Boomers' parents nuked Japan which spurned the baby boom.
The BOOMer generation basically owes its existence to the nuclear bomb.
In David Lynch's Return of Twin Peaks episode 8, the first atomic explosion at White Sands unleashes a powerful malevolent evil force (BOB) upon the world.
This actually happened in real life but the cosmic evil that was unleashed was the Boomer generation.
Boomers keep saying they want to nuke everything : r/BoomersBeingFools (reddit.com)

Baby Boomers had a cinnamon challenge they won’t talk about that may be the reason why toothpick-chewers in classic movies are seen as cool
My mother is 65 and right bang in the middle of the Baby Boomer generation, but she’s very cool and does her best to be and stay woke, keep up with shifts in vernacular, and takes care to do things like make sure she’s strict with getting pronouns correct, etc. Her meme game is a little lagging, and she only just discovered the cinnamon challenge. I was surprised to see her... not surprised. If anything, she seemed a bit pleased and said, “Yep, kids are still kids.”
I stared at her for a while. “What do you mean?” I asked her. She’s seen other ancient memes like planking and never had that reaction before. Seeing the cinnamon challenge was downright satisfying to her.
She looked me dead in the face and said, “Sweetheart, I grew up in a time when you could get crystal meth over the counter at the pharmacy. They were called diet pills then.”
“Whaaaaaaat.” I knew that Nazi Germany passed meth around like candy, but that was in the 30′s and 40′s. I had just figured it had been prohibited already in America by the time my mom was growing up. “Did you have a cinnamon challenge or something in school?” I finally asked.
She half-nodded and half-shrugged and said, “Similar. You couldn’t have candy or gum in school when I was growing up. It was about 1969 in San Francisco and parents were starting to limit cigarette smoking to kids under 18, too, so a lot of my school friends were squirming all day long with nothing to at least chew on.”
“What did they do instead, mom?” I asked suspiciously, because she would not bring this subject up after I had explained to her that the cinnamon challenge was dangerous because of how horrible it is to accidentally inhale it into your airways.
“Well... Back when I was in school, you could get cinnamon extract from the pharmacy. It was just cinnamon suspended in canola oil, and you could use it for cooking or treating a skin fungus. Stuff like that,” she explained. “So the boys at my school would take toothpicks and dip them in the cinnamon extract. That’s why chewing on a toothpick was so common back then. If you were trying to quit smoking or couldn’t have chewing gum, you could carry a little bottle of flavor extract about the size of a bottle of nail polish in your pocket and dip a toothpick in it. Then you’d have something to chew on that the teachers hadn’t banned, and you could hide them in your cheek easily.”
“So what did the boys at your school get into, mother?” I asked again. We were still on the topic of ridiculous memes. This had to go somewhere.
She smirked. “Well, after a while, the boys started noticing that the cinnamon extract from the pharmacy was spicy. It burned. So it started to get to be a challenge to see how many cinnamon toothpicks you could hold in your mouth at once. It got so bad that kids would get blisters and burns on their mouths from it, and you could tell if someone had a few of them tucked in their cheek in class because their face would turn red from the neck up like a cartoon.”
“Why have I never heard about this?”
She wasn’t done. “Finally, the teachers figured out what everyone was doing and it became a pretty big deal. Cinnamon extract started getting banned or restricted to adults. Then they banned toothpicks for sale to anyone under 18, too. That’s why it was a sign of being cool, particularly among guys, to walk around with a toothpick in your mouth. It either meant you had a fake ID or that you were 18.”
I stared at her for a long time. “Mom, why didn’t they just use hot sauce? It was California. Didn’t you have peppers?”
Without missing a beat, my 65-year-old mother replied, “Honey, we were white as fuck.”

The fact that Dave Filoni called Anakin “the greatest Jedi ever” is proof that he’s bias AF. His anti-Jedi rhetoric is bupkis.
I wonder if he means "the greatest" in terms of in-universe fame...?
Dunno if this is the case in Canon (then again Dave Filoni blatantly ignores any *non-motion* transmedia elements in Canon so meh), but in Legends he's:
"Anakin Skywalker, the Hero with no Fear™, handsome, dashing, the face of the Republic's army during the Clone War, the only Jedi who tried to resist the nefarious Order's coup and was treacherously murdered for it".
And I seem to remember that, in Canon, he's like the Jedi Temple's superstar anyway, every Jedi recognizes him on sight. I mean, that line from Baylon about "Anakin speaking highly of Ahsoka" must have some meaning beyond artificial personal stakes.
So from a fame and a "power level" standpoint... sure.
He's the greatest.
I'm giving Filoni the benefit of the doubt.
While I've talked about why Filoni's entire headcanon about the Jedi doesn't track with what George Lucas' intended narrative, I think it's worth acknowledging that Filoni's bias comes from part of his duties while directing The Clone Wars was.
One of the goals of TCW was humanizing Anakin, expanding upon his character make him go from "a character whose only purposes is to embody the themes presented in three movies based on the matinee serial format" to a relatable person, a good man, the hero Ben mentions to Luke in A New Hope.
I think it's normal that he'll see Anakin in a more positive light.
Also (and full disclosure this is just me theorizing I am no authority on any of this so if turns out I'm wrong just come right out and say so)...
I'm pretty sure that Filoni, Lesley Headland and most of the recent Star Wars authors are all Gen X, raised by baby boomers forced to conform to society, obey authority and have proper decorum (boys don't cry!) all of which they strove to rebel against. Add to that the corruption they witnessed growing up and coming out of high school, and you see a kind of jadedness emerge. "The rules aren't as black and white, the world is grey."
So while most of them and the boomers despised the Prequels upon release, a few of them projected a more individualistic headcanon onto those movies that fit with where their head was, at the time.
As such: Anakin isn't interpreted by them as a cautionary tale about what happens when you're greedy. He's a misunderstood rebel, a non-conformist who has his flaws but is ultimately good at heart. Which isn't entirely inaccurate, but it is very clearly an embellishment of a character who will one day become a space nazi.
The fact is... the Prequels were made by a boomer. One with very liberal values and who was himself a rebel, but a boomer all the same. The whole point of his story is...
"we all must come together and fight as one, if push comes to shove; we must all be compassionate and selfless if we are to survive; don't be greedy, let people go when it's their time to leave".
And then he makes the Jedi say that, making them beacons of truth and good and compassion in his fairy tale, now aimed at Gen Z kids.
Gen X-ers hear/read that and project all the boomer BS they had been told onto the Jedi...
"oh, so the Jedi are saying you shouldn't love yourself, you shouldn't be yourself, you should give up on what makes you an individual to fit in, you shouldn't feel any emotions"
Because nobody is that good, realistically, right?
This happened in other mediums. The one that comes to mind on the spot is the relationship between Mufasa and Scar.
In The Lion King, Mufasa is strong and noble, Scar is weak and conniving. Simple enough. Around that same time, in A Tale of Two Brothers, young Mufasa is shown to be pretty nice with Taka (Scar), who is framed as a spoiled brat to begin with.
Skip to the 2019 remake, and it's hinted Mufasa gave Scar his wound, and in The Lion Guard they explain that Scar got his nickname from Mufasa mocking him for a misadventure.
He went from being a noble king to a bully who had it coming, Scar is an underdog who got picked on. Because again: nobody is that pure, right? Fairytales be-damned.
Nothing is black and white, it's all grey.
So yeah, long story short I do think that Filoni being part of the generation that wasn't the target demographic but was old enough to retcon the crap out of the Prequels also plays a role into his view of Anakin.

Barn Anon. In my defence, it's not yet Feb. I promise I have a happier one after this one. Wanted to explore the Warp fuckery or rather those that are "immune" to it. :)
You wanted to scream, want to grab your aunt and yell at her that she's crazy. That... thing that she's brought to the family reunion... It doesn't belong here! It's not even human, nor is it a pet like a dog or a cat. Why is everyone so calm? why is everyone smiling? Don't they see how it's armed to the teeth? Don't they see that chainsaw sword thing that it carries around with it? Doesn't anyone notice how it's sharp edges have some dried bloodstains?
You politely excuse yourself and rush out of the house to stand at the back porch. Deep breaths. In. Out. You look out at the single tree that grows at the back, the stars that dot the sky. You manage to come back down from the emotions that threatened to overwhelm you. Laughter creeps out from the house, you see that…thing acting all shy and bashful and you feel like throwing up. Does no one else see that thing for the danger it is? The majority of the world seems to be the same regardless of location or culture. You've seen the pictures and videos of people around the globe with their Space Marines and how everyone else would comment how they wish they had a Space Marine of their own. Just last week your friend was excitedly showing you a video of a guy and his Space Marine summitting some mountain together, with the guy excitedly hugging his Space Marine.
The only comfort you have is that you aren't alone. There's others that see the true danger of these Space Marines. It's a small minority and there are few spaces online that you can talk about it. This small community has a theory that Space Marines must have some form of mind control or that they plan to overthrow humanity. It didn't matter to you if you agreed to those theories, you're just relieved to find others that understand. You know you can't tell your parents, oh god no. They'll think you're crazy or worse, some sort of conspiracy theorist or extremist. You're not crazy! I-It's them that's insane, they're the ones that need help.
You open the chatroom start typing away, venting to like-minded sane individuals. You know you're right. Your family is in danger, they just can't see it yet but you can save them. They'll thank you in the end. You'll find a way to get rid of that Space Marine, somehow.
Thank you for feeding into my weird idea about how it is just a bit of warp fuckery cuz lets be honest no one would just do what the husbandry tag does unless it's some sort of warp fuckery.
Besides I'm always a lover of the Eldritch (Also you cannot tell me as a Catholic that biblically accurate angels aren't some sort of eldritch abominations straight out of Lovecraft just with more fire and feathers motif vs oceanic) and to imply something is just wrong under the surface is my jam
How can people not see that these things aren't normal?!
You do your research finding old and you mean old newspapers from the 20's and there is nothing about Astartes at all. Up until the 40's where suddenly there are pictures of them... some of them being seen in old war videos.
Some theorize that that Nazi Occultism brought them here but they are all beyond our petty conflicts as seen with the futile attempt there was to bring them into the Korean war. They only cared about their "companions". There use to be so much more uproar in papers about them but once the baby boomers were born that's suddenly when everyone was okay with them. Only the people in the Silent Generation and the GI generation were complaining about the Astartes and then suddenly their children or grandchildren were okay with them.
You continue to read as the generations went on... Gen X and Millennials saw the least amount of pushback... Millennials it was considered weird to have the opinion you have now. You run your fingers through your hair looking at the newspaper articles as you now realize that Gen z and Gen Alpha will only grow up with "positive" connotations.
Gone were the idea that only Loyalist astartes were safe to own and then it moved to include renegades and unaligned. You shudder at the thought of your cousin with a Khornite living with them. They're going to die you've tried to warn them but you worry their Astarte might know what's up... they are so much smarter. You pale seeing an old guide about a Blood Angel going into a rage... you shutter at the article.
Your parents are talking about getting one but you managed to convince them that they can get one once you move out. You read the chat and how someone's posted about how a kid was recently abducted by one... or another about how some Gen Alpha kids can even speak their language... and then the theory about bonding that seems to come up when the kids explain their space marine... oh great a wild idea that you get chosen and have no choice in the matter.
You look behind you as you make your way home late trying to desperately avoid the dark alleyways and crossing the road when you see people walking with their Astartes. You've already found out nice communities that don't allow Astartes to live there so you can get away from the madness.

I don't know what happens when people hit the point of no return, but I heartily dislike it. Why are my partner and I closeted around my family?
Because. My mom is an ally, as long as it's not her babies. My father believed that anyone who isn't gay or straight is an "AIDS Monkey". But they are only Gen X. They were always like this.
My favorite uncle growing up was badass born on the back end of the Boomer generation. He looked like a biker version of the Comic Book Guy. We used to talk for hours about superheroes and movies and metal music. When I was little, there were great big bear hugs. He was the sweetest most open minded guy when I was growing up, and I related most to him. Then COVID hit.
His long hair is cut short. He dons a don't tread on me cap. Hours of Star Wars and Batman conversation is replaced with Fox News. My "husband" looks at me as if to say, "Was this the guy you were telling me about?" I honestly don't know anymore.
This morning I scrolled Facebook just because, and found this.
Tumblr media
It was like a boot to the chest from someone you used to hold up high on a pedestal.
How can anyone in their right mind compare my community, one where people still hide from family, to NAZIS???? How are people trying to teach inclusivity to children anything like training youth to be as exclusive and hateful to the point where even the symbology they bastardized is a feared and ugly symbol. (It was originally meant to symbolize a sun. I had to look it up when I was younger).
The Nazis persecuted different faiths like my friends, the disabled like me, and the queer like my drag queen male passing "husband" and my pansexual genderfluid ass. Like our bridesmaid who wasn't always the maid she wanted to be. Like my baby sister who is bi and nonconforming.
I don't get it. Our flag welcomes all. Their flag killed anyone who was deemed lesser. Please tell me Uncle, how are we the same for teaching the children this?
I fear growing older, because I do not want to become as ugly in my heart as the old are to anyone different.

My Review of Peter Pan no Bouken
Tumblr media
Nearing the end of watching Little Lord Fauntleroy, instead of airing the preview for the next episode there was a preview for an upcoming anime that was going to air in it’s current timeslot. When you watch these World Masterpiece Theater animes in their original video format, you come upon that. In the past, I saw previews for other series I have yet to watch like Heidi and The Bush Babies. What do we have here this time?
Tumblr media
Peter Pan?!
Peter Pan is an anime?! For real?! Okay, we’re watching this.
All I can say is, who hasn’t heard of Peter Pan? How many movies and television shows have been made that was loosely based off this fairy tale? Too many to count! Hook, Finding Neverland, Pan, Walt Disney’s Peter Pan, Peter Pan starring Mary Martin, Tinkerbell, the live-action Peter Pan in 2003, Return to Neverland, Chip n’ Dale Rescue Rangers, Peter Pan and the Pirates on FOX Kids, Once Upon a Time…It’s just endless! Add to that a new Disney live-action reboot to the tale starring Jude Law. So, this story is never going to die. And it shouldn’t! I grew up with the story. I’ve watched several plays. I’ve seen many movie adaptations. Because I have a boomer parent, I watched the Mary Martin Broadway version. But as we all know, the one I know front-to-back would be Walt Disney’s 1953 animated feature film starring Bobby Driscoll, Hans Conried, and Katherine Beaumont.
Tumblr media
I know this film is canceled eight ways from Sunday and I don’t care. Disney+ has advisory notices everywhere with this one. And if I’m not mistaking, if you’re under 7 on Disney+, you’re not even allowed to watch this without parental permission. I’ll save the bitching about that for a different day. I liked this film. Disney’s Peter Pan is one of my guilty pleasures despite outdated stereotypes and major sexism. At least I know the Japanese version won’t sing a song called, “What Makes the Red Man Red”. I’m curious to see Japan’s take on this tale as these World Masterpiece Theater classics seem to be very accurate in their telling of the stories. And they’ve got 41 episodes to do so.
I do have to wonder though. Aren’t the main characters of the World Masterpiece Theater animes supposed to deal with heavy subject matter? The Darling children have it easy compared to nearly every other character from the other animes. They’re not orphaned. They’re not put to work in slave conditions. They're not escaping Nazis. Their home was not burned to the ground by Confederate soldiers. That’s a foreshadow to what I watch after Peter Pan. These kids get to hang out in Neverland with a boy that never grew up. Then again, it is a literary classic and I suppose they wanted to change things up with a more light-hearted story.
Tumblr media
The story was created by Scottish playwright/novelist J.M. Barrie. Peter Pan is the story about a free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows older. Peter Pan lives in Neverland with a fairy named Tinkerbell. He spends his days hanging with other kids who didn’t grow up named the lost boys, conversing with the mermaids, dodging danger from the Indians, and occasionally fighting against the notorious pirate, Captain Hook.
Tumblr media
But as we all know the story truly begins with the Darling family. Wendy, John, and Michael Darling are spirited children who are well taken care of by their loving and strict parents and a watchful dog named Nana. The children have recently been having dreams about the titular character. It’s an uncommon phenomenon for children their age to dream about a boy that never ages named Peter Pan. It’s just that there’s no book to prove his existence. But Peter Pan has found a fascination with the Darling household and shows up several times. After losing his shadow, Peter ends up meeting Wendy, John, and Michael. Peter tells them all about the place he lives, Neverland. Next thing you know, they’re covered in pixie dust and they’re flying from the UK all the way to Neverland.
Tumblr media
Here, Wendy and her brothers spend their time hanging out with the lost boys, conversing with the mermaids, dodging danger from the Indians, and…okay, you get the idea. The Darling children are getting the Neverland experience.
BETWEEN THE DUB AND THE SUB: You ain’t gonna believe this. This anime has a dub. Not just one, but two dubs. In 1993, Sky One in the UK aired this anime (under the name Peter Pan: The Animated Series) and gave it a dub. Not to be confused with the other shows that went as Peter Pan: The Animated Series. This, I’m okay with. Real British people voicing real British characters. Thank you! Yeah, I praise that here, but when the UK dubs for Crayon Shin Chan and Urusei Yatsura, I make cringe faces. The other dub was done by Saban. Wow, how dated can you get with that company? Due to the limited data, I can’t really talk about the dub here. As usual, we get a few veterans from the World Masterpiece Theater animes and a few well-known voice actors early in their career. One more addition, it’s quite clever that Chiako Otsuka not only played Captain Hook here, but he was also the Japanese dub voice for many Disney movies that feature Hook (as well as some of the Kingdom Hearts games) and continued to do so before passing away several years ago. The more we know!
*Peter Pan is played by Noriko Hidaka (known for Kikyo on InuYasha, Akane on Ranma ½, Near on Death Note, Soujirou on Rurouni Kenshin, Ursula on Little Witch Academia, and Bellemire on One Piece)
*Wendy is played by Naoko Matsui (known for Misora on Death Note, Noriko on Itazura na Kiss, Monet on One Piece, Shikamaru’s mother on Naruto, and Bridget on Little Lord Fauntleroy)
*John is played by Kyouko Hamura
*Michael is played by Yuriko Fuchizaki (known for Anthy on Revolutionary Girl Utena, Hiro on Fruits Basket, Cyprine on Sailor Moon S, and Megumi on Ah My Goddess)
*Tinkerbell is played by Sumi Shimamoto (known for Ishizu on YGO, Kanata on Lucky Star, Sara on Princess Sara, and Mitsuba on Gintama)
*Captain Hook is played by Chiako Otsuka (known for Gol D. Roger on One Piece, Arthur on Hellsing, and Tao Pai Pai on Dragon Ball) [R.I.P.]
SHIPPING: Wait…what?! There should be no talk of shipping here.
Oh, but in episode six John has a crush on Tiger Lily. And then John continues to be all blushy around her throughout the series.
Tumblr media
John and Tiger Lily? What sick fan-fiction tripe is this?! I’ve never seen any poppycock related to what I just wrote anywhere. Tiger Lily is supposed to have a crush on Peter and hate Wendy. Not on a yandere level like Tinkerbell, but still. Japan, do better!
To be honest, there is one ship I support in the Peter Pan universe and no, it is not Peter Pan x Wendy. That was never something I supported, not even as a kid.
Tumblr media
I actually support Captain Hook x the crocodile. Yes, I am pro this. Even three-year old me would support this.
ACCURATE OR NOT: Time to see if this adaptation stacks up well compared to the original source material.
Tumblr media
*This adaptation has fewer Lost Boys. Many of the adaptations are pretty loose when it comes to the lost boys in terms of how many there are and their names. Originally, there were six. So, we seem to be missing Nibs and the twins. I guess that’s one thing Disney’s Peter Pan got right and they didn’t even say their names.
Tumblr media
*Not sure if all of these places in Neverland truly existed in the original text. Because here, it feels like there are a lot of places that even Peter Pan has never heard of or been to. Pretty sure Peter Pan has been in Neverland since God farted out the solar system. So, why would he question any part of the land he’s lived in his whole life? And don’t get me started on Tinkerbell’s situation. That’s a fairy-hole I don’t feel like traveling down.
Tumblr media
*There was potential of a really threatening antagonist for this series with Darkness and her ambitions of stealing dreams from children. And it’s up to her granddaughter Luna to save this woman and show her the right way. Too bad Darkness and Luna do not exist in the original material. Hey, if this series is gonna be 41 episodes, you’ve gotta stretch it out as much as possible.
Tumblr media
*Yeah, little Rascal here doesn’t exist outside the anime. Just like every other cute animal featured in these animes. Okay, go join the rest of the animals like Chouchou, Milky Ann, Piccolo, and Caesar that never existed.
Tumblr media
*Mama Hook. Surely, she existed. I mean, Hook was originally a fellow who studied at the best schools of England including Eton and Oxford. It’s just that I don’t think she was ever mentioned in the novel. Other adaptations, very rarely. Even Disney didn’t have a Mama Hook until 2011 where they got Sharon Osbourne of all people. In the anime, it is always implied that Hook’s mother passed away, but he loves her so dearly. Every so often, he will talk about her.
Tumblr media
THIS GODDAMN ANIMATION: I swore I would never yell about the Nippon animation for the World Masterpiece Theater collection. And it’s great that many of the Nippon animators went on to do greater pieces including movies for Studio Ghibli. But I can’t hold it in with this one. This is just bad. The animation quality went down after Little Lord Fauntleroy and it really shows. I keep wanting to wipe away Peter Pan’s mouth because I think he has a chocolate milk stain. And this might be bias on my part, but most of the Captain Hooks I’ve watched were (for a lack of a better term) PILFs. This Captain Hook looks like he belongs in that Oingo Boingo ending theme from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Pt. 3.
Tumblr media
ENDING: Depending on what Peter Pan adaptation you watch; chances are the ending will be different. Some will end with the Darling children back home with their parents, some end with the Darling children bringing the Lost Boys with them back home, and other endings show the future where Wendy is all grown up with her daughter Jane. And most of the non-Disney live-action ones will do something way out of left field, I turn off the TV in disgust and howl at the moon.
While I’m on a tangent, why did Pan have a scene where they’re singing Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit?
Tumblr media
While most adaptations will showcase a Peter Pan vs. Captain Hook showdown, this series has Darkness and Luna. Darkness has plans for her granddaughter and Neverland. She plans to use this Black Mirror that will destroy Neverland. But of course, Darkness is too old to carry out anything and is missing a few things to make this come true. That’s where Luna comes in as she tries to groom her to become her successor. Luna has been hesitant and defiant against doing her grandmother’s bidding. Unfortunately, things do not go well when Captain Hook and the pirates get involved in this family squabble as well. Peter Pan and Wendy are friends with Luna and help her when she’s around, so yeah, they’re caught up in this mess too.
Tumblr media
The pet raccoon Rascal was holding this special key that Darkness needs to make her dream into a nightmarish reality. Once everything was in place, Darkness was able to use her granddaughter’s body as a vessel in order to take over. The Luna that Peter and Wendy knew no longer exists. She’s out to destroy Neverland. Captain Hook is one for destruction, but even he knows to not fuck with the natural order of Neverland. Thankfully, Wendy was able to break through to Luna. The black mirror that Darkness has been harping about for several episodes is now the white mirror and peace can continue across the land. Okay, we’re at the final episode at this point. Is that all?
Tumblr media
Wendy and her brothers feel like their time in Neverland is over after everything that has just happened. Yeah, just randomly bring up going home now. Absolutely no talks about leaving prior to this moment. Sure, they mention their lives in London every now and then while in Neverland but never talked about wanting to return. In this version, Wendy, John, and Michael leave without bringing back the lost boys.
Tumblr media
After returning from Neverland, Wendy and the boys would always remember their time in Neverland…at first. In time, they will gradually forget what transpired there until it felt like nothing more than a dream. Peter promised to come visit. But days turn to weeks. Weeks to months, months to years. But one night, many years later, Peter Pan returns to the nursery to find Wendy’s daughter Jane. Better late than never!
Ehhh…not my favorite Peter Pan adaptation and right now my least favorite of the World Masterpiece Theater collection. I think for me, when it comes to Peter Pan, I prefer it to be in movie form and not a 41-episode trilogy. Frankly, this series bored me more than you would think. The addition this anime made with the black mirror, Darkness, and Luna piqued my interest slightly. It’s new to the Peter Pan story and stepping into unfamiliar territory, but it caught my attention for a short while. But to be blunt, I would rather stick to the movies I’ve grown up to enjoy.
Does that mean you’ll watch Disney’s latest Peter Pan & Wendy now?
Fuck naw. Disney can suck on a huge tray of dicks with their live-action reboots. After what they did to The Lion King, I wash my hands of that.
But if you are curious about the Peter Pan anime…good luck finding it.
Now that Peter Pan is over, it’s time I pick up another World Masterpiece Theater classic where we go back to America.

During the wave of the Great Depression, Americans persevered by finding affordable, family-friendly means of entertainment and recreation. The 1930s was also a time that bore timeless, iconic pop culture that audiences today cherish and reinvent for contemporary tastes and ideals. Film, board games, comics and magazines were created during this time period — some names remain as favorites across generations. Despite the dread and despair of the Depression, there were many joyful, colorful, and rich colors that represented the era, which represented how Americans kept magic in everyday life.

The government had to keep civic and military morale uplifted during the war and rationing. Propaganda posters adopted a rich patriotic palette and promoted a cheerful and romantic sense of duty in the populace. Willie Gillis, a character invented by Rockwell, is a humorous and likable archetype of the all-American drafted soldier. Willie Gillis’s is brighter and cheerier than the more neutral palettes that appeared elsewhere. Primary colors such as blue, navy, red, and yellow were widely used alongside muted military colors such as olive, brown, and tan. Due to rationing, wartime fashion became more minimalistic and pragmatic. In the world of entertainment, adults and children saw movies, cartoons, and comic books that espoused pro-America messages to garner more support for the war. In “Der Fuehrer’s Face”, a wartime propaganda short by Disney released in 1943, Donald Duck dreams of his life being controlled by the Nazis, set in somber, muted and muddy tones of green, brown and yellow.

During the 1950s, America came home. Soldiers returning from World War II attended college, bought homes and started families. Another decade of American consumerism, glamor and prosperity swept the nation. Advertisers created razor-sharp campaigns for different family members: mothers, fathers and the newly-created age group: teenagers. Powdery pastels became fashionable and associated with American housewives to convey youth, warmth and joy. Fashion, cars, graphic design, furniture, and decor design were all seeping with delicate pinks, blues, and greens. In the 1950s, you could even buy colored toilet paper. The end of World War II sparked a calm and soothing need for many Americans. This decade showed a love of pastel colors, an array of softer hues to appeal to the American housewife and teenagers. Pastels could be seen in the home, fashion, and even the automobile industry.

Concept of keywords-
Keith Haring
An idea or concept covered during the semester of contemporary art is the concept of keywords, with reference to New keywords : a revised vocabulary of culture and society (Blackwell Pub, 2005) our lecture covered the importance of keywords within contemporary culture and art.The public's understanding of what culture, society or even terms such as criticism actually mean shape how art is viewed as naturally, modern art reflects the present society it operates in. The definition of terms dynamic, changing through time and generations words transform to have new meanings and context. The meaning of feminism, democracy, pornography, orientalism or gay and lesbian are used differently now in comparison to the first vocabulary of culture by Ray Williams in 1976. We did an exercise of picking a random keyword out of a hat, choosing that to expand on and then repeating this choosing an artist to link to the words. I focused on the terms ‘Aesthetics’ and ‘Generation’ linked to Keith Haring. In my opinion, an understanding of keywords in relation to 2024 and in relation to contemporary art history is needed in order to write about art, curate or critique it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aesthetics is the focus on the appearance of things, and the idea of beautification in relation to art. The importance of how something looks above meaning or other factors. It could be linked to different movements with an ‘Abstract aesthetic’ for example. In terms of Haring’s art, I focused on his piece Safe Sex! Which is very visually bold, grabbing a viewer's attention with sexual imagery, using the aesthetics of pop art and street style. Haring's links to graffiti are evident through free art, as Haring began his career by drawing figures in chalk on the subway, the 1980’s artists were starting the blur the differentiations of high and low art as street art gained attention as a political movement, which is still a large association of graffiti today.  The piece is purposefully not beautified in order to fulfil the intentions of spreading awareness for using protection, but the animated penis is humorous despite the dark subject matter. Currently, Haring’s art style is largely advertised and commercialized, therefore would be recognised as his own aesthetic as his art style is linear and graphic, the bold colours and lines are distinctly Keith Haring. The artist made his work highly accessible to the masses as through his shop ‘the Pop Shop’ in 1986 he subverted elitist art ideals of exclusion, allowing his art to be worn and displayed cheaply while advocating for social change. This came with much criticism, as while his art took strong political stances against the Apartheid, Reagan and oppression of LGBT people, Haring eagerly took to consumerism selling jackets for $350 most of his audience would not be able to afford. His aesthetic today is apparent through the Kieth Haring Foundation, which collaborates with converses, H&M, Addidas etc., making $10 in revenue from morally questionable companies. The Haring art that is most shown is often un-political, making it more digestible despite his aims of strong sexual and clear imagery, such as Silence Equals Death (1989)depicting the pink triangle and people in pain, the badge homosexuals were made to wear in Nazi concentration camps.

The key term generation evokes everyone living in a specific period, for example ‘baby boomers’ born in around 1946-1964 are a group stereotyped to be obsessed with working and holding traditional/conservative beliefs, with generational differences compared to younger people such as Millennials or Gen Z. These groups are viewed as more accepting of sexuality, race and gender in addition to prioritising mental health which can be seen through art across the decades as it can be argued each younger generation is more open and progressive. Keith Haring uses art to speak on the aids crisis as Safe Sex! (1987) was made in 1987 referencing the epidemic lasting from 1981 to the early 90’s. The emphasis put on safe sex to stop the spread of HIV was largely affecting the community of gay men killing around 40 million people from then to 2023, it almost wiped out the entirety of gen x. The epidemic not only almost killed an entire generation, but caused worldwide outspreads of homophobia, as people labelled it the ‘gay plague’ or ‘cancer’ the gay community was ignored and blamed, Reagan’s government refusing to respond, and rumors AIDS is transferred through touch, many of the men died with no one to hold their hand.  As Keith Haring himself was queer this was a key motif throughout, creating hundreds of pieces to promote safe sex and AIDS education, with one of his most famous pieces igorance=fear (1989) Haring died of AIDS in 1990 at just 31,however he began a foundation to provide funding for AIDS organisations and uses his art as imagery.

Went to visit my grandparents and had a horrifying, bone-chilling moment where I was sitting in the living room with my baby boomer father and Vietnam vet grandfather, and Grandpa turns on Fox News to footage of pro-Palestinian marches. They both scoffed and Dad said, scornfully, "It's not genocide." And then called the protestors idiots. It was amazing (in an awful way) to hear such a thing.
The older generations have such contempt for us younger, more educated people and are so entangled in national pride, especially military families. They don't dare be introspective because they would just collapse in on themselves like a dying star if they saw that everything they had pride in was built on a lie.
As far as I'm concerned, pride is just as deadly as planet-killing greed because it leads people blindly down the road to committing atrocities in the name of their country.
And I can't say anything, because they would call me an idiot, too. It would be pointless. Despite the fact that I was getting into genocide studies in college after that Nazi march in Charlottesville. 🫠

Chapter Nine: The Who, My Generation (Decca, 1965) | Written by Pete Townshend
THIS IS A SONG THAT DOES NO FAVORS FOR anyone, and casts doubt on everything.
In this song, people are trying to slap you around, slap you in the face, vilify you. They're rude and slam you down, take cheap shots. They don't like you because you pull out all the stops and go for broke. You put your heart and soul into everything and shoot the works, because you got energy and strength and purpose. Because you're so inspired they put the whammy on, they're allergic to you, and they have hard feelings. Just your very presence repels them. They give you frosty looks and they've had enough of you, and there's a million others just like you, multiplying every day.
You're in an exclusive club, and you're advertising yourself. You're blabbing about your age group, of which you're a high-ranking member. You can't conceal your conceit, and you're snobbish and snooty about it. You're not trying to drop a big bombshell or cause a scandal, you're just waving a flag, and you don't want anyone to comprehend what you're saying or embrace it, or even try to take it all in. You're looking down your nose at society and you have no use for it. You're hoping to croak before senility sets in. You don't want to be ancient and decrepit, no thank you. I'll kick the bucket before that happens. You're looking at the world mortified by the hopelessness of it all.
In reality, you're an eighty-year-old man, being wheeled around in a home for the elderly, and the nurses are getting on your nerves. You say why don't you all just fade away. You're in your second childhood, can't get a word out without stumbling and dribbling. You haven't any aspirations to live in a fool's paradise, you're not looking forward to that, and you've got your fingers crossed that you don't. Knock on wood. You'll give up the ghost first.
You're talking about your generation, sermonizing, giving a discourse.
Straight talk, eyeball to eyeball.
TODAY IT IS COMMONPLACE to stream a movie directly to your phone. So, when you are watching Gloria Swanson as faded movie star Norma Desmond proclaim from the palm of your hand, "I am big, it's the pictures that got small," it contains layers of irony that writer/director Billy Wilder could never have imagined. Of course, someone streaming something to their phone is most likely watching something even shorter and faster paced on TikTok, certainly not anything in black and white with a running time of 110 minutes.
Every generation gets to pick and choose what they want from the generations that came before with the same arrogance and ego-driven self-importance that the previous generations had when they picked the bones of the ones before them. Pete Townshend was born in 1945, which puts him at the front end of the baby boomer generation, born right after the Second World War ended. The generation who fathered Pete and the rest of the boomers has been called the Greatest Generation -- not a self-congratulatory term at all.
It might be helpful to take a moment and define terms for just a bit. What exactly is a generation? Currently, the common definition is the period of time that the statistically largest portion of the population born within a thirty-year period is in control of the zeitgeist. Recently, we have entered a new phase, where anyone entering the age of twenty-two as of 2019 is now a member of Generation Z. While people make jokes about millennials, that group is now old news, as obsolete as all of the previous generations -- the baby boomers, Gen X, the Fragile Generation, the Intermediates, the Neutrals, the Dependable, the Unshaken and the Clean Slate.
Marlon Brando, Like Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and the first wave of rockers, fell somewhere between the greatest generation ever and the baby boomers; too young to fight against the Nazis, too old to go to Woodstock. Yet when Brando replied, "Whaddya got?" when a local girl asked him what he was rebelling against in the movie The Wild One, it set the stage for the sixties and the rebellion against the picture-perfect prefab communities the boys came home from the war to build.
Like a lot of boomers, Pete seems to have a chip on his shoulder in this song. But he's not totally confident, he's somewhat back on his heels. There's a certain defensiveness. He knows people put him down just because he gets around. Perhaps he feels like he will never measure up or he knows they resent his generation's newly abundant leisure time. He wishes they would just disappear, fade away. He hopes he dies before he gets old and is replaced like he is replacing them. Pete can't even point the finger himself, he depends on his mouthpiece Roger to hurt the invective. The fear is perhaps the most honest thing about the song. We all rail at the previous generation but somehow know it's only a matter of time until we will become them ourselves.
Pete would probably be the first to tell you. He has a front-row seat for the history of his generation. He could read the picket signs against hatred and war. Well, that certainly ended that, thank you for your service. Each generation seems to have the arrogance of ignorance, opting to throw out what has gone before instead of building on the past. And they have no use for someone like Pete offering the wisdom of his experience, telling them what he has learned on the similar paths he has trod. And if he'd had the audacity to do so, there's every chance that person would have looked up at Pete and told him that he couldn't see him, he couldn't hear him.
And that gave Pete another idea.

I need to warn you about a tumblr user whose url is "r4cs0" If you get a private message from this guy BLOCK IMMEDIATELY. You might just block him in advance to be safe.
Yeah, I know if you go to his blog right now, it doesn't look so bad. Some homophobia and other bigotry occasaionally slips into his posts, but mostly it just looks like some middle schooler who thinks using the R-slur is funny. But thats part of the play here, he wants you to think he is just a low-grade meme blog.
r4cs0 is a crypto-fascist. Almost all of his followers are far right-wing Trump supporters who spread COVID misinformation. And they try to keep it low-key on his blog posts so that people don't catch on. This is so he can send private messages to people and pretend to just be a generic internet funnyman who wants to be your friend. But once he sucks you in to his circle of "friends" then he can start grooming you to become a right-winger like him.
And he isn't a middle schooler. He is a fundementalist mormon baby boomer living in Idaho. He went to Brigham Young University back in the day with another tumblr user who is now ex-mormon called Lemuel Apologist. She has posted stories about how he used to gas light her into jump humping for him. And I guess she actually stopped being Mormon mostly because of him and his rants about Mormon Bigfoot.
His long term goal in contacting you is to eventually recruit you into his Mormon political activism and right-wing militia nutjob groups. At a very minimum, he will try to talk to you about how dangerous wolves are. And what he means by "wolves" seems to vary based on who he hates the most that day. Sometimes he is talking about older gay men with beards. But sometimes he is also talking about literal wolves. He campaigned to change the laws in Idaho to make it legal to hunt endangered wolves there and in 2021 he pulled it off. They can shoot wolves from helicopters now. But r4cs0 actually prefers to "hunt" the wolves a different way. He teaches them how to say gay slurs and sends them into gay bars. And he will do the same to you if he can!
anon this is a lot to say that the guy is queerphobic and posts nazi shit (which he does, pretty often, he's not "crypto" anything). Like wtf is that wolf stuff at the end. Also I already had him blocked.

At the risk of my sanity and stellar ✨️online reputation✨️, I'm gonna drop my most Boomer opinion, as a not-quite-elder Millenial.
Stop canceling people and stop censoring things.
I know we, as mere peons, have little vote in the censorship arena, but I mean generally, amongst your peers, amongst your fellow Internet denizens.
I grew up when the internet was brand spankin new, back before there were ads, fact checkers, regulations of any kind. I remember Chris Poole (teehee, amirite), I remember stumbling upon porn, decapitations, and slurs, ableism, and racism beyond your wildest dreams. I like to think I turned out okayish. But my point is this: your morals and values aren't shaped upon you by the outside world. Your parents and immediate community shape that, but the maintenance of that is all on you, whether you enforce that or not. For example, a YT™️, I do have a degree of instilled racism. But my family and community taught me black people are the same, good, cool, etc. All that exposure to the evilest of evils on the internet did not change that. My parents taught me something, I reinforced it independently, so nothing any jackhole had to say on the internet could change that.
While I do applaud this generation's willingness to discuss mental health and prioritize vulnerability, yall do seem to be really into "cancel culture" and don't say slurs, respect my pronouns, that was really hurtful, don't be such a whatever-ist.
Babes, little lambs, sweet summer children, hearken: let people say their shit. Let them be the loudest, most manipulative, racist, anti-semitic, sexist, etc motherfuckers. Why? Because that way, you can see their true colors at the outset. Instead of this situation where, say, some youtube celebrity seems so great but oh no he was texting minors all along who could have seen it coming, or this influencer on TikTok was a Nazi all along!
Would they have necessarily come out with that shit straight out the gate? No, but if someone is truly comfortable, they'll say it a lot sooner rather than later. The goal in your flock is to make the wolves as obvious to spot as possible. To me, in my singular, most humblest opinion, it feels like you're giving the wolves extra fleece and teaching them MUA tips on how to blend in. That's all.
Hearing or seeing bad things won't hurt you or change who you are fundamentally as a person, and I think that fear of being exposed to things is a bit snowflake-y. The opinions of others can't make you a racist, or give you an ED, or whatever; who you are are is on you, and if you think you might be that easily influenced, work on that. Integrity isn't exactly inherent, it's a skill. You're not a bad person for being easily influenced. No one online is going to tell you the 100% truth, it's opinion soup up in here, baby. You choose who you are, you cultivate your experience.
that all being said, I AM glad fucked up shit is harder to find because oof

when i type nazi today most of the time i am referring to nazi americans who love incest twin trophy wife blonde blue eye pale porn stars...not referring to conservative nazis with more morals although both are mass murderers. americana loves sex and action movies and dumb blondes getting murdered in horror movies ...
thank you, conservative global randoms, isis, amish, minninite, pentecostal, etc babushkas... i love u sorry im insane lol i know we don't really belong together bc i cannot belong with all of u but i am a crazy nakey anemic overheated dying lady...1940s American Dream, Nurse Pearl Harbor due to misogynistic males that wouldn't allow female doctors and surgeons. still, baby boomer american. please excuse the baby doomers ... cocaine was legal and mass produced in the 70s 80s when metal and horror became popular after peace and hippie love ppl orgies too but whatever sins are syns liars and liahs and litahs and etc
hope u change but don't be slave supernatural evil is in charge and loves slavery of course
~ born in the wrong era, American Girl
yet still some modern baby and child murderers are not Baby Doomers generation...today they have the choice, when they do, to have recreational sex every day and night with strangers and they continue to have abortions...very disgusting modern America but thats the 25-35yo ages relatively approximately but no one knows why all the death row serial killers are killers and not murderers. they're innocent. sorry to tell u supernatural is real, so are evil females with ego problems worse than men, and they have supernatural abilities to possess and control like puppets.
example: Satan is female Devil is female Lillith is Eve evil stems from females
why to me when i had 4.0 and love americans and love family
I'm not a misogynistic female...but it appears so
also monoamorous celibate until marriage to death so
sorry to inform u that women are evil and pimp women and children out and sell chilsren for drugs and orgies and worship etc u already kno fbi cia
but america isn't racist and prejudiced...we coexist under state and federal laws.
evilists exist. maybe satan and god are real, but evil is real. i am atheist and agnostic due to supernatural and mentally ill
