Obscure Animation Subject #61: 8 Man
Originally posted on April 21, 2023.
Also known as 8th Man in the US, this anime was produced by TCJ (now Eiken) and aired on TBS from November 7, 1963 to December 31, 1964 for 56 episodes. Its based on the manga by Kazumasa Hirai with illustrations by Jiro Kuwata.
Detective Yokoda is murdered by criminals and his body is retrieved by Professor Tani. Tani takes the body to his laboratory where he attempts to transfer Yokoda's life force into an android body, an experiment that has already failed seven times. Yokoda is reborn as an android.
Renamed to 8 Man, he is able to dash at impossible speeds as well as shape-shift into other people. He takes on his former body, this time taking on the name "Hachiro Azuma." He keeps this identity a secret, known only to Tani and his police boss, Chief Tanaka.
Even his girlfriend Sachiko and his friend Ichiro are not aware that he is an android. As 8-Man, Hachiro fights crime–eventually avenging his own murder. To rejuvenate his powers, he smokes "energy" cigarettes that he carries in a case. 8 Man is Japan's earliest cyborg superhero.
8 Man was so popular for its significance, the franchise spawned two live-action films, along with a 4-episode OVA series 8 Man After, produced by J.C.Staff. The series was released from August 21 to November 22, 1993, and was later adapted in manga form in 1994.
A manga sequel, 8 Man Infinity, was released between 2005 and 2007. The show also spawned a public domain cartoon account to get its username and profile. Isn’t that cool or what?! While TCJ had bigger latter successes like Sazae-san, 8 Man was an important part of its history.

this post is super long i'm sorry in advance...
i got curious so i was looking up stuff about Iwanuma City bc bakuten brain rot is wild and i found an article that said bakuten "is part of a three part plan called Zutto Ouen Project 2011 + 10.. (ずっとおうえん。プロジェクト 2011+10…) These anime are about the affected areas of the Great Tohoku Earthquake and will be aired on Fuji TV to try to help promote the affected areas." source
so i got super fascinated and looked up more of the Zutto Ouen Project. The article I looked at said, "The three major projects are not directly related. But they all take place in either Fukushima, Miyagi, or Iwate prefectures in the Tohoku region." source These prefectures were all specifically affected by the 2011 tsunami and earthquake. The projects are as follows:
Bakuten!!
Miyagi Prefecture
for those finding this post that aren't in the bakuten fandom, bakuten is a 12 episode sports anime about men's rhythmic gymnastics (there is also a movie coming soon)
The first episode was released in April 2021
Can be streamed on crunchyroll
Misaki no Mayoiga
Iwate Prefecture
this one is a movie based on a novel by Sachiko Kashiwaba
Released on August 2021
I can’t find a streaming service that officially has a sub or dub, but if anyone knows of one please let me know (i am not above watching bootleg versions)
Hula Fulla Dance
Fukushima Prefecture
this is a movie about a girl who works at a hawaiian spa in fukushima
This was released 10 days ago in Japan (on Dec 3, 2021)
I also can’t find a streaming service that this is on in the US, but it was released very recently so I’m not sure if there will be or not.
i will definitely have to go watch the two movies now.
it gets bakuten specific from this point on btw
the project is specifically to promote tourism to those prefectures to help rebuild the economy which is super cool but it also allows for some easter eggs and culture to show up in/for bakuten
• it's why we get this image of the boys in this specific outfit, which was already explained in this post by paul
Tumblr media
• also in episode 7, during the flashback where the third years are talking to shida in a small restaurant, there's a little doll in the bottom left corner. that doll is actually Iwanuma's PR character, Kakarichou
Tumblr media
i'm sure there's a ton more easter eggs but that's all i could find offhand (i might go rewatch the whole show just to try to find more easter eggs like this)
but it got me thinking, a lot of animes use real life places as a basis for their scenery, especially sports animes, and since this sports anime in particular is meant to show off miyagi, there's probably very specific locations used in bakuten that shouldn't be too hard to find images of online. and i was right.. a quick google search of iwanuma city got me these things:
*disclaimer: there is no actual proof that i can find of this, this is just my own best guess based on basic googling so if i'm incorrect don't be surprised. that being said, i'm pretty confident in what i found.
millennium hope hills
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
takekoma shrine (from the art above)
Tumblr media
the path that shida is always walking on
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's definitely more places i could find if i looked hard enough. it's 4am when i'm making this though, and i have finals tomorrow, so i will have to look next week. that being said, someone remind me that i want to try to find: sekiou university (where they use the mat), the place where they have the competitions, maybe the high school (but i imagine this will be particularly difficult), and the goose wall (this one may be impossible but if it exists i have to know).
on top of all that, i found out that the characters names (last name specifically) are all actual towns and cities and places in the tohoku region. a lot of them are places in miyagi specifically (though not all of them).
i double checked all of them. both teams.
most of them are cities, towns, districts, etc. not all of them though. ryugamori is a mountain. azuma is a mountain range.
anyway thats all i am allowing myself to look up right now since i need sleep

Character: Hikaru Azuma
From: With the Light
Representation:  Autism, intellectual disability
Their Importance: Hikaru is a rare example of an autistic, intellectually disabled character who actually seems like a real person with personality traits, not a magical savant or burden to show how virtuous his family is. There’s plenty of moments of family melodrama as well as relatable humour. Overall I got the sense that the author cared deeply about the subject rather than aiming for Oscar bait. Unlike most autistic child stories, it’s made clear that the stress of raising disabled children is no excuse for abuse and that it’s traumatizing for the child. Most narratives save all their sympathy for abusive parents and present autistic children as magically immune to emotional harm. This is the only piece of fiction I’ve seen that treats intellectually disabled adults as adults rather than overgrown children- there is a lot of focus on the trials of growing up with disabilities e.g. developing sexual feelings, the lack of services for disabled adults instead of just focusing on cutesy kids. While the series was tragically cut short by the authors death the intention was for Hikaru to end up as a “happy working adult” living independently.
Issues: There’s a lot of focus on ableism and abuse aimed at disabled characters - it’s an integral part of the manga’s acceptance message. While it’s far more humanizing and realistic than most disability narratives Sachiko(Hikaru’s mother)’s narration does frequently dip into inspiration porn territory- which is still preferable to the outright contempt that’s still acceptable for parents to show to their autistic children in parenting narratives.
Thanks to anon for the write-up!

What’s In a Book? Part 29
While going through my collection I managed to find a few books that have yet to be featured on here yet. I decided to go with this one as, upon further review, I noticed that it actually contained a wealth of information that I had previously ignored ^^;
Tumblr media
Image of book’s cover courtesy of myself. Hana Akari: Showa Meigiren (はなあかり: 昭和名妓連) - Brilliant Flowers: The Showa Period’s Finest Geisha by Kobunshi Katsura (桂小文枝) (ISBN Unknown). Date of Publication: 1988 Language: Japanese and English (Some Essays and Names Only) Format: Hardcover Availability: Can be found up for auction on a fairly regular basis Price: Anywhere from $30 - $80 Errors: 0 This book is interesting, and that’s putting it mildly. Basically, it provides us with some of the best raw data for its time: The names of the most prominent geisha in each district of each city across all of Japan. It is a literal who’s who guide to the karyukai across the country in the late 1980s and is illuminating both in small essays that can be found at the front and back of the book explaining various schools and styles, but especially because it provides us with images, most in full color, of these amazing women.  The book overall is divided into regions which are then broken down further from there. The regions, cities, and districts of each named geisha are: Part 1: Hokkaido (北海道) Set 1: Asahikawa (旭川) - Kofune (小舟) Set 2: Sapporo (札幌) - Onobu (お信), Itoko (い登子), Izumi (いづみ), and Charako (茶良子) Set 3: Otaru (小樽) - Komomo (小桃), Mametarō (豆太郎), Kiku (㐂久), and Gorō (吾朗) Set 4: Muroran (室蘭) - Chonko (﹅子) Set 5: Hakodate (函館) - Nantoki (喃登希) and Kohide (小ひで)  Part 2: Tohoku (東北) Set 1: Morioka (盛岡) - Tsutamaru (都多)   Set 2: Hanamaki (花巻) - Kimiko (君子) and Keiko (桂子) Set 3: Aomori (青森) - Chame (茶目) Set 4: Yamagata (山形) - Kochō (小蝶) and Kinta (金太)   Set 5: Akita (秋田) - Chiyogiku (千代菊) Set 6: Obara (小原) - Ikkyū (一休), Aki (秋), and Kogiku (小菊) Set 7: Fukushima (福島) - Sakura (さくら) and Hidemi (秀美) Part 3: Kanto (関東) Set 1: Takasaki (高崎) - Kiyoko (清子) Set 2: Kusatsu (草津) - Sankoma (三駒) and Harumi (春美)   Set 3: Sarugakyo (猿ヶ京) - Kikutaro (菊太郎), Koshizu (小静) Set 4: Minakami (水上) - Yutaka (ゆたか) Set 5: Oyama (大山) - Kunika (くに香) Set 6: Tokyo (東京) - Fumie (冨美江) and Wakaryū (若龍) Set 7: Yugawara (湯河原) - Okame (お加目), Matsue (松栄), and Taeko (多恵子) Part 4: Chubu (中部) Set 1: Niigata (新潟) - Chiyogiku (千代菊) Set 2: Takada (高田) - Kazuko (加津子) Set 3: Shibata (新発田) - Renko (れん子) Set 4: Kamidayamadatogura (上山田戸倉) - Senryū (泉竜), Suzuyakko (鈴奴), Saizō (才三), and Utamaru (歌丸) Set 5: Kamisuwa (上諏訪) - Chiyomaru (千代丸) Set 6: Isawa (石和) - Miki (美樹) and Koyakko (小奴) Set 7: Kōfu (甲府) - Misako (美佐子), Kimika (君香), and Hisayo (久代) Set 8: Inuyama (犬山) - Misako (みさ子) Set 9: Hamamatsu (浜松) - Gonza (権三), Ichitarō (市太郎), Otomi (乙美), Koman (小萬), Eiko (栄子), Hatsutarō (初太郎), Tsuruchiyo (鶴千代), Yasuyo (泰世), Sakura (佐久良), Sachiko (幸子), Toshie (利枝), Komomo (小百々), Momoko (百々子), Fumiya (二三弥), Mitsugiku (光菊), Azuma (吾妻), Akiko (明子), and Ichiha (市羽) Set 10: Kanazawa Higashi/East (金沢東) - Koman (小まん) Set 11: Kanazawa Kazuemachi (金沢主計町) - Hitoha (一葉) and Kyōko (京子) Set 12: Kanazawa Nishi/West (金沢西) - Mineko (峯子), Sachiyo (幸代), and Marichiyo (まり千代) Set 13: Fukui (福井) - Makiko (真㐂子) and Yurako (由良子) Set 14: Yuzawa (湯沢) - Katsumaru (勝丸) and Hiromi (弘美) Set 15: Nagoya (名古屋) - Fukuchiyo (福千代), Takako (敬子), Tsuruko (つる子), Mitsuyo (光代), Kiku (喜久), Emiya (英美弥), Sanchō (三長), Satoyo (里代), Mitsu (未津), Ayako (あや子), Kinmaru (金丸), Naoe (直枝), Fukuwaka (福若), Hisae (比三枝), Mako (間子), Yasuko (康子), Toshino (とし乃), Koie (鯉恵), Mariko (まり子), Katsuko (かつ子), Maiko (舞子), Kingyo (金漁), Hideka (秀佳), Chiyoe (千代江), and Motoko (素子) Part 5: Kinki (近畿) Set 1: Osaka (大阪) Part A: Osaka Minami (大阪南) - Yukiharu (雪春), Kikutsuru (菊つる), Kikue (菊恵), Rikimaru (力丸), Kinko (きん子), Yukiji (ゆき路), Kōjirō (廣二郎), Yoshiko (よし子), Terugiku (照菊), Midori (美登利), Hankō (はん幸), Kazumi (かず美), Yukie (ゆき恵), Yūka (勇花), Suzuka (鈴佳), Masako (まさ子), Fukuemi (福笑), Masachiyo (政千代), Kikufumi (菊二三), and Yūko (祐子). The most informative part that I admit I skipped initially is the small print under each geisha’s name: their natori specialty, natori teachers, and natori names. This means that we can trace back what schools were the main specialty of each region going back decades. Since this is invaluable for anyone studying geisha over time, I’ll write in what schools were followed, but I will keep names a secret. Set 7: Kagoshima (鹿児島) - Kineya (杵屋) and Tagoto (田毎) for song. The reason why this book has no ISBN is because it was self published. The original cover price was ¥30,000, which is almost $300 USD. This price was likely set due to the vast amount of research done, including acquiring the many photographs, and printing costs. This price was also likely due to it being targeted at serious karyukai connoisseurs as that price in the 1980s would have been much higher now due to inflation. Nowadays you don’t have to pay as much for this book as most Japanese sellers see it as outdated and it can be found quite regularly on Japanese retail sites, such as Yahoo Japan Auctions or Rakuten.   The only “errors: that I could find were some spelling issues, but that’s because they’re using the Japanese way of writing Romaji and not the Hepburn System. So, I’m not counting them as errors, but rather just making note of them to anyone who purchases this book. Rating: ✪✪✪✪ (out of 5)

n this masterlist you’ll find comic/movie/videogame/tv show characters that have Autism (not the actor but only the character they play). Like/Reblog if you thought it was useful.
Comics
Hikaru Azuma(With the Light: Raising an Autistic Child) [x] Sachiko and Masato's firstborn, and the main character of the series. His autism showed up one and a half years after his birth.  Hikaru hated to be picked up and held as a baby and did not grow in step with children his age, leading Sachiko to seek a doctor for him.  He always has been wearing diapers for a long time. He even stays in his stroller even when he's too old for it.  Hikaru dislikes loud and painful noises such as crowds, Buddhist chanting, and babies crying. He likes trains and memorizes many of them, including ones no longer running. Like many autistic people, when something is changed in his routine without any warning, such as a show switching times or being canceled, it upsets him. However, as the story continues, he and his parents figure out how to handle the situation. Since elementary school, he starts to show some unique talents, including cooking and mixing colors.
Black Manta(Aquaman)[x] An alternative version was given in #8 of the 2003 Aquaman series. In this origin, the boy who would become Black Manta was an autistic orphan placed in Gotham City's Arkham Asylum. He felt comfortable in freezing cold water, but found cotton sheets excruciatingly painful. Because the attendants at Arkham did not know how to deal with autism, they would end up restraining him to the bed as he struggled and screamed whenever they tried putting him to bed. In this version, young Black Manta was also fascinated when he saw Aquaman on television.
Johnny Do(Psi-Force)[x] Johnny Do is highly autistic and was treated as a virtual animal in a Russian project investigating paranormals.  Boyd was able to forge a connection with him and became his caregiver. “Samurai Sensei”
121.
Tumblr media
Title: Samurai Sensei (“Samurai Teacher”) Genre: Comedy, Sci-Fi Season: Fall 2015 TV Station: TV Asahi Theme Song: “Samurai Song” (Kanjani8) Starring: Ryo Nishikido, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Manami Higa, Ryusei Fujii, Nicole Ishida, Leo Morimoto Date Finished: February 28, 2018 My Personal Reason for Watching: Ryo!!
Tumblr media
(^^ Wait…this isn’t “Chonmage Pudding” again, is it?)
Another drama watched in the past week!:D
“Samurai Sensei” is about Takechi Hanpeita (Nishikido), a samurai from the Bakumatsu era in the Edo period.  He time slips into 150 years in the future to present day Japan.  After Makoto Saeki (Morimoto) finds him, he appoints him to be the teacher at a cram school held in his house.  There, Takechi tries to become accustomed to present day Japan, but hopes to time slip back to his own era at the same time.  His new-found friends, Saeki’s grandchildren, Haruka (Higa) and Toranosuke (Fujii), help Takechi along the way.  However, when a samurai from Takechi’s time period, the infamous Sakamoto Ryoma (Kamiki) finds Takechi, trouble and drama ensue.
Tumblr media
(^^ Two infamous samurais trapped in the Heisei era!)
The premise of the drama is already silly, so we know that this is purely a comedy with some time travel and historical elements.  It was an easy drama to watch (only 8 episodes) and there wasn’t that much to think about.  If you enjoy learning more about Japanese history or have knowledge in that area, the drama might be more enjoyable.  For me, it was an excuse to watch Ryo play a samurai again.  The best parts of this drama for me were seeing Takechi react to all of the technological advances of the modern era.  From cars to television to kaiten sushi, watching him marvel at these new inventions had me laugh at loud at times.
Tumblr media
(^^ Sushi on a conveyor belt?? What is this nonsense??)
There was also a great supporting cast in this drama.  Kamiki as Ryoma was a surprise at first, but he brought great mystery to the role. Toranosuke was hilarious and after seeing Fujii in “Yokoso, Wagaya E” and this drama back-to-back, I like him in more comedic roles (as expected from a member of Johnny’s West!).   Nicole Ishida as Rio, Haruka’s friend and the owner of a snack bar in town, was a nice addition and I loved how she kept advancing her knowledge of the Bakumatsu era with different books (from Monkey to Elementary Student to High School Student).
Tumblr media
(^^ Don’t mess with the “Tiger of North Azuma!”)
The continuity of the drama had me a little confused at points.  Like, why did Takechi make such a big fuss about Komiyama (Zen Kajihara), Haruka’s boss, sexually harassing her by patting her on the butt in the second episode, but then, didn’t do anything when Komiyama did it again to Haruka later on?? Takechi was almost going to kill Komiyama (which I wouldn’t blame him) for the pervert act, but didn’t even notice that he still kept doing it (even when they were in the same room).  Also, I know this drama is called “Samurai Sensei,” but there are only a couple of scenes where we see Takechi actually teaching the students.  The other times, he’s helping the people in town or off with Ryoma.
Tumblr media
(^^Um…where have you been, Takechi?)
The ending tried to tie up all loose ends, but it still left me with a “huh?” feeling. So…Takechi couldn’t time slip back to his era (otherwise, he would be dead), so he just stayed in the same town? Weren’t the police looking for him though? How did everything get wrapped up so nicely? It’s best not to think about these things and enjoy the drama for what it was—a simple story about a samurai time traveling to modern day Japan…okay, maybe that’s not so simple.
Favorites: Favorite Character: Saeki-dono was so nice! We did end up finding out in the last episode why he took in Takechi and didn’t think he was lying, but he was just so kind and understanding.   Toranosuke and Rio were a couple of my favorites, too.  Favorite Episode: I liked episode 4 where we found out the truth about Toranosuke’s girlfriend, Sachiko (Yuina Kuroshima).  Chori~su! Favorite Scene: Any time Takechi encountered something new about the modern day.  He even sat in cars traditionally (with his feet tucked in) and everyone questioned it XD
Tumblr media
(^^ Why are you still sitting in the car like that, Takechi??)
“Samurai Sensei”  Rating: Story: ✭✭½ The comedy made it enjoyable, but the story lacked continuity. Acting: ✭✭✭ Great cast! Theme Song: ✭✭✭✭ A slow but beautiful song by Kanjani8:) Total: 9.5/15
Next Up: “Kazoku Game”
Tumblr media
(^^ “Back to the Samurai!”)

Spring 2021 Original TV Anime Bakuten!! 2nd PV Introduces OP Theme by Centimillimental
Along with a new key visual, the official website for the upcoming original TV anime Bakuten!! has posted a 70-second second PV introducing its OP theme song "Seishun no Enbu" (Dance Performance of Youth) performed by Atsushi Onushi's solo project Centimillimental.
The clip also introduces the six members of the men's rhythmic gymnastics club at a high school attached to Hakumei Private University, also known as Shiro-kou. They are the rival club of the protagonist team at Soshukan Private High School, known as Ao-kou.
    Message from Centimillimental:
Centimillimental has sung about the pain of separation, the view of life and death within oneself, and contradictions so far. This time, "Bakuten!!" which I will be in charge of the OP theme, is a slightly different worldview, depicting the glimmer of adolescence where the characters join forces with their friends and earnestly take on challenges. This is also a challenge for me, so to speak, "Bakuten!!" (literally means back handspring in Japanese). I want to jump around in the dazzling world of challenges with them, and see the scenery when I land on my feet again.
