Agriculture - Agriculture Well here it is! The long awaited first release from the LA based black metal project Agriculture. Agriculture has been building up steam from pre-release reviews and commendations from metal blogs, critics, magazines, the whole lot. This album, at least in my circles, had a lot of hype. Even had a whole meme associated with the band: "I love the spiritual sound of ecstatic black metal by the band Agriculture" and it's pretty good! First off, a lot of black metal fans will shit on anything blackgaze-esc. Anything that even has the smallest whiff of Deafheaven or Liturgy is considered "Not Kvlt" or "poser shit" and frankly a lot of those people think that way because they're more invested in the aesthetic of music, how it makes them look to others, how it makes them feel, then they are about pushing forward the genre. Listening to the same four Norwegian black metal bands from the 90's isn't KVLT. Listening to endless repeats of the same tired BM tropes just reminds me of a Satanic version of Greta Van Fleet, and that is an ATROCIOUS thing to be similar to. Not too mention, all too often, these "TRUE BLACK METAL KVLT BANDS" are just Nazi Black Metal. From Burzum to Deathspell Omega. It's just Nazi shit. Agriculture on the other hand really dives deep into the blackgaze genre. Really pushing against what people expect when they turn on a black metal album. There is an interlude that is just a man singing over guitars. There are trumpet and jazz-esc sections. I mean there's still a shit ton of tremelo picking and high pitched screaming but it's black metal you know. There are definitely moments where it all works and it all felt so incredibly epic. Those emotional highs that I got listening to Liturgy or Deafheaven, but, at least on the first listen, I came away thinking "Yup. Kinda what I thought it would be." Not that that's a bad thing just, I wasn't blown away. The instrumentation was good, the singing was good, just... maybe it just didn't click for me. I'm excited to give it another listen and see if maybe I'll pick up on more nuances in a different context or mood. If so maybe I'll revisit my thoughts. But for now I think it's fine. If you really like this kinda music you'll absolutely love this, but for me, I'll probably just listen to some more liturgy.

Update on my journey of trying to find music that hit similar to will wood/and the tapeworms because my brain is very picky and doesnt like a lot of music!!!!!
when i started looking for recs the first artists i tried were tally hall and lemon demon (though i kinda like both and know why people associate them together, theyre not similar vibes wise for me) + charlies inferno, which i love, but when i tried more that handsome devils music it didnt feel the same as this one
Then i tried ajj, rare americans and oingo boingo. Theyre also not similar but also quite enjoyable to me, especially ajj’s terrifyer and most oingo boingo songs, as theyre all alike, so if you enjoy one youll probably like more
Then i tried exploring more with the evil-antagonist-cabaret vibes. I found kabaret sybarit and a verbal equinox (yes theres also will wood …….. but listen…….) which led to the dresden dolls and amanda palmer in general
LATER I GOT ENLIGHTENED!!!!!!!! I realized the thing i enjoy the most about will woods music is the folk aspect (ESPECIALLY THE KLEZMER VIBES!!!!!!) in will woods songs theres also a saxophone that matches perfectly with it. This lend to some more artists like golem, or rokiczanka (that i already knew, but my dad said the clarinet? in wyszlabym za dziada reminds him of that saxophone in wwatt) knowing that i tried more slavic folk (which i didnt really like lmao)(besides witcher 3 soundtrack, i love it)
And after some more digging today i tried the avant garde genre. So far i think diablo swing orchestra is cool and i have to listen to some more music from them
Its still not the same and exactly what im looking for, but i feel like im getting so much closer!!!!! Now i know what will wood meant when he said he wants his music to be as original as he can. I find elements of his songs i like scattered in so many different genres, and now whats left for me is find something that combines them, like a modern klezmer and punk/rock combination, or more cabaret like songs that are more energetic.
Its a long ass rant and its so oddly specific that i dont have any hope that people would relate to my musical problems. Not complaining tho!!! The journey of finding and listening to so much unique artists helps me see what i enjoy and what dont. Also i love using tumblr as a diary. End of rant, i hope i wont find it cringe later

All copies will be personally hand-numbered by me and some will even be stained with my own blood too. Please message me to let me know if you want one while supplies still last. Inspired by the cult Horror movie Blood Stalkers (1976) as well as artists: The Cherry Point, Moth Drakula, Hive Mind, The Rita, John Wiese, Black Sand Desert, Aaron Dilloway, Romance, Impregnable, Oscillating Innards, Mutant Ape, Privy Seals, Dead Machines, Pete Swanson, Yellow Swans, Nkondi, Goat, Pedestrian Deposit, Sewer Election, & Prurient. Today’s compilation:
Smack My Crack 1987 Avantgarde / Spoken Word Poetry / Experimental / Industrial / Leftfield / Alternative Rock
Some really heavy hitters from the 80s on this compilation that was put out by famed New York poet and Andy Warhol pal John Giorno's label, Giorno Poetry Systems. You've got the Butthole Surfers, Einstürzende Neubauten, William S. Burroughs, Swans, Tom Waits, Chris Stein, Nick Cave, Hüsker Dü, David Johansen, and Cabaret Voltaire. It's basically where a who's who of avantgarde, industrial, spoken word poetry, and the outer fringes of alternarock all come to meet in the late 80s. Sounds interesting 🤔.
But it's not; at least not to me. Whoever derives genuine enjoyment from an album like this exists on a wavelength that's far, far away from my own. And I take a whole lot of pride in my pretty damn eclectic taste in music, but so much of this just doesn't appeal to me in any way, shape, or form. The first half is way too subversive and out there and the second half pumps in some stuff that's just a bit too campy to be fun. And Tom Waits and Nick Cave don't even sing; they just perform a poem each. Sure, I've got nothing against poetry, but I wanted to hear those boys sing some poetic lyrics, not do spoken word. Disappointing.
To me, the best song on here is an instrumental synthesizer piece from Chris Stein (of Blondie fame) that has this vaguely eastern sound to it, but the lead melody gets a little too repetitive. It's definitely the cheeriest, most normal song on the comp though, and it's therefore also simultaneously the most unique song of this set.
And runner-up goes to Hüsker Dü's "Won't Change." It's got a cool American underground-noisy hardcore punk sound to it, and it's the only punk song on this album, but the fact that it was apparently an outtake from their 1983 album Metal Circus should probably tell you that it's definitely not among their best material.
An album that's very much not for me, but if you wanna hear some really strange late 80s shit, you now know where to look.
No highlights.

Jute Gyte - Ship of Theseus
Holy fucking SHIIIIIT. Jute Gyte has to be one of if not my favorite solo-black metal project, black metal, project, fucking whatever cool experimental stuff he does I love. The main thing that Adam Kalmbach's project Jute Gyte is known for is its use of Microtonal Music. If you don't know, western music is generally split (super simplifying here) into half tones. So you have A and then A Sharp and then B, C, then C sharp, D, D sharp. So it progresses in these half steps. In Middle eastern Music and south asian music, and many other cultures outside of the western school of music theory. There are many many more. So there could be a note between d sharp and E that is just like D sharp sharp, or maybe D.78 or D.92 depending on how specific. Essentially Jute Gyte is playing notes, chords, and scales that do not exist within western music canon. If you've never listened to music outside of that space (which includes everything from Justin Bieber to Darkthrone to WuTang to Mozart to Elvis to Miles Davis to Taylor Swift) then this is going to sound insane to you. Even out of tune, it isn't. This is just that cool ass experimental music. This whole album, once you get into the sound he's going for, is such a slow and particular burn filled with incredibly dense riffs and noise orchestration. The guitars prick and and pop almost sounding like metallic crashes or high pitched banging to fit in with the noisey sampling and electronic soundscape. They float between almost recognizable sounds by incorporating notes that aren't within the western canon but are a similar space apart between familiar chords / scales (for instance playing in D.75 Major scale). This playing with familiarity makes everything feel uncanny and uneasy, yet still beautiful. Each song has it's low quieter moments that build into epic, high intensity climaxes that are so dense and well constructed that even after a few listens there will still be details, notes and references. An absolute fucking experience. Jute Gyte is one of the best to be making music right now.
