summary ⇾ in which you can’t seem to sleep and they... details ⇾ 885 words / neteyam sully x na’vi!reader + lo’ak sully x na’vi!reader (both separate) / 🌸 fluff / established relationship / gn!reader / the sully’s and the reader are in the omatikaya clan (at the hometree) notes ⇾ i wanted to do something a lil’ different of writing reactions for just neteyam and lo’ak! like mini-fics of the same situation for our fave sully boys ✨ more to come in this format! 

on most nights, it was fairly easy to fall asleep; to succumb to slumber after a long day but tonight didn’t feel like most nights. instead of feeling like sleep would soon consume you, your eyes were as wide as an owl's as you stared at the pattern of leaves above you with the light glow sprinkled about in the night.

[🦋] neteyam with a soft sigh, you carefully turn to your side, lightly jumping in surprise to see that neteyam was already staring at you with a small smile on his face.

though surprised, it... truly was a nice surprise to know that you weren’t awake alone. it seems like it’s been brewing in his mind, the question he wants to ask, and it shows even in the way he looks at you.

the answer, comes out in a question: “can’t sleep?”

you shake your head with a sigh, shifting closer towards his welcoming arms that curl around you tighter. it’s secure, it’s comfort; it was home. you find your face slotted along the expanse of his neck, your hands meekly slinging around his waist as he leans his head against yours gently.

“don’t know what’s wrong with me,” you murmur, “i usually sleep well with you...”

“wanna go for a walk?”

you lean back just enough to look up at him, meeting with his coy smile that already has the answer.

“that’ll be great.”

the night didn’t go the way you had expected but it felt right nonetheless. neteyam easily lured you down from the trees, an occasional creak here and there but for the most part, silently treading away from the hometree. as you leisurely walk with neteyam, stories spill out of nostalgia and the serene that the peace of the night offers. he feels at ease, his heart swelling as he watches and listens to you speak of happy memories with your hand in his. though neteyam may or may not have fallen asleep, this was much better than sleep, anyway.

tl;dr: this lovely boy would try to help you by going for a walk, or other ways to take your mind off things so it gets you to sleep. it feels like he’s a sensitive bean, and too considerate for his own good, so he’ll try to make sure you sleep first before him (if he can, if not, he’s told you to wake him up if you can’t fall asleep). expect long walks, climbing trees, going to a river, maybe even him stroking your head to lull you to sleep. (not neteyam finding other ways to hold you despite already quite literally cuddling you to sleep)

[🦋] lo’ak your eyes open for the umpteenth time, a soft huff leaving your lips as you do. that grants you the slightest shift of lo’ak’s arms around you as he groans into your neck, making you turn into a statue at the fear of waking him up but it seems–”y’know, if you couldn’t sleep, you could’ve said something.”

you remain unmoving until you see lo’ak peels his eyes open and the way he’s smiling has you lightly hitting his arms holding you captive. when the hilarity subsides, you’re conscious that lo’ak is awake with you; his eyes are merely observing your features, resting on your lips as you say: “sorry, i didn’t mean to wake you.”

“wasn’t exactly asleep,” he chuckles, moving away so he’s able to face you properly, “do you wanna... just talk?”

that gets you to turn your body so you’re facing him with a raised brow, “you wanna talk to me until we fall asleep?”

“do you actually wanna move?” he scoffs.

he sees the answer in your eyes and the way you press your lips together, making no moves to... move.

“what do we talk about?” you ask, softly, as if you’re shy and lo’ak finds this all the more amusing. instead of teasing you, he decides he might as well take this opportunity to talk to you; as cheesy as it sounds, he appreciates being able to at any time of the day. even if it’s when he’s supposed to be sleeping.

“hm... how was training today?”

it was such a simple (and initially silly-sounding) question but it’s one that usually gets the ball rolling. from a question that’s asked on the daily, it easily threads to something else, jumping from point a, to b, to c, to the rest of the alphabets that lo’ak can’t ever keep count (but he doesn’t need to).

what lo’ak does know is that it’s seemingly helping you ease the weight in your heart restricting you to sleep. funnily enough, it helps him rest easy that night as well as he curls you into his embrace and feels like he can breathe right when he watches you drift off to sleep.

lo’ak slept with a smile on his face that night (as he does with many, many nights of having you in his arms).

tl;dr: cheeky little thing would just wanna talk to you as a way to get you to be tired. he loves hearing the sound of your voice; it calms him as much as his voice calms you. he’ll ask questions to hear stories, to hear your opinions (maybe even a debate here and there) but for the most part, light-hearted conversations and occasional sentimental mentions; pouring your heart out to one another.

📥 What is your fave fic to receive comments/messages on?

Is it cheating to say any of them? Because I love seeing what people have to say on what I write and put out there! Among my ffxiv stuff I always love seeing comments on things that involve Stasia and Carly (which is mostly wips i know) as they are the ones that stray from the general story and aren't always likable so I like being able to see how they come across and make sure that its the way I intend to and think I'm doing when writing. A more specific piece it would have to be this piece with Anthea and the final days. I feel its one of my best works posted in completion and I like seeing how an event like that comes across to others especially given that much of that time period is up to interpretation of an individual.

👖 Are you a planner, plantser, or pantser? Is it consistent?

No planning we die like men! jk jk I am more of a plantser in that I go into a wip with a general idea in my head on what I want the main focus of a piece to be, the intention of it, and any specific lines or actions that inspired it. After that I just write it out and see what happens! A lot of times I get to where I was planning and in ways I didn't expect, other times I end up somewhere different but it felt so natural writing it that I had to leave it. There are the rare occasions I don't do any planning and just get the urge to write and so I do just that and will come back to it if I get stuck, this happened recently with a piece where I had very little in mind other than knowing Phobos is reading various letters Deimos got, but who they were from and what they said and going back home were all things that I came up with on the spot.

One thing I really let free and hardly put any thought into ahead of time is the formatting of my writing though. I like to at times be a bit of a visual writer in that I will use breaks, bolds, italics, lack of spaces, etc. to convey something that I probably would take too long to write out in any other fashion. Besides how else can I best describe racing thoughts and anxiety than putting a bunch of words together without any space between them haha.

Also will mention that much of my stuff looks like panster writing because I was writing it as I was actively playing the story so I had no idea how it was all going to end and what I wanted to do with my kids as Sib and Demos started in two different universes.

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

This would depend more on what you would call a wip. I tend to count anything that's at least a few paragraphs or dialogue long, which there's quite a bit of that. If we're talking just straight ideas then there's plenty of moments that I would love to write but I don't have a way to write them quite yet. Things like the last conversation Carly and Zenos have, the conversation Demos has with his mentor after the Vault, lighter moments like Sib trying to tackle Emet in ShB or the montages of the gang waking up at first light to get moving with a frantic Sib trying to catch up anime style getting ready. Hell the time that Deimos believed he could randomly tame a unicorn resulting in him, Emet, and Hyth being chased by a herd of them. Or the start of Etheirys' Worst Girls Trip with Sib and Stasia landing on their guide. I just have a lot of little things or big moments that I'd love to write because I can see them in my brain and how they play out but it can be so hard to translate that. I feel this is also why gposing has become a way for me to tackle these ideas as I plan as if I'm watching a show or movie so I can better get the angles and descriptions without having to actually describe anything haha.

Thanks for your album comparison! What about covers and promotional pictures in general (for both singles and albums)? Which one do you like the most? Is there a style they chose that you find the prettiest? You can rate your favourite pictures looking at the girls' solo careers individually but it would also be interesting to compare them!

Sorry it’s taking me so long to get back to you, I always have a bunch of asks in my drafts and I try my best to work through them in more or less chronological order 🙈

First of all, for me personally Wakana is the clear winner when it comes to visuals. Her photo shoots are ✨top-tier✨ with no exception [even if her outfits look atrocious at times XD] ! Say what you will about Space Craft but they definitely don’t shy away from investing a lot of money in high-quality promotional material and merchandise. We are constantly getting gorgeous pamphlets, special photo spreads for her fan club magazines and of course a variety of photo booklets/books for her music releases. Nothing of that sort exists for Keiko’s and Hikaru’s solo work. One might argue that it’s not necessary since the focus should be on the music rather than the artist’s visuals but meh, let’s be real here, in many cases it’s those specific “idol” marketing strategies that bring in the big money and not the music itself. On a side note, Wakana is just so freaking photogenic, especially when it comes to professional shoots like this. Despite Keiko’s otherworldly beauty, she somehow always manages to look kinda awkward in at least 80% of her staged photo shoots. There honestly haven’t been enough releases from Hikaru that contained a proper amount of visuals so it’s hard to even compare her to Wakana and Keiko.

Comment: Look at her!!! Just look at this goddess! Can you believe that this was part of the regular edition credits booklet?!! Now THAT’s how you make people buy useless regular editions! By adding the most beautiful pictures of your artist! I love every single shot. Her hair, her outfit! The locations! Perfection! I don’t even mind the random fabrics on the ground. I have absolutely no idea how you would adequately translate a theme like “magic moment” into visuals so I am not mad that they simply went for an urban but still open setting.

Keiko - dew [Limited Edition]

Comment: This is 100% my aesthetic, it’s unbelievably beautiful! Probably would have been my overall #1 if there had actually been more than just a few shots in the super pricey limited edition. They were really lazy with the booklets of the other editions and I’m still bitter about that. But other than that, no complaints from me. As far as I am concerned, these are perfect visuals! All the pink, the girly outfit, the messy bun, the misty glass. Stunning! And it reflects the image of the album title “dew” pretty well. Generally I am a big fan of most of Keiko’s promo and cover images (“Ray / 始まりは” & "桜をごらん / 笑ってやる” are probably my favourite single covers) but it’s a shame we are only ever getting one or two shots and not an entire photo series. Call me shallow but I want more of those pictures, preferably in physical format!

Hikaru

Hikaru - disclose [Tokuten Postcard]

Comment: I really struggle to pick something for Hikaru. Don’t get me wrong, she always looks flawless in her cover shoots but for the most part, there is just not a lot to choose from and I might actually prefer how she looks in her tokuten postcards because those visuals are typically a little more daring. Unfortunately I don’t own all of them so I just went with the one above. Overall, I enjoy her “disclose” visuals most, maybe because they are very reminiscent of Kalafina?  Who knows? Either way, her dress is gorgeous and the cover design is suitably dark.

6 WTF Moments in Anime That Got Me Like 👇🏾

Spooky bitches, rise up. 👻 This month, I'm departing from the usual format to serve up blood and that which is unsettling. If you're looking for something gory and depraved, look no further. Expect a grab bag of the supernatural and/or explorations into the innate wickedness of man. In addition to including slightly longer recommendations than my normal lists, below specifically focuses on titles with a scene(s) that elicits genuine shock for the viewer regardless of whether the overall series was good or not.

Tokyo Ghoul (series)

Filed under: “That first episode tho 👀”

Humans won't always be at the top of the food chain and Tokyo Ghoul takes naive Ken Kaneki and exposes him to the dog-eat-dog world that writhes just below the surface of his everyday life.

The WTF moment? Let's just say, I hope you don't have a fear of bugs.

Another (series)

Suppose, at the edge of reason, you suspected that you or your loved ones were damned to die gruesomely because there was someone in your presence who simply refused to move on? When in the proximity of certain death, how far would you go to balance the scales to maintain your hold on life as you know it? Class 9-3 clings desperately to the hope that they'll survive the school year and stave off the Calamity but it doesn't take long for despair to bleed into mass hysteria.

The WTF moment? As tension mounts, all hell literally breaks loose in a crescendo of gore. This show makes the list for that WTF but also because I genuinely recommend it for anyone into horror thrillers. The rise in tension is very reminiscent of that of Battle Royale (another fave).

Akame Ga Kill (series)

Filed under: “I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me.” “Don’t get too attached” and “That first episode tho 👀” and also included on this list.

Perhaps the best instances of horror are those that peel back the veneer of seemingly decent people and reveal how positively insidious they are. Monster themed scary movies never really compelled me as much as supernatural or plain and simple human antagonists because the latter always felt more possible than a werewolf or vampire.

The WTF moment? Akame Ga Kill accomplishes the above, if I recall, in the very first episode.

Attack on Titan (series + ovas)

Filed under: “I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me.” “Don’t get too attached” and “That first episode tho 👀”

This is the main departure included on this list despite its long run, also, it's so popular, why include it? BECAUSE, the exposition of this story creates so many WTF moments. One, big human-like monsters eating life-size humans (who can sometimes be monsters).

The WTF moment? How to narrow down? The first episode, the introduction of Zachary's chair (the purpose for its inclusion was never satisfactorily explained except to highlight how twisted people can be), half of season 3 and half of season 4 like - just when you think you have the world figured out, there's another curveball. While most on this list are included for a singular moment within the series that grabbed and held my attention, AOT is a good watch for anyone interested in action, gore, or drama.

I realize this is from the movie and not the series which is what my blurb below is about so I'm kind of cheating but... *gestures vaguely* aesthetic.✨

Ninja Scroll (series + movie)

In the Ninja Scroll series, Jubei went through it and mans really couldn't catch a break despite his ultimate goal really just being to take a nap. He remains unreasonably calm (and punny) despite his lack of rest and in the face of constant supernatural adversity. The design and body horror illustrated by the opponents he comes across are definitely a part of what makes this series so over the top as is the violence against a certain character which I found unnecessary and drives us to our WTF.

The WTF moment? Episode 7, that's a particularly unsettling way to pass a stone IMO.

Elfen Lied (series)

Filed under: “I love the kind of woman that will actually just kill me.”

Elfen Lied is definitely one of those series that shocked people at the time for its gratuitous blood and violence if only for the sake of gratuitous blood and violence. When you consider the premise of the plot, I suppose it's not without purpose per se but, I think there were a few things that were just included for the shock value.

The WTF moment? Amidst sprays of bloods and exploding bodies, the biggest WTF is actually not even shown and will linger with you regardless.

COMFORTING THE BOYS AT NIGHT! ft. yuno, fuegoleon, william, julius, nozel

✰ YUNO it's loneliness that keeps him up, most of the time. yuno's never liked nighttime much, something about how still the world gets is strikingly unsettling for him — as if the planet itself hung on the verge of death. and for someone like him, raised among lively children and an ever screaming brother rival, this silence has always been disturbing.

he doesn't mean to wake you, he honestly doesn't, it's just that he has trouble staying still and you're always so closely snuggled up into him — and oh, suddenly he can smell that shampoo of yours he's always liked, and now your nose is crinkling up cutely as he tries to move. you end up waking up not from his constant shifting, but the missing warmth beside you when yuno moves to the seat on his balcony.

he doesn't look up when you head over and call out his name, though a small smile makes its way to his face — your arms slide over his shoulders, fingers interwining at his chest. "love you, (y/n)," he says, leaning back into you as his eyes flutter shut, the eager touch to his tone telling you he's waiting for your response.

you nod, nuzzling into his sleep–tousled hair before letting out a small, "mhm."

he frowns, an offended groan leaving him, "(y/n). say it back."

you consider the thought momentarily. "it back."

he turns to you, brows furrowed in a frown. "say i– why won't you–??"

with a pout of your own you lean in to kiss the spot between his eyebrows, effectively calming his frown. "i love you, too," your voice is barely audible, though that's alright because the words are only for him to hear — yuno visibly relaxes before chuckling, a gust of wind gathering around his wrist that then surrounds you, plucking your figure off the ground and raising you to lay beside him on the couch, your head nestled comfortably in his lap. you smile sleepily when his fingers busy themselves in your hair, and yuno mirrors the expression, wondering once more how just your presence managed to soothe his restlessness so easily.

✰ FUEGOLEON fue's mind tends to keep him awake more often than he'd like to admit, generally due to an overwhelming storm of thoughts that plague him incessantly. he's usually seated at one of the seats by his window, a drink long forgotten on the coffee table beside him — legs spread wide, a hand placed over his chest  languidly and the other pressed against his temple, eyes shut as he basks in the moonlight.

his lips twitch when you approach him and he leans forward, letting his hands rest atop his thighs as he tilts his head questioningly. mind riddled with the sleep, you move towards him with grabby hands, smiling sleepily when he grabs hold of your wrists softly to guide you into his lap.

you raise an eyebrow when he asks why you aren't asleep, draping your arms over his shoulders instead of answering. "a lot's going on in that pretty head of yours, hm?" he chuckles at that, lips pressed to your collarbone before he hums softly. your brows furrow when you make your offer, "it's either tea or tranquilizer darts, love." fuegoleon lets his head fall to your shoulder, his chest vibrating from the laugh that follows. you try once more, "no? maybe captain dorothy–" 

he presses a finger to your lips and suggests, "how about cuddles?"

his words hang in the air until the glint return to your eyes and you grin, "cuddles it is."

✰ WILLIAM it isn't anything new for william to have nightmares disturb his sleep, though most of them have never stretched out this late into the night — it's almost 2am when thirst woke you, and you've only just returned back to your room when you meet william's gaze, panicked and wild, as he tries working through his erratic breathing, now sitting upright.

haphazardly placing the glass of water at your bedside, you kneel on the bed, hands raised to hold his face, "will, sweetheart?" his eyes are fixated on his shaky hands even as you continue, "come on, come back to me, will, love,"

his gaze rises up to meet yours then, fingers gripping the sheets tighter, "am i–?"

you nod reassuringly, "you're okay, love, we're okay, i promise." his breathing only calms when you press your lips to his temple, and william's fingers leave the sheets to grab onto your shirt instead. you let him wrap his arms around you tightly, a relieved smile on your lips as his breathing evens out somewhat.

"would you like some water, sweetheart?"

he lets a few beats of silence pass before nodding, "yes, but– could you– ah, no, could we– ?" his grip on you tightens further and you run a soothing hand down his back, humming lightly.

"of course we can stay like this, and for as long as you'd like. that sound good? i can read you something, too."

his breath hitches against you, and you feel a dampness on your shoulder — william nods softly, his eyes closing as your hand travels up to the nape of his neck. "thank you, love. thank you."

✰ JULIUS he glances up the moment you shuffle in bed, your figure in his lap shifting in your sleep. julius' glare at his papers softens immediately as you sleepily nestle closer into him, your hand moving to find his own and resting over it. heat rushes to his face and he instinctively interwines his fingers with yours, heart thundering at your sleepy antics, before raising your hands and pressing a gentle kiss to your knuckles.

you stir once more, your eyes fluttering open to see him smiling down at you. "still not asleep, jules?"

he flushes. "sorry, darling, some work to catch up on tonight."

you push down your slight disappointment at his words. "dont be sorry, 's alright." he bites back a grin when you raise a hand to fluff up his hair, huffing in faux anger. "i'll have to speak to marx tomorrow, it looks like — working my pretty boy to the bone like this, who does he think he is?"

julius deadpans at you, eyebrow raised. "says the one who accepts his bribes and tricks me into returning to the palace every time?"

you roll your eyes, a fond smile stretching across your lips as you reach over for a glass of water. "and what of it? you get tricked every time despite knowing what i'm trying to do."

he frowns, pushing the last of the papers to his bedside table. "you know 's not fair, you bribe me with kisses each time."

gasping dramatically, you fall backwards on the bed, smirking when he catches you. "the wizard king takes bribes?!"

julius nods proudly. "gives bribes, too. like he's about to do right now." his eyes narrow as he lifts you back to your original position laying on his lap. you raise a suspicious eyebrow when he leans in to whisper beside your ear, "will you let me cuddle you to sleep if i give you lots of kisses?"

"yessir."

✰ NOZEL there's something in the night wind that nozel enjoys greatly, something he can't quite place himself if asked — all he knows is it always seems to gift him some peace of mind. which is why you take caution in being as quiet as you can entering — nozel foregoing sleep to sit by himself requires a great deal of stress to have piled up.

"zel, love?" your voice is soft so as to not startle him as you announce your presence.

no response. he flinches, feeling your hand rest on his shoulder, apparently not having heard you at all. you watch his mouth part as he tries to greet you, perhaps answer the question he can see clear as day in your expression. the words seem to be caught in his throat though, leaving the silence between you to stretch indefinitely.

you shake your head, your hand on his shoulder squeezing it, "you don't have to say anything, love. it's alright to just– feel bad sometimes."

he stares at his hands quietly, eyebrows pinched together.

"want me to help you prepare you for bed, zel?"

once again, the quiet stretches until he speaks up, "i'd like that."

with his words you seat yourself on the table in front of him, and with a slight flush, nozel leans forward. your hands busy themselves combing through his hair before you unclasp his house's crest from his braid, gently letting the hair loosen into its natural, wavy state. his eyes widen as he feels your palm brush against his cheek tenderly, watching as you push his bangs back and your lips rest against his forehead before stretching into a soft smile. nozel finds his expression soon mirroring yours, eyes slightly glassy when you pull away.

the sparkle in your eyes he's learnt to be vary of returns. "so can you undress yourself, or would you like help, captain?"

a laugh escapes you as you watch the tips of his ears redden impossibly, and he buries his face in your neck, an embarrassed smile against your neck. "sh– shutup."

what are some of ur favorite kpop choreos (if u havent already talked about them)

ah anon, i said i would write a fave choreo post back in like.......april, but i've been distracted by other asks and the existential dread of being a person. but to be fair, i have had a list sitting in my drafts since then, so i just gotta brush the dust off! i'm not going to include anything from this year (2021) because i'm planning a couple of year end roundup posts (fave stylings, fave choreo, maybe some others if peeple have suggestions), but here is a selected list of some of my favourite kpop choreos, in approximate order from excellent to personal-all-time-fave-make-me-insane.

i'm in trouble - nu’est

honestly there’s nothing really that special about this choreography, i just find it very satisfying to watch because it really emphasizes the electric bass rhythm, especially with all the percussive moves against their bodies. the formation changes in the first verse and the first chorus are my favourite.

4walls - f(x)

4walls you were so ahead of your time. it's hard to find a stable front facing version of this that shows the dance break well but there is a fancam here that's maybe the best? there's another one here that gives you a better idea of how they use their arms to shape the negative space and it's just so satisfying to watch.

this love - shinhwa

the choreo that kickstarted voguing in kpop, a true icon. shinhwa i need you to come back the boys just aren't doing it like this anymore.

the og, the reason why we have dance practice videos, the queen herself. i have to pay respects and also i do actually love this choreo. here's a stage not filmed on a potato so you don't hypnotize yourself watching taemin's shirt.

my valentine - vixx

the second best chair choreo and the best sexy chair choreo in kpop no i am not taking criticism. this is my favourite vixx choreo because it really takes advantage of their average height of 6'0 and their subsequently very long limbs. i love the levels and especially having jaehwan just pop in and out of frame like that. there's no dance practice for this, but there is a mislabeled fancam here where you can see it stable. also i love this one stage because none of the members stand up in the order the fanchant is in and it's very funny.

cherry bomb - nct 127

nct choreos are so weird and i love them, but it's the splits walking for me. amazing job saving the power move for right at the end. also the ways in which everything is offset and how they do canons is so fascinating to watch.

flower shower - hyuna

ranking dancers for that question a very long time ago made me rediscover this and i'm glad i did because my memory really is full of holes and i had totally forgotten what the choreography looked like. i love how the movements shift from loose and careless to structured and the choreo really uses the space and the number of dancers to maximum efficacy. my favourite bit is the 'flower field' where you don't realize they're arranged in a spiral until they start collapsing; it's not a very big detail but its very pleasing to the eye.

criminal - taemin

obviously i love taemin's choreos but criminal really does amazingly on treading that line of slickly unhinged and out of control; both out of your own self control and under the control of someone else. there's such fine attention to detail (typical of all taemin's work), but my favourite in this is how all the wrist movements untwist the binding so that it can thrown off seamlessly, without any need for a quick release. this is unquestionably one of taemin's best works, the synergy between the song and the styling and the choreo and the mv is so perfect, i really have no complaints. ok i have two complaints and they are 1) needed more chainsaw and 2) it is a CRIME how short his promotional period was we DESERVED to have that gucci suit on a music show.

i want you - shinee

the story of light is such a phenomenal piece of art that i am so glad exists, despite also simultaneously wishing that it never existed at all. one day i might write something about the use of nostalgia and different eras of retro aesthetics in the i want you/good evening/countless mvs but that's getting ahead of myself. i love the choreographies from this comeback (spoiler alert, good evening is also on this list), because their intention is so inwardly focused. these choreos are voyeuristic in a way that no kpop choreo has been or will ever be again, because yes they're letting us see, but it's not for us in the same way that every other kpop choreo is. koharu did a such a beautiful job with these two choreos, because while good evening maximizes on closeness, i want you maximizes on distance. there's no way to get the full impact of this choreo in music show camera language; the members are spaced too far apart and the stage is too empty to get any kind of density of frame. but that's what i love about how they filmed this dance practice, because 20ft away is the distance from which this is the most impactful. here's a stage so you can compare the difference in feeling. if i were to describe this choreo in one word it would be 'afterimage,' because that's what many of these formations are: afterimages, smear frames, the spaces between movements manifested. it doesn't matter about establishing the members and their faces because it isn't about them as individuals, it's about them as a whole; limbs of the same body moving through space in a way that we are only allowed to see from afar, never to truly know.

the 7th sense - nct u

i still cannot believe that this was the nct debut. obviously sm is still/has always been on some crazy kind of crack with nct releases but WOW when the risks pay off they pay off. i love how inexplicable the energy and intention of this choreo is, it's so difficult and incomprehensible that no one other than nct is ever going to be able to pull it off. this is full of such strange shapes and movements and i think it's under appreciated.

sunset - knk

do not be fooled by how small heejun looks, he is 5'11. yes knk really is that big. i actually really love knk choreos they are so unexpected and kinda weird and they use a lot of interesting partner/group structures that you can obviously see here, but you can also see in ride. their choreographer plays really well to the strengths of the group, which are 1) that they take up a lot of space and 2) they don't mind getting all up in each other's business, so we get a lot of choreo that is technically challenging in its timing and trust, but doesn't depend solely on athleticism like a lot of other boy group choreos. like with flower shower and with criminal there is such obvious imagery of the song in the movements and as a visual person i like that creativity. their debut choreo is also really interesting and i'm so in love with this stage for rain, like!!! using lasers for raindrops!!!! sorry not sorry this turned into a knk appreciation zone but also stan knk.

want - taemin

i would have linked the dance practice but i despise how it was filmed because this choreo really is meant for a single stationary point perspective. more on that whenever i finally finish the writeup on this that's currently sitting in my drafts. i also adore how the backup dancers keep their hands in their pockets for the first minute. i also also love that stupid squid arms move it's so dumb and yet he makes it work. ok there's a lot of things i adore about this choreo, no one is surprised.

black rose - taemin

believe it or not i am actually limiting the amount of taemin choreography on this list, but black rose i think might actually be my favourite of his because its just so beautiful to watch and this particular stage is filmed SO well and combined with the projections and lighting i just!!! i have a lot of feelings about black rose, that's why it's up so high on this list. there's a stable fancam here where you can see the full effect of that glorious spinning thousand hand move. also i just realized this is the second choreo on this list that's flower themed, oops?

good evening - shinee

this choreo makes me insane. like the i want you choreo, at its core good evening is about distance between audience and performer, but this time in the execution it takes the opposition; emphasizing the distance with physical closeness. this dance practice is fine, especially if you want to get an understanding of the larger stage picture but where this choreo really thrives is in the music show stages. it is meant for close ups. there is a ton of member interaction and small movements designed to be caught in the hypercloseness of the camera, like the head move and foot taps at 0:40. the chairs themselves are specific, designed with a purpose to catch light and be a centrepoint, and there's a lot of speed variation in movements that doesn't necessarily read as well from a physical distance. but then how do they portray distance, you ask? because they don't look at the camera. shinee mentioned in an interview that they had to fight the broadcasting stations in order to not look at the cameras, because apparently it's a rule that idols have to look down the barrel of whatever camera is on them. but if you watch any of the good evening stages, they purposefully avoid the camera, not allowing you connection with them (there are a few times where they fuck up, but i can imagine it's hard to turn off the instinct that you've been honing for over a decade to look down every single lens that you spot. also they probably had to negotiate a bit with the stations. but also those few times where they do meet that gaze are so piercing because of that denial). long story long this choreography makes me insane and there will never be another one like it.

I have! I’ve been to Canada which is one of my fave places on Earth. It is BEAUTIFUL there. I went when I was back in undergrad for a Geology trip during my mineralogy class. I love minerals! They’re so interesting and Canada has some amazing formations of natural minerals in Ontario.
