14/4/17 Azalea japonica, in my mum's garden. For years, either for Mother's Day or my mum's birthday, I bought my mum an azalea plant. This one is still going strong and creates a blanket of colour.

The backs of his pointed ears are covered with brown fur, and he has a pair of brown antlers. He usually wears a navy and gray uniform, with the royal emblem embroidered on the chest, as well as black boots.

Yunshan arrived about two years later, to serve the younger prince, and Xuesong was the one who showed him the ropes.

However, he does get upset if he feels his efforts aren’t appreciated enough, though he does try to hide this out of politeness. He’s responsible in his work and is rarely, if ever, late. His ever-smiling disposition sometimes causes people to think him silly, but he’s actually quite aware of the goings-on around him, and clever enough to use that knowledge if it could aid the people he cares about. 🌺 🪺Blessed Beltane and first of May. Depicted in the photos is a very prolific Azalea Japonica. Also known as the Japanese Azalea. Azaleas are a branch of the rhododendron family, with a smaller growth size, daintier leaves and a denser growth habit than other rhododendrons. 🌞🌷

🕯Beltane falls about halfway between the spring equinox and the coming summer solstice and marks the beginning of summer. It is obviously a fire festival and possible celebrations include bonfires, decorating homes with flowers, and may poles. 🍓

🍯 While renowned for its beauty, the azalea is also highly toxic. Containing andromedotoxins in both its leaves and nectar, including honey from the nectar. Bees are deliberately fed on Azalea/Rhododendron nectar in some parts of Turkey, in the aim of producing a mind-altering but potentially lethal honey known as "mad honey". 🐝

🏔Consumption of the plant and its secondary products, can cause a uncommon reaction called grayanotoxin poisoning. Also known as mad honey disease, honey intoxication, or rhododendron poisoning. Mad honey - also known as Miel Fou - is most frequently produced, and consumed, in regions of Turkey and Nepal as a recreational drug and traditional medicine. Those who use the honey claim it can aid with sleep, lower cholesterol and cure coughs and sour throats. Depending on how much a person consumes, a persons reaction to Mad Honey can range from hallucinations and a slower heartbeat to temporary paralysis and unconsciousness. 🩺

🏺One of the earliest documented accounts of Miel Fou consumption comes from Xenophon of Athens, a student of Socrates, who describes a company of Greek soldiers in 401 B.C. eating honey stolen from beehives along their route through Turkey. It records them vomiting, having diarrhoea, became disoriented, and loosing the ability to stand. However they were apparently fine the next day. There is another record from 69 B.C. of Pompey the Great’s army falling victim to quite the literal ‘honeytrap’ in the same region. The record states that local opposition placed hives along the marching route, and then swooped in to massacre the intoxicated soldiers. ⚔️

GOODBYE FLOWERS

 These are the flowers I know I love and miss.I had to leave the garden. There was the japonica in Spring with the dark green leaves and the scarlet blossoms in February, they are in bud right now, I bet.

In the autumn we had nereines and iris.  Then in the depths of winter the jasmin was in flower.  There was always something. 

In the back garden were roses, (cerise, peach, deep red).  Lily of the valley, white and fragrant grew in that spot by the fence half- way down the border, after we had finished with the deep blue grape hyacinth that defied winter’s blast in January, they grew in the back and front garden.  

 Then there was bright orange crocosmia later and last of all there were the tall pink  anenomes. By the bay window at the front there were early pink camellias, brave and uncaring, and leaning by the front wall was the azalea, in brassy pink.

At the back I deliberately grew buddleia, lots of it to attract the insects.  It grew tall and strong, purple lilac-like in summer and the insects and bees were grateful. By mistake there was a patch of mint that had gone to flower and the bees hung out there.  They loved it and came and drank.  I am sure they made fine honey from the mint patch.
