✧ 1 ✧
You launch up from bed, throwing your blanket off and running to your bathroom. Slamming your knees against the hard ground you throw up in the toilet.
You cough until your lungs hurt, tears streaming down your face. Knuckles white from holding on to the bathtub and cabinet nearby. Your throat burns as you cough, slowly the coughing fit fades. Flushing the mess, you grab a prepared water bottle to your right. Drinking down the whole thing.
You knew this would happen, these nightmares have been getting more consistent. More detailed.
More real.
You sigh and lean back on the wall, your bathroom is pitch black and the floor cold to the touch. You feel as if your skin is infested with something crawling inside. You're uncomfortable beyond measure, waking up from a nightmare. Throwing up your guts, surrounded by pure darkness which reminds you of…
Your turn on the lights.
The nightmares have been a nuisance. It has been going on for a long while now, as least a couple of months.
Though this one was different from the rest, you actually saw the person the haunting voice belongs to.
In previous dreams you always heard him saying the same thing over and over. That small sly smirk on his face as if he won, as if he knew something you didn't. Knew that you were nothing compared to him, that you were wrong.
Once when you were on a red ship. Traveling to crashing waves with a small figure, you still remember his large smile.
Flying on a bright red bird throughout the clouds. Clinging onto the back of someone, his light brown hair blowing in the breeze.
At a little ranch the sun kissing your skin. A muscular man in the distance laughing as you were playing with kids.
A lush flower field. Surrounded by glowing floating dots, as the person beside you made light within his hands.
On a lonely island. Where you sat side by side a still figure on the sandy beach, him staring at the clouds.
Inside a smith’s workshop. Listening to the clanging of metal, watching someone hard at work.
A wasted battlefield of war. Zipping through the fighting of soldiers, looking at someone with a navy blue scarf.
Lastly, a hill in a lonely field with a singular tree. Sitting next to a young man playing a lovely tune with his instrument.
Each dream was blurry but as more and more dreams occurred the clearer it would become, but the haunting voice would stay the same repeating each word in every dream. Taunting you, belittling you, every single time.
Each time he would begin to speak is when the mysterious figure in your dreams would ask if you would always stay by their side, and your reply the same every time.
The events that followed never changed once: that awful grey being with the bloody red eyes, the dark place that consumes the land and that monster lurking in the water.
It always ends the same… that beast opening its mouth, you falling in… and…
You swallow, best not to think about for now.
Getting up from the cold floor you make it back to your bedroom looking at your phone. It's time to get ready anyways, your first class starts soon. Glancing outside your window, the clouds are starting to turn grey. WIth a quick flash of light it starts to pour down, just great. A storm, what a joke.
Finishing getting ready and picking up your backpack you look at your desktop where your Nintendo Switch is lying, you recently beat Breath of the Wild. Collecting all those korok seeds has been nothing but a pain, though exploring places you haven't been before in your first run has been fun…but
Your face scrunches up, now thinking about it. The trail you were taking in your dream was very similar to the path going to Hateno Village.
If you really thought about it. Each area in your nightmares including that person and that abyss, all of it seemed too familiar.
You sigh and swing your backpack over your shoulder, maybe you're just playing too many video games.
~~~
Students run as fast as they could to make it in the campus and avoid the down pour, you one of those students. Making it inside the campus and shaking off a bit of the water, you check to make sure the damage to your backpack isn't too severe. Satisfied with it’s state, you start to head to your first class of the day, history.
The class is dimmed down a bit as the lights in the back have yet to be replaced, just were you're sitting. Taking your seat and getting everything ready for today’s lecture you wait for it to begin, pen in hand.
“Right class, glad most didn't decide they were suddenly sick today and call out because of this weather!”
That got a few tired laughs from a few students in the front, a small smile making it to your face. Maybe you should have actually called sick, having gone through that mess this morning. Well, you're here now anyways.
“Right, so for today we will be going over World War I, the involvement of the United Sates, and The League of Nations. Now! To begin-”
Your head is starting to fall, harshly placing it in your opposite hand, the other desperately trying to write down the lecture. You feel exhaustion creeping up behind you like awaiting a jump scare in a horror movie.
Shit, you're falling asleep!
Involuntarily, you feel your eyelids start to droop. You try to will them to stay open, but you feel yourself losing.Your eyelids shut. The professor's voice in the background, nothing but a few murmurs.
“ …- World War I...”
You're in a battleground, dead bodies and blood cover the grass. Swords and shields scattered about in the mess of corpses. You step forward just to stop when hear a crunch, looking down you see you stepped on the mangled finger of a soldier.
“...Just how many…”
You look up from the dead, standing right in front of you is a blonde in armor. His back turned to you, dressed in green garps and wielding a lightly glowing sword, covered in blood.
“....How many that I trained beside…”
His head facing upwards to the now clearing sky. God rays begin to peek through, revealing the countless bodies scattered. The ocean of blood which covers the lush green field.
It goes on for miles…
His shoulders begin to shake, from fear, from grief, you dont know.
You noticed his navy blue scarf blowing in the wind, the bottom dripping blood.
“HOW MANY MORE WILL BETRAY ME IN THIS WAR!!”
Your eyes burst open, you're starting to sweat. A fever creeping from your neck spreading through your body. An intense weight is placed on your chest, you feel like your lungs will collapse.
“... -When American soldiers-...”
Your eyes shut once again.
You hear the sound a pacing feet, opening your eyes you see a man in green walking back and forth. Tugging at his light brown hair which looked rather painful. His white short cape with blue design following behind him.
“I have to be perfect…”
You're in a closed off area with a few trees, stone underneath your feet. The wind is blowing harshly as if you're high in the sky. There's something large just a few feets way.
“They rely on me as a knight.”
You don't like that large figure, it feels looming, powerful, ancient. You cant see the details, just the slight color of cold grey stone and the outline of pressed together hands in front of it’s chest. You trail your eyes analyzing it as you get closer to its face, just to freeze and your breath halting.
…Its staring at you
“WHY AM I ALWAYS LATE!!”
Your body jolts forward, fuck you can’t see well. You try to make a sound but your throat feels like someone is choking you. Trying to get someone’s attention you try to reach out, but your body is too heavy.
Your eyes drift close.
“...-The League of Nations organization-...”
Your cheek is pressed against a cold floor, fighting against gravity you lift your head to see you're in a cave. A small fire is burning in front of you. A person in a bright blue shirt with a navy cloak and the hood on is sitting on a log in front of you.
“A whole group of people…”
His knee is bouncing with his hands gripping the fabric of his thighs. You can see just a bit of his lower face to see him biting his lip. A shaky chuckle passing through his lips.
“All of them with a life goal to kill me…”
You gasp and fall back as he rushes up from his seat. Kicking the log out of the cave, the hood falling off his head.
Blonde hair in a half ponytail is revealed to you, only for him to pull off the ponytail and tug at his hair from the back, again, it looks like it really hurts.
“IM NOT EVEN THE SAME PERSON AS BEFORE!!”
The fire begins to burn bright in front of you, your breathing is coming out as short and wheezy. Your head falls as you try to regain your breath. You hear footsteps making their way towards you. Lifting your head with as much force as you can, you see the three of them. Though their faces are blurry, you see them stop just in front of you.
You squint and try to remember. You've seen them before. You know them.
Why can't you remember.
Why can't you see his face?
You feel it though, deep inside your soul and gut. A feeling of familiarity with the feeling of Deja vu, like you've seen them before in a dream or they’re hidden away in a distant memory. Someone that you spent so much time with, shared so much memories with, that even after so many years pass and you don't communicate. Once you rekindle that connection, it's like you've never left each other. That relationship that can surpass any time and distance
YOU KNOW THEM!
…A Captain.
…A Knight.
…A Champion.
Your wheezing has gotten worse. At this point, you're not even sure if you're breathing air in. You hear their steps as they get closer, right in front of your quivering body. The world is closing in, getting darker, but a hand reaches under your chin to move it up.
Suddenly it’s warm, its calm.
Your fever has gone down and you take a deep breath in, gasping as you finally get air in your lungs.
Someone is stroking your cheek, a hand pushing the hair behind your ear, and another rubbing your back.
Looking up you see them three are crouched down, smiling and comforting you.
“Breathe.”
The blonde with the navy scarf is wiping your tears, his voice a low rumble. His gloves are rough, but you dont mind the feeling of the texture.
“Breathe…”
He slams your face in the ground, it’s turned to water. The other two are gone. You gasp and fight back, you feel the water entering your lungs. The burning pain of water going through your nose. Your head is pulled back by your hair.
…It’s him
The hideous grey skin differing from the dark abyss you now find yourself in. His dark clothes splattered with the only hints of color bearing red, blood. Though that can't even compare to his eyes.
His unblinking bright scarlet eyes stare into your very soul. The brightest red that you have ever seen the glow lighting the dark abyss and murky water. His face this motionless mask, not even a twitch of a muscle. He brings up his hand with his rough large palm covering your nose and mouth.
“Breathe.”
You cant…
The water is rising. Drowning you and him in the dark, as the water consumes his very being, his hand still covering your nose and mouth. You try to fight him, to go back to the surface and breathe. But he's stronger.
He's always stronger.
You see a scaled body swimming behind him in the murky water. It's swimming around. Just out of your view, only allowing its black body to appear for a mere second. It's waiting.
The scarlet eyed man finally smiles.
“Breathe.”
Someone is desperately shaking your shoulders yelling for someone else to go and get help. You see your professor standing above you. Slowly, the worry on his face begins to fade away, you're on the floor.
“Breathe, breathe. You passed out.”
Your body is shaking as you're frantically taking in each and every breath as if the next will suddenly be cut off, drowning you again in that dark abyss where that monster is waiting for you. The class bells rings.
~~~
You make it home and set your backpack on the couch.
After visiting the class nurse, she had come to the conclusion that you had passed out due to the lack of oxygen. The most concerning thing, however, is when the nurse left, you suddenly had a coughing fit. Running to the bathroom, you kept coughing.
Until murky water started dripping from your mouth.
The same water that you were drowning in.
You have decided to skip the rest of the day and go home after that. Leaning against your kitchen counter, you decide to drink slowly a clean glass of water to help with the aching pain in your throat. The storm outside had only gotten worse after your… episode and you're currently dripping on your kitchen floor.
After finishing the glass slowly, you put it in your kitchen sink. You'll deal with it tomorrow. Going to the bathroom, you grab some towels. Preparing to take a shower. The moment you turn it on, watching the water drip.
You feel the water in your lungs.
You rushed over and turned it off. Falling backwards and back slamming against the wall. You look at the towels and decide to just dry off. No shower today.
Putting on the most comfortable pj's you own, you go to bed and bundle up. Smiling softly at the smell of freshly clean sheets and warm extra blankets. A great comfort after today's events.
Though a irritated sigh does escape your lips. First it was the nightmares, now it was this weird episode you had during class. Seeing those three figures that you know for a fact you either met or seen before.
Turning to the side. You see your desk, your Nintendo Switch laying just on top. You know those three outfits, you've seen those outfits. And that grey man with the dark clothes and scarlet red eyes, you know for a fact who he is. But it doesn't make any sense. He's from a game.
Nothing about this makes any sense. Why are suddenly video game characters from your favorite childhood game attacking you in dreams? In nightmares? Even still, he's not even in the latest game that you're playing.
The most that you have is a skin of him, Dark Link.
Nothing about this makes any sense, you thought they were just nightmares. Your subconscious playing tricks on you, twisting your favorite game into something horrendous.
But after today….
After the drowning. Feeling your lungs collapsing, water being forced through your nose and mouth as you hiccup. Feeling it entered through your throat, the burning in your nose. And coughing up that water later.
You've never had very vivid dreams before, nothing that's ever felt real. But this passes beyond just feeling that it was real.
You coughed up evidence that it happened.
You feel your eyes begin to sting and hiccups force out of your throat. A few tears dripped down your eyes. All the stress and worry of these nightmares that now don't seem to be just nightmares. The exhaustion getting to you.
You fall asleep crying.
~~~
It's calm, it's quiet.
It's peaceful, it's warm.
Just like him.
Laughter wakes you up, slowly opening your eyes, you're in a bright green field. Soft laughter makes you turn to the right, there's a kid. With bright messy blonde hair and a bright blue shirt a white design on it.
“Hey sleepyhead!”
You stare at him, you… can't see him well. His face is blurry. But his smile shines through the blurs. You smile back at him as he takes your hand to stand up.
“We got to start heading out.”
“Why?”
He caresses your hand. You feel his calluses on his palm. You shouldn't feel that in a dream should you?
“Time to head back!”
“Head… back?”
He says nothing, just smiles and takes your hand starting to walk on a trail made of gold. You look only at him, trying to make sense of him. Trying to remember his face, why can't you see his face?
Music starts to play at the very end of the path, it's cheerful melody making you want to dance. You hear people laughing, you hear children yelling in joy. He smiles and starts to rush.
He begins to run as you hold on tight to his hand. The music and laughter gets louder and more inviting, but he's only getting faster. Your hand is starting to be slipping through. You look down at your hands in worry, but you spot something on his hand.
Was that…is that the Triforce…
Your hand finally slips through.
“Slow down!”
You hurry after the running figure. The wind blowing through your hair. You hear his laugh, you always loved his laugh.
“Come on! It's this way!”
He's running faster, his laughter is echoing through the trees. Since when were you in a forest?
“Please! Slow down!”
He's going faster, you can barely see him, the light that follows him is dimming. It's getting dark. You lose sight of the gold path.
“Please! I can't!”
It's getting cold, the trees make no noise. The wind has stopped blowing.
You hear water.
You hear what's moving in the water.
You can't see him
You freeze, it's pitch black. You hear nothing but your panic breathing. You remember his name, why now?
“... Link…?”
No answer.
You look around and see nothing,
The rippling in the water is getting louder, it's getting closer, it's right behind you.
You look behind to see the back of the scaly creature barely protruding out of water. It's not moving, it's just waiting, taunting.
You don't dare to move, don't dare to make a sound. Wondering if your silent breathing is enough to alert the monster.
"... ️S̴̨̛͇̺͇͕̟̘͎̗͖̙͍̭̞͇̒͆̀͝.... Ḩ̶̳̣̮̻̪̜͍̹̭͓͍̳̼̈́̅́̄̍̀͐́̊̽͌̊̂͂͠͝͝.... I̸̡̛̳͌̉͋͐͒̍.... M̴̨̦͓̰̌͆̉̃̄͆͜ͅ.....?"
His voice! You hear him!
Although you can't see him you can clearly hear his soft voice, though it sounds…different. As if he's the same person but a different version. He's calling for you, but not by your name. Although the name that he's calling you seems so familiar, so comforting. You know that name.
“... Link…”
The beast under the waves begins to move. The slight whisper alerting it. It now knows it's not just the two of you alone, it knows you can hear him.
It begins to circle you, taunting. As it goes in and out of the water slowly getting closer.
“️S̴̨̛͇̺͇͕̟̘͎̗͖̙͍̭̞͇̒͆̀͝ȟ̸̨̯̲̝̳͓͎̭͖͊̄̔̽̓̂̋̇̋̀̕̚͜..... I̸̡̛̳͌̉͋͐͒̍.m̶̥͇͈̣̏͑̿͑̃̈͛̕͠...... M̴̨̦͓̰̌͆̉̃̄͆͜ͅ... Ě̵̢̧̛̦̼̜̲͕͕͍̤̙͉͓́̅͒̽̍̐͋͜͝.. ŕ̶̛̰̱̈́̀́̑̿̾͛͂̈́͗̓̈́̒͘͝️....?"
His voice is getting clearer. It's getting closer and you look behind to see a slight faint golden light.
You pause and look at the patrolling beast under the water. It's waiting, wondering, daring you.
You have nowhere to go only to that warm golden light and to him. You now accepted the fact that this, this isn't a dream anymore. What can you do to run away from this monster? What choice do you have besides calling out to him?
You take a deep breath.
Close your eyes.
And scream
"LINK!!"
The monster under the waves charges up, grabs you with its jaws making sure not to puncture your delicate body and swallows you whole.
The shadow with piercing red eyes stares at the scene before him. A small chuckle leaving his lips as he slowly turns to the left of him, to a silent observer.
“They're still waiting. You failed, hero.”
~~~
Legend gasps awake launching from his bedroll; the others waking up around him. He runs to the nearby lake and proceeds to throw up the Champion's latest meal. The dark forest is silent as he coughs and shakes, the moon shining above witnessing the hero in his weakened state.
His throat burns as he coughs and cries. A comforting hand rubs his back and another helps to hold back his now faded pink hair. He finally stops and thanks Warrior for handing him over some water. He stands back up and takes a deep breath. Turning to the group of his fellow heroes.
Each of them stare in worry, Hyrule already with a healing potion in hand. The wind blows softly cooling down his heated cheeks.
Even after being forced to give up his latest meal by the group's designated chef, his eyes hold no discomfort nor does his body.
In fact, he appears more confident than ever. His eyes burned with determination.
“I know where they are now.”
Finally, after all these years, they finally have a clue on where to find you.

130. Recharging Together in Paradise 🌊
<Previous - Desktop Navigation - Next> <Previous - Mobile Navigation - Next >
Sulani welcomed Conrad and Lana with open arms.
Tumblr media
The weather was perfect—a soft breeze brushed through the air, carrying the fresh scent of saltwater.
The sky was a little cloudy, but the clouds had a gentle glow, as if the sun was peeking through.
The waves softly crashing on the shore made everything feel even more relaxing.
It was the kind of atmosphere that made them feel at ease.
Tumblr media
For Lana, the fresh sea air worked like a miracle.
For the first time in weeks, she could breathe deeply without that uncomfortable feeling in her stomach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The morning sickness, that had been so constant, was slowly fading. She took a deep breath with a smile spreading across her face.
“It’s amazing how much better I feel just being here,” she said softly, closing her eyes for a moment. “I think this place might be magical.”
Conrad, watching her, nodded in agreement.
“It’s what we both needed,” he said while breathed in deeply alongside Lana. “The last few months have been hard on you. I just want you to feel better.”
Lana gave him a playful glance.
“Well, I’ll admit, I don’t mind the idea of staying in paradise for a little while longer,” she teased, then paused. “I think I might actually be able to eat a proper meal tomorrow. I haven’t had a full breakfast in weeks.”
He chuckled, reaching for her hand. “If you’re able to keep it down, we can have whatever you want.”
It was such a simple conversation, but for them, it felt like a small victory.
Tumblr media
After a few days of rest, Lana's energy began to return. She no longer stayed in bed all day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In fact, she found herself walking along the beach with her feet sinking into the warm sand, and dipping her toes into the sea.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The water felt like a balm, washing away all the discomfort from earlier. The sun warmed her skin, and she felt light again.
Tumblr media
The doctor, that Nova made arrangements with, visited them daily.
She was thorough and calm, taking her time with Lana.
"You’re doing well, Lana. But don’t push yourself too much. Take it slow. You’re getting visibly stronger each day.”
Conrad gave a pointed glance in Lana’s direction.
“I’ll make sure she rests. But it’s hard to keep her still when she starts feeling better,” he said with a playful smirk on his face.
Lana laughed softly, looking up at him.
As the days passed, Lana’s mood began to shift too.
The exhaustion that had settled over her seemed to evaporate, replaced by a soft, lively energy.
Her smile became brighter, and her voice, once quiet and reserved, became filled with the chatter that Conrad always adored.
He couldn’t help but watch in awe as she blossomed before him.
Her spirit, which had been buried under the weight of sickness, returned in almost full force.
Tumblr media
“Look at you,” he said as she smiled brightly at him from across the table. “You’re a whole different person already.”
Lana laughed. “Mom was right, this place works its magic. I didn’t even know I was capable of this much energy until now. I think I could swim all the way out there and back—without getting tired!”
“Let’s not push it,” Conrad replied, raising an eyebrow. “But if you want to try, I’m sure I can find you a life vest.”
“Very funny,” she grinned. “I feel so much better, Conrad. It’s like… I’ve finally caught a break.”
He reached out, squeezing her hand. “I’m glad. I’ve missed seeing you this way.”
They spent the rest of their stay there in the laid-back rhythm of island life, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They would lounge on the beach together, reading children’s books, laughing over the silly characters, and imagining the kind of little one they were about to welcome into the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you think our son will have a favorite book?”
“I’m sure he will,” Conrad answered with a smile. “Maybe he’ll like adventure stories, just like you. You’ve always had a bit of a wild trait.”
Lana laughed. “Well, I’m hoping he has some of your calmness, too. Not that I mind him being a little chaotic, but… you know, it might be nice to have a quieter child.”
Conrad replied in a teasing tone. “I’m sure we’ll get a good mix of both of us. Chaos and calm, all wrapped up in one little bundle.”
Lana rolled her eyes. “Can’t wait for that.”
Tumblr media
There was a long pause before she asked quietly, “Do you think we’ll be good parents?”
Conrad’s face softened as he looked at her with full of love expression on his face. "I think we’ll be the best parents we can be. We don’t have to be perfect. We just have to be there for him. And we will be. Together.”
Lana smiled as she felt a wave of reassurance. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. We’ll figure it out. I know we will.”
Tumblr media
They both relaxed, allowed themselves to just be with their thoughts, no worries, no anxieties. The weight of responsibilities felt lighter here, in this moment, on this island.
They felt more connected than ever before—closer, stronger, ready for whatever was to come.

i have opinions about how we fanfiction for the internet, and i don't mean literary or aesthetic ones: i mean your experience of writing it!
this is just my markdown manifesto again:
there is no reason to tangle with google or microsoft for writing copy that will ultimately be rendered as HTML on ao3 and tumblr!! rich text editors are slow as hell on desktop and mobile, both in performance and how much time you waste formatting, which takes your hands from the keyboard whether physical or touchscreen. most users end up redoing that formatting entirely in their destination site's embedded rich text editor and inevitably miss things anyway!! google docs and microsoft word and their ilk were made for printed documents no matter how much they try to mutate to stay relevant—i'm side-eying google's "paste markdown" here, nevermind gemini and copilot!
commonmark markdown is quick and easy to learn. enable markdown on tumblr and all you have to do to is copy and paste (only on desktop, unfortunately). if you don't bother with headers or dividers, the most you have to do afterwards is add a "read more" cut. ao3 is less perfect; you might have to ctrl+R formatting marks for the plain text editor and annoyingly add forward slashes to end tags, but there's still explicit fidelity to the formatting you defined while writing that the clipboard cannot lose. yes, i know "paste with formatting" exists, but it's not a problem for me because I live like this. in markdown, your writing isn't tied to any website or service; it's really yours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that said, you still need a markdown editor, and there are several:
obsidian.md (windows/android/mac/iOS/linux): i used this for more than three years for grad school and writing. i still use its android app since i sync my notes with a git repo instead of the cloud. without paying for obsidian sync, you can keep your vault in your desktop icloud or google drive folder so you can access it from your phone. it's a great way to learn a version of markdown and get comfortable with just how lightweight and portable your drafts can be. this is a good fit if you've ever used and liked notion and want to focus on words
@ellipsus-writes (web app in open beta; no mobile app yet but the mobile site is functional): they don't market themselves as a markdown editor and clearly aim to replicate a gdocs/word-like, mouse-dependent formatting experience, but they support markdown! if you feel trapped by google because of file sync and being able to share docs privately, this is one of your best bets. i haven't tried this, but i think exporting your work from ellipsus as a .md file and then pasting it into tumblr is Great option
i haven't tried these extensively/recently but know they're out there:
simplenote (android/iOS/windows/macOS/linux): i used this forever ago and it looks like it's grown a lot!
bear (macOS/iOS only)
and another thing is: i think it's nice to use different programs for different parts of life. i use google docs for work and yes, using their awful markdown support, but it still makes a difference to write my fanfiction somewhere else (in the terminal, because i'm the most annoying person alive)!! compartmentalize beyond different accounts, don't let the bastards get you down
also i'm not gooning for a brand here i personally use neovim

my dads latest computing milestone is learning how to buy cheap garbage on temu.
he got some more awful surveillance cameras he expects me to make work. six of them for 29 dollars. they are wifi cameras but only seem to work with the app. there at least is a desktop version, so its not stuck on the phone, but unless you pay 49.95 a month for the cloud storage service they are still basically useless. the most horrifying part is that it still saves the last 24 hours on the cloud service whether you pay for it or not.
nmap tells me it is indeed just a tiny computer running linux. there is an open ftp port at port 21, but i don't know the password. there's also something at port 6789 but idk what that is. several udp ports as well.
I've done a bit of research, some people have had luck putting better firmware on similar cameras, but i haven't had any success yet.

Tumblr media
10/31/2024
For Halloween, the clouds are eating the sun.
Positive thing: I began rewatching my favorite J-Drama with a friend.
It's so nice to have extra free time at work to just watch shows with my friend. She seemed to enjoy it, and we have plans to binge the rest of it together this weekend so that'll be exciting.
Immediate tangent, but man do I have a headache. I was playing the Monster Hunter Wilds beta that came out to play test and it's so poorly optimized that the graphics (on my decent gaming desktop) came out really laggy and fuzzy. I pushed through it so I could at least get through a single monster fight, but it hurt my brain to look at. It's probably my vertigo. Either way, ouch. I'm going to try and mess with the settings some more tomorrow to see if I can get rid of whatever is making it look so awful - if I can't figure it out I'll just give up and play something that won't make me dizzy.
Tomorrow is my free day so maybe I'll go back out to a cafe or something and enjoy a matcha. I'm glad I can sleep in and hopefully get rid of this headache.

Amazon DCV 2024.0 Supports Ubuntu 24.04 LTS With Security
Tumblr media
NICE DCV is a different entity now. Along with improvements and bug fixes, NICE DCV is now known as Amazon DCV with the 2024.0 release.
The DCV protocol that powers Amazon Web Services(AWS) managed services like Amazon AppStream 2.0 and Amazon WorkSpaces is now regularly referred to by its new moniker.
What’s new with version 2024.0?
A number of improvements and updates are included in Amazon DCV 2024.0 for better usability, security, and performance. The most recent Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is now supported by the 2024.0 release, which also offers extended long-term support to ease system maintenance and the most recent security patches. Wayland support is incorporated into the DCV client on Ubuntu 24.04, which improves application isolation and graphical rendering efficiency. Furthermore, DCV 2024.0 now activates the QUIC UDP protocol by default, providing clients with optimal streaming performance. Additionally, when a remote user connects, the update adds the option to wipe the Linux host screen, blocking local access and interaction with the distant session.
What is Amazon DCV?
Customers may securely provide remote desktops and application streaming from any cloud or data center to any device, over a variety of network conditions, with Amazon DCV, a high-performance remote display protocol. Customers can run graphic-intensive programs remotely on EC2 instances and stream their user interface to less complex client PCs, doing away with the requirement for pricey dedicated workstations, thanks to Amazon DCV and Amazon EC2. Customers use Amazon DCV for their remote visualization needs across a wide spectrum of HPC workloads. Moreover, well-known services like Amazon Appstream 2.0, AWS Nimble Studio, and AWS RoboMaker use the Amazon DCV streaming protocol.
Advantages
Elevated Efficiency
You don’t have to pick between responsiveness and visual quality when using Amazon DCV. With no loss of image accuracy, it can respond to your apps almost instantly thanks to the bandwidth-adaptive streaming protocol.
Reduced Costs
Customers may run graphics-intensive apps remotely and avoid spending a lot of money on dedicated workstations or moving big volumes of data from the cloud to client PCs thanks to a very responsive streaming experience. It also allows several sessions to share a single GPU on Linux servers, which further reduces server infrastructure expenses for clients.
Adaptable Implementations
Service providers have access to a reliable and adaptable protocol for streaming apps that supports both on-premises and cloud usage thanks to browser-based access and cross-OS interoperability.
Entire Security
To protect customer data privacy, it sends pixels rather than geometry. To further guarantee the security of client data, it uses TLS protocol to secure end-user inputs as well as pixels.
Features
In addition to native clients for Windows, Linux, and MacOS and an HTML5 client for web browser access, it supports remote environments running both Windows and Linux. Multiple displays, 4K resolution, USB devices, multi-channel audio, smart cards, stylus/touch capabilities, and file redirection are all supported by native clients.
The lifecycle of it session may be easily created and managed programmatically across a fleet of servers with the help of DCV Session Manager. Developers can create personalized Amazon DCV web browser client applications with the help of the Amazon DCV web client SDK.
How to Install DCV on Amazon EC2?
Implement:
Sign up for an AWS account and activate it.
Open the AWS Management Console and log in.
Either download and install the relevant Amazon DCV server on your EC2 instance, or choose the proper Amazon DCV AMI from the Amazon Web Services  Marketplace, then create an AMI using your application stack.
After confirming that traffic on port 8443 is permitted by your security group’s inbound rules, deploy EC2 instances with the Amazon DCV server installed.
Link:
On your device, download and install the relevant Amazon DCV native client.
Use the web client or native Amazon DCV client to connect to your distant computer at https://:8443.
Stream:
Use AmazonDCV to stream your graphics apps across several devices.
Use cases
Visualization of 3D Graphics
HPC workloads are becoming more complicated and consuming enormous volumes of data in a variety of industrial verticals, including Oil & Gas, Life Sciences, and Design & Engineering. The streaming protocol offered by Amazon DCV makes it unnecessary to send output files to client devices and offers a seamless, bandwidth-efficient remote streaming experience for HPC 3D graphics.
Application Access via a Browser
The Web Client for Amazon DCV is compatible with all HTML5 browsers and offers a mobile device-portable streaming experience. By removing the need to manage native clients without sacrificing streaming speed, the Web Client significantly lessens the operational pressure on IT departments. With the Amazon DCV Web Client SDK, you can create your own DCV Web Client.
Personalized Remote Apps
The simplicity with which it offers streaming protocol integration might be advantageous for custom remote applications and managed services. With native clients that support up to 4 monitors at 4K resolution each, Amazon DCV uses end-to-end AES-256 encryption to safeguard both pixels and end-user inputs.
Amazon DCV Pricing
Amazon Entire Cloud:
Using Amazon DCV on AWS does not incur any additional fees. Clients only have to pay for the EC2 resources they really utilize.
On-site and third-party cloud computing
Please get in touch with DCV distributors or resellers in your area here for more information about licensing and pricing for Amazon DCV.

THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND TRUE
i was just talking to a friend who built a PC, and since copies of windows 10 are not really available to buy new anymore, he was begrudgingly forced to get windows 11
something VERY frustrating that he noticed on this new install is that ALL of the basic directories (Documents folder, Downloads folder, Desktop folder, Pictures, Music, etc) were automatically being synced as OneDrive folders. Meaning they were tied to the cloud and having backups uploaded. Without it even saying "OneDrive" anywhere when you looked at them in file explorer.
This means that when you hit the free cloud storage limit, probably only like 5GB or something, windows would tell you that you need to buy more storage.
This seems very deliberately malicious, because people who don't understand local vs cloud storage will think that they have to sign up for a monthly subscription just to HAVE DATA on their computer.
If you are tech-savvy enough to do some googling and search through the god-awful hard-to-find OneDrive settings and turn off auto-sync, you can easily store a lot more in your Documents. I think most SSDs have a reasonable 300-500 GB minimum.
This is something that makes me deeply angry. It's no surprise that tech companies were already trying to coerce users into relying on subscription-based cloud storage. but this is full-on malicious design
another thought about "gen z and gen alpha don't know how to use computers, just phone apps" is that this is intentionally the direction tech companies have pushed things in, they don't want users to understand anything about the underlying system, they want you to just buy a subscription to a thing and if it doesn't do what you need it to, you just upgrade to the more expensive one. users who look at configuration files are their worst nightmare

Top Challenges Web Development Companies Solve for Growing Brands
As your business grows, so do the expectations from your website. It’s no longer just a digital brochure—it’s your sales engine, lead generator, support channel, and brand identity rolled into one. Yet, as demands increase, many companies begin facing technical, design, and strategic roadblocks that can stall momentum.
This is where a Web Development Company becomes an essential partner. From handling complex integrations to future-proofing your platform, development agencies specialize in solving challenges that in-house teams may not be equipped to manage at scale.
1. Scaling Website Performance Under Growing Traffic
A major concern for any growing brand is website performance. As user traffic spikes, especially during product launches or campaigns, slow page loads or downtime can cost conversions and damage trust.
Professional development companies address this by:
Optimizing server architecture
Implementing caching strategies
Using CDNs for faster content delivery
Migrating to scalable cloud environments like AWS or Azure
These technical improvements ensure your site remains fast and available—no matter how quickly your business scales.
2. Managing Complex Integrations Across Systems
Growth brings more tools into your ecosystem—CRM platforms, inventory management, analytics tools, payment gateways, and marketing automation systems. The challenge is making all these systems communicate efficiently.
Web development companies build robust APIs and custom integrations that:
Sync data across platforms in real-time
Improve backend workflows
Enable personalized user experiences
Reduce manual errors
This level of technical harmony allows businesses to automate operations and focus more on growth strategies.
3. Ensuring Security and Compliance
As your brand attracts more users, it also becomes a bigger target for cyber threats. Ensuring data protection and regulatory compliance becomes non-negotiable.
A development agency strengthens your security through:
SSL implementation
Secure login and authentication systems
Regular vulnerability scanning
Compliance with global standards (like GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA)
With increasing customer expectations around data safety, proactive security is one of the most critical areas that expert developers address.
4. Creating Seamless Multi-Device User Experiences
Today’s users interact with your brand across desktops, tablets, and smartphones. An inconsistent experience on any of these devices can lead to lost engagement and sales.
Development companies apply responsive design principles and rigorous cross-browser testing to deliver:
Consistent UI/UX across all screen sizes
Intuitive navigation and interaction models
Faster mobile performance
This ensures that whether your customer is shopping, booking, or reading your blog—they enjoy a seamless experience every time.
5. Handling Content Management and Workflow Bottlenecks
Growing brands often struggle with content management. Outdated CMS platforms or poor backend architecture make publishing, editing, or localizing content a painful process.
A web development partner can:
Customize or migrate your CMS to a more scalable platform (like WordPress, Webflow, or headless CMSs)
Streamline your editorial workflows
Enable role-based access and approvals
This boosts content efficiency and lets your team stay focused on brand messaging instead of technical hurdles.
6. Maintaining Brand Consistency During Expansion
As businesses expand into new markets or launch new services, it becomes challenging to maintain brand consistency across all touchpoints.
Web development companies address this with:
Design systems and reusable components
Scalable style guides
Modular content blocks that adapt to new campaigns
This approach keeps your digital presence uniform while supporting the flexibility your marketing team needs.
7. Driving Continuous Optimization
Growth isn’t just about adding new features—it’s about refining what already exists. Development partners continuously test, monitor, and iterate to improve:
Conversion rates
Page performance
Funnel drop-offs
Technical SEO
By using tools like heatmaps, A/B testing platforms, and performance trackers, they help brands evolve based on real user behavior, not guesswork.
Conclusion
As your brand scales, so do the complexities of your digital infrastructure. A growing business needs more than a basic website—it requires a platform that evolves alongside it. Whether it’s integrating systems, securing customer data, optimizing for mobile, or scaling performance, these challenges can’t be left to chance.
That’s why partnering with a Web Development Company is not just helpful—it’s a strategic necessity. With deep technical knowledge and a forward-thinking approach, they ensure your website not only keeps up with growth but actively drives it.

Windows 11 is also just, weirdly slower and harder to use than 10. Like I'm sure it's as speedy as 10 but I've noticed a number of things that 11 just does worse.
The boot time in 11 is noticeably slower than 10's. This might be hardware dependant but my laptop is most definitely more powerful than my PC, why is it booting up slower.
The context menus in 11 are unintuitive and takes more time to use. 10 gave you everything you needed and then some right then and there. 11 feels the need to go "Nono, these are all the ones you need!" and gives you a curated context menu that may or may not have something you need. Then if you don't, you can click a show more button and it GIVES you 10's context menu! It's like they knew 10's was objectively better, but still felt like replacing it with an inferior version and make it a selling point!
File Explorer, while just being a reskinned version of 10's, is worse than 10's in every way. Not only does it try and push cloud saving on you, a file storage method less reliable than local storage, but it removed features that were a blessing on 10! Why can't I drag files through the address bar anymore? Why out of everything to remove, did you remove a genuinely useful feature?
OneDrive. Just in general. I get it, cloud saving is useful and Microsoft not only owns OneDrive but also Windows. Put two and two together. Easy millions of customers. The problem lies when you incorporate it so much into Windows that it's actively bothersome. It tries to make you use it every step of the way until you either give up and use it, or disable it fully (cuz of course Microsoft would make it hard and un-user friendly on purpose). And then if you try and use it without paying for more storage, you're only given 5GB to use. Now, if you're tech savvy like me, you would know 5GB was a lot in the 90s. That today could be majority filled by a few music albums. It is a pitiful amount of storage to give for free, and they expect you to be happy with it or pay a subscription for more. For every fault Google has, they at least give you the courtesy of 15 GB across your account. 5GB on a cloud service that you feel pressured to use on a device you plan to use for countless years is absurd.
THE SETUP OH MY GOD SETTING UP WINDOWS 11 IS A HELL I DO NOT WISH ON ANYONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW ANY BETTER. Not only does it require you to be online for the entire setup, but it outright forces you to use your Microsoft account to continue the setup. Local accounts are a thing of the past I guess! Granny might not know what a Microsoft account is but she better learn quick because she's not gonna be able to use the flashy new laptop her grandchild got her until she does! There's a way to bypass this but it's so hidden away and unfriendly to the user that it feels like your only option is the Microsoft account. Then it gives you all these different options that either do nothing or are just methods of nabbing your data. Then you're free to the desktop except NOT REALLY because if you skipped anything, every so often it'll bother you in a full screen banner asking you to "Finish setting up pwetty pwease :3" and it will keep bothering you about it until you either do it or turn off a very specific, hidden away setting in the settings. It's fucking awful and objectively the worst Windows OS to setup. How do you fuck up setting up an OS?! You had this down pat in the 90s and 2000s!!!
Windows 11 as a whole is style over substance. If you completely ignore under the hood differences, Windows 11 at its core is Windows 10 reskinned. But everything now has these flashy new animations and rounded corners and translucency! It's like Vista and 7 again! EXCEPT IT ISN'T BECAUSE VISTA AND 7 DIDN'T SACRIFICE USABILITY AND PERFORMANCE FOR GLASS WINDOWS AND FADE IN & OUT (ok well Vista did but 7 improved upon it). Trying to resize a window from a corner is so needlessly difficult because of the rounded corners making it unclear where the hitbox actually is, and the animations for the start menu and everything else is so clunky and unneeded. Is it cool the first time? Yes, it is. Is it cool the 1,037,028th time when I just want to quickly open something? FUCKING NO! ITS BOTHERSOME.
Listen, as a tech person who is not only savvy in the medium to an extent but also enjoys and cares for said medium, I'm well aware most of these issues are things the average user wouldn't give two shits about. But the reason why I complain is because average users shouldn't be subject to such hell also. In the process of trying to make a more user friendly Windows, Microsoft made a Windows so user unfriendly and counterintuitive that it's actively frustrating to use if you don't know the right things to do to make it not frustrating. And with Microsoft's hyperfixation on AI bleeding into 11 as a whole with Copilot, it's only getting worse.
I can only hope the next Windows OS is a better experience across the board to use for both the average customer and the tech savvy, and given The Cycle™, that is a likely probability. But also given Microsoft and Windows 11's state right now, it wouldn't surprise me if the next OS is just as bad, if not worse.
All this to say: Linux users? I understand you now.
... least it's not as bad as MacOS eh?
getting new technology feels more infuriating every year. got a new computer for the first time in 8 years and everything about windows 11 and how it handles onedrive is driving me up the wall
