#baahubali is tollywood not Bollywood
Text
Attention: just because Netflix only has the Hindi dubs of some South Indian Films, that doesn’t make it Bollywood!!! If it was made in south India, it’s a South Indian film and should be referred to by the name used for films from its respective location/language, ex tollywood, sandalwood, etc.

Baahubali is the kind of movie that hollywood is too fucking scared to make. not an ironic bone in its body, no jokes, no ironic detachment, no self-awareness or lampshading, simply an Epic story being told completely straight. No pretense of realism or being grounded, it lives in the realm of myth, telling tales of larger-than-life heroes performing epic feats. there is so much movie in that movie and it is completely unashamed to be what it is. American movies sometimes almost feel embarrassed by their own subjects, and I’m fucking sick of it

Hi! 👋 You have nice taste in movies. I saw a handful of Bollywood films on your blog, could you recommend some of your favorites?
Oh my, hi, thank you??
Of course! Disclaimer : I just started getting into Indian cinema this year and I still have a lot to learn and discover.
My first Bollywood movie was Devdas (2002, dir Sanjay Leela Bhansali) with Shah Rukh Khan (remember that name if you're interested in Indian cinema, he's like THE biggest star of the country). It's a period romantic drama film and I basically cried non stop for two hours. The colours! The songs! Aaaaaaaaaaaaah
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, like a lot of people last year, RRR (2022, dir S. S. Rajamouli). That's technically Tollywood (still Indian cinema, just different region and language). Epic period action drama film. It's.... so good? Like no joke my life changed after watching that movie. It's got action, it's got love, it's got incredible music (my top Spotify last year was just the songs of this movie), it's got everything.
Tbh you can watch all of Rajamouli's movies, I think you're safe with them. Baahubali Part 1 and 2 are amazing, Magadheera maybe aged a little bit (very 2000s, painfully 2000s) but is still great. I haven't watched Eega yet but really can't wait, the plot is too weird, I have to.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For something more modern, I absolutly loved Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023, dir Karan Johar). Back to Bollywood, it's a romantic comedy family drama. From what I understood, the plot is very basic for an Indian movie, forbidden love, evil grandma, respect of traditions etc etc but as I said, I'm new to all of this, and it was amazing. So, so funny. If you like himbos you'll love the main guy, he's perfect. He says stuff like "Gucci and Prada made love and gave birth to me" or "she's a super woman Wonder Woman Wakanda forever", I love him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you'll like these! Thank you again for asking I could talk about these movies for days <3

I know it’s been said before by south Asian bloggers (which I am not: disclaimer), but Imma say it again! Rajamouli’s films are NOT Bollywood, they are Tollywood! His films seem to be some of the very few Tollywood films that wider western audiences (including myself) have heard of/have maybe watched, and I understand the confusion because Netflix only has the Hindi dubs, but they were written, filmed, and produced in Telugu originally! So if you enjoyed Baahubali/Baahubali 2, or RRR, that’s great! If you found it through Netflix and watched it in the Hindi dub, that’s still good! It’s good to see south Asian films and filmmakers getting recognition on a worldwide stage! But please don’t call it Bollywood, because it’s not!
Bollywood is the North Indian film industry, with movies made in Hindi, and has enjoyed some level of commercial success in the west for quite a while now! But there are many other film industries in India, specifically in the south, and those are NOT Bollywood. The north and south of India has some pretty significant linguistic and cultural differences. They are very proud of their heritage and their culture and traditions, and they have every right to be! And they also have every right not to see it lumped in with north India’s own culture and traditions, because those are different!!!

There are many famous directors in the Telugu film industry. But SS Rajamouli is remembered as the director who brought global recognition to Telugu cinema. He first started his journey as a TV serial director and got introduced to Tollywood as a director with the movie 'Student No.1' (2001) starring Junior NTR. Although the film was a huge success, Rajamouli's talent did not get the recognition it deserved due to Raghavendra Rao directing the film.
'Baahubali-1' and 'Baahubali-2' brought global recognition to Telugu cinema. Until then, Rajamouli made everyone look at Tollywood by dispelling the idea that Indian cinema only meant Bollywood. And much less can be said about Rajamouli's 'RRR' with NTR and Ram Charan as heroes. 'RRR' has got recognition like no other Indian movie in the world. Hollywood celebrities also fell in love with this film. It is said that this film deserves to receive Oscar awards in many categories. Rajamouli has also started a campaign for nominations in 15 categories to make this film stand in the Oscar ring. It can be said that if 'RRR' stands in the Oscar nominations as expected by everyone, it will be a source of pride not only for Rajamouli and the Telugu film industry, but for the Indian film industry as well.
Rajamouli has directed 12 films so far and all of them have been successful. He is going to do his next film with Mahesh Babu. It will be made with the highest budget in Rajamouli's career. Once upon a time Rajamouli's film was only awaited by the Telugu audience. After 'Baahubali', the audience across the country waited. There is no doubt that from now on, his film will be of great interest among movie lovers all over the world. And it remains to be seen what kind of wonders Rajamouli will create with his film with Mahesh.
Today (October 10) is Rajamouli's birthday
