Day 20 of #the100dayproject and I had a walk down to the harbour to get some photos to sketch from. I found a cute little house, and knowing how terrible I am at perspective drawing, I wanted to challenge myself to draw this. I think it turned out pretty well, I focused more on getting the perspective as good as I could, instead of all the little details I would usually focus on. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_c_mJ1Bj-2/?igshid=1b6pqrjj863q2

“Charity the Toad Witch:
Near the East Devon village of Axmouth there is said to have lived a witch by the name of charity. A story about Charity reveals her to have been of a special class of witch known as a 'toad witch'; being a witch who works her or his brand of magic via the aid and presence of toads. It is said that the toads with which Charity had developed a working relationship were kept beneath her bed in a large old box.
In one of the windows of her cottage was a broken pane, and it was through this opening that the villagers believed Old Charity would travel forth every night upon her broomstick.
As with all old time witches, Charity was believed to possess the power to curse, and her skills in this dark area were experienced by a man who lived in the cottage next to hers. He had tried to keep pigs, but as soon as any pig was brought into the sty, the poor creature would 'turn somersaults' until exhaustion caused them to expire. Because of Charity's reputation for witchcraft, her neighbour naturally suspected his home to have been bewitched to the extent that he would never be able to keep pigs there, and so, of course, he left to live elsewhere in the village. Perhaps, before leaving, he had words with Charity and angered her; for the man was struck with illness that no doctor could understand or provide any helpful treatment for. His suspicions again turning to Charity, the man made a journey to consult with a white witch who, through his divinations, confirmed that witchcraft was the cause of the man's illness and that Charity was the culprit. The white witch told him that the ill-influence could be lifted, but that it would take nine days to be achieved. By his magic, he would cause Charity to be afflicted with illness, and upon the ninth night of her suffering she would be compelled to travel along the street, crying bitterly as she went, whereupon her ill-influence would be lifted. Upon the ninth night, it was said that Charity was spied leaving her cottage via the keyhole, crying loudly along the street just as the white witch had said. The following day, both the man and Charity had been relieved of their ailments and were quite well again.”

It was a pleasure hike. I walked from Axmouth in Dorset (England) to Lyme Regis along the sea cliffs. Highly recommend. I got icecream at the end.
Ah, this makes sense then. It does sound rather enjoyable, however when I travel I am usually searching for a prize greater than ice cream. I once hiked about 16 miles through the remote steppes of Eastern Europe to find the true origins of - ah. Well. Some things are better not revealed to muggles.

Axmouth harbour, East Devon by Baz Richardson (catching up again) These days village of Axmouth in East Devon is the best part of a mile inland, on the east bank of the River Axe. However, Axmouth harbour itself is downriver at the narrow mouth of the river, just to the seaward of Axmouth Bridge, from which this shot was taken. The small town of Seaton is just out of shot to the right. For many hundreds of years the harbour played an important role, but the coming of the railway in 1868 and the building of the bridge across the river in 1877 effectively sealed the fate of the harbour. It is now home to the Axe Yacht Club and a number of local fishing boats. https://flic.kr/p/2mXBEAD

Nomada fucata Panzer, 1798 - Painted Nomad Bee by Peter M Greenwood Family Apidae British Isles: Axmouth: Haven Cliff. Landslips on cliff along beach. A medium-sized nomad bee with a single yellow spot on the scutellum (occasionally reduced in males), yellow tegulae and yellow pronotal tubercles. The pronotal collar is usually mostly yellow but can be dark in spring males. The abdomen typically has tergite 1 red with a black hind margin. Tergite 2 can be yellow banded or the yellow band broken centrally by a reddish patch. The female antennae are entirely orange but the male antennae usually have a dark patch half way along the flagella. This was once a scarce southern species but has shown a dramatic spread in recent decades, mirroring the spread of its host, Andrena flavipes. It now occurs as far north as Denbighshire and Shropshire and is locally common in many areas. It uses a similar range of habitats to the host, with coastal grassland, soft rock cliffs and old quarries/sandpits much favoured. Like the hots, it is bivoltine, with a spring generation that typically flies from March to June and second, shorter-haired generation that flies mostly in July and August.
