Addressing a rally in Azamgarh, PM Modi also alleged that the Congress had persecuted refugees for decades and that the latest example of ‘Modi’s guarantee’ is the CAA. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday berated the Opposition for allegedly trying to push the country towards riots by spreading lies about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The Prime Minister said that granting Indian citizenship to refugees has already started under CAA and that although those in the INDIA bloc claim they will remove it nobody can “end the CAA.” Addressing a rally in Azamgarh, he also alleged that the Congress had persecuted refugees for decades and that the latest example of ‘Modi’s guarantee’ is the CAA. “Granting Indian citizenship to refugees has already started under CAA… They all have been living in our country for a long, they are those people who have to suffer because of the partition of the country based on religion,” PM Modi said. “These (Congress) people climb the stairs of power taking the name of Mahatma Gandhi, but they don’t remember the words of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi himself ensured these people (minorities living in neighbouring countries) that they could come to India whenever they wanted. In the last 70 years, thousands of families have taken asylum in India to safeguard their culture and religion. However, Congress never bothered to think about them because they were not Congress’ vote bank. SP, Congress, and INDIA bloc are spreading lies about CAA and tried to push the country towards riots,” the Prime Minister said. PM Modi further said that he “unmasked” the intentions of Congress and SP, adding that they can not end CAA. “It’s Modi who has unmasked you. You are a hypocrite, communal. You left this nation to burn in the communal fire for 60 years. I am saying it clearly, it’s Modi’s guarantee: ‘desh-videsh kahin se bhi, jo bhi taakat ikatthi karni hai kar lo’… You can’t end CAA. We are working on giving citizenship to those who are victims of partition, which has already started under CAA,” he added. PM Modi further said that the excitement shown by the people of Srinagar in the polls is proof that no one can bring back Article 370 and do politics of “vote bank.” “Desh mein koi maai ka laal paida hua hai jo CAA hata sake? (has anyone been born in this country who can repeal the CAA?). Nobody can remove the CAA,” PM Modi said. On Wednesday, the central government handed over the first set of citizenship certificates, over two months after notifying the rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla handed over citizenship certificates to some applicants. The Home Secretary congratulated the applicants and highlighted salient features of the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, as per a statement by the Union Home Ministry. The CAA, introduced by the Narendra Modi government and passed by Parliament in 2019, aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants–including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians–who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014. Lok Sabha By-elections: Voting begins in UP’s Azamgarh and Rampur seats!!!

The by-elections to be Azamgarh's seat were necessitated by the resignation of Akhilesh Yadav who was elected to the Up legislative assembly as an MLA. The Rampur seat was vacated by senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan who too was elected to the state assembly.

This morning, polling began in UP’s Azamgarh and Rampur. These are the districts that are considered a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party in the state. More than 35 lakh people are eligible to vote in these polls and will be deciding the fate of 19 candidates.

The by-elections to the Azamgarh seat were necessitated by the resignation of Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav who was elected to the UP legislative assembly as an MLA in the elections earlier this year. The Rampur seat was vacated by senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan who was elected to the state assembly.

The polling has started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm as the chief electoral officer said. Two general and as many expenses observes have been deputed by it keep an eye on the polls. The government's official statement said 291 sector magistrates, 40 zonal magistrates, and 433 micro-observers have also been deputed.

An adequate number of central and state forces has been deployed to ensure the secure and peaceful conduct of the polls. The responsibility of the security EVMs and strongrooms has been given to the central forces.

As per officials, 13 candidates are in the fray from Azamgarh where 18.38 lakh people are eligible to vote. 6 candidates are contesting from Rampur and the district has 17.06 lakh voters. From Rampur, BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi who recently joined the party while SP has fielded Asim Raja, handpicked by Khan.

Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav did not campaign in the bypolls. In 2019, Lok Sabha elections, Azam Khan received 5,59,177 votes whereas BJP candidates Jaya Prada got 4,49.180 votes and Congress candidate Sanjay Kapoor lost his deposit.

The state must not play with the medical studies: HC

The Supreme Court of India has sent a stern message to the states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and asked them to level up the quality of their medical colleges. The court on Monday said that the quality of Medical education should not be compromised by the state run colleges and threatened the colleges in the three states of a court directed closure from the next academic session. 

Last year, the Medical Council of India scanned several medical colleges and flagged eight medical colleges that lacked in terms of infrastructure and other criteria under the norms set by the Medical Council of India. These eight colleges were barred from offering admission to any new students. However, the apex court offered an interim relief to thee colleges and allowed them to intake students for the academic year 2018-19 MBBS Course, after the state government submitted written assurance to rectify all the deficiencies. 

The MCI appeared in front of a bench of Justices S A Bobde and Deepak Gupta and said that a medical college in Uttar Pradesh did not let their team visit the college campus when the team wanted to audit whether the deficiencies mentioned earlier were removed or not. 

"You cannot make mockery of medical education. The quality of medical and legal education cannot be compromised. You are there for making money but we are concerned about education. This cannot be allowed to go on and we won't allow admission in those colleges next year. We know how to take the decision and we have done it earlier. You will have to close the college," said the bench.

Uttar Pradesh’s Government Allopathic Medical College at Banda, Government Medical College at Saharanpur, Government Medical College and Super Specialty Hospital at Azamgarh and Rajkiya Medical College at Jalaun district, Bihar’s Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College (Gaya), Institute of Medical Sciences (Nalanda) and Government Medical College at Bettiah and Jharkhand’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College at Jamshedpur are the colleges under the radar.
