Backstory

Devon was raised at Waystation 001 on the East Coast of the United States. He was raised by his parents, Maeve and Gideon Murphy, alongside his sister Natalie. When he was 7, his parents took in an orphaned werewolf hybrid named Ryan, who was raised alongside him as well. The two are best friends.

He grew up in a strange mixture of regular public school and magical side-jobs. He regularly traveled with his family to other Waystations across the globe and is familiar with the network and most of the people in charge. He knows a few languages, but speaks English most fluently. He has plenty of chores at the Waystation, late-night feedings, cleaning spaces, and keeping up with his own laundry as well.

His father died when he was 12 years old as a result of a containment breach at the Waystation. A creature called a Vulegrim, whom Gideon was trying to treat psychologically after it was found abused and abandoned, broke out of its holding cell. Gideon didn't want anyone to hurt the creature and was convinced he could calm them down without incident. He was wrong.

In season 1, Devon becomes obsessed with researching Avalon and his mother's exile. He is frustrated by her unwillingness to share and feels like Avalon might be the place he truly belongs, not Earth. What starts as a healthy curiosity quickly descends into a dangerous obsession throughout the season. This leads to tension with the other main characters, who can see that it's not good for him.

He is having strange dreams about Avalon, and he feels like someone is reaching out to him from the other side. He is convinced that if he can find out more information, his dreams will make more sense. At the end of the season, however, he realizes that it's his own latent power awakening, dreamwalking, and he's the one reaching out to someone in Avalon from Earth.

From his creation in 2011, Damas went through the most changes in personality, with his core looks and color scheme remaining nearly the same. He went from the jerk with a hidden heart of gold to a mix of a total book nerd who studies for fun, and a flirt that scores dates every other week. As much of a smooth talker that he is, deep down he’s got a few inner demons he needs to confront. Still very much a good guy, though. Both him and Avalon have known each other since childhood and have been best friends ever since. Some have joked that the two secretly harbor feelings for one another, but that remains to be seen.

Avalon Show Bible: Series Synopsis

Short Synopsis

After being banished from the utopian realm of Avalon, Maeve, an immortal, has spent the last century building Waystations across the globe. Waystations are safe havens for supernatural outcasts hiding on Earth; some were banished like Maeve, while others were born on Earth. Now settled at Waystation 001, located in the fictional East Coast city of [city name], her son Devon juggles high school, weekend monster hunting trips, and the overwhelming legacy of his mother, who refuses to answer any question he has about the mysterious realm of Avalon. Tension between them continues to rise as he does his own research and becomes more obsessed with Avalon, feeling like someone from the other side is trying to reach out to him through his dreams.

Long Synopsis

Avalon follows sixteen-year-old Devon Murphy, a sarcastic and restless high school junior who lives at Waystation 001, which most people in the city think is a shelter or rehab facility. In reality, it's one of many such "Waystations" throughout the globe; they are indeed shelters, but for supernatural creatures, cryptids, and magical misfits who need help surviving in a world that's stopped believing in them. The Waystations were built by his mother, Maeve, an immortal, enigmatic, and protective woman with a secret past. The Waystations have been her life's work and passion project for the past century, after she was cast out of Avalon, a hidden utopia tied to Celtic myth that exists, unseen, alongside Earth.

Devon's life is a mixture of mundane and magical. He attends high school, dodging his studies and bullies by day, and helping his mother hunt or shelter monsters by night. Also living at the Waystation are Andy, his genius best friend and werewolf hybrid, and Natalie, his sharp-tongued and "shoot first" older sister, who works full-time for the Waystation. Although Devon has grown up surrounded by magic and the mysterious, his mother has always downplayed their family's connection to Avalon. He has questions that she won't answer, and he's not satisfied by half-truths anymore.

The series largely follows a "monster-of-the-week" format, with a variety of folklore-inspired creatures like werewolves, kelpies, sirens, and banshees that come through the Waystation system or cause trouble in the city. Some episodes center on high school and Devon's academic life, highlighting his growing sense of alienation and "otherness". Some episodes center on the Waystation, his chores, and "field trips". These creature encounters force Devon to focus on his identity, drawing out his empathy, fears, and his longing for a purpose.

In the first season, Devon begins secretly researching Avalon, a world his mother wants to convince him isn't relevant to him. Along the way, we learn that Maeve is not fully human; she's half Aos Si, the ruling class of Avalon, and that Devon himself may carry a dormant power. The rift between them grows as she continues to mislead him and make decisions he disagrees with or doesn't understand. Devon begins to have vivid dreams that may not be dreams at all, of someone from Avalon calling out to him, furthering his obsession.

The first season ends with Devon uncovering a buried truth about Maeve's exile, and his dreamwalking, which he previously dismissed as nightmares, allows him to see a glimpse into Avalon itself, half utopia and half in ruin. The episode ends with Devon facing the first major choice he must make on his own: does he double down on the life his mother has created for him or risk everything to reach the one she's trying to forget?

Devon's questions about Avalon and his mother's past continue to push him further into obsession and forging his own identity.

Maeve struggles with losing control over her carefully curated empire and her children.

Natalie tries to carve her own path while trying to play peacemaker between everyone else.

Andy searches for belonging in his role as a hybrid while also sorting out his growing feelings for Devon.

Zane, Natalie's ex-highschool-sweetheart and rookie cop, investigates the Waystation, unknowingly inching closer to the truth.

In terms of development, Helia changed the most in term of personality. She started off as an air-headed ditz who ultimately meant well, and evolved into an arrogant and spoiled brat only looking for self gain. She’s meant to represent being on the side of good, but with lousy intentions. She puts value in money above all else and doesn’t care who she has to trample in order to get her way. The bitch was granted powers based on empathy so that she could learn to be a better person, but pretty much squandered that chance. Helia never really learns her lesson thanks to her benefiting from a very corrupt system that ensures whatever punishments she gets are reduced or outright waived...until Val comes along.

Maniek (old name was Manik) was one of my favorites in the creation stage back in late 2011, mostly in part to not exactly knowing what I wanted him to look like at the time. Every other time I redrew him, he had a different look. His current design stuck back around 2-3 years ago. He’s meant to invoke a space demon look, and back then was meant to be a type of Incubus. There’s more to him beneath the surface, but that’s a secret about himself he’ll only reveal to someone he can deeply trust with his life.

Avalon was among the many characters first created back in 2011 and was part of the group that underwent the most physical designs, while his color palette remained the same. At the core, I designed him with the intent to be a friendly face for Val to interact with once she joined Prism, an ancient intergalactic organization, and being the first Earthling in thousands of years to do so. Currently in-story, it’s established from the get-go that the Galaxies and the Realms (Home of the Mages and all Magic) have much animosity between them. Avalon would rather look past ancient grudges and judge people based on their character.

The lavender-like areas used to be bright blue to give off a glowing look, but I much prefer these current colors. Easily one of my favorite drawings to date. The “blindfold” is actually a simple concealment spell so that others can’t see hir eyes, so to everyone else it appears as a blindfold. She can see just fine. I plan on giving hir a mask at some point but I’ve yet to design it.

Val is the odd one out in Prism, as not only is she the first Earthling in nearly 12,000 years to set foot there, but she’s also a practitioner of Magic, both of which are extremely looked down upon by Prism and the Galaxies as a whole. They view all forms of Magic as corrupt and evil, and have murdered countless innocent beings in the past over it. 

Val took a huge risk in joining hir kind’s biggest enemy, and knows the only reason she isn’t being killed on sight is because it would initiate a massive war the Galaxies know they wouldn’t win. By intergalactic law, hir own existence is a terrible crime only punishable by death. She has no shame in hir heritage and refuses to wear Prism’s symbol as a sign of defiance. 

She’s there with only one goal in mind: to seek answers and gain closure she and hir family had been denied everywhere else.

Next to Philly, Anniya underwent the most physical changes in design from the beginning up until a year or two ago. She went from a shy, anxiety-ridden ball of nerves to a more well-rounded individual. For Anniya I wanted to try and tell her story through her appearance. In contrast to her bright colors, her wings are significantly darker and torn in a few areas. They represent a tragic loss she suffered a few years ago and the trauma that still lingers beneath the surface.

This fellow is Tereon. Much like Philly, he himself went through several physical changes from the time of his creation to last year, which is when I reached his current look. At one point he had four arms but I didn’t feel they suited him anymore, plus it was a pain in the ass to draw lol Tereon is the friend who gives great advice and some of the best hugs. I’ve had him as the team chef as well as the one who throws the best parties, but over time I saw how often those tropes were applied to chubby guys in most media so I dropped those as well. This time around, I made sure to give him more traits so that he’d have much more depth that will be seen as the story goes along.

Maram has a rather interesting development. Back in 2011 she was something of a blank slate in the beginning, and over time I made her into the cool honorary big sis type. However as of halfway last year, I changed things up a bit further. Maram had a gothic lolita look to her for the sake of drawing something different, but this time around it serves a bigger purpose. Along with that, she’s also meant to invoke a doll-like type of look. She remains a role model, while also taking on a more antagonistic role in the story due to her opposition of Val, believing hir to be an enforcer of chaos and evil.
