put on display, being able to share that he's with Eddie.

They are all laughing and having fun, when suddenly Steve stops in his tracks, causing Eddie and the other's to stop too. "What is it baby?" Eddie whispers.

"Look." He points with his head getting them all to look over at the group of people coming from the other direction towards the bar. People didn't come down here unless they were queer, and this group had no right being their. It was Tommy, with his arm wrapped around Carol, a couple of the other keg boys Steve used to hang out with, and thier girlfriends. All of these people he has heard torment queer (or suspected queer) kids in high school even if he wasn't out yet(though Tommy knew) "Why are they here?!" He is pissed.

Robin grabs his shoulder softly, "It's fine, Steve. How about we just go home?" Steve looks back at her incredulously. Jonathan is nodding, agreement in his face. They both look nervous. Steve guesses that people like Robin and Jonathan didn't necessarily have the best experience in High school having to deal with people like Tommy...like him. And he wants to fix that.

"They have no right to be here." He says anger still in his voice. Eddie pulls him closer, kissing his cheek. "Stevie, what do you wanna do?"

"Just give me a moment..." He holds up a finger, before pulling away. They all watch as he walks up to the other group. The beer and the couple shots of vodka making him braver.

"Harrington?" Tommy asks, almost laughing. "What the fuck are you wearing? God, I knew you would eventually fuckin lose it and come out as fucking fairy." The rest of Steve's group coming up behind him, he wishes they wouldn't have since now they are going to get wrapped up in this. A few people walk the streets on either side of them, coming and going from the bar.

"What are you doing down here, Tommy?" Steve spits, ignoring the previous comments.

Tommy steps closer, Carol under his arm. "You know, checking out the freaks." He sneers.

Steve leans closer "Down here, you're the freak." He grins, matching the ugly sneer on Tommy's face.

"What did you call me, faggot?" He pushes closer getting to close to Steve. Hearing and seeing this, Eddie walks closer, stepping between the two men. But Steve barely notices. Instead he pulls away, turning to the crowd forming around them

"Hey excuse me. Ugh this is Tommy Hagan. He just called me a faggot." There were a few gasps, with Robin smiling at him as the other's in his group looking dumbfounded. Tommy's group was equally as confused.

"Tommy doesn't like faggots. Or.." a big smile forms across his face. "Maybe he likes them more than he thinks."

"Shut up, Harrington." Tommy says behind gritted teeth.

Steve just smirks and finishes. "He let me suck his cock. The faggot gave Tommy Hagan a blow job." Steve leans back in his face, past Eddie. "And he loved it."

He is referring to a time sophomore when Steve blew him after school in the locker room. Steve was just realizing he was bi, and they wanted to do it. But Tommy never wanted to talk about it again after it, even if Steve had made him cum moaning his name, too ashamed, gaslit Steve into believing for years it was just him, that Tommy didn't really like it.

Tommy is shaking with anger as his friends look at him. With the growing crowd, he knew he couldn’t fight Steve here. So he shoves his finger in Steve’s chest and says "You are so fucking dead, Harrington." Before turning around storming off.

His friends gather around him, so fucling proud of him, pulling him into hugs. Eddie wraps his arms around Steve’s waist from behind, pulling him close and kissing his cheek. "You go, baby girl."

And Steve can't help but glow, walking to his Beemer, clinging to his friends. He knows tomorrow when this gets out, his life will be hell but for tonight, he's happy.

we agreed on indra just keeping her main to electric bat. its simple and hits HARD and she doesn't have to deal with any side effects because its just an electric bat.

secondary is cool jester though because she likes the elegant strides that it has over the other jesters. impervious to cold as well, and when weilding icicles the size of people (or i guess in this situation, formies) she can have a deadly precision with her aim.

hammond's main easily megagram hammer. she swings that huge thing around with GUSTO. slams the ground and swats the debris like its a game to bash bots. she's having a great time.

her secondary we couldn't really decide for a sec but edgy is the final verdict. good mobility when she's trying to maneuver to better areas to then switch back to megagram and really wreak havoc but Also. because she thinks edgy jester is Really Cool. let's be real she's a huge nerd.

athetos main and secondary are archer and mage respectively. stuff more ranged, he's not getting up close and personal at his age. plus he's the tube man. ranged is all he's got.

"PEREGRINE PROJECT"

Born on a family farm in upstate New York, Justin Suarez, aka Aerosol Kingdom, has more than 20 years experience in both fine art and large scale murals. Suarez also works as a licensed bird handler at Wild Wings Animal Sanctuary near Rochester, NY and says the Peregrine Falcon once nested in the midwest but was wiped out by DDT usage by the 1960s. In 2019 Suarez had a solo show at Chicago Truborn Gallery in West Town, and painted this tribute to the work of the Chicago Peregrine Program, founded in 1985 to help reestablish Peregrines in the midwest.
