Text and picture tokens have different gpt-image-1 costs:
$5 per million prompt text input tokens
$10 for 1 million photo input tokens
Image production tokens: $40 per million.
This amounts to $0.02, $0.07, and $0.19 per square image for low-, medium-, and high-quality images.

According to a report from The Information, OpenAI’s internal study projects that the company will generate $100 billion in revenue by 2029 — a staggering figure, especially considering it expects to bring in just $3.7 billion in 2024. This immense growth hinges on increasing the prices of premium subscriptions over the next few years.
Rising subscription costs. To reach those revenue goals, OpenAI plans to raise the price of its premium services. For instance, the ChatGPT Plus subscription, which currently costs $20, could rise to $44 within five years.
Massive losses in the meantime. The revenue forecast for 2024 pales in comparison to the projected losses. OpenAI is expected to lose $5 billion in 2024 alone, with those losses set to grow.
$14 billion in losses by 2026. According to internal projections, OpenAI’s losses will continue to swell, reaching $14 billion in 2026 — nearly three times the expected 2024 losses. These growing deficits will undoubtedly test the patience of investors.
$44 billion in losses by 2028. As noted by The Information editor Stephanie Palazzolo, OpenAI estimates that from 2023 to 2028, its total losses will amount to $44 billion, nearing what Meta has lost with its metaverse investments.
A risky bet for investors. Despite these daunting numbers, investors seem optimistic about OpenAI’s future. This confidence is reflected in the recent $6.6 billion funding round, which saw more demand from investors than OpenAI could accommodate. Notably, these investors didn’t acquire equity in OpenAI; instead, they secured rights to a share of the company’s future profits.
Microsoft’s share of future profits. If OpenAI does become profitable, Microsoft stands to earn 20% of those revenues. This reflects Microsoft’s significant backing of OpenAI, having invested over $13 billion, primarily in Azure cloud credits for OpenAI’s AI infrastructure.
The future remains uncertain. OpenAI’s projections, though ambitious, are just that — projections. The future of AI adoption and monetization is still unclear, and it remains to be seen whether users and industries will embrace and pay for AI at the scale that OpenAI and its investors hope. For now, uncertainty looms large over the company’s path to profitability.
